I’m so sorry that Venus has to be culled because of the emotional and financial implications. I continue to have so much respect for the professional and kind way you take care of and grow your herd of goats. You will be in my thoughts and prayers.
Awww I feel for you Crystal, a tough but necessary decision which can't have been easy for you 😢 The fact that you show goats is definitely a big reason to cull this peculiarity out of the herd. It was weird watching how she was wanting so much of your attention during the shooting of video, almost like she knew and was trying to tell you she still loves you no matter what.... So much respect and love for you ❤️. Now I am going to rewind video and watch the madness that is goats frolicking and having fun... Priceless 😂🤣
Awe crystal I know your heart is shattered. I wish all the people who think it’s ok to live as a pet understood half of what you do. You are a blessing to Venus.
Don't beat yourself up too badly. I bought a doeling from a reputable breeder, brought her to the farm at 10 weeks of age. I know they checked her and I did as well after she got here. About 6 months later I was shaving her for a show...she had a fishtail teat! 😭😭😭 After talking with several of my goat friends they all said the same had happened and they found it later (usually when shaving). It makes me think it takes some time to develop? Just a thought. I am so sorry...it is truly a blow.
Harder to see on a newborn because they are small. It becomes more obvious when they grow. In 8 years of breeding I have only seen this once. No one in her lineage had an extra teat. It was more likely caused by nutritional imbalance. In contrast, my unregistered matriarch had an extra teat. She has several litters of strong, healthy goats, none had an extra teat, split teat or any defects at all. Four more generations were born from her line and none of them have teat defects. I canceled her sale and kept her as a non productive goat. Ironically, the first and only kid to pop out with an extra teat was a registered kid from coveted dairy lines and not related to my unregistered doe who had the extra teat which did not pass to any of her progeny.

You’re making the responsible decision as breeder. As heartbreaking as it is. 😢 I had a similar experience with a gorgeous blue eyed Nigerian buck I’d purchased this summer. I completely forgot to check the teats at the time of purchase but as soon as I got him home I checked him over and sure enough he had four. It was so disappointing since I had planned to use him for breeding this fall. He went to a pet only home as a wether. It sucks there’s no safe way for a doe to be sterilized, she’s such a beautiful girl.
Melody Crawford Does can’t be spayed unfortunately, goats have trouble metabolizing the sedation. And it’s a very invasive procedure with a really painful recovery period. 😕 There’s a high chance she’d die from it.
Annalie Smit I have never heard of that being done with goats so I can’t give much input on that. Putting chemicals of any kind in an animal’s body always carries risks, even routine vaccinations can cause life threatening reactions on occasion. I would assume that it’s a costly process too, not something most people would be able to afford for a pet animal. If they did sell her as a pet they’d have to trust the buyer not to try breeding her despite what they’ve been told and sadly most people would still try everything to get her bred.

Thank you for not just showing the sweet and fluffy side of ranching. Culling is a sad part of life, and im sorry you have to make that decision. I love your channel. I was also blown away when you said 90 degrees was cooler. Wowza. I'll never complain about Ohio weather again!
If only we could change things by beating ourselves up! We’d all be black and blue. I’m not a religious person; however, the theme in the Serenity Prayer has been helpful to me.....to accept the things we cannot change, to change the things we can, and the hope and the prayer to have the wisdom to know the difference.
My father who went to hid grave in 1966, taught me that when I was a little girl. I learned since then that only God can change things. Believe in His blood sacrifice , the cross, for all of us because He loved us. He went to the cross as a human, not God. Then He was burried. He rose the third day. 1st Cor 15: 3 and 4. The Holy Spirit ID' you with all of this when you believed and now your salvation is forever, eternal in the heavens. Living and ruling among the stars with Christ Jesus.
I Kno it's late I did have a doe born and she has two extra teats or fishtail teat. It's really common in meat goats as it's not used for milk and most farmers dont look.
Years ago we had a ADGA GCH doe 3*** star milker [dif. breed]. we purchased her from another breeder [who failed to tell us she had a multiple teated offspring previously]. TOTAL devastation when that trait breeds through!!! Her fabulous confirmation and milk production and great genetics was all trashed. We found offspring and siblings w/o visibly showing the teat defect still tended to throw it down the line. We sooooo feel your pain!!! Be very vigilant in watching offspring of remaining siblings. I wish this had never happened, but you are taking a strong stand. Wishing you the best.
Crystal, I'm so sorry about Venus. My heart broke as I hear the devastation in your voice. Venus will still have very important purpose just as the wethers do. Thank you for sharin', I appreciate it. :)
Lodi looked so happy to have some girls her size! (And smaller) It really sucks about Venus but honestly I'm so glad this wasn't about Dreamer, who can't be replaced.
I absolutely love this family and their commitment to their herd. I especially like Crystal, her honesty and ability to sgare her knowledge amazes me. I've never been a goat fan until I found their site. Can't wait to see what is coming in the future with the milking machine.
Just seeing the video and could hear it in your voice how devastated you were. Thank you for being up front and honest about it and as usual I learned more about goat breeding and how to be responsible breeder. Sending hugs from Dakota and me.
Hey Crystal and family! Great video, it's always nice to see you guys, and know that you are well. I appreciate your honestly, when it comes to the good, bad, and the ugly, of farm life. Hugs ❤️ ❤️🌵☀️⛈️🌈
I can tell in your voice, you are heart broken. So sorry this happened! Don't be so hard on yourself. You are human. We all make mistakes. I always wanted goats, but I am old and live my dream through you.
I love watching the goats in the field playing. I have a half-grown kitten who joins me watching! I am so sorry about your sweet girl. I am a crier, I think you are too. I am sending love for you and Venus!
Great video Crystal, so sorry for the news but totally get it, Emily and Darren are growing up fast, I think it would be a good idea to update the family picture including your granddaughter, you all work so hard, credit to you all ☺
Made me cry watching you explain about Venus. Your raw emotion was tough to watch. The hard decisions stink, but is needed for the future generations. Hugs to you guys 💕
So sorry about sweet Venus. She was well loved by many but most importantly by you. Sometimes being responsible sucks, but it’s admirable that you would make such a tough decision out of love and pride for your Hurd.
Despite having to cull Venus, this was such cute video. I love watching them run and jump around! But, thank you for being honest, and up front with your viewers. You, and only you know your herd, and what's best for them. It may be a difficult decision, but know, it's the right decision. Your goats do live a wonderful awesome life!!
U guys should set up a petting carrel type situation For people to come out by appointment of coarse And pay to spend time with the herd out in the pasture I would gladly pay $150 to meet all the beautiful doe's and Im sure many many many others would do the same after this epidemic thing passes of coarse! That could be a way to earn some money for future projects and what-not
Oh no that's sad news, I'm really sorry to hear that Crystal. Glad the doelings are part of the main herd now though, a little less work for all of you!
it’s a goat it’s either meant for dairy or meat nothing wrong with culling as so long as the meat is utilized most normal people eat meat I raise goats and if I want to kill and eat one that’s my choice just as this one is hers.. ps it always cracks me up when I see people say that they are unsubscribing like anyone gives a shit lol it’s like oh I am taking my business elsewhere like your 10 cent view is going to affect them in anyway
I understand that definitely sometimes you need to cull. But could she have been spayed and sold as a pet? That way she can't pass on those genetics etc. As a future goat owner/breeder I would find that info valuable.
Hey Crystal sorry about Venus that sucks. I just now got to watch you I've been away because my baby got a tummy bug and then Colorado got a blizzard and then I lost some livestock thanks to that blizzard. And my baby's fixing to turn one. Things have been crazy in Colorado to say the least. Hopefully everything else yall have planned will go smoothly. Going to get a well here soon and maybe some emu's we will see lol. Thanks for always sharing everything with us and showing how to deal with even the hard times. ❤💯
You don't have to cull those with extra teats. I thought I would have to take two of my does out mating, but with very little work I have been able to milk them with the Simple Pulse milking machine. You learn how to do it, and requires guiding the teats more into the inflation, but once lock on it is not difficult.
You should not be breeding animals that have defects. These are dairy goats and they need to have an udder that is functional. Numerary teats can cause multiple issues for the animal, their kids, and a buyer. Even if your does with extra teats have kids that don't, they may carry the gene. Then you sell a goat that carries the gene just for another family to find out after investing a lot of time and money into them. If more people were responsible breeders and stopped breeding animals like this, the issue wouldn't be so bad.
Hello how are you doing. I’m really sorry to hear about that. it’s very tough making decisions on the farm. its probably one of my toughest things to do. At the end of the day you have to think about what’s best for your herd. That’s something you definitely don’t want to inherit as time goes by. Thank you for sharing take care and God bless♥️
Poor Venus. Cant you keep her as a pet? Has it been raining? You are in my thoughts and prayers. Thank you for sending us your videos. I appreciate your dedication
By sharing about the cull you are helping the next person to understand. I emphasize with your heartache 💔. There is a purpose this has gone on this far. You may not be able to see the ripple in the pond. Thank you for having the courage to share.
Crystal, knowing how much you love your goats and care about improving the breed, I am sure your decision was a difficult one to make. Thank you for sharing all parts of Blue Cactus life, good and difficult times💙
I am so sorry to hear about Venus. As responsible goat lovers we sometimes have to make very hard decisions. I have learned so much from your channel and hope if needed I can make those hard decisions. Prayers to you and your family. Thank you for sharing your journey.
Heartbreaking to have to euthanase , but like you said, you cant risk breeding that on.... I am a new follower, a goat lover, and just Love your videos.. AND, your goats are as spoilt as mine. Mine have access to my house when I’m home, they’ll come in and chill out and sleep on the Lino floor, or run up and down the hallway, then outside they head. They are the funniest pets to have, and loving... Keep doing what you’re doing and I’ll be looking for all your new vids... ❤️❤️
I was wondering the same. Crystal worked so hard to save Venus. Can she just be a companion goat to the herd? I know it is not cost effective, but she could hang out with the retired ladies. 💙
Why would a farm keep a doe that will require feed, medication, maintenance, and care when all that should go for a productive animal. She would go through repeated heat cycles - not good for the animal, not easy to manage overall. This is a working farm. If it's not creating revenue, it's COSTING. Not good business practice, not sound herd management.
Sad to say but I agree with oceanswimmer it’s hard to understand and some people can’t understand. In the long run it can prevent suffering and prevent this from happening again.
Sadly, OceanSwimmer is right. Financially speaking, keeping a farm animal as a ‘pet’ because of emotion is unwise. There’s a video from earlier this year explaining the reasoning behind weathers and why they don’t just let them roam and whatnot. Especially in a time where good meat is expensive and knowing it’s origins is very important.
Crystal im so sorry about Venus. Im heartbroken for you and could hear the sadness in your voice too. Don't beat yourself up for not noticing sooner. Like you said you were focused on keeping her alive. Hang in there.
That sucks, I am so sorry Crystal. She is so beautiful. As young as she is will you have to get her spayed or can you giver her that shot that keeps them from going into heat?
Had to chuckle when you said your temperature was dropping into the 90's. For us that'd be incredibly hot. During that freak cold snap the other day, our temperature dropped to about 23°F at night and about 36-40°F during the day with 6 inches of snow! (were in Colorado). Hottest temperature we ever see is 80-85°F in the middle of summer.
Thank you!! Apparently not tho and because she breeds SHOW goats I'm sure in her mind she's only thinking of improving the line.. This is sad and totally unnecessary! A life is NOT DISPOSABLE! Period!!
Instead of culling her you could put her with the weather's and grow her for meat with them and they cant get her pregnant. At least then she isnt just killed for nothing. But everyone does what's right for their sitiation.
@@goatsilove6808 I think a sanctuary would be a great course of action to consider. No chance she'd be bred because sanctuaries are really big on castrating/spaying, they never sell animals, and a lot of them are vegan-run, and while i dont agree with the "preaching" of being vegan, the animals in their care live great lives. Twist of fate sanctuary is one i follow on instagram, they dont preach about anything far as ive seen, but they would take Miss Venus in a heartbeat I'd bet, they always seem to be begging to take on cull animals
I can't imagine how painful it is for you guys when you have to make decisions like not breading Venus. You goats are your baby's and that is extremely evident in all your videos. Thank you for not just showing the sweet and fluffy side of ranching. Culling is a sad part of life, and im sorry you have to make that decision. I love your channel. I was also blown away when you said 90 degrees was cooler. Wowza. I'll never complain about Ohio weather again!
Culling as in killing/harvesting etc?
Love my Simple Pulse milking machine! Been using mine for almost 2 years. Great decision.
Shes so sweet, I hope she gets to just live out her life and be a buddy to someone. :( I'm so sorry
Thanks for explaining why you do things. Bless you & your family. Your poochie is having a great snooze
Crystal, I'm so sorry about Venus. My heart broke as I hear the devastation in your voice. Venus will still have very important purpose just as the wethers do. Thank you for sharin', I appreciate it. :)
I would have be taking Venus in as for a pet and companion with my other animals.
Could you keep Venus as a companion for the retired dose?
The retired does stay with the herd so a companion isn’t needed :)
I can’t wait to see Lodi’s babies this coming year!😍
That's so sad. I hate that y'all are going through this...bigs hugs!
So sorry you’re going through this. Such a hard but responsible choice that I fully respect.
Lodi looked so happy to have some girls her size! (And smaller)
It really sucks about Venus but honestly I'm so glad this wasn't about Dreamer, who can't be replaced.
Your first 3:20 is why I watch your channel! Its like having an experienced goat neighbor!!!
I bet when maybelline gets bigger she’s not gonna take anything from anyone!! She’s one tough cookie!!! 😂💙🐐
⁰
Hey Crystal and family!
Great video, it's always nice to see you guys, and know that you are well.
I appreciate your honestly, when it comes to the good, bad, and the ugly, of farm life.
Hugs ❤️
❤️🌵☀️⛈️🌈
Oh, breaks my heart to hear about Vénus! She is such a sweet baby! You can’t give her to someone
I can tell in your voice, you are heart broken. So sorry this happened! Don't be so hard on yourself. You are human. We all make mistakes. I always wanted goats, but I am old and live my dream through you.
I am amazed at how the goats just jump right on up to get milked simply amazing
I love watching the goats in the field playing. I have a half-grown kitten who joins me watching! I am so sorry about your sweet girl. I am a crier, I think you are too. I am sending love for you and Venus!
Great video Crystal, so sorry for the news but totally get it, Emily and Darren are growing up fast, I think it would be a good idea to update the family picture including your granddaughter, you all work so hard, credit to you all ☺
It’s beautiful now. I walked outside and it was70 and my body responded with a shiver and a thought. I need a sweater! Lol. Lol
I just LOVE seeing herd out on pasture. Watching them run and play makes the heart happy.
Just like chickens. There is always a pecking order.
Made me cry watching you explain about Venus. Your raw emotion was tough to watch. The hard decisions stink, but is needed for the future generations. Hugs to you guys 💕
Aww!! They all really love you Crystal!!You are so great with them! They all love you!
That could be a way to earn some money for future projects and what-not
I would go on a trip from europe to usa just to see the herd😂
The cost of insurance coverage would cost more than they could make.
Oh no that's sad news, I'm really sorry to hear that Crystal. Glad the doelings are part of the main herd now though, a little less work for all of you!
Boy your babies sure love you
it’s a goat it’s either meant for dairy or meat nothing wrong with culling as so long as the meat is utilized most normal people eat meat I raise goats and if I want to kill and eat one that’s my choice just as this one is hers.. ps it always cracks me up when I see people say that they are unsubscribing like anyone gives a shit lol it’s like oh I am taking my business elsewhere like your 10 cent view is going to affect them in anyway
I am sorry..I can hear the pain in your voice..hugs..ive learned so much from your videos and am planning on getting a few goats..
By sharing about the cull you are helping the next person to understand. I emphasize with your heartache 💔. There is a purpose this has gone on this far. You may not be able to see the ripple in the pond. Thank you for having the courage to share.
You said it. Extra teats should be a cull in any breed of goat IMO. Way to go and I'm with you!
Crystal, knowing how much you love your goats and care about improving the breed, I am sure your decision was a difficult one to make. Thank you for sharing all parts of Blue Cactus life, good and difficult times💙
Awhhhh cassie is soooooooo SWEET.... such a SWEETY PIE!😘🌿🌿🌿🌻🍃🍃🍃
So sorry to hear about little Venus. Can you keep her & just never breed her? She is so sweet & you worked so hard with her.
S Stirling I feel the same ! With her having a rough start out as a baby being a preemie and all. I hope they can keep her as a pet.
Oh no. I am so sorry, Thank you for sharring. I went out and double checked mine.
Please don't kill Venus she is so cutie and beautiful doe . Keep her as a companion for Lacy .
Crystal im so sorry about Venus. Im heartbroken for you and could hear the sadness in your voice too. Don't beat yourself up for not noticing sooner. Like you said you were focused on keeping her alive. Hang in there.
Look at your beautiful heard you all did that congratulations they are spectacular. I'm really sorry about venus.
Aw so sorry you have to make that tough decision 😢 They're so cute bouncing around out in the field altogether!
The one that has the more white has a heart on her right hip.
Is it not possible to make an exception for Venus? There are people that would keep her as a pet only or a sanctuary........
You can hear in your voice that your heartbroken. So sorry to hear you had to cull her.
You my Dear are THE GOAT WHISPER... FOR SURE... 🐐🐐🐽🐂🌹🌹🌹
It does suck, but you’re making the right (and very hard!) decision.
That sucks, I am so sorry Crystal. She is so beautiful. As young as she is will you have to get her spayed or can you giver her that shot that keeps them from going into heat?
can't spay Goats its to expensive and its to dangerous they could die anyway under the anesthetic
@@donnastarpaw thank you
Awww...that's gotta be tough...but necessary. She was well loved.
Have you guys thought about sanctuaries for doelings like venus?
Thank you!! Apparently not tho and because she breeds SHOW goats I'm sure in her mind she's only thinking of improving the line.. This is sad and totally unnecessary! A life is NOT DISPOSABLE! Period!!
I don't know why but it's just crazy to me that they know their names and they listen and do what theyre told better then my dog lol
Instead of culling her you could put her with the weather's and grow her for meat with them and they cant get her pregnant.
At least then she isnt just killed for nothing. But everyone does what's right for their sitiation.
She will be eaten. Its just the sadness of killing such a nice Doeling. Hate udder deformities.. :(
@@goatsilove6808 I think a sanctuary would be a great course of action to consider.
I have no doubt Venus is going to live the remainder of her life living a life filled with love. You do what you need to do and ignore anyone that questions your intentions. Hugs little Venus.💜
You should look up what culling means. :/
@@katmaloney493 it means removing. Removing from the breeding program. Not endive kills their culls.
Genetics are amazing at how you get the odd crop out. We had to cull our first registered ewe lamb this year. She will not breed.☹️ Your ethics are awesome. Thank you.
Can Venus go to a sanctuary, if there's one near you? She's precious!
That’s so sad about Venus. I would totally take her and never breed her but I’m in Australia. 🙁 but I am sure that you guys know what’s best. You are really responsible Crystal! You’re so strong!
They all love you so much it’s so precious💕
I am so sorry about venus she is such a beautiful sweet baby. U know best on what to do. RIP sweet girl. 🙏💔😥
How are you drying up the does? Are you just stopping cold turkey?
Watch "How to dry up your goat so they stop producing milk" published September 3rd 2019
@@Victoria-qm8lf I've seen the video, but to my understanding they aren't doing that this time. Thanks for that though😉
I totally understand your decision about Venus and I’m sorry. :( It does suck but you are awesome for being a responsible breeder. The right decision isn’t always an easy one with raising animals thats for sure.
I love 💕 your videos thanks for sharing
I just recently started watching your videos. I am not a goat farmer I know absolutely nothing about goats however I have learned quite a bit from you. My sister has a farm and raises goats and I have passed your videos on to her. I'm amazed at how much work goes into maintaining your farm and your herd. Do you also work outside of the home and are your kids homeschooled. They seem to enjoy the farm as well I hope that you will continue to show videos as your herd progresses and as you learn everyday new things about your heard. I scan UA-cam every day to see if there's a new video out I will continue to watch and pass on your videos so that my friends and family will see what farming life is like. I wish you well for the new year that is exciting breeding season
22:00 the baby goat looks like shes standing on the dog
Keep it up great work
