I BOUGHT A 1978 COLVIC NORTHERNER 13 YEARS AGO WHEN MY DAUGHTER WAS 5 AND MY SON WAS 2 AND ME BEING A CITY BOY NEVER HAD A CLUE OR AN IDEA WHAT IT TOOK TO CREW A BOAT ON THE OPEN SEA ! BUT FAST FORWARD TO THE WHERE I AM NOW AND HAND ON HEART ME AND MY FAMILY HAVE HAD THE MOST AMAZING MEMORIES AND EXPERIENCES ON OUR SUMMER BOATING HOLIDAYS ! I'VE NEVER SAT OR TAKEN A TRAINING COURSE OR SKIPPERS LESSON ! I'VE LEARNT BY GOING OUT AND MAKING MISTAKES FIRST HAND , PROBABLY NOT THE BEST WAY OF DOING THINGS BUT I TAKE MY HAT OFF TO YOU GUYS ! WE NEED PEOPLE LIKE YOU AND ME WHO ARE A BREATH OF FRESH AIR IN A WORLD WHERE OUR FREEDOMS ARE UNDER REAL CONSTRAINTS SO I SALUTE YOU FROM ONE CAPTAIN TO ANOTHER HERE IN THE UK ! NEVER CHANGE YOUR SELF AND WHAT A GREAT CREWMEMBER YOU HAVE THERE IN YOUR PARTNER FANTASTIC !
I’m 16 and I’ve been boating basically since I was in the womb and this is an awesome and crazy trip, I hope y’all have been embraced by the boating community and love this amazing hobby/lifestyle
Wow that’s awesome Andy! Yea the boating community is incredible and has welcomed us with open arms. We are so grateful. Best part is when you wave at another boat they always wave back. Everyone just having a great time! Hope to see you out on the water sometime!!
Hate to break it to you, but you're not gonna be able to do much in 60 days unless you can find a barn or someplace indoors at the marina. Barrier coating, epoxy resin, bottom paint, fairing compound ect all need certain temps in order to cure properly. That is 65* and higher unfortunately. With dew, rain, frost, snow ect in VA - you're not gonna get many windows of opportunity. I'm not too far north of you and I don't forsee many/any more days to do wet-work. Shoulda gone south!
I have been a boat owner for over 40 years (Grady Whites only!) Before I got my first boat I learned about boating.. A radio is a MUST and first thing you should have!! You should take the boaters safety course!!
Kelvin Rees (UK) I watch a number of sailing youtube videos but this is one of a kind and has captured my attention. I have to question the wisdom of your purchase, it's certainly going to need a lot of work/tlc but I have to admire your amateur enthusiasm and spirit of adventure. You certainly have been lucky on your maiden voyage. Still the boat floats and the motor works, so that's a good start. Make the most of all the positive and valuable comments that have been made and enjoy your adventures. I shall watch with keen interest on how you get on. KR
Thanks Kelvin!! I'm glad you like our channel and are coming on this journey with us! I can't believe the boat is still floating either lol. Really appreciate the support!!
Stumbled across your channel and glad I did. Pretty balls to do what you did with no experience!!! You will have great stories to tell your grandchildren!!! Keep up the good work!!
inexperience and not a safety boat in case of unforeseen problems is nuts but gutsy. I have the need to see where you go on this journey. I wish you the best.
Hahaha. Yea we’re kinda wingin it on this one. It’s been floating for a year so that’s a good sign. Most of the water inside is from the rain I believe. So many holes in the top. Thanks for your support!!
Wow!!! You really have balls of a giant and heart of a warrior to take on such a journey with no experience. You two are made for each other. I can’t wait for the refits. Oh, just sub and bell on! Good luck!!!
Thanks so much!! Being on this boat together really helped our teamwork skills. Nothing like trying to stay alive to strengthen things hahaha. Thanks for your support!!
I agree with Robert T once your back In the water the mast boom running rigging lights navigation steering. Another UA-cam Chanel said your be more disappointed in live on what you didn’t do in life by more when what you did. Love to see your progress on your boat and your adventures keep posting you guys are awesome
Hi, I’m Andy from England and I’m so proud of how you two are doing your boats. I’m going to get my new boat this weekend and have similar issues of moving the boat to get it on to a trailer. Please keep making these videos as they are an inspiration to many new boaters. Thanks
This has been a fun watch! I see a few negative comments but all I can say is that you don't learn by sitting at home! You did what you had to do and personally I'm proud you seem to have pulled it off so far. Brings back lots of memories about finding a derelict and having fun with it! I have a Catalina 25 swing keel I'm working on getting to Deltaville from the Richmond area but always wanted a Catamaran! On your sixty day time limit, spend it all on getting the hulls beefed up and waterproof. (I see lots of fiberglass in your immediate future. Lol!) The rest can be done tied to a dock, moored or even anchored provided you can conjure up a decent generator for power tools when and if needed. Good luck on the project! I've subscribed to see what happens next!
You remind me of an old friend who bought his first sailboat around 1980. A little 24' hunter that he outfitted with a sail made from an old car cover. The pocket for the rear view mirror flapping in the breeze! Makes me laugh just thinking about it almost 40 years later. He would sail that boat to Catalina Island, taking on water the whole time. I think you had a great deal of luck on this journey and I hope it continues. I'm subscribed just so I can see what happens!
Defo take the 60 days, do everything exterior. Patch, paint and sort every single bit of rust. Once your 60 days is you'll have a solid boat with out the stress of water coming in. You've still got a motor that seems to be working perfectly fine so far so the mast and all that can wait if need be. You can do the interior while sailing or docked up at different locations and build that up over time. Same sort of thing happened to me but with my camper I recently bought. 1990 express, old, not the biggest and abit of a project. But I love it. I recently got offered a space in a workshop for 2 weeks which is coming to an end and I've spent every night sorting all the rust, paint, cleaning up the exterior and it's now solid and looks amazing 😎
I had the exact same 1976 Cherokee MkII for several years in SanFran Bay. Great boat and it help up again the Bay's famous "SLOT". I built a helm and put a steering wheel on it for the twin rudders - I put the electric start 4 cycle Honda in a fixed position. It was a LOT easier to handle than the set-up you have. I moved to Phoenix so I sold it to a guy who who then took it to Hawaii. With some modifications I am sure it is a great boat to run up on the beach in Hawaii. You have a VERY LONG way to go to get it functional as a sailing boat. Good luck.
That's so cool Bob! Yea rudders would be a lot easier. Probably going to keep it motor for now. That would be so cool to pull it up on a beach somewhere. Wow!
Intellectually I know these videos were all edited and posted after they got home. Emotionally though every time a new one is posted I think "My god, they're still alive."
Good luck with your ongoing adventures, I really wish you good luck fixing that boat up. Try to stay focused on how awesome it will be when everything is done, you can literally sail anywhere in the world and live there. You guys seem like a really genuine and nice couple and myself and my partner wish you all the best luck :-)
I'm sure by the end of this trip you'll have learned a lot, although there's always more to learn. I give you a lot of credit for attempting a trip like that and never have even driven a boat before. I want to thank you for the videos, I used to live in Chesapeake, VA when I was in the Navy, imparticular Great Bridge just on the south side of the locks. It was nice seeing something familar in your videos. I plan on getting back down there some day on my own boat. Just wanted to wish you both good luck and tell you I'm subscribing for sure! Keep the videos coming. Please try for once a week if you can!!
Its great to watch your videos since you just started learning. The cat has so much potential! Take your time working on it and do it right. Don't shortcut as she could be a great sailor.
Those real estate photos are fantastic, you are very good at your work, so good that I see that you needed to take on something a little more challenging. Love the lines and look of that boat, very good eye, keep up the good work.
Thanks so much Sean!! You’re right. I’m ready for the next challenge! We really like the way this boat looks and can’t wait to get some new paint on it. Really appreciate your support and kind words!
Just found your channel tonight. Wife and I have been rv'ing for about 4 months now full time and when done touring the lower 48 are doing exactly what you two are doing. Getting the boat and cruising. We are actually in Hampton VA right now until the 22nd of November. I'm a retired marine and think it's awesome that you two just decided to go for it. Where in Hampton is your boat? Would love to come by and get some pictures!
Hey!! Yes we sure did! Evelyn is a sweatheart!!! I was shooting a house and she walked over so I showed her how to fly it and let her press the camera button to take the pictures. She said she didn't know if she would ever get to see one in person. We had a great time hanging out and talking with her. Made my day. I hope everything goes well for you all next year. Thanks for reaching out!!
The Annapolis Book of Seamanship is an excellent book that must be read and used as a resource. Everything you need to know about sailing is in there. For starters, for about $25 you could buy the ASA 101 book, Sailing Made Easy that covers ALL the basics ... it is a steep learning curve. Make an Amazon wishlist for some of these items and I bet a subscriber would get it for you.
I'm about to buy a fixer upper sail boat my self that's what brought me here not. A bad buy just gonna take a lil time and some dedication I cant wait to see it finished
The easiest and probably most attractive way to cover all that bare fiberglass is with a vinyl fabric from Rerum. No joke. that is their name. Used to be able to get it as a special order from West. I have turned a number of old boats into show pieces using cream colored fabric and contact cement.
@@9to5less I made a typo. The company is Redrum, nor Rerum. Go to Westmarine.com. and type redrum into the search window. A number of different fabrics and adhesives will pop up. Many West Marine stores have fabric catalogs so you can get a good idea of weight, padding, texture, etc. I have used Redrum fabrics on horizontal and vertical surfaces to cover many unsightly defects. I think I used their Seaquest Vinyl but do not recall for certain. I used it 6 years ago to replace a headliner in a charter catamaran and it looks like new today. Have never had any adhesion issues just using simple contact cement from Lowes. Did you look at the Iroquois for sale in St Augustine?
I had the coast guard called for me in that boat next ti the statue of liberty trying to deliver it to James. I had to fiberglass the wholes in the middle of the bomb storm a couple yrs ago and plug all those screw holes. I've got some stories if your interested
Oh we are very interested in hearing more! That sounds so crazy!! Are you still on the east coast? Glad you made it safely and kept this boat floating. You’re the man!!
@capt nice! We got some bits and pieces of it but would love to hear the full story. Are you near VA? Feel free to message me on the FB page or email at 9to5less1@gma...
Get a handheld VHF and just listen. You’ll figure it out. Get some cruising guides (I would never go down an unfamiliar section of the ICW without one. You got some big time yard work coming, so pick a good yard. You edit pretty good and you both have the right attitude!
Wow, what a fun adventure you two are having on the ICW. I'd like to purchase a liveaboard sailing catamaran in about the same condition as yours is in but am looking for something that's made out of light weight composit and about 43 ft. long or so. Actually, I'd like to find a boat just like another UA-cam channel has called Onboard Lifestyle. If you go to their channel, they built there boat from the condition yours is in and did an absolut increadable job. They show just about every aspect of the build and how to do it for the most part. It would be the perfect channel for you to watch as you fix up your boat. Looking forward to see what you come up with and how you do things.
Hey Robert. We will definitely check out that channel and learn as much as we can. Thanks for the tip!! We hope you find a good boat soon and get started!!
@@9to5less I've owned many boats in my lifetime and have done many repairs to them for upgrades and then some that got damaged. You need to film your progress for that UA-cam cash.
Hey, while your in a place where you might have access to boat parts, get some impellers for the outboard. They are located in the bottom of the outboard. They suck water into it for cooling. All marine engines have them and they are replaced regularly, made of rubbery stuff, so can degrade with time and use. Extremely common repair but without a good impeller your engine will overheat and be gone. Look into zincs very soon, some are actually in the outboard, they should be mounted on the outside of the boat for salt water. Guessing you don't have the two marine motors that are usually installed in the boat ? If you do, let me know about them please. Also, ask the people in the marina and people who get around if there are sunken things, boats mostly, in the waterways you are going to travel down, one boat hit one in a video , had no markers.
Yea those sunken unmarked boats are scary. That’s a great idea about some impellers. There were originally rudders on the back of the hulls instead of motors but someone put sugar scoops on this one and we are really liking them!
I agree with Robert T., get her out of the water and take care of as much of the hull work as you can in that time period! I haven't noticed any running lights , only that one "mast light" ! Took a huge chance of not being seen by other boats sir. Your lack of simple boating etiquet/knowledge is going to come back and bite you and soon. Get some books, read up on the basics of boating and for goodness sake, talk to actual boating people. They will be your best source of just what what! I'm praying for you kids and , so far, enjoying your journey.
Even on UA-cam videos you can suggest the basic safety equipment you should have on your as well as most wanted most important things PFD's I also think I mentioned about do you have any lights for a night time because somebody could be going flying down a channel slam into the boat I know I would have the lights on the boat anchored up and on the side of the channel. UA-cam has basic boating video instructions I'm sure they could watch them, I don't think there's even any bilge pumps on there boat. They don't have a marine radio. any type of emergency arises I mean to get no communication in front of the coast guard or anybody to help them out. I've been watching the two or three videos I'm interested in seeing how much progress they make or what's going to happen if the coast guard gets an eyeball on them is the vote even registered in his name I doubt it..
as you start the rebuild...you can do anything with UA-cam resources! i am building a boat from scratch! wood is very forgiving and fiberglass has limited steps..."piece of pie"!
Sorry for the multiple comments, but I just wanted to say, great real estate photo work. I figured you had previous photography experence, due to the excellent drone footage. :)
Hey guys - a 'WINDOW' in sea terms is a PORTHOLE'. Jess for God's sake weara harness when underway. You are giving me heart attack. Never take the sea for granted. LOVE YA
Ok, you got me hooked all the way from South Africa. Looking forward to your restoration uploads :) ... Just a thought though ... You might want to invest in a couple of Inboard engines.
Hundreds Bru!! I spent last winter overlanding there. Hit every province except for the very northern one. It's amazing there!! The camo hat I'm wearing is actually from Zone Offroad in Joberg. Thanks for coming along on this journey with us!!
Two apps you might consider... Windy which is free and is a great resource for weather, tides, wind etc.and Navionics which is about $15/year for an excellent for charting. Do take a safe boating course. You were very lucky in your trip north. It could have been much worse.... Have fun!
It seems rather simple to me. You repair all of the hull "damage" first which could take most of that time then it goes back in water for you to do the interior repair...But that depends on how extensive the interior job is and whether or not it needs to be level sooo..Hmmm
Okay, so I've just binged all of your videos since you went to get this *boat*??? You may have hooked me with the little whisper at the end. ... "subscribe" That's gotta be some subliminal messaging but it has worked! LOL Subscribed!!
I'm enjoying the journey you're taking . I just hope you at least have basic safety equipment aboard like a fire extinguisher . You really should have running lights too .
Yeah, the shutter button on smartphones is an easy one to miss. We've had our phones since December 2016 and my parents didn't know about the shutter button until a couple of weeks ago. Admittedly, we do have a phone case. Oh, and our Sony does a half press for autofocus too, so pretty much just a camera. In fact, we have a digital camera that we bought a few years before the smart phones which is 14.1 megapixels and the phones are 16 MP, so there wasn't much point in upgrading from a film camera; we should have just waited for the smartphones.
laughing at "hot 95F" here in florida thats a cool front..1st rule of off grid living, shower in the rain whenever possible! Im a grouchy ol son of the beach but I think drone videos are WAY WAY over done..If yaw make it to jacksonville on the ICW I'll look ya up
Love your enthusiasm, hopefully you look back at what your first journey was and cringe a little. All power to both of you, lovin the vids and hoping all goes well for both you. Well done.
We do have some red and green lights on the front and a white one on top. Definitely want to be seen at night. Thanks for the concern. We’ll be upgrading the lights soon to a more permanent solution.
Friends and family tell me that only experienced people can get a sailboat and start living your dream. Oh yea and (people with money). Thank you for proofing them wrong. I was one of your first subscribers besides your family and friends. please sell your drone and buy a Radio. Best of luck to you and to all the people that watch and post comments. BE NICE ! WE all enjoy boating and must enjoy folks with boats.

Great advice! Thank you!

Interesting to watch your travel at your young age. Have faith and keep going. You are creating memories.
Looking forward to seeing what you do with the boat through the refit. You'll be inspiring a lot of people!
Get a tarp! A pancho, anything. Some string. Cover your cockpit from the sun and rain! That beach umbrella bruh
The beach umbrella is righteous! Chill Dawg!!
Your doing great guys looking forward to seeing your boat when your done with restoring it good job 🤙

Keep it up, love to see intelligence and adventure mixed together in the younger generation, live your best life!!
Thanks for sharing your journey, guys. Good luck!
You guys, with that boat, remind me of the Beverly Hillbilly's, but without the millions that they acquired, at least not yet. ;) Good Luck to ya!!!

I kid you not Netflix needs to put this as a series cause what an adventure.
Just watched ya videos very well done with no experince. Looking forward for next vid.

It’s a 1976 sailcraft Iroquois mkii
Keep on Keeping on Guys....Love the tenacity...Cheers
You got it Dennis!! Thanks for your kind words and support!!

Awesome trip!!!
The easiest and probably most attractive way to cover all that bare fiberglass is with a vinyl fabric from Rerum. No joke. that is their name. Used to be able to get it as a special order from West. I have turned a number of old boats into show pieces using cream colored fabric and contact cement.
That's very interesting! I was actually wondering if something like that existed. Kinda like how cars are getting wrapped in vinyl now.
@@9to5less I also got a bit of the history when I bought it and why it's in the condition its in
@capt nice! We got some bits and pieces of it but would love to hear the full story. Are you near VA? Feel free to message me on the FB page or email at 9to5less1@gma...
Go to a toy store and get a kiddie pool to cool off and bathe in. Also since you have no emergency dingy. lol.
This is the best idea you had! I'll bet Joshua Slocum did not have one.
it's a shall boat, find some land near the water, hire a 50T crane and lift it out. You can save heaps while taking your time to do the refit.
You are a brave couple!!
what an adventure with a cute first mate
Get a handheld VHF and just listen. You’ll figure it out. Get some cruising guides (I would never go down an unfamiliar section of the ICW without one. You got some big time yard work coming, so pick a good yard. You edit pretty good and you both have the right attitude!
You guys are such a cute couple! I just love you guys!
Thanks so much Robert! Comments like this help keep us going!
Can not wait to see the build....
Super cool channel full of adventure
Really enjoy your videos
thanks for the vlog!
Some good advice here.
Look for a local US Power Squadron class. This is a great way learn about rules of the road and navigation.
LOVE YA
I like the look of the boat ! lay in new fiberglass and spray some gel coat at it ! a much larger motor to get that beast moving !
You definitely had a lot of eyes on you while you were sailing through Norfolk lol
Hahaha. I believe it. Even lots of military choppers circling us for a while. We didn’t blend in at all lol
Ok, you got me hooked all the way from South Africa. Looking forward to your restoration uploads :)
... Just a thought though ... You might want to invest in a couple of Inboard engines.
or even some kind of life raft......
Hundreds Bru!! I spent last winter overlanding there. Hit every province except for the very northern one. It's amazing there!! The camo hat I'm wearing is actually from Zone Offroad in Joberg. Thanks for coming along on this journey with us!!
@@9to5less Next time you get close to Cape Town, let me know :)
But did you have a great time.
We did watching you on you tube!
Two apps you might consider... Windy which is free and is a great resource for weather, tides, wind etc.and Navionics which is about $15/year for an excellent for charting. Do take a safe boating course. You were very lucky in your trip north. It could have been much worse....
Have fun!
Next video soon? The suspense is killing me. 😆
That looks great, in America you have these water ways are they made with excavator
Love the vids, but one tip I hope you'll take heed to. When you guys are talking to lower the volume of the background music some. :)
It seems rather simple to me. You repair all of the hull "damage" first which could take most of that time then it goes back in water for you to do the interior repair...But that depends on how extensive the interior job is and whether or not it needs to be level sooo..Hmmm
You better take some vitamins your gonna need it to fix that boat....all the power to you
That spider was huge
Okay, so I've just binged all of your videos since you went to get this *boat*??? You may have hooked me with the little whisper at the end.
... "subscribe"
That's gotta be some subliminal messaging but it has worked! LOL Subscribed!!
Well done guy's
Thanks Charlyboy!!
I see no LIFE JACKETS Yikes ???? Glad you made it.
This reminded me of the movie The African Queen
laughing at "hot 95F" here in florida thats a cool front..1st rule of off grid living, shower in the rain whenever possible!
Well done.
For the future: use signal lights after dusk, bigger vessel might Just crush your boat and dont even notice that
We do have some red and green lights on the front and a white one on top. Definitely want to be seen at night. Thanks for the concern. We’ll be upgrading the lights soon to a more permanent solution.
Did you have running lights?
Friends and family tell me that only experienced people can get a sailboat and start living your dream. Oh yea and (people with money). Thank you for proofing them wrong. I was one of your first subscribers besides your family and friends. please sell your drone and buy a Radio. Best of luck to you and to all the people that watch and post comments. BE NICE ! WE all enjoy boating and must enjoy folks with boats.
Thanks for being with us from the beginning Jack! We got a radio and luckily didn’t have to sell the drone to get it :)
