It would be interesting to have a discussion about the different lifestyles of the elite and non-elite classes of NK. Another interview where they talk about how the classes interacted, and how their status affected their modes of escape would be fascinating!
I mean... it's not that shocking, just look into your country, there is always classes in every society, the rich vs the poor, the ruler vs the slave, the smart vs the idiot, the pretty vs the ugly, the strong vs the weak, and so on.
I know right. I was also thinking what if Captain Ri was just a low ranked soldier and without a father with a powerful position. But then in reality, even if they were elites this love story would have been so impossible. For as long as Captain Ri remains as a North Korean, he can't marry a South Korean. And from what I know, there are over 2Million NK soldiers on the DMZ. It was so unrealistic that Seri crossed the border that easily.
I've been insterested in North korea after the drama. And everything completely amaze me. The NK people are different but it is not that as such people think. I mean, they doesnt seem like the stereotypes I heard before. From this video and the previous ones just gave me many explanations about how they actually live. If there are any videos about NK to be uploaded in the future, I can't wait any longer! Thank you so much!
It can be pretty terrible. Read "a river in darkness." Its a memoir from someone that moved from Japan to NK in the 60's when he was like 12. And then spent 30 years there before defecting back to Japan. Its pretty dang depressing. The show doesn't really give justice to how hard it is for some people. Then again he went through the great famine. A lot of the newer generation didn't go through the famine of the early 90s.

I lived in China before and met North Koreans, it is actually not too rare to meet them if you are in any sort of university setting. I talked to them sometimes. I do remember they liked the American movie "Titanic", when I told them the movie was 10 years old (at that time it was about the year 2009) they seemed surprised to hear that lol
Many Koreans don't want that anymore. The 2 countries are too different now in governance and economically. The South does not want to have to financially support the North under a reunification.
@@bdon77 No wonder..korean want to be one country so that make a bigger economic..if Samsung & Hyundai motor etc step into N.K"s labor & could use resource, Unified korea will be stronger than ever.
This is possible for the only barrier on the unification are mainly the economic factors that can be solved but most of the barrier is if the United States can maintain a grip on the Korean Peninsula or not. China, as the ideological "Big Brother" of the North, actually wants it to reunify with South. As long as there will be no US military influence on the North. We all know that South is a US ally so it will be hard to arrive at a compromise
@@Ivan-bg1jp You can view it from the other way around too though. If it were not for China propping up the DPRK with financial support and economic trade, the DPRK probably would have collapsed by now. China wants the DPRK to remain because there are US soldiers in the ROK and they don't want US soldiers on their border. It's hard to imagine how to fix this problem. If the two sides really did unify, then South Korea would be flooded with an underclass of workers willing to work for very low wages. It would hurt the middle and lower class of South Korea. There are only a tiny number of defectors right now and even still it's hard for them to integrate into South Korea. Imagine millions of them. Plus, the taxes in South Korea would have to go crazy high for South Korea's government to be able to get the North back up to speed. Forget even stuff like internet. Basic infrastructure like paved roads everywhere would take a ton of resources. South Korea has a national healthcare system, imagine trying to integrate North Koreans into that, all the work that would be needed to get North Korean hospitals up to South Korean code. I just wanna know if there was a way that Jeong Hyeok and Seri could’ve dated without having to risk their lives or only meet a few times a year. Realistically, could he as a NK citizen date her, a SK citizen, in a simpler and more smooth way than risking lives or only meeting once a year? I thought he would get his scholarship back and study in Switzerland again and they could date, and eventually when his parents pass away he can defect.
Finally! I've been meaning to have this conversation with someone who gets it cause I've been thinking about this for so many nights! Hahaha! From what I see, I think the problem here is that they are politically and legally prohibited from interacting with each other at all costs, let alone falling in love given the mere fact that Ri Jeong Hyeok is North Korean and Seri a South Korean. The only good thing in this is that both Koreas cannot interfere with their relationship as long as they're in Switzerland since Switzerland doesn't participate in international conflicts. This also shows how Switzerland plays a keyrole in this drama to make this work. However, as ideal as it sounds, they can't stay together in Switzerland for good since they have their respectives lives to go back to, and not just any lives but ones that speak volumes of who they are. In Ri Jeong Hyeok's case, defecting is out of the question because of his parents' life and reputation which he feels the need to protect more than ever after the loss of his brother. It'll be convenient for the writers to just let his parents pass away but I think what's important here is Ri Jeong Hyeok's character in the story. He loves fiercely without compromising his principles, that's who he is. So to abandon it for love will be to abandon his entire belief system that started his love story in the first place, which is why he can't just defect and the writers can't just conveniently let his parents pass away. Meanwhile in Seri's case, not only does she have a company to run and a reconciled family to make up lost time with, but a life that Ri Jeong Hyeok fixed-- food in the fridge, new friends, a hobby, a plant, just simple joys in life that helped her live and be her best self. It'll be out of character for her to leave it all and out of character for Ri Jeong Hyeok to take her away from it so I don't think it would've made a good ending had they stayed together in Switzerland for good. They can't stay together in either Koreas for political reasons and they can't forever stay in Switzerland for moral reasons which makes the two-weeks a year crucial to let them see each other. Though honestly, I would've been so much happier if it were at least 2 months but either way, I don't think there really is a way around their situation given that they're still North and South Korean at the end of the day. As a somewhat consolation, I heard that the series originally had a wedding in the finale but eventually had to do away with it after North Korea reacted against the idea of a government being too lenient on this.
