    I moved into my husband's family home that was built in 1937 in 2011. A possum (around 6 weeks old) started hanging out with us. Never tried to touch him or domesticate him, but he thought he was one of my 7 cats. He wouldn't run when I came out on the porch. Charlie lived with us for 5 years. One day we just never saw him again. Possums, in the best of circumstances, usually live no longer than 5, so I gave him a good life. You tried your best but it is real hard to keep babies from the wild alive. I've lost bunnies, squirrels and such. When you rescue them at 3 to 6 weeks old it is a lot easier to have success. So, so sorry for the ones you lost. Bless your heart for caring. You are a wonderful soul. I'm 67 and I love watching your videos. I watch you as a grandmother would a granddaughter. Love, love your strength, independence and heart. Use plexiglass where you removed the plastic. Frame around the plexiglass, and insert it in a way that you can remove when warmer weather appears.

    You're doing an amazing job raising those babies :) I've worked in wildlife rescue for a while and the first thing everyone has to learn is that sadly you can't save all of them...
    Here are some tips that might help (in case you're not already doing this I don't mean to lecture you):
    - weigh them every day to make sure they gain weight properly, if they start losing weight you will know something is not right. just take a bowl an zero it out before weighing the mouse in it
    - if their bellies bloat, try switching to elektrolyts for a day to not further stress their digestive system. it can also help to mix elektrolytes and milk before going back to only feeding milk (and maybe try to add a little more water to the milk afterwards most of the times this milk isn't meant for mice and that can cause dehydration problems)
    - To switch from milk to solid food I made the best experience with oats soaked in their milk as a starter. Mice normally start accepting solid foods around the time their eyes are fully opened
    Keep going!! They are lucky someone is looking out for them :)

    • @marzena_1
      @marzena_1 2 роки тому +19

      I agree with you plus I don't think the solid food was a good idea to start that early. I honestly think that's what caused them to get sick because they are so little and fragile I think it was too early to start introducing solids.
      She is doing amazing for taking care of them and waking up every 2 to 4 hrs feeding all of them.
      I feel bad they passed. At least she has the lil girl left. I have a feeling she'll make it with all the love she's getting 😊

      Great advise, and sadly little ones don't always make it. I think in this case the mice should have been brought to a animal rescue center (if they were willing to take these mice in of course) and leave the care up to professionals. Although I totally understand Hannah's best intentions.

      @@adyona23 2 things to keep in mind here, Hannah lives in a pretty remote area... there probably isn't someone close by that does that kind of rescue... I personally live 30 minutes from Baltimore and there isn't a rehab center for 2 hours near... they aren't as common as one would think. ALSO, most rehab centers (unless they are specialized) usually wont take in mice and "invasive pests"... When I tried finding a center for a starling in my area... the 2 closest places said they most likely would "humanely euthanize" the bird... same for a opossum I found dead in my backyard, I called animal control to come check for babies and they said I could keep the babies if I wanted to, OR they would "humanely euthanize" them...lucky for us she didn't have babies in her pouch...( i had even called a few opossum rescues for advice, and they all pretty much said the same thing...we need more rescues and to keep helping in hopes of maybe becoming a rescuer yourself...this is how it starts) hope this gives you a little perspective.

    I was my brother’s caregiver for the past almost 7 years. In the last weeks I couldn’t get him to eat or keep food down. It seemed like he was rallying, though, and I was starting to think he would bounce back again but he didn’t. I went to give him breakfast and he looked so peaceful, I thought that he was getting good rest. I kept checking on him and finally got close enough to realize that something was wrong. He died on the way to the hospital. I said all the same things to myself…if I’d just checked on him a little earlier (not just peeked in)…if I’d only tried this or that…but it’s probably not true for either of us. We were doing our very best. My brother would have turned 60 two weeks later. The docs predicted he would only make it to age 8 so he had a pretty good run and who knows what your little mice friend would have gone through if you hadn’t protected and fed them. Thank you for being so vulnerable and raw for us. It was really helpful to me. I’m still processing my brother’s death (February) and hearing you say out loud the things I say in my head just really helps. Thanks again.

      Good point. I was watching a video of a duck with a ton of ducklings the other day (humans helping them cross a busy road to a lake ) and the sheer number of ducklings hammered home how low their chance of survival is. I see it around me too, with the local urban wildlife. I see many of the youngsters not making it.

    As a previous mom for a dozen hamsters, I understand how you feel about losing the tiny babies. The first one is always the hardest, but know that it is not entirely you fault. If you could a direct heating lamp above their nest will keep them warm enough, just make sure it is not too close to it though. You are doing whatever you can, Hannah, sometimes things are out of our hand. *hugs*

    For the Porch...maybe cut plexy glass to fit. Make frames for them to fit it. Small pieces of wood to turn & lock them in. Not the right terminology I'm sure...lol. But maybe you'll know what I mean.🌝💙

    • @letticason8435
      @letticason8435 2 роки тому +10

      I agree, I thought plexi too that can be put up like storm windows for winter. Bespoke made to fit each and I agree with some locking mechanism to make them stay.
      I’m so sorry for your tiny little babies to pass but you are absolutely doing your best and that’s more than most people would do with mice. Takes a special human to care for them.

      Framed plexiglass panels would be my suggestion too. You could also do a similar thing with screening for bug season.

    • @amanda-sv7qr
      @amanda-sv7qr 2 роки тому +3

      Agreed - little metal pieces to lock them in would work too. They're called double wing flush clips. Apparently Menards will make custom-sized storm windows too, which would be a pricier but faster option. The added benefit of plexiglass or storm windows would be the ability to reuse them each year and perhaps gain some extra usable time with the porch - similar to a three-season porch.

      plexi glass idea is good. another idea could be using the plastic and putting lattice over top to prevent the plastic from flapping. would be easily removed for the spring and summer months.

    Hannah, years ago I kept a live-captured mouse in a 5 gallon aquarium tank. The entire top was wire mesh, like what you used on part of your mousehouse. At a certain point the mouse (Conrad) got really sick. He looked malnourished and lost a lot of weight. I changed him to a bird cage where he could get more air and his health turned around quickly. Maybe your mices need more air?

    • @lucylocket5262
      @lucylocket5262 2 роки тому +9

      This is a very good point. Aquarium or anything similar to aquarium is not a good idea as a container for mammals. The only problem with cage I can foresee it that Hannah's baby mice were so tiny they could possibly escape through the wires. As their mum proved, mice are escape artists. Saying that, they didn't have have enough mobility to escape very far.

    We tend to humanize animals, and it’s hard understanding how nature can run it’s course like that. It doesn’t make the loss any less painful, but it was sadly their time to go. But they passed being loved and cared for, and that’s what matters in the end. ❤️

    Ok Cinderella. 2 suggestions. Where you stack the firewood between the posts you should probably attach some 2×6's a couple inches off the ground. That will stabilize the posts so they aren't pushed out and also allow air flow while making it less appealing for pests.
    Also on that wonderful new bench (that I love BTW) if you add a scrap board onto the bottom of the two sets of legs on the end it'll keep them from sinking into soft ground while keeping them dryer. That way they don't rot in a couple years. Sorry for the loss of the new pets. You still remind me of a Disney princess with all the animals on this video though lol... 😎

    little baby creatures were cared for so gently, and they were loved! Not only by you but many of your viewers. How fortunate and special their little lives were-compared to not having you around! You’re amazing! 💗💗💗

    Sweetie you have done nothing wrong with the little babies. You are a truly wonderful person just for taking them on. A lot of people wouldn’t care. You are doing your very very best, and that is all anyone can ask of you. I used to raise bunnies, and had babies die too sometimes. I know it's hard. Sometimes there's just something wrong that we can't see. I hope this helps. 🦋 keep being you.

    Hanna! we used to have a house on the Jersey shore with a screened in porch, but when it rained the room and everything in it would get wet! We bought pieces of 1X1 wood and made 2 frames (top and Bottoms} for each window. Then we bought what they call J channel, used for siding on a house and screwed it to each window to use as a track for your frames to fit into. Then stapled heavey duty clear plastic from at that time from Walmart, used to cover table clothes, you buy it by the yard ! We were then able to open either the top of each window or the bottoms! Well just let me tell you we lost our house because of super storm Sandy but the screened in porch and every window went undamged! It work out great! In the winter when it ws freezing outside that room because of the windows and sun shine never went under 40 degrees! Cheap and easy!

    Hannah, my pet mice died while I was cleaning their cage outside, though in the shade I think the heat stressed them out and my boy died, I think his mate was so distraught she died from shock. It happened in the BLINK of an eye I lost my two babies. The fact that you tried and were so caring to what some would consider a pest is so kind and really shows your gentle nature. Best of luck from moving on from this, you did all that you could!

    Wow...watching your last 2 videos really helped me to connect more deeply to compassion for all things. I have always seen mice/rats (rodents) as destructive, terrorizing and disease carrying beings. At least that's the only way I have every experienced them. I realize, all they're doing is trying to survive in a world that can be very hard to make it in when you're part of the minority. I have a greater appreciation for all life and I am deeply moved by the love that you demonstrated in trying to keep all the mice alive after the mom's abandonment, which too is probably natural for mom mice....not sure. Thanks for the lessons and opportunities that I have received from your videos Hannah. All the best with Spring projects at your cabin.

    This was such a hard video to watch as I've been there before. I as a carer have had training and have done rescuing for over 13 years. I lost a baby last year from the unknown and one this year by a bite he got. It's never easy and we can what if ourselves forever. We never know if the mothers leave them because of their death or something is wrong with the babies. You did a wonderful job and the biggest thing they were loved. Not all animals get that they were very lucky. I've never posted a comment on another UA-cam Channel before but your kindness really touched me.

    We’re kindred spirits in more ways than one. Finding deceased anything is never easy but there’s just something extra crushing when they’re animals. Perhaps it’s their innocence. I will legit weep at the sign of death in any and all. I found a deceased rat in my alley recently and although they’re pests, something they have ZERO control over, they’re still life. I provided it a proper burial, again something I do for all found wildlife. Even sprinkled flower petals atop its body before filling in the hole. This insanely gentle, compassionate and nurturing side of you can often be rare to find in individuals nowadays so NEVER lose it! Sending big hugs your way!! 🤍

    You could get some plexiglass "storm windows" to put up over the screens, that's what my grandma did on her 3 season porch. Just get some plexiglass cut to size (maybe label them?) And build frames on the porch windows so that when it gets cold or windy or stormy you can just go out and pop the removable windows in 🤷
