  • ONE MAN'S QUEST TO REVIVE AN ISLAND, A SPORT AND A LEGACY.
It's been more than 35 years since a Merritt last caught a giant bluefin tuna off the coasts of Bimini and Cay Cay. Decades after Allen Merritt won the legendary Cat Cay Tuna Tournament eight times, commercial overharvesting and other factors have all but wiped out the bluefin population in these once teeming waters. Now Roy Merritt Jr. is on a quest to show the world -- and his grandfather -- that sport fishing has a future in Tuna Alley. But catching and releasing one of these 700+ pound elusive beasts won't be easy, and it has nothing to do with their size.

Awesome video and great story! Growing up in south Florida my Dad took me on many fishing trips to Bimini. We used to stay at the Compleat Angler where Hemingway supposedly used to stay. I remember all the old photos, Hemingway's letters, and fishing memorabilia from the heyday that covered the walls of the old hotel and bar. This video reminded me of all the good time we ad there. Thanks Costa!

Other then Tuna consumption much prefer fighting a Marlin, or on light tackle, Sailfish, but the days of Marlin off Bimini appear to have also vanished as the corrupt Bahamian government caved in to developers and with plans to spend 80 million on a new passenger terminal at the South Bimini airfield it will only get worse. Man is his own worst enemy.
