Love this type of history! I’ve lived in botetourt county my whole life and it amazes me how much people of the area know nothing of the history of the James river from the head waters to Richmond Being that I guide on the James river for musky and smallmouth and much more, I get to see the upper James river canals and locks and the construction of them! Some still stand tall and some are slowly becoming more and more taking away from the river! Love taking lunch breaks around the tall structures of the canal gate or dams and showing folks how beautiful and interesting the canals are! The coolest thing that I have discovered is a batteau boat which is sunk in the river on the banks of the James just south of Eagle rock, you can still see the nose of the boat and a little bit of half of it come out the banks, it’s in about 8-10 foot of water but on clear water days it pretty visible to the eye Love to see it taking out to show the history and what the boats looked like but it’s probably not doable
My Dads homestead on the James river in the 1600's . I went to Buchanan and followed the water through the mountains around Roanoke , down to Danville , got a map and headed to Clarksville where our homestead river pooled up and exercised my VA home loan. I love Virginia to no END.
