Rented from Hertz a few months ago. Seamless experience. Renting again for another road trip to gain more experience and not use my own car.
Highly recommend renting before buying.
Just started renting a Tesla today. The guy didn't really want to spend a lot of time explaining much. This video is very useful. Thanks
We used Turo recently, and fortunately they shared the car in the app so we could add our phone as a key.
I'm from brazil and I'll get the chance to drive a tesla for the very first time in Toronto and that's the best video I found so far!
We have had our new Tesla Model 3 for 6 weeks now and I have watched several "how-to" videos, but I still learned a few new tricks watching your Hertz video!
Yesterday, I got a Hertz TMY as my free rental when dropping off our TMY for new car warranty work for a tiny 3 mm paint defect at a local high end auto body repair centre in Toronto. Hertz brought the to the repair centre and had it ready when I dropped off ours. It was 97% charged. He told me to make sure it was 20% full when I came back. I did actually know the car was a Tesla until leaving the waiting room and walking to the car. Interestingly, it has Quebec plates (they love EVs too). It also had 15,000 KMs on it. The range was was 505 kms. Sadly, I don’t think I could get my profile on it. Elon said we would about a year ago. Maybe it’ll be in about two weeks more. PS The Hertz fellow offered me insurance for $27 a day. My VISA coverage can’t apply as it was free. I declined and check with my insurance broker who said I am covered because my car was in for repair. Check your insurance before you throw away money for insurance you don’t need.
This video is awesome!! I rented what I thought was a gas car from Hertz. I didn't pay attention to the key, but when I arrived at my car, realized it was a Tesla model 3. I've never drove an EV before. This video showed me basic operations and what was also very helpful was the explanation of charging the vehicle. Thank you for this instructional video!!
I’m in a Hertz rental now lol. I reserved a compact but they didn’t have any so gave me the Tesla 😅
I’ve rented multiple teslas from Turo. Both times had app access and it made it so awesome. I had thought about if I did a 3 or Y from Hertz I would buy my own key card and program that to the car so I wouldn’t have to use their silly covered card
John we are sharing this video with the Uber community. We wish that you had shown how to specifically look up chargers on the screen. We will add to our presentations. Thank you for making this video
John, excellent tutorial as always. When on business trips I’ve rented 2 - Model 3’s and 2 - Polestars at Hertz and Enterprise. Polestar costs less for obvious reasons. Lack of phone app is an impediment, but not bad enough to make me switch to an ICE vehicle. Beware, you may need a long extension cord for 120v charging. At Hertz headquarters in Florida, attendant claimed I must return EV with 70% battery or face a $35 penalty. Shocking, but needs confirmation.
Turo makes no economic sense unless cost is irrelevant. When you add Turo booking fee, rental cost far exceeds car rental companies. Another Turo weakness is you can’t ask owner questions such as charging adapters provided, drop off locations, options on vehicle, etc. prior to booking vehicle.
Hertz wont allow to charge past 80% I charged at closest super charger to 80 then lost 5% driving to SFO rental return and they charged me 35$ charging fee. Plus they didn't have a charger with the car so I could not charge any where but the super chargers which were rare in Norther California. I contacted them and they said they don't plan on adding the charger and 5% less was still charging me a 35$. I can't see myself going with Hertz after this.
You're saying, there is a hard coded limit to 80% State of charge? You can't set the slider to 100% for trips?
@@harry-etoI watched a video where they show you can on the rental slide to 100
Rented from Budget and got no instructions so a little frustrating that I had to figure out how to set steering, mirrors etc. Asked Budget rep and no one at terminal knew anything about a Tesla. I had EV experience with my BMW but it never the less was a learning experience that I needed some sort of quick start intro like yours. Thanks!
I love your content. Here an idea for a future video.
You have focused a lot on their progress and latest and greatest. It would be interesting to zoom out and explore what Tesla has achieved over the past 3/4 years and what we might speculatively expect in the next 3/4 years.
Thank you John for this video, I was inspired by it in preparing for my first trip in a Tesla Model 3, a 1100 mile round trip from Las Vegas to Lake Tahoe. It was very successful.
Thanks so much! This video is all I needed before my first Tesla rental. Can’t wait to drive it (Model Y)!
I was able to rent a Tesla much cheaper than all other vehicles (yes including compact cars). I am nervous about driving and general operations but this video has eased my fears of the unknown. Thanks for all the useful information that I need to get behind the wheel and drive. 😊
Yes. I was surprised at Budget, that the cheapest car was a Tesla. I jumped at it. I’m looking forward to playing around with it.
Thank you to Dr. know it all for this video.
@@KenLahne2 After watching this video I rented from hertz and it was 50 a day. That was the same price as the cheapest compact car. What I learned was charging at a Tesla station was super easy and quick. If you put in your destination it tells you where and when to charge. I knew I was going to a rural area so had to make sure I had the charging kit. I’m glad I knew to ask for it because it was not in my car. The Tesla charging took about 20 minutes or so. The other one with the adapter said it would take 11 hours. 😩 I plugged in in the morning and walked around town had breakfast went to more shops had lunch and finally had enough to get back to the freeway. What I didn’t know was, originally it was charging to 80% on a normal trip with charging availability, no problem. You can mess around with the onscreen charging and move it to 100%. Sure it will take longer at Tesla station but it would have saved literal hours at this other one. Other than that it was a great experience and fun to drive.
I've been hoping someone would make this video for a while
Thanks for informative video. I rented a model 3 from hertz in CT. The staff was very helpful in explaining the car to us. My biggest complaint was that the "forced me" to take their insurance, which was $40 which was 80% of the rental cost. I did reach out to hertz corporate and after a few emails the refunded the money I paid for insurance.
Today I rented a Tesla from Hertz in Rhode Island. They didn't force me to pay any extras. If you are over 25 years old and are using a Visa or MasterCard you should be fine without any extras. Some might pressure you so they get more sales.
@@virginiabaez7047 i think you misunderstood him. all prices are always per DAY.
So 40$ per day is a huge price increase. If he says it's 80% of the rent fee per day. It means that out of 50$ that they ask per day. They want another 40$ only for the insurance.
It makes absolutely no sense at all. No matter how much he earns.
Renting today at same airport so your video should help tons. Thanks👊
My concern is the miles range..i drive alot on the weekends. So if get low, i need to make a trip to Target to get it charged..lol
Ideally the gap adjustment should be in seconds rather than car lengths, so the gap is an automatically longer distance to the car in front the faster you go.
I rented a Model 3 from Hertz in January. I was able to connect the app and use my phone as the key immediately. It was smooth as silk.
Ok, I hate to be critical of this as there is lots of good information, but the one thing that we really needed to know when renting a Tesla is how to thoroughly use the navigation system. The author of this video approached a discussion on navigation twice in this video and then diverted into useless discussions on how to open the charging door by saying "open butthole" (twice in this video) or how to play fart noises in the car by using the toy box feature. What we really needed to know was how to get to the navigation screen, how to enter in an address and finally how to tell the car to stop at super chargers along the way. Perhaps the car will automatically tell you to stop at particular super chargers along the way, but we don't know that, we were too busy learning how to set the following distance behind another car when using cruise control (3 separate times in this video). Additionally, the charging adapter displayed for a brief second in this video will NOT work with Electrify America stations. That little adapter will only work with simple J1772 level-2 stations found at hotels, not DC fast charging stations. Great video otherwise, but you've really missed the mark on the one piece of subject material that really matters to somebody renting a Tesla for the first time.
Super useful video, thanks Doc!
Nice video! Does the testa come with a level1/2 charger? I’m going to be staying at an airbnb and would have the option to plug into 120v. I get it would take a long time to charge, but hey, it’s going to be just sitting in the driveway over night and I’m not paying for electricity…
I watched a few other videos and yours covers everything I needed to know about renting a Tesla from Hertz. Well done!
Super helpful video. Thanks for the details.
Thanks! Needed this video...I am going on a road trip from Montreal to Ottawa tomorrow in a Model 3. First Time!
(For now still) an ICE vehicle driver here. FYI a light car with a stick shift has pretty strong engine braking. So some portion of the ICE drivers are not oblivious to the effect lifting off the throttle can have.
That was an excellent informative video. Thanks and best wishes.
The email I received recently has requested that I return it with at least 80% charge remaining
Your video is quite useful. However I want to let you know of a correction. You state that the Tesla only needs a 10-20% charge when returned to Hertz. That may be true in San Jose. However I contacted Hertz for my up coming rental at the Pittsburgh AIrport. It must be returned with an 80% charge to avoid additional charges. Since the charging slows substantially at 80%, that becomes a problem.
0:15 MUCH better intro than the previous! ^_^
very informative. Thank you
At what price does Hertz charge you for each kWh? Because Tesla has different prices depending on if you are an affiliated member or not, and the difference can be big after many recharges.
They just charge you whatever Tesla charges them. No mark up like on gas. This has been my experience.
Thanks!
Great video. Very informative
What camera are you using in this video? Looks good!
Thank you. This video is really useful and easy to understand,
Great video covering all of the important basics! I was looking in the merch store for the specific shirt you're wearing and couldn't find it. Out of stock?
Great explanations. Thanks!
With the new 2024 Model 3 Rear Wheel Drive version, it uses LFP batteries which can be charged to 100%. But if the LFP batteries are also very slow to charge above 80%, then that sucks because you’re already limited to low mileage at 100% charge. If I could afford a new car in 2024, i’m gonna wait for the 2024 Model Y Juniper which allegedly will have the new CATL LFP battery that will have 500+ mile range.
Very helpful,lthank you.
Im planning a trip to Florida in June and rented a Tesla at Budget but never driven a tesla.. im wondering how i will pickup and how everything works, it worries me a bit since budget has no info. Almost considering backing out and rent a traditional car
Do all the hertz model y's come with the induction low profile wheel tire setup? I'd rather had the aero wheels for increased range rather than looks.
Best review 🎉 thanks
Hey Dr. Know it all! Do you know if/how to add your Tesla driver profile to your Hertz rental?
Thanks John a great crash course
I wouldn't ever rent from Hertz again. They have a history of reporting returned cars or even currently rented cars as stolen, causing their customers to be arrested improperly.
What was the charge level at Avis at pick-up?
The video is very instructive.
I rented a Model Y . On the HWY my Model Y would go from 92 down to 26SOC in only 91 miles. So. Charge an hour to drive an hour is about right. Also I would lose 1-2soc overnight. Currently HERTZ is dumping all its EV's and buying back all IC cars. So. Not sure you can rent one from them any longer.
They are DUMPINg maybe 1/3 of the EV’s. It is not clear exactly why they are dropping them. The ones available for purchase have quite a few miles on them. Regardless, I see plenty available to rent.
They are dropping EVs because low residual value when it comes to selling the car after a few years, and repair costs are significantly higher than regular cars.@@56ctconger
Sounds like a lemon to me. In warm weather, you should be getting 3x that amount. Then again, Hertz abuses these things, so maybe the battery was shit.
very helpful.
Hertz gave me the car at 85% they asked me to return it at 80%. They didn't say what the consequences are though.
absolutely loved renting a tesla. I showed up, added my key card after getting in, and the hotel charged for free.
Improvements would be allowing my phone profile to be added and all settings, game saves, and features follow the app.
So hertz doesn’t charge you for the charge they have to put in the car when you bring it back at 10%?
may i know how to reserve specific Model from Hertz? as a new user to Hertz, it looks like i don't have any visibility on the EV type even the brand i reserved before i actually walk into the parking lot.
Why Hertz’s Bet On Tesla Isn’t Paying Off In The U.S.
thank you very much,
Model Y with a second display?????????????? WTF
I go through and delete all the previous phones on any rental I get.
How do you adjust the air vents?
Asking for a friend.
A year since this was uploaded is a long time
Best video, tks.
Really helpful video. But why on Earth would you need a bio defence mode?
If you I’ve in China or in a fire prone area it is great to eliminate cabin pollution.
The charging situation is too exposed
Do you get charged idling fees if you are charging above 80%?
No, idle fee is when charging has reached your desired limit and no more power is going into your vehicle. Effectively, the charger is idling. You are blocking the stall so no one else can charge. There is a 5 minute grace period before penalty is triggered.
When not knowing exactly when I can return to stall, I set charge limit to 100% because reaching that takes a very long time.
does a tesla rented from hertz have dog mode allowed?
Most rental companies don’t allow pets. Of course bonafide service dogs don’t count as a “pet”, but they would go with you.
Hertz better ! Toro ? no way!
STEADFAST
Why on earth renting a Tesla. Renting cars should be fun. So, no Tesla. Rent something else that does make fun !
You’re in crack dude. I just rented a Tesla and that thing was fun as heck to drive. The instant torque was legit.
Very useful video, thank you
Thank you!!
Hertz now allows you to pair your phone so you now have Tesla app access.
