    I worked 32 hours in Los Angeles my first days (this past Fri-Sun) with my 2022 Tesla Model 3 Performance. I made over $1,100, and the rate I'm paying Hertz is $430/week. Charging cost is fairly minimal, I've probably supercharged about $50 worth so far, and of course I still have today and the next 3 days to make money driving until I have to pay again to renew. It is worth it, but only if you are willing to work very long hours, and take few days off. And of course you have to live in an area where the rides are consistent almost any time of day.

      This is great insight! I definitely agree, this seems to make the most sense in busier more congested areas where the rides and chargers are abundant. I appreciate you sharing your experience!

    Instead of texting each passenger how to operate door handle I’ve put a sticker that says PUSH on the side of the handle where they need to push it. Also I’ve put a sticker OPEN DOOR on the button that opens door. BUT WAIT!!! There is more! 😂 I’ve put a note explaining that you need to manually push the door while pressing OPEN DOOR button 😂. Problem solved 👍

    Note, if you get into one of the Tesla rental programs for Uber, you cannot use the standard IRS tax deduction since you don’t own the vehicle. And, if you buy a Tesla for Uber, remember to include depreciation of the vehicle in your deduction calculations. Depreciation is going to add up to over 25 cents a mile. You’re also going to have higher insurance and have to buy tires more frequently. By my calculations you’re barely coming in under the standard deduction rate.

    Hertz real price is 520.00 (commercial insurance + fees) a week and if you return the car earlier they will still charge the driver for the entire week. And tesla charging stations are also on the expensive side which is 28.00 for 270 miles and you have to wait about half an hour for an 80% charge.

    • @DriveMiles
      @DriveMiles  2 роки тому

      Yeah the whole Hertz Uber pairing doesn't seem to be the most viable solution yet. It's cool that it's an option, but especially in terms of rentals it doesn't seem to make the most financial sense.

      Tesla chargers are the cheapest and certainly aren’t 28$ to get 270mi. For one you are paying for kilowatts. So for a base model 3 you are paying 18 bucks at worst for a full charge. Which which you wouldn’t be paying because no one drives down to 0%. Also 30 minutes for a lunch break isn’t bad at all 🤷🏾‍♂️

    If you have the stay within the area filter, I suggest to use it. I live in Vegas and I use it every day because I don’t want to go way out on the outskirts of Vegas. I focus within the airport, strip and downtown/freemont area. I can filter as small as a 5 mile radius to a much bigger radius. With Lyft, you have to be in silver status to get 2 filters. I’m at the gold status, and I get 3 filters. With Uber, I can only use the destination filter because I have not reached platinum status on Uber. I don’t know if other cities or states do the stay within the area filter like Vegas does, but it’s worth it if you are in busy city/state that you can get rides easily anytime of the day. Before I moved to Vegas from California 8 years ago. I did Uber Lyft my first year in OC Cali for one year there from 2015 to 2016. At that time, they did not have the stay within the area filter. I sure wish they did, because I was stuck in traffic with all the major freeways 91, 55, 57, 22, just to name a few. I lived in Anaheim Ca at the time. When someone from the OC wanted a ride to LAX, Hollywood, DTLA, Pasadena etc from the Orange County area, it really sucked to me back then. Having the stay in area filter really helps me out with a lot of things. I plan on getting a EV car within the next 2 years hopefully sooner, but we will see. Thanks for the advice and video. Good job 👍

    • @DriveMiles
      @DriveMiles  3 місяці тому

      Thanks for sharing your experience! That "stay within" feature would have been so nice to have. It sucks that it's reserved for platinum only, but that's incentive to get there I guess! Traffic in/near the big cities can be really awful. Thanks for watching and I wish you the best!

    The inconvenient door handles is certainly one concern I would have. Having to explain 50 times a day to your passenger how to open a door, kind of proves that it's a pretty terrible design.
    Be really nice if they would implement Android auto and Apple carplay. Then you wouldn't have to manually input the address every single time. You would hit start trip and it would automatically pop it up on the big screen. Honestly I would just Mount the phone right next to the screen and just use the phone for navigation as I do currently.
    Have you had any problems with people having difficulty getting into the back seat. The roof line is pretty low, I had a friend that I took to the Tesla showroom, she had some mobility issues and I wanted to test it out with her. She could not get into the backseat of a model 3. She put her butt on the seat and could not duck her head enough under the roof line to actually enter the car. The model y she had no issues with.
    Thanks for the tips.

    • @DriveMiles
      @DriveMiles  2 роки тому +1

      Android Auto/Carplay would be a great addition for that reason especially. I have actually invested in a mount that holds the phone close to the left side of the screen and definitely like it.
      I haven't had many problems in terms of getting into the back seat. There are maybe 3 times that I can remember helping a handicapped person into the backseat. It's definitely easier than with the 3. In addition to the relatively low roof line, the bottom area of the back door where you put your feet in and out is relatively small too. Plenty of scuffs there.

      That's what I noticed too getting it in and out with the legs can be problematic in the three. The model S surprisingly isn't that great either. The door opening was surprisingly not that large. I took a look at a 2015 s. Took a tape measure with me just trying to measure like the distance from the back of the front seat to the front of the back seat edge the door opening how wide the door swings open etc trying to get some actual measurements rather than just seeing how it looked. I was kind of surprised that my Prius actually has an easier entry and exit than that Model S. I then went and looked at a model 3 and surprisingly it was actually easier to get in and out of the model 3 for myself than the Model S. But I took a friend of mine who is physically challenged, her hips don't work very well she's short and kind of plump. And she actually could not get into the backseat of a model 3. She has to sit down on the seat and then rotate into a car. And the distance to the roof line was too low and she could not tuck her head under the roof line while sitting on the back seat to get in the vehicle. We tried the model y and it was perfectly fine for her. The problem is I really don't want to spend $65,000 for a car to drive Uber. I can almost buy three Priuses for that price and I would never save enough in fuel and maintenance to equal the difference.
      The Chevy bolt is kind of intriguing to me, I took her to take a look at one of those and that car was perfectly easy to get in and out of in the backseat. Of course it's lacking DC fast charging speeds. But day in and day out it would be a much better Uber car. And for the difference in price I could just keep my Prius for long road trips if necessary

      I have about 400 trips driving my M Y on the Uber platform and most people figure out the door handles just fine. Occasionally I have to roll down a window and explain it, but mostly people do okay with them. Small lettering decals might help: “push” on one section and then “pull” on the top of the long skinny part might work. But then the decals might fall off and get stuck behind the lever. Everything’s a trade off. I find people have a harder time figuring out how to push the button on the inside of the door handle to get out of the car as compared to operating the outside door handle. I find this strange because it literally has a picture of an open door on it, and it is the only glowing thing in the back of the car. 🤷‍♂️

    • @kens97sto171
      @kens97sto171 10 місяців тому

      @@aaronbounds1336
      Where I live there are just a lot less Teslas in general. And I kept imagining that every single time I pick up a passenger I'm going to have to roll down the window and explain how to open the damn door. The interior door bothered me too. I think somebody makes bright orange stickers or brighter LEDs or something or maybe both that you can put in that inside door switch.
      I think that was a bigger fear for me. You get some intoxicated young female that can't figure out how to get out of your car and begins to panic. Not going to end well.
      I wish they would do a door handle more like the Volkswagen ID4 where it looks like a door handle and you just reach your hand under it and pull.
      Or do it like the new cybertruck where there's a big button you press and the door pops open and you just grab the door and open it. That would be okay too.
      I'm not a Tesla hater at all I think they're awesome cars. But at the time I made my purchase those were the things I was thinking about, plus the car I bought was $20,000 cheaper than any Tesla I could have purchased so it was kind of a no-brainer. Also gets my feet wet with EVs.

      This video was made purely from my experience. It's great to hear from someone who was able to rent an Uber from Hertz for use with Uber! I'm assuming the vehicles that Hertz is renting out are the Standard Range models which do have a slightly more limited range. While it was my only source of income at the time, I was only driving for between 20-25 hours per week and doing around 50 rides per week. I can definitely see it being more limiting than an ICE vehicle, although depending on where you live, the Tesla Supercharger network is very robust and quite common. You can be back on the road after 15 minutes with plenty of charge to continue driving. I appreciate you sharing your point of view! I'm very interested to see how EVs progress and become more practical for these uses in the coming years.

    I picked up a Tesla Model 3 from hertz today for Uber. Prior picking up the Tesla I used a Bolt. It was super easy, as the Bolt had Carplay. With my phone connected to the Bolt, the Uber App was integrated into CarPlay. As a result, I could navigate/accept trips on my iPhone and bolts screen interchangeably. With the Tesla, I’m needing to put a customers customer’s address in the Tesla navigation separately. Is there a way to make this easier? I’ve seen a device that lets the Tesla’s utilize CarPlay, but I’d like my passengers to get the full Tesla experience on the teslas interface. I’m new to Uber, so please excuse my confusing question.

      Exactly and I’m not fully charged up and I take a ride to San Diego and back at 10:30 PM at night round-trip could be 250 miles if not more is that really worth my time spending charging compared to and I see that takes me 10 minutes to fill up That gets 40 miles to the gallon because I just do highway miles. I’m trying to figure out the benefit of spending a half an hour to 45 minutes charging it’s not about saving money it’s about making money 45 minutes LAX to Irvine 45 miles back to LAX 45 miles 90 miles down on a full charge now I’m at a very low amount when I get back to the airport for my next ride I have to go to charge so that would mean I would miss the window of rush-hour at the airport. I’m going to lose by spending that time charging or gassing up at a Costco. It’s kind of the same thing to me time is money at LAX there’s small windows do you want to sit charging for 45 minutes and then sit at the airport for another 2 to 3 hours? Guess what you’re going to be broke homeless and hungry real quick I just don’t see electric cars progressing when you drive 400 to 500 miles a day I drive about 8000 miles a month I would have to replace the battery in the car every year is not really worth my time and my money for an extra dollar a ride probably not

      There are so many variables at play here. If we assume the batteries are good for their suggested 300k to 500k mile lifespan, then it would last between 3.5 to 5.5 years if it was to completely die at that point. That being said, there's currently insufficient data to accurately predict the state of the battery at that point. Oh, sure. If your goal is to drive Uber Black, then yes, your car has to have a black interior and exterior. Uber Black is not available in all states, though. But even when driving 25 hours a week I was able to bring in over $800. Might not be a lot, but it was enough for me to get by. It really all depends on your location and how busy the area is. In northeast NJ it's fairly densely populated so I had no trouble getting plenty of rides. Now in eastern Connecticut I find it much more difficult to even get UberX rides. It's all relative.

    This video failed to explain that car payment is for 60-70 months and as a full time Uber/Lyft driver your going to put at least 8k-9k miles on the Tesla every month.
    This video also fails to explain the Tesla will be out of warranty within the first 12 months of ownership with a full time Uber/Lyft driver.
    The best and ONLY car a full time Uber/Lyft driver should purchase new is a Prius or Camry.
    The Honda Accord is a good car as well and would round it my top 3 cars for Uber driving full time.
    NEVER purchase the Tesla used or new it's DEFINITELY not a car that's practical for Uber/Lyft driving full time.
    I also have to MENTION with the Tesla you'll be watching your life disappear having to fast charge at least 2-3 times a day or every 3-4 hours.
    This will definitely turn your 8 hour shift into a 10 hour shift every time and there's no way around it.
    I'm a full time Uber driver in Orlando, Florida and I've rented the Tesla for 4 months straight.
    I was making $2,100-$2,500 per week driving my personal gas car driving the full 12 hours per daily shift that Uber allows.
    In the Tesla I'm making $1,700-$1,850 per week and this is due to the constant 45 minutes per charge and charging at least 2-3 times per 12 hour shift.
    Whoever believes Tesla is the car to use for ride sharing is an idiot 😔

    • @DriveMiles
      @DriveMiles  8 місяців тому

      Thanks for sharing your experiences! Yes, the financing on my vehicle is a 72-month loan. That timeframe might not make sense for someone who is driving for Uber full-time. To minimize the effects of charging downtime, I definitely would suggest that people take advantage of the charging curve and not waste time charging past 80%. In my experience that rarely takes longer than 30 minutes, although of course it's going to be longer than a gas station fill-up. Electric vehicles in general aren't for everyone at the moment and I'm certainly not recommending every single person to go get one. Hopefully this video helps people who do choose to use a Tesla for ride-sharing to make it a little bit easier and more enjoyable. Thanks for watching!

    • @davidlee1467
      @davidlee1467 6 місяців тому +1

      It all depends on your driving style. I drive Uber full time in San Francisco with a Tesla Model Y, I average 110 miles a day, I never take long trips except for the airport trips(which is only 20 mins from downtown SF), I focus on efficiency, I mostly drive short trips that pay over 2 dollars per mile, any long ride (doesn't matter how good it pays,), any ride that crosses the two bridges(Golden Gate and Bay Bridge ), any ride going to the South Bay Area(San Jose),any ride that pays below $2 per mile is a instant decline to me. There are a lot of stops and gos in the city, which is perfect for my car to constantly recharge. I can typically hit $260 in about 9 hours, and still with 30% of battery left. This strategy is only good for Tesla and other EV drivers and drivers that don't need to make a lot of money. Best thing about my strategy is that I don't need to go to a supercharger to recharge during the day, I can leave early work 8 to 9 hours nonstop and be back home and still have 7hours to myself. Putting less mileage on the car also means the car can last longer, but I admit my strategy is not for everyone!
