I watched part 2 as an assignment in my sociology class but now I'm done with that class and I love gottman's theory even more. It's helpful and opens eyes from a third perspective to help myself and my relationships with others.

Coming from a broken home and a very stressful family dynamic, I am surprised that both my husband and I actively try to do all of the things he pointed out in the Masters, without realizing it. All of our married friends keep telling us that our love will die down and eventually we'll become like them, but 3 years later and we are even better at it now then we were at the beginning of our marriage. I am noticing a lot of his Disasters behaviors in our friends and I wish I could send them this without offending them.

I think with the issues you present, we have to consider the fact that we have to be able to look at things from the other persons perspective, and even if we can't fully see it and agree with it, we have to be able to accept their position on that and not be dismissive of it. If we can't deal with it, then it would seem that we would either have to change their perspective, be changed or end the relationship.
-I don't claim to be right or know much though, just a thought!

In the late 80s my wife and I watched a video series about couples understanding each other to strengthen their relationships, has anyone else watched it and do you recall who the couple was, one line from the video, A man speaks 1500 words a woman 3500,

I am a late comer.. :) I love these videos and the thing about people who stay together but are unhappy what does that look like wow. I needed to hear that. I see so many couples who do this :( But when they come to therapy how do we help them realize this is what they are doing and bring them back into the relationship together living together but being separate. So all this information is good, but how about a seminar/youtube video about techniques to help these couples make change. Just knowing their issues is not enough. WoW the Q&A was great!!!

these principles are illustrated in the Bible already for 2000 years already. It says that husbands should love their wives as Christ loved the church. Wives should respect their husbands. When a man finds a wife, they shall leave their families and cleave to one another, form a new family. All that this talk has done is to prove the validity of the concepts presented to us by apostle Paul 2000 years ago. I always find it appealing how the principles mentioned in the Bible still hold true today. God Bless You all!

Consider first, is it your place? Do the parents want you involved with their child? Perhaps, the best option is suggesting to the parents that their child talk to a therapist or that they talk to a therapist about how to talk to her.

Is discussing politics, ethics, religion, sports, etc a good idea? In fact, is discussing anything where one may be "victorious" by being right a good idea? Wouldn't this cause a sense of intellectual superiority that would harm the relationship?

    • @branver1172

Things can be discussed in non-competitive ways. That would be an odd marriage to never discuss anything important.

I assumed he was referring to the constant rumors that have been going on about him and Robin, not that this is his second marriage and they have been married now for a long time.
