The way I came to listen to Leonard Cohen is a bit of serendipity. I was in the library looking for a book, I think it was Eckhart Tolle's book The Power of Now -- haha! And in the book was a check out list from someone who had checked the book out before. On the list was another book and a CD of Leonard Cohen. I listened to Diamonds in the Mine and went -- Wow!

It's a song about depression and disappointment I believe. As for the particular references in it, I don't know what he's referring to. Leonard Cohen was depressed for most of his life.

Music doesn't have to be traditional in order to be great. I think that this song is very natural and genuine which makes it great for me. I mean the album's name explains all of the songs, "Songs of love and hate". In the end, music is subjective just like any other art form.
