I bought/rescued a TWH mare last summer with EPM. She did well with treatment and through her whole ordeal we've bonded amazingly. I dont know her history but she CAN gait and when she does its sooo super smooth and amazing BUT she always breaks the gait after a few good strides and goes into an extremely wonky fast walk that makes me feel like one of those waving inflatables stores use to advertise a sale!😆~ I'm hoping these tips can help!
My special girl is also on the "lazy" side...when I'm working with her she acts like she's just too exhausted to move...she even closes her eyes at times. Then soon as I open the gate and let her go, she takes off like a raging bat outta hell!! Yesterday, she wouldnt move past a slow walk unless i REALLY got my energy up and tapped the back of my saddle with my dressage whip, but when i let her go, she actually gaited BEAUTIFULLY all the way to the hay hut. This girl is smart as a whip and she knows she has my wrapped around her little hoof. 🙄💖🐴
WOW, awesome info. Just started break-in my fox trotter and new to gaited horses. Love your knowledge and sharing. Super helpful. Thanks Jo from New Zealand
I love your tips! Especially the stop & praise (30-60 sec, 5-10 minutes if the horse has a major breakthrough!) Also softening/relaxing your seat/body as a reward when the horse is moving nicely for you! I found that out on my own, and it felt Good, but your confirmation that you do this for your horses, as well, really boosted my confidence! Thank you! Is there a way to silence your Notifications while you're recording? I'm concentrating so intently on what you're saying, then...💢 so loud I literally "spook in place" EVERY time! 😱 Esp. the twang at 24:10 in this video! Jeez-louise! Sorry! I'm just being honest. Love ya, lady!🐴
Ivy next time your in Michigan it would be great to trail ride! I have several rescue gaited horses, some better at gaiting than others. It would be fun just to ride with someone who likes gaited horses
I’m curious why you make your videos in your car🤔. On today’s ride I tried leaning slightly forward or slightly backwards as needed if Fancy’s gait got at all towards the trotting or pacey side, and it worked! I was able to just leave the reins alone☺️. Great tips! Thanks for adding to my tool box!
The car is good lighting during the day, cuts out outside noises and distractions, and has relatively good sound. :) :D That is so awesome to hear it worked!!! Thank you so much for telling me!!!!
Hey Ivy, it appears I am new to gaiting. I have been a mountain guide on horseback for some years now in Spain. I own 6 horses and have always tried to get their pace really fast. I have managed to get it fast but nothing compared to what gaiting looks like. They are all half arabian horses (mixed with spanish and thoroughbreds). Is it accomplishable with these breeds? if so what should I focus on more than with American breeds? Thanks in advance!
If I could see some videos, that might help. If the horses are pacing, it is very possible they can gait as the horses in my videos do, but you have to start with really slow speeds and then work up to the faster speeds. I don't know for sure that those breeds can do it, but they might!
hi ivy, connie overhere from the Netherlands, could i send you a video from my rmh, he is 5 years old and green, so i don t see any gait while i am longing him?
You are welcome to send me a video. You can email me through my website. It's not uncommon for gaited horses to not gait when being lunged or on the ground.

Ivy Schexnayder I figured it must be something like that, but my curiosity got the best of me☺️.
How can you tell when the horse is pacing vs trotting while riding?
I talk about it in this DVD: ivyshorses.com/product/ride-along-lessons-for-the-gaited-horse-dvd/
