      Also a case of the show surpassing the book by a long shot, I still haven't finished reading it.

    • @petarbuglov8532
      @petarbuglov8532 7 місяців тому

      @@jenn9027I'm not so sure about the show surpassing the book. The show is really good but it doesn't really do the book justice if you compare them. The show and the book have very opposite themes where the show's main point is that familial love can overcome anything, whereas the book explores how traumatized and disfunctional toxic familial relationships can leave you.
      The entire haunting in the book only makes sense if you view it through the lens of Nell's character and that's why it overwhelms her so much. The other characters are creeped out and confused but she is the one that gets hit the hardest. Theodora also gets pretty overwhelmed at moments but that is because of her vaguely described sensitivity in my opinion.
      The show also totally changes the purpose of Nell's character where in the book she is the lead, and the one you view the story through, while in the show because she dies in episode 1 she really is robbed of the spotlight, which is a shame because she's a much more interesting character than Steve and Shirley who don't appear in the book, but get more screen time than her.
      I really hope you finish the book because the puzzle pieces really fit together once you have read it all.
      Hill house is a good show, but there is a reason the book is held in such high regard.

    • @jenn9027
      @jenn9027 7 місяців тому

      @@petarbuglov8532I'm definitely going to read it, I only got to the first night in the book, I just liked the show a lot. I know they showcase different themes, I just happen to have really liked the family aspect of the show and what each character represents in grief. And even though she died, I think that made it hit harder, you feel even more sorry for her, and the fact that she was seeing her death over and over was a sucker punch. I really don't think many people like Steve and Shirley, but you understand how messed up they are. I'll make another determination when I've finished the book, just from what I've read vs the show, I prefer the show, my opinion. And I've found quite a few people that saw the show first prefer it. Didn't even say it was a bad book, geez, people can't even have different preferences without this kind of reaction.

    24:36 In my culture, it's actually considered disrespectful to pass that responsibility to someone else. We handle our own when they pass on and we hold their repass. But we also have a pretty open and healthy relationship with death, it's not something that's generally viewed as scary or unsettling.

      So true, death is apart of life. The unknown is exciting & frightening.

    • @lisabeloved

      That's so beautiful, thank you for sharing! I truly think it's a major flaw or drawback in our western/American culture to avoid and fear death and loss so much.
      To view tending to our loved ones after death and treat it as a continued act of care and love is such a valuable thing for our souls as humans ❤

    • @diamcole
      @diamcole 10 місяців тому +8

      @@memitaylor4323 Generally - we tend to view all of it the same since death comes for us all. If there's a sudden, violent, or unexpected death, there are specific rituals to perform to settle any lingering energy but it's rare to hear anyone get too caught up in trying to directly point out what could be viewed as evil or mentally ill elements like other cultures might. No one calls it scary but they don't refer to it as beautiful either, it just "is" and regardless, it's our duty to honor them by seeing them off so we do.

      @@lisabeloved Thank you for this! I was honestly hoping not to turn off too many people with this comment, I know different cultures have different relationships with death and loss. There is something incredibly intimate about tending to those you care about after they've passed and preparing their bodies for burial. I'm sure it would be too much for a lot of people but having grown up with it, I deeply appreciate the practice.

    Personal theory on how the memory of the kittens relates to her seeing the beetle in Nel's mouth: because she's fixated on "fixing" the image of death, the beetle represents how even though she can fix the way death looks and gain some sense of control that way, she still can't fix or control what death really is.
    It's the flaw or limitation of her coping mechanism showing up to haunt her

    • @eva1585
      @eva1585 2 місяці тому

      True, I also wonder if another connection is that she couldnt "save" the kitten and now she feels she couldnt "save" Nell/keep her safe? But as the guys said, she didnt do anything wrong. She declined Nell's call cause she was in an important meeting. If she knew what Nell was going through there's no doubt she would've answered.

    Just like Blake, I have never been a huge fan of horror. I had heard good things about this show but I couldn't get myself past the 1st episode. It literally took me nearly a year to come back to it and give it a chance. And boy was it the best TV decision I ever made. This show is TOP TIER and easily in the upper 5% of shows I have ever seen, and I have seen A LOT. It has jumps scares, for sure, but it does not rely on jump scares to be good. Amazing cast, top notch directing and editing, and a beautifully touching story about a family, set in the horror genre. I will never grow tired of praising this piece of art. And I have not judged a book by its cover since.

    It's funny that the guys keep wondering what's in the red room since Ep 1 already showed what's in the red room. BTW Corey, when young Steven was being carried out of the room by his dad, he did open his eyes briefly. I didn't realize that the light on dead mom's face was a callback to the sunhat scene at the kitten funeral. Just like GOT, I keep discovering new things every time I watch this.

    My husband worked in a mortuary. Most are family run, and would never think of allowing another mortuary to care for one of their own. The idea that they would do Nell, is crazy, yes. But these people care for families dealing with death, they’re on a different level with death than most. They definitely would do Nell.

    In my opinion, episode 3 is where it really starts to get good and is also one of my favorite episodes 😊
    And on a random note, I saw another commenter say that the organs were kept in a bag for organ donation. Not true. Those organs would not have been used. When organs are healthy enough for donation, there is a certain process it takes to preserve them until the transplanting happens.
    After an organ is surgically harvested, it is typically placed into cold storage until it can be transplanted into a host. Or a warm perfusion machine which keeps certain organs, such as the heart, alive using an artificial circulatory system until they can be transplanted.
    I know this because I am literally an organ transplant recipient. An organ donor saved my life :)❤

    Most of the times, when you're watching this show, it's not the show that scares you. It's you scaring yourself. Bc you expect some scary jump scare to happen, but then it didn't. So you just keep expecting. Like when you said this Ep2 was scary, but then if you think about what was the scariest moment in this episode, you can't really think of one. It's just that the show's very atmospheric.

I think maybe the problem is that you're anticipating the worst so you're getting anxious and freaking out before anything even happens, even though 75% of it isn't even scary. You’re overthinking and trying to find symbolisms. Yes, they are there but they actually hit you over the head with them. They are hard to miss. The bug coming out of the cat was Shirley’s first experience with death. The bug coming out of Nell was Shirley remembering her first experience and how it is like her first experience with the death of a sibling. That’s all.
    YEA to whoever caught the mom’s hair! It wasn’t gravity. It was a spirit. Watch it again and see how the hair is being played with. But there were so many more ghosts you missed. It’s understandable because of the way they are framed or half hidden… or just shadow. There’s one that reminds me of the video footage of Bigfoot! 🤣
    Yes, at a real autopsy, the first thing they do is pull all of your internal organs out and put them in a plastic bag. When they have finished their examination and find cause of death, they put the bag back into the chest cavity. They didn’t show everything. You saw Shirl sewing Nell’s hair back onto her scalp. What they didn’t show is they scalp you, cut open your cranium and take a brain sample. Then the mortician stitches the hair back in place. Seriously, you should watch the film “The Autopsy of Jane Doe”. It’s is one of my favorite films and it has a really big twist at the end.
    The Actress who plays older Shirl is in the Mike Flanagan film “Ouija: Origins of Evil”. Her youngest daughter is that film is Lulu Wilson, the one playing young Shirl. It also has Henry Thomas. The prequel is better than the original, “Ouija”. Lulu was also in “Annabelle: Creation”. She’s being known as that spooky little girl. Hey! money is money, right?!
    Oh, and also Flanagan’s wife (The one playing adult Theo,) is in those films too. Y’all should do more than one reaction of this per week. It makes it a long week, waiting on your reactions!

    Brussels Sprouts back in the time when they (the Hill House characters) were kids used to be a lot more bitter. No really. The reason that everyone grew up hating brussels sprouts in the 70s and earlier was because the old crops were much more intensely bitter. They were very much an acquired taste and you had to fight them down. No amount of searing or breadcrumbs could help that taste, and the 1970s were much more likely to boil them in an attempt to get most of the flavor out. So they were horrid things. They really were.
    But in the decades since, the Brussels Sprouts farmers of the world have been carefully pulling a modern day Mendel and breeding commercial strains with less and less bitterness in them, until they ended up with the actually pleasant Brussels Sprouts of today. They have no bitterness to them at all any more, and so folks raised as kids hating them have all started as adults in midlife and later now begun to rediscover them. And the younger generations who never tasted the original Brussels Sprouts are eating the modern variety of them and thinking, "What gives? These are awesome! How could my parents hate them growing up?"
    And that's why. You're not eating the same variety or flavors associated with Brussels Sprouts precisely because so many people hated the vegetable that the global vegetable consortium agreed to genetically shift to a brand new variety which didn't taste like boiled used hockey gear after a practice.

      From someone that has eaten Brussels Sprouts back in the 80s, I can tell you that they've not changed all that much in taste. I mean, that's the real horror of this show, Brussels Sprouts. Ate them last month and they're still as awfully bitter as I remember :( Most of my kids don't like them either. I generally have to season them with other strong flavors to subdue the bitter taste. From all the people I know (school, work, other) I know exactly 8 people who appreciate them. Nobody else does.

      A few years back I came home to my then boyfriend and asked him what was smelling so bad. It couldn't have been the trash because I took it out that morning. Turned out he threw the rest of the Brussel's spoutr int he bint hat he didn't finish, because he knew I wouldn't eat them... they were allegedly not smelling rotten but to mee they definitely did.
      In case you were wondering: I still have no idea why he didn't prepare a single/smaller serving or put the rest into the fridge or anything like that

      "Bitter"??? They're literally just itty bitty cabbages. They taste like cabbage, which not everyone likes, but not particularly bitter. Maybe if your parents hated you and made you eat them raw or something...
      The kids were growing up in the 90s. Maybe the 80s for the older kids. Same as me. I never had a problem with brussel sprouts, even as a sorta picky eater with a massive sweet tooth.

    this is one of the BEST horror shows of recent times. it's a dark, yet beautiful tale about the stages of grief. it's emotional, deep & truly haunting. I sobbed for nell's episode so be ready for the tissues, your mind will be blown. pleaaase please keep an eye out, there are HUNDREDS of hidden background ghosts that I didn't notice until after a couple of rewatches each halloween & they surprise me each time. i adore when reaction channels rewatch because it's like experiencing it for the first time again through other eyes. cannot wait to see y'all react to the funeral, it feels like one hour long continuous shot (mostly).

    I’m new here so I don’t know the name of the guy in white. If you stick around till the end, when you look back you’ll realize it’s not as scary as we think it’s going to be when we go through the story for the first time. The director/creator is just very good at creating that type of suspense that makes you feel uneasy.
    And while there are moments that feel like little jump scares, they are really smattered sparsely throughout the series. There is really only one big major jump scare and you’ll absolutely know when it happens. And you won’t expect it 😉 … or will you???! muah ha ha ha ha 😉

    My overall favorite things that I found while watching this show are all of the subtle figures you can see in the background. Pretty much in every episode there is at least one figure standing in the background, whether it’s blurry, in the shadows, or even in reflections in the windows! I didn’t catch them on my first time watching, but when I later watched it with my siblings, my older sister started pointing them out.

  • @Boredinthebronx

    I think everyone keeps saying “ghosts aren’t real” because for the two oldest Steven and Shirley they didn’t really see ghosts. Steven didn’t see shit and as far as Shirley is concerned everything she saw was just dead things being weird. And for the younger siblings they see saw stuff but they were probably gaslit their entire lives into thinking they didn’t see what they saw
    And you can imagine how that can affect them. No wonder Luke has an addiction issue and no one is really shocked Nelly committed suicide. This whole family is in denial. They just can’t face what happened.
    I love these reactions! Can’t wait till next ep. Hang in there Blake. This show is so worth it.

    As someone who has lost her little sister, I can genuinely say that, if I had that skillset, I would've done that too. In grief, you try and do anything you can as a last act of love you can give to your loved one. I would've given my sister my heart, my brain, my spleen, everything if I could've. For anyone who's lost a sibling, this is one of the best shows that encapsulates the grieving process, family dynamics, stages of grief....its' not exactly the same but I've never seen the themes so well done when it comes to grief.

    I love horror movies and this show is the best horror movie/show/media everything, and that's only partially true because of the horror, but what really carries it over the top is the character development. You get so invested in these characters, it's insane that it's all in a horror show, that's something you expect out of drama, not horror.

    In case you didn't know, finding small cemeteries near country homes is NOT unusual at all. Many people used to bury their loved ones at home. Many still do. Ree Drummond aka The Pioneer Woman on The Food Network, is married to Ladd Drummond. The Drummond family is one of the top 3 land owners in the UNITED STATES. They own a large cattle ranch. Cattle and beef is how they make their money, and they were rich LONG before Ree ever married Ladd. When Ladd's mother died a couple years ago, the family went out to their FAMILY CEMETERY which is located on their property. They cleaned it all up, mowed the lawn, cleaned the headstones, and then buried Ladd's Mom next to their other relatives. It was beautiful.
    My high school BFF, E's dad, C, was a mortician. We went to work with him one day, to his funeral home in El Cerrito, with the plan to take the train into San Francisco to hang out for the day, we must have been 15-16 years old at the time. Since we were going to wait for the 11am train into the city, and we got there at 7am so C could clock in, he told us to go put all 3 of our lunches in the fridge in the 2nd room on the right. Naturally I only half listened being a teenager, so I walked into the room on the right, saw a chest fridge, walked over to it, opened it up, and saw a weird clear but not translucent, plastic tablecloth like thing covering something up. I went to lift it up, and saw toes. I had just tried to put our lunches in the body fridge 😂😂😂. I nodded my head, said "Welp, alright then, clearly not THIS fridge...", turned around and left the room, went back to C and asked him to show me which fridge I could put food in bc the last one I opened had a body in it. he was mortified thinking I was scared or scarred by seeing the dead man. It didn't scare me, I just wasn't expecting it, but since I WAS in a funeral home attached to a massive cemetery, I guess some part of me just accepted I MIGHT see something like that. And no, it wasn't gory.

    • @AllisonM90
      @AllisonM90 10 місяців тому

      @@jenk4545 Yep!! You are also legally entitled to have your loved ones body at home up until their burial. Usually funeral homes have portable refrigeration units they will let you use. The embalming must usually still be done at the funeral home, but you have the right to watch if you so choose to. Through watching Ask A Mortician, I was able to help my bsf when her Mom, my 2nd Mom, died, her and her sister were able to help bathe her, dress her, do her hair and makeup, and spend time with her they otherwise wouldn't have been able to do bc they wouldn't have known to ask. They said the peace it gave them to be able to literally see her ANY TIME gave them immeasurable comfort. I'm just glad I was able to provide that for them, the path to that peace and comfort.
