- It is estimated that in Bombay, there are 85,000 Ragpickers (the name by which garbage collectors are popularly known in india).This highly independant and industrious lot also ekes out a living by sorting out and selling a large part of the city's increasing load of waste(nearlyn8,000 tons per day).
What is their world like? What draws them to an unromantic workplace like various dumping centers and garbage bins around the city? What is the gap between their dreams and their reality? WHat do they feel about the world which offers them only rubbish?How do they grapple with their problems that range from bringing home money for the next meal to running an errant household to pitching small dreams for their children?
The film, RAGPICKERS, scavengers of a different graveyard, attempts to explore this world of theirs and create a sensitive potrayal of a group of people who rarely move away from the fringe.Yet, they live a brave life, seldom compromising on their inherent dignity.
How beautiful to watch those ladies twirl in colourful saris & the beach's backdrop!I'm glad these ragpickers have a group to turn to...My heart goes out to the innocent kids born to this life.
Lord thank u for my wonderful life. I can't complain anymore.
And in the end (the last two minutes of the video), the innocence of the children is very touching. May God Bless these little ones.
These women are an inspiration!!! No matter what country, it always seems that the poor women are the ones taking care of the family!! Most women are a lot stronger emotionally than most men!! Women will work their asses off to make sure their kids are fed and taken care of!! More men have abandoned their kids than women!! Men get stressed, they drink or abandon their families because it's "too hard" for them to deal with!! Women will beg, if they have to, just to make sure their kids eat at least once a day!! Some say men rule the world. I truly think that it's women in the background that has more power!! Now this is not meant to man bash!! There are good men out there in the world! They work hard for their families!! They too are an inspiration!! The one father in this compilation, the one that had the wife set fire to herself, he just broke my heart!! Watching him show his late wife's belongings, that he still holds onto, was heart wrenching!! You could tell he really loves her, regardless of the fact that she is dead!! He loves his children and takes good care of them! Yes he drinks at night to dull his pain, but I pray he stops!! Hasn't abandoned his children because he's "too stressed" or "too hurt" to care for them! He is not crumbling because the challenge is just too difficult. So, he is also very inspiring!! So many people in the worst living conditions possible still manage to take care of their families, that's truly inspiring!!!
Great documentry. Government officials should view this and realize their contributions to the society. The children of ragpickers and slum dwellers should receive free education provided by the Government.

over and over again, I watch films in which people struggling in hostile conditions to provide a better future for their children. I admire these people unreservedly.

and although I watch these types of films over and over each time, I gain a deeper appreciation for the home and possessions I take for granted. My son and i are so grateful for what we have and so sad for those less fortunate

It makes me sick to look at all these celebrates or rich people in there mansons while so many people live in places like this and the part that pierces my heart is how happy sum kids are dispite there situation and our kids that live good grow up spoiled never happy
End of the day it's education that will bring the future generation out of this plight. The kid at 51:42 summed it up. Everybody's dream is to do well in life and education is the foundation for it.

A lot of women in eastern country set themselves on fire to get themselves out of a an abusive situation. Only the most desperate women do that. I’m wondering if her setting herself on fire was an accident or not he seems to really loved her but I can’t tell if it’s love or guilt.

Yes! That's a fact. In the US ( especially in the Midwest) women are working 2 or 3 jobs mean just trying to make ends meet ,while the" grown boys" aren't contributing at all. The grown boys rather be at home. Some them try to go from house to house eating playing games not taking care of their responsibilities and want you to still have sex with them . I don't understand today's society especially these grown boys somebody help me understand like what is going on. My father wants me to eventually get married ,but I told him the man today /" grown boys "do not take care of responsibilities. I told him like how he and his generation did they took care of home .My mother didn't have to work if she didn't want to. I guess I want to get married. I do at some point

They aren't collecting rags per sey, the are collecting any form of recyclable material that can be sold onward through the chain of recycling. Plastics, glass, metals papers et cetera.
In the case of rags as you are thinking of, and as we know, India has a massive garnet industry which produces tons of scrap waste daily. RAG material typically gets sold to individuals for reprocessing into cleaning rags, rugs or other misc household fabric needs including feminine hygiene products.
The term rag-picker is a holdover from the century India spent as an English colony. The years before recycling as you are thinking when yes, individuals did collect rag or scrap fabric for the same purpose mentioned above.

Children aren't the problem it is the caste system that keeps the lowest caste from having jobs that they can rise out of poverty, afford education, clean water, good food, birth control and all the things higher castes take for granted. India needs to get rid of the caste system and they would find more people in the workforce paying taxes and contributing to society b/c nobody wants to live in poverty, starvation, sickness and squalor simply b/c govt. and society say you are a "lesser person".

Yes, very touching. She had 3 outfits and a hanger of cheap bangle bracelets but he finds them a precious reminder of her. Very sad. He needs only a little help to get through his mourning without alcohol and make good on his promise to his wife to get the children educated and out of the slum. So very little to help an entire family yet it doesn't seem he will get that help.
It would make a difference to all these people if the city made householders put sharp things into seperate containers.

Rag pickers,scanvengers , sweeperr, garbage collector etc whoever plays a role in cleaning the environment should be well educated about the ways to clean our environment and should be provided adequate gloves,mask,etc materials for cleaning at low subsided rates.women and child should be educated about personal hygiene,habits like having bath to keep away from diseases.adequate facilities like food, shelter and clothing should be provided.health check up should be provided.most of all free education should be given to all children and should be made compulsory and mandatory

There are more ragpickers in the Philippines compared to India. The good thing is in the Philippines ragpickers are never discriminated, they're considered as equals. Discrimination is uncommon in the Philippines.
brotherjohn25 ive been to dharavi, india and i can tell you, there are far more ragpickers there. and their situation is far more deplorable. im not saying they are not in the philippines its just that more than a billion population makes it many times more difficult in india. my heart goes to all of them, in india or wherever.

The woman who runs the agency in the video documentary said that the workers don't want protective clothing b/c they use their hands to "feel" for specific items and other things for protection are too hot. I assume she meant safety shoes and things to make breathing safer. Can't blame them when parts of India are some of the hottest places in the world. 2015 was a devastating heatwave in one month 2,500 people died from the heat.

How? India used to have one of the largest govt. funded, FREE, birth control programs in the world but it got shot down by the next government that took power. When you are dirt poor, any money you make (in this movie they said 3.00 a week) goes to food and water and somehow to send kids to school. Where do they get the money for birth control? Will the men use it? Will the women be permitted to use it. There are all kinds of cultural facets to birth control that we don't have in the Western world.
