OVERCOMING FEAR AND RIDING A STEP DOWN!!

- Опубліковано 9 жов 2024
- In this video I am teaching Kara overcome fear and send a step down jump.. Kara is a complete MTB beginner but she is progressing well and for me teaching her its been really rewarding seeing her progress to this level.
We started on the basics and progressed through beginner MTB tricks, learnt how to ride corners, hills and common bike park features including jumps and in this video Kara is learning step downs using the MTB hopper pro kicker!
The kicker ramp is perfect for learning because the ramp feels the same in every situation and you can start with a small gap and work your way up as a well as move the same kicker to different situations... perfect for building confidence if you are a beginner!
We hope that you enjoy the video! :)

Her riding has progressed so much since last year...well done to her
For sure!!
@@TomCardy is she sponsored?
@@REDISCOVERBLADES check out her channel...she has a video about it
@@REDISCOVERBLADES yes she is
Kara is so mentally strong to overcome her fear! I’m so proud of her. Tom is great teacher and so patient with her. Keep shredding guys! 🤘
Thanks dude!
When I put on my full face helmet, elbow and knee pads, it gives me a bit of a mental boost to tamp down the fear when trying something new….cheers to Kara for busting thru the fear and trying something new
As much as I love watching pros do their thing and wish we were at that level, it’s a lot more inspiring watching Kara learning and pushing her limits.
"The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear." - Nelson Mandela.
Brave girl, in this case. Well done Kara!
So awesome to see the transition from the pep talk to the big smile on her face as she's pulling the ramp back and talking about getting more air. Nice vid.
Agreed! Thanks dude!
Don't get discouraged Kara. That nosedive was surely scary but its important to know how a nosedive feels as it helps you to understand why something like that happens in the first place. And if you know that, you can actively avoid it in the future right ? ;-)
Agreed! It needs to happen so you know how to prevent it!
Really awesome. I’m petrified of jumps but really want to learn. So watching Kara is very inspirational
Wow man!!! She's got some balls! I know I couldn't do that yet but she's giving me the confidence to push myself that little bit harder every time I go out 🤙🏼
Fair play some scary jumps there, it was nice to hear Cara mention that she was stiff on the last jump and the video will help people with their confidence. Thank you, it helped me loads! Keep it sendy🤙
Well done Kara! I'm so so happy to see that someone is sharing my fear of stepdowns! I always thought i'm the only one, especially because I just started riding and my boyfriend and the other guys i'm riding with are very good and absolutely fearless.. You definitely motivated me to keep trying!
Kara you have the heart of a lioness.
It’s incredible watching your journey of improvement. A true inspiration 👍🏾
Kara is my idol lol. Even though I’m 38 and haven’t rode in this capacity since my teen years, I want to learn to hit these jumps still!
Kara you have done so well allready keep at it you will over come anything in your way.
Great job Kara. My skill level is almost exactly where yours is. These videos really hit close to home for me because I can relate 100%. Thank you.
There’s one of these at a park I ride at occasionally and I rode right around that thing like a pro! Me too.
You guys are the kind of people i would love to hang out with (not only for biking)! Such cool vibes! Love the content!
Kara is a badass! I can 100% identify with being afraid of things like that, and for her to just suck it up and do it is awesome! I also applaud her attitude is wanting to be able to walk before she can run, that makes a lot of sense. I imagine that even though she got the 10 times, it's still somewhat scary for her, and she's not 100% comfortable too. I know whenever I clear a new feature, I always just think it's some sort of a fluke and I'm unconvinced that I'll be able to do it a second time.
Really well done.
Also great call not pushing too much and finishing the day with a giant win.
Well done Kara!! Good coaching from Tom as well.
Thanks dude!
Smart girl, sometimes your gut tells you to stop and you should do that. Next time you will come motivated to conquer the feature. Sometimes I don't even sleep when I'm gonna try something new the next morning. This sport will give you theese thrills from beginner to advanced. This weekend I'll be riding on a volcano and it's the longest steepest descent I will try. It's this mix of fear and Excitement, CAN'T WAIT!!!!
That was excellent guys, a perfect process for all of us who are trying to learn new techniques, jumps, doubles, etc.... Thanks Tom!
Kara wear some more protectors please... especially if u try something new. Fullface and some gloves can make a lot of difference if u crash. Tom should have an eye on you.
Well done Kara.Your progression is coming on brilliantly. 👍
Yo! Thanks!
well done !! it’s interesting how everyone has their own process for getting over fear .
Thanks dude!
KB is awesome. Hardly a beginner at this point! Seems like her legs are much more relaxed and she's looser on the jumps now. Moving the ramp back and going for bigger air...whaaaaat??!! 🤘
Thanks for the great tips for overcoming fear. I am still in my first year and I,deal with fear a lot. Your video gives me more confidence to ride things that I know I have the skills to clear, but I too scared to ride.
Its kinda nervous moment in a bike park when everyone is watching you..lol..kara did great.
Brilliant to watch, that girl has some serious balls!
I totally agree with you Kara, start in small manageable steps and repeat them until it becomes an unconscious reaction, then take that confidence up to the next level and repeat again...if you have a big crash early in the game you may not want to continue on that path.
The slo-mo footage at 10:24 - 10:25 is golden, and tells everything U need about the physics.
The back wheel exits the lip, and both wheels must be in the air, before the front wheel is past it's highest point on the arc (before the front wheel has started descending). Otherwise, you will nosedive.
The more upwards the lip is angled, the truer this holds. You can't soak em up/squash em.
Thus, you need to initiate bringing the front wheel up before the front wheel reaches the end of lip/has ground contact/jump contact.
You guys do this with the initial part of real bunny jumping technique. You shift the entire center of gravity of both bike + rider onto the rear wheel, after coming in centered, knees above toes/pedals. You do this with outstreched arms and outstreched legs, so you are not pulling bike towards you and yourself towards the front wheel - but instead you thrust the body away from front wheel and ground, but pulling the front wheel with you in the process.
Tom is doing this even more exaggerated than Kara, thus gaining bigger air and higher front wheel position at lip. Kara is more relying on having enough speed and remaining centered in this video, before squatting past the lip.
Superb comparison between you two.
And massive props for daring to jump that. You can sense the fear factor. Not many people can step up to that amount of fear and overcome it.
Great video, and really big of Kara to be honest that she's scared (I would be bricking it!), but great to see her progress so quickly on that, but also to know her limits and want to build on what she's done so she can move forward. Really impressive stuff, and thanks to Tom for such a positive video for us to watch.
Awesome Kara, Way to overcome that fear and just Crush it !!! Nitro Circus could have a new up and coming star!!!
Haha nitro circus inbound!
Superb. Its always scary sending a new jump. Very impressed Kara 💪
Agreed!
Step downs are also my least favorite for now. Flatter landings are scary for me. Thanks for the video Tom, and Kara, really helped. Not the first time, thanks again :-)
I always enjoy it when Tom Cardy is with Sam Pilgrim, and only now did I run into Tom's own YT channel !!! Subscribed. Plus Kara as well, great. So nice to see you two working on her gaining confidence and getting really happy on the bike.
This is a great tutorial well done Tom for devoting some of your channel content to teaching
Thanks dude, glad you enjoyed it!
That was epic Kara, congratulations for smashing it. Nice one to you as well Tom, you're so calm and supportive, I love the videos where you're together, you're such an awesome couple, so proud of you both 🤘
thank you dude :)
Well Done Kara......impressed.
Great video. Kara is amazing and so is Tom.
Very useful video to learn how to overcome fear and progress👍
I have a big fear of gap jumps, but I rolled a small one local to me a few times and eventually just went for it! I need to do more before I go for a bigger gap... my latest vid upload was the first time I jumped a gap 💪👍🤟
Go Kara!!!
Need to get such a kicker myself!!!
Great video she nailed that feature easily! Some features just play mind games on ya! I deal with it all the time and once you make it that feeling of relief and usually thinking man that wasn’t so bad is the best 🤣🤣
Fantastic effort, not sure id do that yet. Only today I made an absolute meal of the smallest jump in existence! 🤦🏼♂️
Well done for building the confidence up ... Great work both 👏
great vid Tom/Kara, awesome riding.
High five 🙌 Kara! I feel exactly the same.
I want Tom Cardy as my teacher!! What a precision! Really good improvements Kara!
Thanks Kara/Tom. Great vid. As a new rider, this is really inspiring me to practice!
Great vid guys!! Kara you make me feel like the biggest chicken, well done for conquering your fear!!
Big respect kara, killing it.
Absolute legend Kara! Well done!
Watching her i think the problem is target fixating on looking at her front wheel instead of looking further ahead, subconconciously you look at your wheel and your body will stare to a point where your bodyweights moving forward shifting weight to hit nose first, if she raised her head higher and looked further ahead her weight will balance out and land flatter and more controlled.
i think a good thing to teach kara is how to start boosting jumps and going a bit faster. Currently she just lets the jump do the word. So amazing to see progression though
Once she adds boosting (even just a bit) to her quiver, she’ll discover it actually makes these drop downs easier because you’re controlling the launch more
She's probably one of the fastest learning riders on UA-cam right now... so fun to watch the progress!
Well done Kara!! Bigger balls than me - it looked sick!
Sick 🙌 I can see Kara making some really good progress this year, both seeming very positive 👊
Great video! Great job, Kara!
Great vid guys! Well done as per usual Kara!!!
Nice job Kara! Great progression! Cheers
Kara, this is so relatable and inspiring
She's doing so good mate! love the bikes. Keep it Up!
Way to go !
Step downs are the scariest!
Mint video mint tutor & bravo 👏 for facing your fears very impressive 👌
...kara dragging the ramp back to get more air . what a bossette!
Kara is such a legend.
That's an epic acheivement well done! I'm 40 years old and have been biking on and off for 30 years and I couldn't do that yet!
Thanks dude!
Same situation so can totally relate. It's nice to be out with someone as well who can see how you're doing things, I often have a mate as I'd rather not try these things by myself.
I've been watching these videos for nearly a year and Kara's progress is really impressive
Keep sending dude!
Just started riding this year. Along with watching you n Kara. Think you are awesome Tom just the right amount of encouragement but yet you never force Kara to do things. I think Kara is really brave aswell great riding 👌👌👍
Thanks dude!
Your videos are inspiring and you good at riding...
Kara, you're an inspiration.
Great to see your progression. I wonder if a bit more protective gear might do a bit towards easing your mind? 🤔
A full helps to build confidence!
" The only place that fear can exist is in our thoughts of the future. It is the product of our imagination, causing us to fear things that do not at present and may not ever exist. That is near insanity. Now do not misunderstand me, danger is very real, but fear is a choice.” This quote from a movie called " After Earth "..... Well done Tom for being such great teacher, athlete, and sharing your journey with us.
She broke the 'Rule of 3.' If after 3 attempts and you don't do it...STOP, and wait for another day.
Good job on overcoming the fear (uncertainty) without bucking yourself.
well done im trying to get around a steep off camber switchback done it once but crashed every other attempt im padding up and manning up till i nail it
Send it!
I’ll update you 😂
Soon as she learns to boost off ramps and gets abit gamer she is going to be a good rider! Got a gem there Tom lad! 💎
Thanks bro! I agree!
Well done!! I’ve watched you come along so well!!! Where is this place, I travel the country with work and take my bike along, I like to hit as many good spots as possible, this place looks great!
That was an awesome video, and really helps Analyze how over come a new jump
Fear is typically due to lack of technique. We always fear what we don't understand.
Luckily Kara has a great teacher and her technique has improved resulting in less fear 👍
Well done Kara jumps and drops are my fear! You jumped that brilliantly...next you’ll be sending backflips👍🤟
Thanks dude!
Why are you not using full face helmets? You probably have yours at home but it would be a good thing to promote, actually wearing them. I face planted on my Omnium cargo from a strap getting into my front wheel having it landing on my back so that the saddle was pushed in (and even protecting it with my arms before protecting myself as a weird reaction). Not to mention the 25 or so needles cracking through the roof of my mouth and the preparing for the titanium screw in my skull with hammer and chisel further in than the anesthesia worked properly, the price of two teeths suddenly rattling like two spines or snakes was TWICE MY Shimano 105 equipped bike (held down the cost building it from scratch). That Giro helmet I directly bought can often scare people who have never seen one before but the chin section can be removed and I do it from time commuting when not planning to go fast.
Love watching Kara ride. I’m a very similar skill level and ride at Danbury so this helps a lot
Well done karA 🤘🏼🔥🤙🏼🤙🏼
Well done Kara you are much braver than I am keep up the good work slow and steady and above all safe
Yo!
@@TomCardy Kara has done very well over the time I have been watching her. Your teaching methods work very well Its nice to see experts helping the rest of us try and catch you up Well done Tom
moving that kicker back like a boss
Great job :) I’m always scared about the landing more then the jump :/ I have face planted so many times:/
Impressive !!! (Having the same kind of feelings just before sending myself)
I hope. that this video helps!
You did it! Flying!
Yo!
I would still be scared just to do the kicker that high.i like a table behind it.and I am told to make my motion bigger when jumping ; chest forward, extend my legs , get the bars to my pelvis and then pull the bike up with my legs.( Like a bunny hop ) I barely see Kara do anything of the kind, yet she is clearing all kind of jumps .
Good Job Kara!!! 👊🏽⚡️⚡️
You two are brilliant
Great job KJ , Tom your a great coach and always so calm and collected ✌️✊🏽👍🤙🏼
Thanks dude!
Kara you should be so proud of yourself for overcoming your fear. Amazing seeing how much you have progressed. Having an epic teacher definitely helps. Keep it up! Your both Awesome! ✌️😎✌️
Super helpful, well done!
Well done Kara!
I think that riding an EMTB all the time probably slows down progression. The heavy bike makes it so you don't have to use very much technique to actually "jump" the bike. I notice even in some of her bigger sends she almost just straight arms it, which can lead to OTBs. Good progression, but I think it would have been better to start jump progression on the hardtail and then move to the full sus after the skills are there. I've seen a lot of riders get twisted trying to let the bike do the work. I'm sure you have to... Good stuff tho.
Shouts out from the PNW!
That’s exactly what I was thinking. It’s like riding a dirt bike. I ride a hard tail though. When you jump a hard tail you have to have your technique on point. If you master a hard tail though and then jump on an enduro you feel like you can just blow through anything and not even worry about your line
Totally agree. Plus E-Bikes are for people who are older or who have impairments, IMO. If you're young and fit, you should be earning your turns!
- Also from the PNW ;)
Practice & confidence to achieve anything
Thanks for the no music intro! Step downs with big landings are the best! I think with a big grass hill and a full face it would make it less scary, and less dangerous.
Agreed! Thanks dude!
Well done for doing it!!!
Great video. Great presentation, well done Kara.
Thanks dude!
Good job girl, progressing nicely 👌 Tom,sir your a top teacher. Keep up the good work & stay safe out there
Thanks dude!
