What’s Your Personality Type? | An Introduction to the Enneagram

  • The Enneagram of Personality is a system used by numerous mental health professionals to get more insight into one’s character, and as a method for self-development. The Enneagram consists of nine personality archetypes that are interconnected in different ways.
Some say that the Enneagram is liberating compared to the conventional methodology of mental health disorders because none of the archetypes are inferior or defective in themselves. Nevertheless, as it focuses as much on negative traits as on positive traits, it isn’t an ‘ego-flattering’ tool either.
The Enneagram leaves room for overlap between and within different personality types. Also, it acknowledges that nobody is purely ‘one type’, but rather a ‘basic type’ that transforms within its own range of characteristics and also corresponds with types that it’s connected to.
This video is an introduction to the Enneagram of Personality.

A few sour commenters with this one, eh buddy. You do your best and then they go through it with like a fine tooth comb and to make it short, it's a reminder that you can't please everyone, especially ones who are hard to please. Lol. Most of us though appreciate your work and have respect for it. If they want more or if they want perfection, in a 10-20 minute video, they're too much and should simply go elsewhere, like a *"normal "* person would.

Personality is one thing. Philosophy is another. How does each impact the other? Is it personality that molds philosophy into a personal guide? Is it philosophy that amplifies positive aspects and softens negative aspects? Is there a mutual trade or compromise or struggle between them? Do certain personalities more easily gravitate toward specific philosophies?
I always get curious about possibilities like these and I'm always excited to learn more.

I've been studying the Enneagram for the past 5 years and used its concepts to develop myself. I've been able to develop myself from a core 5 to an 8. It's taught me how to engage with others and find peace. I think many times in life people ask themselves why are the way they are and not like others but I think the Enneagram does a great job showing that we are all different and that's perfectly okay. I like to tell people to think of your core type like a computer, and all of life is data, based on your core type you will interpret that data differently than others. If you find these ideas interesting you can also overlap the Enneagram with MBTI, and Cultural Psychology.

I found that locking myself into a personality type will create limitations... I am many things created through chaos, strife and a horrible past. While I am scarred I see truth, in myself and in others, this also means I dont tolerate lying very much at all. Nor do I tolerate hypocrisy. I am creative and anti-social with the ability to be very social. I am a budding singer, writer, computer graphic designer, computer programmer and an excellent student. I work hard out doors but dont fear doing nothing when I want. As I listen to this I can pick things out that are me but I am not any one class

I saw this before somewhere, in a book. But because the book was about things that seemed "not connected to this world" I merely glanced upon it and put the book away. Now I find this back on your channel and it sparked my interest. On it's own it's a very interesting concept, without any personal commantary about why you should use it, and how it helped etc...
I thank you for this, for explaining it, for showing it how it works but in such a way that it steers clear of all those personal idea's and experiences people always put in it.

Not going to lie, the integration/disintegration lines feel pretty arbitrary to me.
I'm an Eight, that's the core motivation I have. If you're interested in subtypes, I'm the Self-Preservation Eight subtype, or the "Eight that looks like a Five",.and tends to be more Introverted and cautious about their tendency towards aggression. They tend to lean on some Five strategies, such as retaining wealth, being a bit of a hoarder, to deal with their Eight fear and motivation of avoiding being controlled. For me, having money is important for my freedom.
When I'm in a bad place and I'm in a bad psychological position, I'd say I disintegrate more into an unhealthy Four (feeling incompatible and defective, unable to compete with others in terms of the mainstream, and thus have to find another way to do something - I have to find my niche per se.)
In health,.O tend to experience great motivation and the desire to do something and complete it. My periods of health are a mixture between healthy Eight and Three.
I'm more tolerant of the wings. The wings generally contrast with the main type in order to gives focus away from the main type. My Eight side tells me to be on guard for people who could exploit me, whilst Seven is saying "Relax, enjoy yourself. Think happy thoughts, look on the bright side of life, and how good things could be in the future. Seven tells me to often avoid things that could control me, and thus I'm often evasive of being controlled, more than I directly fight against it." Meanwhile I tend to suppress Nine, since it tells me to accept being submissive, and that's something I just can't do. I've always got to be in control of myself and demonstrating autonomy somehow.
I suppose me being an Eight at my core engine, shows how nuanced each type could possibly be. I am not what people think of when they think of an Eight stereotype.

I believe the results of these type of tests helps us understand ourselves more and it also helps us to strengthen our qualities and face our weakness, but at the same time, I have a feeling that the results also makes us marked, labeled, thus we're expected to act and think in a certain way.
Does anyone else have this type of thought?

I took the mbti, but I haven’t experienced half the stuff that it asks how I act in...I just don’t think I’ve lived long enough to see consistency in how I act, and any instances I do have are from when I was a kid. I can guess what I’d do, but I don’t know. I’m subject to change over the next decade, so maybe it’ll be clearer then. Btw I got INTP-T twice, and got ISFP-T yesterday (I changed some answers to neutral after I realized what I said above). Also, I’m balanced in big pic/detailed oriented. lol that’s because I know I have to be organized, scheduled, have routines etc, but I don’t do it bc It’s hard. So good luck to y’all in finder who you are ✌️

You could try googling the 8 cognitive functions and try to type yourself using that. Avoid using quizzes, and try to take the time to actually learn about the way they work together. There’s this UA-cam channel, Objective Personality, that has a lot of good info and the hosts are pretty funny (and you’ll see them make fun of stereotypes quite a lot). It’ll be confusing at first, and you might need to rewatch videos multiple times, but I do think it’s worth it (I’ve been able to explain some of my own behaviors with it, though I’m still learning and only 80% sure that I’ve typed myself correctly). Be prepared to tear down your ego, try to think about what scares you, and remember feedback that others have given you in the past.

I have always wondered if an individual is capable of truly evaluating their own personality. Many people, if not most, see either too much of the dark traits in themselves or they give themselves too much credit for the more positive aspects of the personality. (I tend to be too hard on myself in these type evaluations.) A better way of approaching this, I believe, is daily reflection and meditation, thinking of the moment, what's happening around me, and how I am reacting to it on that particular day. Each day brings a little improvement and peace....usually. I love your videos and will always watch and listen, but I think I'm going to let this one slide on past. It seems too complicated and worrisome for a Taoist lifestyle like mine. I could be wrong, but I'll keep an open mind. I'll revisit this another day and see what happens.

Agreed, you know yourself the best, but you aren’t always honest and objective. Some answers are me beating myself for my past, others are my ideals for my future self. I am 61 years old, by the way, and I think I will always question any self evaluations outside of how I am handling things one day, one moment at a time. Those present moments tell the truth everytime. They have not had time to be glossed over and must be dealt with. That lifestyle has reduced my strees tremendously. I want to think I listen to the observations and advice from those people I respect. Hopefully, I do.

This needs to be taught more. It's not the be-all-end-all, but it described things about myself I thought no one else understood. It also illustrated parts of my personality growth that I had discovered myself, albeit over the course of years. The enneagram is a great tool for spiritual growth and self actualization. Each type has their own strengths and flaws, but it also illustrates how we can be our own worst enemy. The enneagram is best used in tandem with other methods of growth, whether therapy, yoga, mindfulness meditation, etc. The enneagram, when fully appreciated, is really the tool for helping you open your third eye.

  • @StormKillzone

Idk I feel like the enneagram is more about the negative traits within oneself, and shows more about the ego of someone than the actual core being. In my opinion it is more flawed than the MBTI test. INFJ 4w5 here tho

If I have understod Enneagram then it is mostly about the flaws in humanity. It is not a true reflection of ones personality. It simply tries to explain ones weaknesses. MBTI is trying to explain ones personality in general and Enneagram tries to explain ones flaws.

A certain hypothesis just appeared on my mind. I´m a 5w4 sx/sp 549, and I fit into the 5w4 description. However, I see a lot of 6 aspects in me, which made me doubt if I don´t have a 6 wing instead of a 4 one. I struggle with anxiety and lately people had complained about me saying "I´m afraid of..." too often. This relates to the fact I´m undergoing a bit of a difficult period and it makes me more fearful. Also, I tend to forcast and try to prepare for the worst outcome and when something terrible happens (which I didn´t think about) that increases my anxiety and obsession with bad predictions. Nevertheless, I just realized I don´t relate much with positive 6 traits. I guess I´m loyal? I don´t know, I´m not the opposite but that´s definitely not one of the fisrt words I´d use to describe myself, I´m neither much commited or responsible. So.. my hypothesis is that similarly as the Enneagram has integration and disintegration for each type, maybe the weaker wing also manifests primarly negatively until we try to actively develop it. At least, when you´re young perhaps (I´m 19). Idk, I could be being a little inductive here, but I´d like to know what other people experiences with this are.

I think there's a reason psychologists have more or less abandoned the idea of personality tests. They will never work. People don't fit into boxes. There are countless things that can affect the way you act from year to year, month to month, day to day. You're not the same person around your mother as you are your s/o. I think the only reason people pay attention to these kind of tests is because it makes them feel special. The truth is most people are perfectly average.
