4Pockets AUM Midi Mixer Walkthrough - Automation Has Finally Arrived in AUM!

- 4Pockets AUM Midi Mixer is very promising plugin that will make it much more interesting to do jams in AUM. Best of all it is universal, so works on iPhones as well as iPads! This is a very quick first look as I have had very limited time with the app, but will teach you all the main features. For sure you will see me using this more in future videos as AUM is my main host.
From the App Store:
MidiMixer is an AUv3 plugin specifically designed for AUM which allows you to control your mix and record automation synced to AUM's timeline. You can control up to 12 AUM channels at once and create up to 8 snapshots of the mixing desk. You can smoothly fade from one snapshot into another at the touch of a button and even record these transitions as part of the automation for your song.
Automation recording is a big part of MidiMixer, and as such can record real-time movement of controls or add them directly to the visual editor. Editor tools allow you to draw automation for each control in real time as your song plays.
MidiMixer ships with a couple of default AUM session templates that will help you quickly configure AUM and MidiMixer ready to create your new song.
MidiMixer works by sending control messages to AUM. It relies on the default settings for AUM which makes setup very quick and easy. By default, you have control over 12 AUM tracks and a single group track for overall volume. You can control AUM's fader, pan, mute and solo settings for each of the 12 channels. We also provide a user option which allows you to send custom data to control other AUM settings (or a piece of MIDI equipment of your choice).
Features:
• 8 mixer snapshots with smooth fade over 0-5s.
• Record real-time control changes.
• Graphical editor with editing tools.
• Clipboard functionality for copying sections of automation.
• 2 default AUM templates provided.
• Fader lock allowing control of all faders at once.
• Control up to 12 AUM channels.
• Load and Save mixes.
• Full song state saving.

Paul is close to world domination with the creation of this fantastic app... I even negotiated an advance on my pocket money and purchased it straight away . The array of functionality is superb and personally speaking it is going to really speed up my work flow. I use some generative apps and also midi performances recorded in Xe2 , synced to the AUM clock....so lots of app switching ...until now. Level control, pan and really compressive controller envelopes now is totally possible with AUM . 🎩🦄 .
I’m an instant fan of the snapshot facility and with Gavers on the comment that the timer function could be improved by creating the ability to extend the time each cycle takes. Also.. the comment about fader manipulation being a little tricky to operate manual could be remedied having some form of pop up long reach fader.....probably weeks of coding there 👍😬
The one ring that would bind them all would be the release of ..at some point..of an AU3 midi sequencer capable of at least recording live performances and step sequencing....there currently isn’t one worth its salt in my opinion. If Paul or some other developer were to create that facility our community would be blessed and AUM would become , I believe , a more desirable environment for may more IOS based musicians..
Paul I take hat of to you 🎩🙏👏👏👏👏🎵🎶🦄
First para, all those things are coming, including a kind of fader zoom and 15secax fade time. 2nd para is coming too. Its name is Atom Piano Roll 2 lol
@@GavinskisTutorials Sounds fabulous....and I’ve tried sleep but nothing happens 😂
Like a kid on the night before Xmas with all the new toys. That's literally what almost every day is like with the crazy amount of new apps recently 😂
Nice to see these features available in AUM now, even if through a 3rd party. 4Pockets is a very thoughtful developer.
We often talk about game changers but I serriously think this deserve that title. Once again many thanks for this tutourial, if not a winner this is on my Santa wish list.
My guy.... I'm always looking forward to see your videos. Very well done. This app is very interesting 👌...
Thanks Oswald!
Seems like Christmas it’s everyday. Exalted to see what it is the new app you talk about 🤩 ( thumbs up for the new shortcut for automation in beta)
Yeah! Automation shortcut rocks!
Really nice addition for AUM
So excited for this! AUM has been a game changer for me I use it every day
Totally, I use AUM in every vid even though I have a bunch of other daws. Aum just clicked with me
This is a nice addition. This might make it more interesting to use my iPad recording ideas. Just hope it doesn’t take to much cpu. Working with 12 channels in aum is already tricky without this mixer and automation
Wow this could be a game changer for improvised workflows.
Totally
Nice!!!! Short and sweet!!!!!
Very useful addition to AUM, like the automation possibilities 😁👍, thanks Gav for explaining so far 🧡
Teaser Beta! Great timing just brought this. Looks a fun mixer for creating ambient soundscapes changing between instruments. Agree about the size of the faders.
Yes - faders could definitely be bigger, whole thing could open up bigger. Will be very useful though!
I’m assuming the parameter updates are bidirectional. You move in AUM it moves in MIDIMixer and the reverse. Why yes they are. :)
As mentioned to Paul before - extended CC automation recording. In addition I think a smoothie tool could be useful. Example drawing in parameters that are too jagged that need to be evened (averaged) out a bit.
Yes, though I wonder if that stepping actually represents the fact that this is midi so is in fact not smooth!
Very nice features! Keep on going!
Thnx!
Looking forward to tinkering around with AUM MidiMixer!
Very nice job👍👍👍
Essential stuff indeed. Making music on an iPad 5 years ago vs today.. what an age we live in ;)
I love all of the 4Pockets apps. This looks like it is a ‘must’ for AUM, which I LOVE using!!!! A free code would be nice too...... it would definitely stop my wife from telling me off for spending again!!!!
The automation with this is an absolute godsend for a lot of the live material I use AUM for.
Definitely! Now, good luck in the draw, I feel your wife's pain lol
Looks great, thanks for the walkthrough!
Love your tutorials! I need this app in my life ASAP!
Thnx Rob!
Looks like a really good addition to AUM. good luck everyone👍
Nice video on a cool app. Paul is a machine!
He is. I like your tribute to Boards youtube name BTW 😋
Yes, been looking for something like this for a while! Thanks again for the demo.. Fingers crossed on this one :)
Looks like an excellent tool for use with AUM.
Cool mixer for jams ❤️
Loved the video, subscribed, keep up the good work! 👊
Thank you! There's a lot of good stuff in the archives for you to enjoy, have fun Timijan!
@@GavinskisTutorials awesome, thank you! Just got into iOS music production myself
Welcome, you're in for a lot of fun then. Make sure you join the forum at forum.audiob.us - such a useful place to learn about iOS music!
@@GavinskisTutorials thank you so much I appreciate it!
Thumbs up (given), subscribed (yep, long time), notification bell (on), won (not yet but keep trying).
Haha, good luck buddy, it's got to happen sooner or later
This looks extremely useful.
I agree about the manual, I really enjoy the way sugarbytes did it with Looperator, a well written PDF is super useful.
Oh it really is! It blows my mind how sloppy some devs are about doing good manuals
Wow, very interesting. I love the fact that it's universal! Yet another app to consider. :)
Great to (finally) have this kind of functionality in AUM. I guess the question is whether automation will be implemented one day natively into AUM as well...
Jonatan does want to I think, it just might take a while. A long while
4 pockets, great stuff they doin 😏, thx for the vid!
Thought for ages about this...no one came up with a solution...looking at Drambo...very late, but better than never...
This could be just what I was looking for..thanks for the guide!
Great tutorial, and great idea for AUM. Look forward to getting this at some point.
A must for AUM!
This looks like what I’ve been missing in my workflow ! Awesome
Thanks for the follow on twitter btw Philip!
Great demo,interesting app.
dope! just on break at work !
Want this mixer! Thank you!
Automation and an uncluttered view seems to be the selling point here.
Yup, both very welcome features. Looking forward to seeing how this develops.
Looks very good
I like the work flow.
Delete this
People will come to add it..
Paul will add it
Now stop your bullshit
Finish to play!
This whole concept was brought to me by 'Ed The Outcast' who worked closely with me during the making of this app. I want to offer a big thank you to Ed for the hard work he put in testing and the ideas he put forward to develop these new features you see here. I know this colaboration is controvercial with some, but please 'get over it'.
Just Amazing!!!
Hmm... Maybe a bar length option for the fades? Or maybe that's not possible. This will be great to use. Looking forward to it. Thank you
Do message Paul the dev with any suggestions 👍👍
@@GavinskisTutorials certainly! Thank you
Aum is great on so many levels. But I just could never understand why the mixer interface is not resizable. And no automation recording. Also missing is being able to switch between loaded apps with MIDI control. Glad to see this new mixer is going to provide some more functionality!
Yes, I think those updates will come but they might take years!
@@GavinskisTutorials Silly me I learned how to switch apps via MIDI in AUM. That feature already exists!
Cooooool it something new here!
Automatic! Yes sir. Thanks!
Does look cool. Paul is a man macnine
App Musician and AUM mix user.
Can you add a prelistening function in the Midi Miixer for AUM?
So you can „predecide“ wich channel you want to fade in into the mix. very useful APP by the way😍
Hi Rudolf, you should ask the developer, search on Facebook for 4Pockets and message him directly 👍
I want them all. Lol!!
That clarify about its usefulness. Tnx
this is awesome, ive always wanted something like this. Thank you 4Pockets for this App and Thank you Gavinski for this great video.
This looks like a must have, essential app if AUM is your iOS “DAW/Mixer” of choice. And AUM is definitely my “DAW” of choice. I hate to throw around the term but this is a... “Game Changer”!
P.S. You, my friend, have yourself a new Twitter follower.
Ah, nice! Welcome!
This app is indispensable .....if you play an instrument [ or not] the key to artistic nuance is the ability to control expression and many other midi parameters subject to midi control .This app delivers that ability in a bun dance 💃🏻 a little
Very nice. I think I'll need this. But now dying to know what the app you couldn't show us is!
I’m dying to tell you haha
@@GavinskisTutorials hint?
Automation Galore!!!! Very very needed app.
Thanks for the vid Gav!!
🤞🏽
Wonderful product. Update with more functions is on the way BTW! Thanks for the video.
Seems like a very useful app. AUM is my most used app so this could be a nice addition. I bigger screen Ipad is what I need
*Very* interested to see this one as AUM automation is something I have wanted forever. Paul has responded to my query re more flexibility for the link to AUM, and he has suggested a broader palette of templates is in prospect -I suggested that 2,4,6,8, and 12 channels would cover most real world use-cases.
Yes - I’m sure the AB Forum will be bursting with ideas from all the hardcore AUM users, what do you mean ‘more flexibility’ - do you mean that idea that he could work with Jonatan to make it all happen ‘automagically’? Yes - really AUM needs this baked in, ideally!
@@GavinskisTutorials Yes, I don’t think Paul and Jonatan have had any contact, and Paul explained that an ‘on the fly’ addition/subtraction of channels in his app mirroring what you do in AUM is not possible because of the Host/AU issue. I see myself most often defaulting to the 8 channel template as it is a natural fit for my Launchpad XL and Launchpad Pro, and I rarely need more than 8 main mix channels anyway, but having the option to automate a broader number of different channels according to need is something I need occasionally, and am currently doing that after the fact in Ableton. Of course, the ideal would be for Jonatan to implement editable automation directly in AUM itself, but hey... :)
Seems like it will come eventually, but this will fill the gap nicely
So many cool options, this is such a nice add for AUM. Nice overview, thanks!
Another great option for AUM. Thanks for bringing it to our attention. I like doing generative stuff this adds the opportunity to bring some control over what’s happening.
Yeah, I love generative stuff too so this will be so damn helpful
Bought in the first morning and before using it I just wanted to watch your video❤️
Interested to see how this works and gets updated and how it compares to LK usage
That mikser with good sequencism will be gamę changer for me
A mixer for your mixer!
I agree with you the faders are too small. I don’t understand this choice
Looks like another good one Paul's made they're .a really handy app👍
Don't know whether to get this or not I don't use aum that much but it looks really good👍
Thanks for another great tutorial, hope I can win this bad boy.
Wow. Great app. I hope I can win one. Thanks for all the effort to show us.
Very useful! Mostly automation of other apps’ parameters.
So glad I bought this. I will use those snap shots to create a intro, verse, chorus, bridge, solo, etc.
Sweet!
The fading feature between snapshots is the best feature in the app!
I guess you could do something approximative with NuRackFX from 4pockets.... but very approximative ! I was already hesitant to get the Channel Strip app , which combiné a gate, an parametric EQ and a compressor (it was designed for a drum app, VADrum). But midi mixer is clearly very appealing ! Before AUM existed, when there was only Audiobus, I remember I was very found of MiMix, which at that time really helped to give a boost to the poor AB3 mixer ! (it still is ...).
So yeah ! This MidiMixer is really something I need !
Have a nice day !
Thanks Cyril, good to hear from an old school iOSer!
Thank you for the walkthrough! Interesting app.
AUM is my rehearsal room and Cubasis is still the recording studio. Anything that helps me get more out of AUM is welcome. This and the 4pockets multi track could change AUM for me.
Defo! Though ppl have had some complaints about the multi track plugin, see AB Forum
I‘m wondering, if that helps me making music .
OK, this really is what I was hoping for as I have not yet bought an external controller. But, I saw today that the dev, Paul, had added the functionality that a 2nd iPad could be used to control the primary iPad where AUM is running, so I'm starting to wonder if and external hardware controller is necessary. As always, Gavin comes through with a very approachable, (for me) 1st-time users tutorial. My word, what a perfect time to be getting into iOS music!!!
Glad it was helpful John!
This looks like another essential app!
Mixer inside mixer , did say new version of aum us it new update
Paul is doing some serious job!! Thnx Gavin!
This is very very intriguing. Seems like it can do so much and if we know anything about Paul’s apps, it’s only going to get better and become even more useful.
Yes, expect some big updates the first few weeks at least for sure
I'm sure I said it before but it's nuts that this one guy puts out so many great apps and in such a short time. To be completely honest, I don't like the interface design of 4Pockets apps and they can be confusing and unintuitive to me and I don't like the way the manuals are done, if there are any at all. The apps are all well thought out though and very useful, if you are willing to put some time into learning. This one seems to be really novel and have features I always felt painfully lacking in my AUM sessions. Off to the app store, again ^^
I would agree with all these points, as would many. I'd love to see a new updated interface for the 4pockets apps.
Like many having a major arsenal of iOS thang-a-ma-bobbies. It’s the unique plugs that perk up my ears and make a diff. I’ll def purchase this if the gods ( you) don’t choose me.
😂👍
Hello, been watching your AUM turorials and now this Midimixer. Would like to know if you can use this inside a DAW? Thanks and a very informative video.
Thnx! Not sure to be honest - i only use AUM. Audiobus Forum would be a good place to ask 👍
Looks good. Quite a prolific developer! I use a Korg nanoKontrol controller to control AUM faders and parameters; this looks similar, but in this case one can use on the same device without an external MIDI device I suppose.
I have the same! Yes, this has that advantage
Had a horrible thought the other day: since Kymatica is arguably the best at implementation for these kind of must-have utilities, wouldn’t it suck if Apple did what they did to CamelAudio and buy them out, dumb it down, and integrate it into something semi-useless like GarageBand? 😬
(🤞 that never happens)
Highly unlikely, no?
@@GavinskisTutorials I hope so. However, one gets the impression that Apple doesn’t *really* invest too deeply in pro audio beyond basic hardware specs (for example, iirc the Audiobus guys worked very closely with Apple on audio “dumbpipe” optimization because it was underdeveloped by the latter until understood well enough to inform IAA when it came along. Again, that’s iirc.)
And depriving the world of Alchemy across all platforms only to have a decent-ish native synth with a massively deprecated feature set was just cruel. 😠
Definitely
The very fact this developer committed so much time and effort to creating this app should be proof to the AUM developers that their app could be radically improved. Quite honestly, I still find AUM a baffling bit of software that is not at all user friendly.
I'm not sure how much time you have spent with it but I reckon that probably almost any host-type app is quite confusing when you first start using it as they all have their own workflow. I find aum very well done personally, but that's likely just because I am used to it already
This is much needed, ESPECIALLY the 12 track template!!! I'm starting to wonder if Paul gets any sleep developing all these apps?? 4 Pockets comes through with ANOTHER great app...💪🏾
Nino you do realise Paul was created in professor Frankensteins laboratory and built with not only superhuman intelligence but he was designed to function on no sleep. This might just be the app of the year for a lot of people.
THIS IS TRUE!!!!
I have thought about using a sequencer track of some sort in AUM to turn on and off channels and do fade in and out according to a time line though midi messages, but I never took the time to figure that out if possible. This looks like it can offer something similar in a simple way.
Possible yes, I have done it, but this seems easier!
Another great review - thank you 👍😎. I agree with you about the length of the faders (longer would be nice), and the programmed fade times (type entry would be perfect). Also looking forward to which parameters are exposed - being able to launch snapshot buttons live via midi footswitch would be worth the entry price alone. 🤞
Ah yeah! Thanks for reminding me I forgot to check the parameters 👍
I think this has some cool potential but I also see some issues in this initial 1.0. I have good hopes for upcoming pointreleases...
Yes, what issues do you see?
This is a nice addition. This might make it more interesting to use my iPad recording ideas. Just hope it doesn’t take to much cpu. Working with 12 channels in aum is already tricky without this mixer and automation
I didn't check but this kind of app will certainly be very light on cpu, it is just midi, don't worry!
This looks really useful and I'm curious what future updates will bring. Thanks for this great overview :).
Cheers Hannes!
Just left Paul a message about fader size and fade times, he’s usually very good about making changes people want so.......
Yes, I expect this will get some radical updates in the first few weeks
This is a real gap filler. Nice work, Paul. 👍
Cool, I think this covers a lot of the functionality of an app I thought *I* would write. 🥺 Nice, but *sigh*.
Ah, damn!
