Welcome to the Blue Cactus Dairy Goat Ranch! We breed show quality Nigerian Dwarf Goats! We currently have a herd of 22 does and 4 bucks. Our herd is rotationally grazed on our 10 1/2 acre homestead in Arizona. We make cheese and soap from the milk we get and we also raise chickens for eggs and meat and keep a large garden year round!

My does had their kids (finally)!! Magpie had a beautiful buck and doe, and Selene had twin does. I loved the pregnancies and watching them get round and such, but it's great when its over. Now we have four adorable babies!! Congrats on your sweet ones so far, and may everyone else have smooth kiddings and healthy kids!!

Love the babies so adorable 😍🥰. y'all are working so hard and it shows. I have been busy with our farm too so I missed your labor videos because of kids here lol. I am very impressed with the goats that y'all got they have come a long way since you brought them home great work Derek 👏👏👏. And one little thing another reason to separate is that sometimes the doe gets out and wonders off the kid follows and in my case never came home with the doe. A day and two nights later we got so lucky our neighbors dog brought him home to them and we got him back. I usually separate day 2 but I didn't with this one fast enough 🤦. Great work everyone it is looking wonderful there.

Becky is doing great!! Your family is all about the TLC to tame down the wild ones as well as the herd to make sure she stays in line..;-) hopefully soon she will be like Val, integrated with the main gals soon. I'm going to have a small homestead someday & after doing some research, I decided on having a few Nigerians because they don't give as much milk as a standard size goat. But I can't wait until I have my own homestead.

Why do you separate the babies from the mamas so soon. Seems like more work for your family.
The longer you wait to separate the harder it is for the doe and the kid. Also because they milk their goats they produce more when you draining them of milk body makes more
The babies get a full two days to consume as much colostrum and milk as possible. The colostrum is vital for their immune defense.
After two days, the does produce mostly milk; there is no physical deprivation at all be cause the babies are fed by bottle.
For the does, milking by hand ensures that their udder is COMPLETELY EMPTY, which is healthier for them. Incomplete emptying can lead to mastitis.
Separating at two days is easier when you have SO MANY does, plus, the babies play together & are too distracted to miss mama.
You can see how content and happy the kids are: if separated at 3 or 4 weeks, the does and kids scream and get very upset over the separation.
Imagine a whole herd of screaming animals -- not easy for anyone.
Crystal did a video on why they separate at two days & her reasons make a LOT of sense!
