OK so I own both size tanks (125 & 150), you make some really good points about both tanks in my opinion (along with wife and 2 kids) Say we all prefer the 150 looks (31 inch tall glass and 24 inch width) although it is a little harder to maintain! IT'S WORTH IT!
I've got a 4x4 250 gallon now , had 125 72.in. X 18 in. and a 265 7ft x 2ft ..Personally I prefer the 4x4 ...My fish seem to swim more in a gentle circular motion rather than pacing up and down a hallway .
I purchased a 6 foot 150 gallon tank a couple months ago. About one more week and it will be cycled. Took quite awhile but it is worth the wait. I am having adult discus shipped to me. The ones I picked out have bright colors and will stand out nicely against the black background.🐠
I'm partial to the 150 a little bit more that the 125. Angelfish would thrive in either tank, but the 150 would probably allow them to grow larger due to it's 30" height. Since I have a love for taller/larger sized angels, that 150 has been a dream of mine each and every time I waltz into my local Petsmart. I never get tired of looking at this video! Your tanks are amazing. I have the 150 g from petsmart and wish I had a 125g! Soon I’ll be getting one I hope. I want to put my Oscars in it! I just wish they had better options of tanks than the brands they carry because the reviews I read on them scare me! Until I watched your video I didn’t even think about the length of my 150! I was just excited I got it on sale! I think the 125 is better for the fish! Had I to do it all over again I would still have gotten the 150 but stocked it different! Learned a lot from this video! Thanks!
Awesome review, I just ordered the 150, the current one is laid out like the 125 you liked, just taller. New sump, overflow, pump, heater, our Oscar is getting a big upgrade. 🤙🏼
I really like 125 gallon tanks. This was the first large tank I bought. I recently bought a 220 gallon tank. It is super hard to reach the bottom! I definitely prefer the 6 foot long tanks! Great video!
Very true. We added an extra support beam in the basement under the middle of my 6ft 125 as well as a 4x4 across 5 joists. Not messing around with that weight 😂
Ive had the 150 tall, and long. While the 6ft lenght is nice, 18 inch width is big drawback IMO. It will start to look cramped real fast with 12+ inch fish. Never been a fan of shallow tanks like the 125, they just look to crowded. All things being equal, taller tanks give more swimming space so the fish aren't right on top of each other.
I agree with the 6 ft. Because fish need length and distance,I have a 60 and my fish mostly stay at the bottom I would definitely move those big fish to a 6,because none were swimming up they were swimming on top of each other to get out the way,no room for distance..😭
Great video.. very informative... Im 6'4" so im at an advantage than most... i love my 300g (8'x2'x30") 36" tall stand, 200g (7'x2'x2') 40" tall stand, 215g (6'x2'x 29") 36" tall stand, 150g (6'x18"x27") 40" tall stand, & 92g corner on a 39" tall stand... each stand i built for my height...
Great video and just what I was looking for. I currently have a 55 as my largest tank but it is getting a bit overgrown. I've been looking at these tanks online on petsmarts site and I think either would be nice to own but I've decided on the 125. The reason is I have the perfect wall for it and it wont protrude into the room as far since it is thinner then the 150. Using cuttings from the 55 and 29 it should take some time before I am out of room again. Damn the invention of co2 lol
Jesssus thks tank!! Wow oddball fish I NEVER thought you could?? Okk so loong story short YOU'VE inspired me to get a Geo tank ONLY? Now it'll come and I will wait.... For now John, I've got two Leopard Ctenopoma's/ Leopard Bush Fish ones in my 60 gallon others in my 40 I'm going to get them out and BOTH into the 60's and upgrade to that 150 for my Cichlid's etc.... What would be some suggestions for tank mates for the Leo's??? I know bottom feeders and EBA's ghost knife fish etc... But can they go with Geo's? What are some other suggestions from you? Hopefully you read this and can answer.... I'm a HUGE can of your channel yours and Cory's only.... You normally text back... Hopefully you can help!
Your videos are very informative! I'm currently planning out what to do with my 29 gal...but once I graduate up..I'm deff. Going with the 125 and throw at least 200 crummy nose in there..Haha if my wife let's me
My son and I started with a 29 gal but quickly realized it wasn’t big enough for us. Got rid of it after a few months and ended up with a 40 breeder. Just last week a coworker gave me a 125 and I’m working on getting it up and running.
I like the 150 gallon because it's 30" tall. I want to put the tank inside the wall. I'm going to trim the wall around the tank so you don't see the water line and both top and bottom black trims. I would need to cover 1" from the bottom and cover at least 4-5" inches at the top. Now i'm left with a 24"-25" tall viewing area.
I have that petsmart 150 gallon tank. Wish I had a 125. Looking for one! You can get a python with the longer tube that cleans the gravel. I think it’s 36 inches, the one I have. Then there’s no worries on cleaning the gravel. It saved my life!
Meeeee toooo! You could always get the 36 inch long attachment to the python suction gravel cleaner! That’s what I gave for my 150 g 4 ft! It was a life saver!
@@ryanohara6550 - haven't settled on a size yet. I am leaning towards the 125 because of the length and I and breeding smaller fish for the tank. The wife wants me to get the 150 because it is not as long and takes up less room in the livingroom. I am sure either will look amazing. I have had a 265 at one time and everyone that saw it didn't want to leave. Lol
@@jlathem56 just picked up a 150 aqueon decided I wanted the extra width of it so if I get a larger fish or if my Oscar gets really big it'll have more room to turn around. Plus nowhere around me has the 125 in stock as a kit with stand, canapy and light
Jason can I ask you how many heaters do you have in your 150 I bought a fluval E300 for mine.. will that be sufficient.. and if I place it in the center of the tank.
I have one heater in there because the tank is close to the window, but I don't think it runs much given the room is 80-82. When I relied on heaters I would run one (300W) on each side.
I’m checking around now for a 72x18x30 150 gallon I have a 93 inch stand but it’s on 20 inches wide. So I am going to try to get the biggest I can for this stand lol
youve talked me out of a 150 and into a 125. i want to do a big planted tank with vals and swords and neon tetras and apisto mcmasteri and cherry shrimp. and it would be much easier to light the 125 and for all the apistos to have territories and for me to create enough hiding spaces for the cheries that they breed faster than they get eaten.
I've got an option of either (6ftx2x2) or a (5x2.5 x2) - ends up being pretty much the same volume and pretty much the same surface area - its going to be to upgrade my cichlids (oscar, jack dempsey, spotted silver dollars etc..) - you mention length over height but what about depth? The 5ft would fit my space better but I want whats best for the fish first and foremost - what do you reckon?
@PrimeTimeAquatics thanks I'll do the 6ft then, I've just watched all your tank size videos and I was leaning that way but nothing I can find directly had the same dilemma
Is your 150 the Marineland 150 Extra High? I have been looking at that tank for some time, and think I will pull the trigger. The extra height will be perfect for a group of wild Altum Angel biotope I plan on setting up.
I just got the 150gal 48x24x30. I traded off my salt water stuff I had left over for it that was sitting in my crawl space .I got a 48x18 metalhilade light that definitely lights up the whole tank. Got the light for 25$ at a yard sale with both transformers ,spent 55$ on a bulk set of 4 prong bulbs on Ebay and I'm all set for light. As I'm writing this you to about exactly my concern, getting water flow to the bottom of the tank but I'll figure it out. I plan on running two aquaclear 110s and a rena filstar xp4. If need be throw my fluval submersible filters near the bottom and also run a rena xp3 I got. I have wanted this tank for so long and I'm 6'2" and fortunately I have stretchy arms lol just gotta build me a QUALITY stand I'm all good. It was that or the 210. I cant do the 125 long, it looks ridiculous to me. This tank I can take a comfortable bath in and if I can fit, I know my fish will be happy. I appreciate you making the video. If you can do one about how you filter yours itd be awesome. I may make a 55gal DIY sump with a 55 I got for 20$ and if your running a sump I'd like to see how you keep your water so clean. Awesome tank and awesome video man👍👌
Right now all I have on the tank is one Marineland 350 and two sponge filters and it's working out just fine. At one point I had just two Marineland 350's without any noticeable issues. Have fun setting it up!
That kind of depends on the fish and the other inhabitants. I know it doesn't answer your question, but there are multiple factors that would influence my decision - temperament, other fish, activity level, breeding behavior, etc.
Prime Time Aquatics something unique like for example a catfish or any kind of medium sized monster fish that would be comfortable & appropriate in a 125 gallon tank
Regarding the tall tank. I just got a tank that is 34 inches tall. (7 feet long). Can you give me some suggestions on lights that would work for a tank that tall? I'm thinking of having (easy) plants. Should I maybe just stick with plants that don't have to be rooted in the substrate? Maybe stick to plants I can attach to rocks and wood so the light won't have to penetrate as deep to get to them? Thanks.
That is one deep tank! If I were trying to plant it I would have to go with either the fluval 3.0s or some Kessil lights (they cost a lot but are probably the best option for that type of tank).
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Okay. Thanks. What easy rooted plants might have a chance in something that deep? Should I stick to plants I can tie off on drift wood and rocks?
You could utilise the height of a 150 but getting fish that occupy all levels, like Corydoras and a pleco in the bottom, dwarf Rams for that low-mind range, Rummynose Tetra for mid-high, Hatchetfish for high
Can you tell me what type of fish is in the shot of the 6ft tank; the colorful fish sitting on the rock? (Not the peacock cichlids, but the other colorful fish)????
@@PrimeTimeAquatics I understand they are an african, but I'm planning a south american tank. I know jewel cichlids aren't from major lakes so their care is most likely south american"ish". I'm a saltwater enthusiast so I'm not as up-to-speed on FW. Planning a 6ft 135g with a 4ft 75g sump. Looking for cichlids that are more mild mannered so that I can add a variety of fish. I'd love to pick your brain - any way to DM you rather than open forum?
That could possibly work with the less aggressive SA cichlids. They might get a little beat up by the larger more aggressive SA/CA cichlids. I'm on both Instagram and Facebook!
I recently got a 48x30x30 tank with a center column overflow. It seems short for an oscar but I think the depth in both directions is going to work out just fine. It's 185 gallons as well lol.
I love the 150.... not just the height but the depth of the tank. Also it just looks fancy for some reason lol. I actually have almost the same fish you have in your 150 and was thinking about adding a frontosa. How well did yours do in there ?
@@PrimeTimeAquatics yes Its a great tank for the right fish. All yours look happy in there together. I have a few different sevurum's and Uaru's in mine. but i really love frontosa's and would like to add one.
Was looking at the 125 tank on petsmart site. Really good deal but alot of mixed reviews which kind of sketch me out. Issues with leaking and partical board cabinet. If I was to get it would you resilicone the whole tank?
Personally, I wouldn't reseal it. I have four 125s and they are all either marineland or aqueon I believe (chain store tanks) and I have had zero issues. In fact, all of my standard tanks (probably close to 55-60) are standard chain-store tanks and I have only had one leak (a 75 gallon), which they replaced without any issues. If I were worried about leaking, I would probably just order a tank from a place like Custom Aquariums where the quality is definitely going to be much better.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics right on thanks for replying. Currently have a 36 gallon and want to get a bigger tank. You gave me more confidence to jump into one of those big boys!
Awesome comparisons made Jason.. Btw.. can a bala shark be added to a 75 gallon planted aquarium? Reason for enquiring about is whether they are herbivores?
I'm not sure how hard it would be on plants. The only issue I see is bala sharks can get big - 12" or more, so a 75 gallon might get cramped for them when they get bigger.
I only have space for a 4 ft tank because my livingroom is a long rectangle with the floor joists going long ways. On one end there is a fireplace right in the other and on the other is the only real space to put a tv. So the 4 ft area next to the fire place (which we do not use) is the only place. Because of that I just buy 4 ft tanks. I have a 75 on one side and will be adding a 90 later this summer when I can take my yard sale tank outside and check it for leaks.
Great info, I have a 125 gallon, housing a 8" Jag 2 4"Dempseys 1 3" Convict 1 6" Redhead and 3 Pimelodus pictus- My question is would I be able house a Pike Cichlid if I happen to find one?
Hard to say for sure. They vary in size depending on the species. I'd be interested to see how the current inhabitants get along as they grow. For me personally, I would probably hold off because the Jacks can hit 10" and the convict will get big as well.
I want the 150 tall for a Frontosa tank. I actually built an area just for it when I completed my basement. I also have a 125 gallon built into the wall facing into the basement area for all to see. The 150 would be in my digital darkroom, an office space off the basement.
Trying to replicate your 150 us gallon size tank in the uk haveing trouble, iv seen a custom one online that is 48inch length. 30inch tall. 24inch wide. But it says it is 107uk gallons & 490 litres. (500) with a filter. But still way off from your 150 us gallon which has what 560 litres.?
@@PrimeTimeAquatics is your aquarium 48 length. 30 tall an 24 wide? Or is it 48 length. 24 high. 30 wide? If your measurements are the exact same as mine then somethings messing my head up !
Is the best of both worlds a 6' 150gal tank? On that note...any problems with the box store brands leaking with larger tanks. I'm worried to buy and then have leaking problems which I'm hearing is common.
Yes, the 6ft 150 is definitely the way to go! I haven't had any issues with the big box brands leaking with the exception of one 75 gallon, which they replaced without any issues. The rest have been fine and some have been running for a decade or more.
I am planning on moving my 20 guppies and 3 corydoras out of my 20 gallon tank in some months (once I find a cheapish tank), and I want to move them into a 125 gallon tank that I will of course add other fish to. Would 6 cory catfish, 20 guppies, 6 clown loaches, 15 neon tetras, 3 nerite snails be okay in a planted 125 gallon tank? Is that overcrowded?
Sounds like a nice set up! The clowns may periodically uproot plants just due to their rambunctious nature, but the stocking levels will probably work out ok. The only thing to watch are the clowns - at some point they may require a bigger tank if they grow to close to a foot long.
I agree with you. This tank became a "community tank" for fish that didn't have another place in the fish room. If you were to see more updated videos of this tank you will see that it is thinning out as fish die of old age. Ideally, I want this tank to house the severums, angelfish and the geophagus.
The longer the better if you can handle the extra cost and maintenance. I like 24 front to back so much more than 18. Also 24 high is so much better than 20 for viewing and I reach the bottom ok. The 180 is still my classic. Hardly anymore space or work than the 125 but so much nicer.
A little harder to clean and still oxygen levels might not be as easily distributed as a shorter tank. Plus your losing the extra bottom area with the four foot tank compared to the five footer for a 120.
I've never heard of a 150g 4ft before. The highest volume non custom 4ft we get in the uk is a 4x2x2, our 150g is usually a 5x2x2.(120uk gallons) I agree though 100% it's all about the foot print for big fish

Going with the 125 and throw at least 200 crummy nose in there..Haha if my wife let's me
That will be a nice set-up!
My son and I started with a 29 gal but quickly realized it wasn’t big enough for us. Got rid of it after a few months and ended up with a 40 breeder. Just last week a coworker gave me a 125 and I’m working on getting it up and running.
I started with a 29 worked my way up to a 90 now I really want to dabble in the 6ft tanks so I can get some bigger fish.
I have the same one! : -)
I prefer the 6ft 150 over both tanks. The 125 looks to squatty imo. The extra height makes the tank look more proportioned.
Ya, I agree, the only problem with the 6ft 150 is cleaning/maintaining the tank with the extra height, but I agree with you.
Meeeee toooo! You could always get the 36 inch long attachment to the python suction gravel cleaner! That’s what I gave for my 150 g 4 ft! It was a life saver!
Bran Sho that’s the one I have. The 6ft 150
Great insight, valuable information, agree 100%, thanks Jason!
Wrestling with this question myself. Thanks for your insight Jason.
In the end both are fun to have. haha
Prime Time Aquatics - So true!
What size tank did you end up getting? If you got one. And how do you like it? I'm trying to decide between the 2
@@ryanohara6550 - haven't settled on a size yet.
Those Oscar's are gorgeous
Thank you!
Beautiful tank and fish
youve talked me out of a 150 and into a 125. i want to do a big planted tank with vals and swords and neon tetras and apisto mcmasteri and cherry shrimp. and it would be much easier to light the 125 and for all the apistos to have territories and for me to create enough hiding spaces for the cheries that they breed faster than they get eaten.
I think the 125 will be a better option for your set up for sure. :-)
If I were choosing I'd go with the 6ft tank, but everyone has their own requirements and what works best for them!
Very true! Yes. It's built like a tank and we've had no issues. That's a great tank for what you are planning.
I have been thinking about both but I will probably go with the 125. The 150 has reviews were the bottom seals will blow
One at the shop by my house with blown bottom seal and glass chip
@@PrimeTimeAquatics thank you for getting back to me
What's the biggest fish I can put in a 125 gallon?
That kind of depends on the fish and the other inhabitants. I know it doesn't answer your question, but there are multiple factors that would influence my decision - temperament, other fish, activity level, breeding behavior, etc.
Prime Time Aquatics something unique like for example a catfish or any kind of medium sized monster fish that would be comfortable & appropriate in a 125 gallon tank
We bought a 72x18x29 best of both worlds.
I bet that's awesome!
That was a jewel cichlid. I had a really nice group that I wish I still had.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics what is the temperament of the jewel cichlid??
I would say they are somewhat aggressive. We actually did a species profile on them a long time ago. Usually don't mix well with Mbuna and peacocks.
How about a 129g.48 x 24 x26 tall
What kind of tilapia is that? I love the way it looks
That is Oreochromis niloticus.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics that's sweet, I hope you named him oreo
Why doesn't he put his tinfoil barbs and bala shark in his 125 to give them 2 more feet of swimming room?
It's something I have considered. I'm a little hesitant to do it because of their age and how stressed they get when they are moved though.
I recently got a 48x30x30 tank with a center column overflow. It seems short for an oscar but I think the depth in both directions is going to work out just fine. It's 185 gallons as well lol.
It'll work just fine!
That's a nice tank! more than enough for 1 Oscar.
I love the 150.... not just the height but the depth of the tank. Also it just looks fancy for some reason lol. I actually have almost the same fish you have in your 150 and was thinking about adding a frontosa. How well did yours do in there ?
I have no problems with it. The mix worked out well. Just wish I had a 6ft-8ft aquarium for the bala shark and tinfoil barbs.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics yes Its a great tank for the right fish. All yours look happy in there together. I have a few different sevurum's and Uaru's in mine. but i really love frontosa's and would like to add one.
150 g tall: benefit for 2 fish that like 2 swim up/down: angels & discus
If you were to pick between the 2 for an Oscar and featherfin catfish tank which one would be you choice? I plan to have 2 Oscar and 3 of the catfish
Depends on the size of the tank, but assuming the size is adequate I would go with Oscars. :-)
@@PrimeTimeAquatics got a 150 gunna do Oscars and featherfins hopefully they will do ok together
I’d have to go with the 125, because of the length, and 125 is already plenty.
drowning. There’s just something cool about a 6ft tank! 😀
Bro for 150gallan tank how many fishes we can add all chilites
It depends on the size of the fish and their activity level?
Can I use the MarineLand Magnum Polishing Internal Canister Filter
For a 150 gollan tank? & what's your thoughts on it
I'm using one right now on a 125 gallon - works well!
@@PrimeTimeAquatics OK thanks. I seen it says 97 gollan wasn't sure. Appreciate you getting back to me
What type of fish is that big black/blue/green fish? Beautiful fish
That is Geophagus altifrons!
Sounds cool! I agree, 4ft tanks are great for fitting tank into smaller spaces.
Whats the name of the fish looking like the balla shark but with orange fins ?
That’s a tinfoil Barb
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Thank You , I was looking for a fish like this for my aquarium to put with my balla sharks
I love it - do both! : -)
I'm not sure why they would call that a 107 gallon with those dimensions because the 48x24x30 we have is roughly 150 gallons.
Nice tanks, love those Oscars.
Thank you!
I want that width not that height though...
Need the width for hardscape/rocks for the shrimp...
That's what makes the 180 gallon so great - 72 x 24 x 25.375. :-)
Thanks for sharing this info. Things to really take into consideration.
Thanks for watching!
Where u purchase this 150g tank?
Petsmart usually has them
In the market for a 125 myself. Going to be my first tank over 20 gallons, lol.
Jordan Yang that’ll be awesome! Congrats
Can you mix Oscars and African Cichlids?
I have in my 125 gallon. Depends on the cichlids and the size of the tank.
What species of geophagus do u have in the 150 and also 125. There very nice.
The 150 is surinamensis and the 125 is steindachneri. Thanks for watching!
i have 4/2/2 tank size 120 gallon can i keep 4 oscar 1 parrot 1 redtail catfish keep in this tank i want keep permanent
I think a couple Oscars might work. The Red Tail Cat probably needs a 500 gallon tank minimum.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics alright, thank you! This helps a lot
Good looking fake plants, or well behaving severums?
Stefan Terpstra I wish the severums were that well-behaved. Fake plants in that tank! 😀
Would I be able to keep a marble gar in the 6ft
Probably, but if it were me I would prefer a 6ft x 2ft 180 gallon to give them enough space to turn around comfortably.
I thought the 150 gal (681.91 l) looked a bit overcrowded.
I agree with you. This tank became a "community tank" for fish that didn't have another place in the fish room. If you were to see more updated videos of this tank you will see that it is thinning out as fish die of old age. Ideally, I want this tank to house the severums, angelfish and the geophagus.
What's the substrate in your 125 gallon
I have mostly Caribsea in those tanks!
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Thanks for info
I'm to short for 90 gallon. Plus I like the bigger surface area for oxygen Exchange
My arms aren't long enough! : -)
Prime Time Aquatics I'm 5-7 so I GET IT. Wet armpits is not cool
Hahaha. Exactly!
Great video and nice fish
Thank you!
The longer the better if you can handle the extra cost and maintenance. I like 24 front to back so much more than 18. Also 24 high is so much better than 20 for viewing and I reach the bottom ok.
The 180 is still my classic. Hardly anymore space or work than the 125 but so much nicer.
If I could fit 180s in the basement easily I would double stack them in a heart beat!
Any standard size tanks that are 5 feet long?
Sure - a standard 120 is 5ft. There is also a 4ft as well.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Where around Chicago is the best place to find the 5ft 120
I just saw them at Aquarium Adventure in Hoffman Estates.
What is that pink and white cute fish
I feel your pain on cleaning the 30 inch tank an im 6' 2" its not easy
Now I don't feel so bad. 😃
What kind of geophagus is in your 150?
Surinamensis
Hey dude is it possible for a 125 gallon to also be tall?
I haven’t heard of that, but there is a 120 tall.
But does it have any affects?
A little harder to clean and still oxygen levels might not be as easily distributed as a shorter tank. Plus your losing the extra bottom area with the four foot tank compared to the five footer for a 120.
In the process of setting up a 125
I like the 6ft length but my 5 ft 120 was perfect for my space
They have a nice viewing window as well!
Is it the one made by tetra?
I've never heard of a 150g 4ft before. The highest volume non custom 4ft we get in the uk is a 4x2x2, our 150g is usually a 5x2x2.(120uk gallons) I agree though 100% it's all about the foot print for big fish
Can’t even get that darn 125 gallon tank in petsmart in my area!! Ugh!
They may be able to order it for you?
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Nope. If the store doesn’t usually carry it they can’t order it. Makes no sense to me but their inventory isn’t the same at every store. Trust me I asked!
