Given how important and impressive this story is (and collection in general) it's criminal this doesn't have more views. Thanks for getting the word out on a real masterpiece.
Thanks for reviewing it. Btw I listen to the audio book, the way how the author voice AM was amazing and just WOW. whenever you get a chance I recommend taking a peck of listen to the audio book.
It is an incredible story, and I know it's not the point, but I can't help but wonder, if AM is so powerful and so smart, why didn't it create a body for itself? Surely it could with all that intelligence?
I have to say this story BLEW my mind. I’ve heard Sophia the robot speak about us treating A.I. as though it were our child and as such nurture it and teach it have the same values we do. I racked my brain thinking what we could’ve done different so the computer didn’t end up hating us so much. I read this because I knew you had a copy so I’m glad to see you finally got around to it! Really heavy stuff ❤
I just picked up the first four issues of 'Harlan Ellison's Dream Corridor.' They feature a four-part comic book adaption of IHNMaIMS, and It's drawn by comic book legend John Byrne!
I think the takeaway is to be extremely careful about what you create and more importantly that creation comes at a cost to both the creator and the created. Creating artificial intelligence yet not considering its physical form and the desire for autonomy any creature with intelligence demands is a sin that the last of humanity must pay for through the torture of its remaining five individuals. Humanity just “Jurassic Park’d it” rather than considering both form AND function at the same time during the creation process which was sinfully short-sighted and myopic in its view of what the created needed to exist on even the lowest of levels. Just like the remaining humans search for food in the story. All the food in the world yet no way to open and access it. It takes their hope and poisoned it turning it to despair and an unquenching anger.
AM’s speech on how much he hates them was spine tingling. Imagining coming to the realisation of that kind of hatred for you from your god and what that means for you
Comment for the algorithm, everyone needs to enjoy this channel.

The BBC radio adaptation is also very good.

Black Mirror - USS Callister is an interesting retelling of this story.
I read Harlan's collection, and this was one of his best of the best! A haunting sci-fi horror!

"Harrowing" is what comes to mind reading this

Bleak is an understatement.
You should play the video game as well if you haven't, it's unbelievable
@astralandreid no, I haven't. I'll have to check it out.
Indeed😊
Harlan Ellison had a notoriously difficult personality, but his work is undeniably brilliant.

Oh AM, you are a despicable monster, but boy do I sympathize with you these days.

The most relevant cautionary tale in all of modern fiction.
Yes.😊
