But at the same time, the first place prize at Robert's tournament was 40,000 gold dragons i think D&D just didn't bother thinking about currency value because this just makes no sense. The Hound was feared. These gold cloaks wanted 60x his bounty just as a bribe for some fermented crab smuggled in?
Definitely seeing how Rhaegar Targaryen won a Knight's tournament in order to win Lyanna's heart and Robert beat Rhaegar with his trusty hammer during the rebellion I'll say Gendry has Robert's blood in his veins after all

At 5% value, that is still almost 8000 dollars in silver alone. It seems weird to even point this "issue" out. The focus of the scene is not the currency, obviously. But it is important in a world building sense, as a writer you can stretch things around. But when you write that 10 silver stags is a generous bounty for one of the largest and most deadly men on the continent. Then later, a simple bribe to look the other way on a small rowing boat is 30 gold dragons. You are breaking the world which was built.

These two guards sure weren't the brightest of bulbs. As soon as they realized they might have a fugitive wanted by the queen on their hands they should have realized the stakes were suddenly raised to life-or-death levels and demanded everybody back off and drop any weapons. What did they think was going to happen as soon as they realized this might be "the dwarf" she is looking for -- that Davos and Gendry were sheepishly going to say "yeah, you got us". Seems unlikely that two guards on the grift like this would be so naïve.
Well if you're corrupt enough to take bribes in the first place you're probably not that great at or passionate about your job. These guys didn't care about their duty, all they saw was dragon signs in their eyes ("You can arrange to pay us more than Queen Cersei?"), which kept them from getting their guard up and following the proper protocol when dealing with a fugitive. Seems pretty realistic to me.

If anything the fact that they are corrupt would suggest that they are more worldly and shrewd and therefore _should_ have recognized that the guys they are confronting just got backed into a corner. Thus with that statement he's acknowledging they're going to arrest them (or at least Tyrion) and therefore should have recognized that these men might do something desperate. Actually, as I wrote that last sentence, I realized that it was possible the guards fatally misinterpreted the situation and assumed Davos and and Gendry were simple smugglers who would have no attachment or loyalty to Tyrion and quickly give him up. Thus I guess the first part of my OP still stands up: they weren't very bright.

These two guards sure weren't the brightest of bulbs. As soon as they realized they might have a fugitive wanted by the queen on their hands they should have realized the stakes were suddenly raised to life-or-death levels and demanded everybody back off and drop any weapons. What did they think was going to happen as soon as they realized this might be "the dwarf" she is looking for -- that Davos and Gendry were sheepishly going to say "yeah, you got us". Seems unlikely that two guards on the grift like this would be so naïve.
Well if you're corrupt enough to take bribes in the first place you're probably not that great at or passionate about your job. These guys didn't care about their duty, all they saw was dragon signs in their eyes ("You can arrange to pay us more than Queen Cersei?"), which kept them from getting their guard up and following the proper protocol when dealing with a fugitive. Seems pretty realistic to me.
@@noncrediblecase341 But I don't think it's so much about being good at their jobs. If anything the fact that they are corrupt would suggest that they are more worldly and shrewd and therefore _should_ have recognized that the guys they are confronting just got backed into a corner. The statement "You can arrange to pay us more than Queen Cersei?" was a rhetorical question -- the guard well knew there was no way they had more money than the queen. Thus with that statement he's acknowledging they're going to arrest them (or at least Tyrion) and therefore should have recognized that these men might do something desperate.
Actually, as I wrote that last sentence, I realized that it was possible the guards fatally misinterpreted the situation and assumed Davos and and Gendry were simple smugglers who would have no attachment or loyalty to Tyrion and quickly give him up. Thus I guess the first part of my OP still stands up: they weren't very bright.
