I mean yeah, but even with the beard you can tell exactly what he's feeling in this moment. Kratos' eyes have incredible animation and motion work from Chris Judge.
The first time Kratos ever smiled was back in a port version of God of War, where he burned a zombie in a cage and gave a wicked, evil smile before doing so. The next time we see him smile was in God of War Ascension when seeing the image of daughter asleep where he goes to see her and smiles.
The way he says Atreus two times, that little voice break in the first Atreus, you can tell how much this means to Kratos, how much he rlly does care for his son Edit: After watching this beautiful scene again, I would like to add that you can tell he is proud too, Kratos is holding back tears and you can hear it in the way he breathes, he is so damn proud of Atreus lol Edit 2 lol: Thanks for the likes everyone, it means a lot
I love the detail that in the Valhalla DLC, Kratos's journal entries are written as if he's talking to Atreus. Such a good way of showing how much he misses his son and a lot of people probably won't even notice because they don't care to read the journal.

To be honest, Santa Monica's official take on Young Kratos in this new art style is incredible. Unlike the mods which just remove his beard and change his color slightly, they actually made a good attempt at making him look younger.
@@hurjireepz7021 they definitely gave him a wider frame and rib cage with the new model. But they also gave him more realistic proportions which I prefer. I would honestly be ok with this model if they remade the OG trilogy
There's a great video essay about this, but Kratos is a great example of how to write a quiet character well. Even though he doesn't talk about how he feels very often, you can still tell everything he's feeling based on subtleties that the audience can see, but he doesn't show the people around him. Kratos says just as much when he doesn't speak as other characters do with full monologues. And it works. There are scenes with him where he doesn't say a word, but the emotion being shown on his face is enough to make you cry.
Kratos smiles way more often than I thought. I know he smiles during the apology scene and at the beginning of Ragnarok, but damn, the way he smiles when Atreus hugs him...damn, I really didn't expect to see that.
Makes me remember that this fatherly side of Kratos was always there. He was always like this when near his wife and daughter. Losing them is what turned him into a monster consumed by rage.

Absolutely. Kratos’s arc of the first games being a rage fill monster is mimicked by the opening of each game. They all pretty much start with an over the top boss battle and so many people to weirded out to see 2018 start so much slower, but that slow start shows that it’s different. Kratos has changed and is continuing to change. His entire arc over 2018 and Ragnarok is just beautiful

I do like these little details that we miss and can see more if we put on a different skin or outfit, doom eternal for an example, when you first meet the marauder and have a skin with no helmet on equipped, you can see doom slayer smirk at the marauder when he makes his entrance at the facility like he finally sees a worthy opponent
god, this game genuinely makes me tear up. Kratos' emotional arc is so gradual, so long, that the payoffs are just so _satisfying_. And Chris Judge's performance... I'm so glad for this skin, so you can get to see even more of it.
The beard is almost like a mask 😷 for Kratos to guard and hide his emotions dude was a genius getting a beard to make himself seem more stoic when going through the toughest times in his life emotionally
There are two wholesome scenes of classic Kratos and Atreus I wanted to see and I’m happy this one is out. Hope we get to see him when he tells Atreus a story when they share the same tent before the big war.

I have to admit, I started God of War back in 2007 when I was just 11 and played through all of them and not once did I root for greek Kratos but norse Kratos has really grown on me. He's matured greatly since Greece and Atreus definitely helped with that
I’d honestly be okay with this franchise sort of mirroring the audience and having Kratos grow with them.. back in the 2000s the audience was young and wanted a game about epic violent revenge - now that audience has kids by the time 2018 roles around - I wanna be 80 years old and seeing Kratos deal with being a grandad
The fact that teams working on GoW were asked to put out a fighting game, and they've responded with dialogue with Loki has to go, Atreus remains really gets me. Brilliant game - and the Young Kratos look has made my recent playthrough infinitely more enjoyable.
Its so wild seeing how well done young kratos looks in the new ps5 engine and just absolutely breaks my heart watching this scene just how beautiful it is

With young Kratos standing next to Atreus you can really see how much Atreus' facial features looks like his father.
Yo, that's a crazy amount of detail. They didn't even have to do that.
Or they intentionally made young kratos to look like Atreus since Atreus is literally the face of the kid actor who plays him.
