Permutation Loop - Matt Garstka

  • I am offering a loop based on the permutation concept.
    matt-garstka.myshopify.com/co...
    By permutating or displacing a single rhythm 7 different times I ended up with 8 similar but slightly different rhythms. I then experimented with several different arrangements or orders of these rhythms and this is the order I found was most musical, effective, flowing/grooving and interesting. I then wrote a midi based loop to this permutation sequence so I could speed up and slow down at will. I have played to this many times at many different speeds and it was a great tool for organizing patterns and eventually spawning other patterns/variations off of those stock or original interpretations. After playing many times to these patterns I found I had greater control of the smaller details but lacked spontaneous inspiration. This is a phenomenon I often experience. It’s almost as if I’m too dialed into upholding the structure/order , cleanliness/execution and accuracy to see the bigger picture. When I have some space(days or weeks maybe even months) from these exercises, works or patterns and come back I often feel re-inspired and more free over the music. I’m not quite as accurate but this is a sacrifice I realized is worth making for my personal playing style. Maybe you’re different and tend to lean more towards spontaneity and could sacrifice some of that for a bit more order in your playing, but the point is that tools or obstacles like this can help us simultaneously become more conscious of who we are as artists/eople and develop what we can/will be.
    I know the quality of this video is not remarkable but I thought the information was worth sharing:) Comment you dig this type of nerdy education if you would like me to post more like this. I also have some clips at 121 BPM & 130 BPM. When you purchase the loop on my site it will come with 5 different audio files(5 different speed), a PDF, as well as all the midi so you can import into Logic X(or whatever DAW you use) and have full freedom to change speeds.

    There's a flow between your ghost notes and right foot that is unique to your sound. It's almost like a slight swing or something to the notes between your hand and foot, but it's such a sick stylized aspect of your playing.

    • @sihplak
      @sihplak 5 років тому +19

      Basically you take one pattern (this one starts out with a dotted quarter note, quarter note, dotted quarter note, a 3+2+3 pattern with the electric bass and bass drum) and shift it by a single beat every two measures. The entire time you're doing this you keep the snare predominantly on the same beat(s), be it 2 and 4 of each bar, or beat 1 of every other bar, or any other consistent pattern.

    • @HardcorPardcor1
      @HardcorPardcor1 5 років тому +1

      sihplak so it’s [3-2-3|3-2-3-2|3-2-3|3-2-3-2]? or [3-2-3|3-2-1|3-2-3|3-2-1]? It doesn’t seem to line up either way.

    • @lilymuu
      @lilymuu 5 років тому +7

      The simplest way I can think of to explain permutating drum patterns:
      The _pattern_ that you are playing *stays consistent,* but the _beats_ that you play it on *change.*

    • @imarioiv
      @imarioiv 5 років тому +4

      Think of it like, where the parentheses are, that's the 1 of the next measure.....123(4)12(3)41(2)34(1)234 and so on so forth. Try it with a metronome, I can't really explain it with text haha accent the beat where the next measure would start. It sounds really cool on a kit against a metronome, blows my mind every time I try it. You can move where and at what beat it will move to the next measure.

      Just take a couple of days off, it happens to all creative people. At some point you will get stuck a little and get frustrated. After those days you are gonna find the joy of playing again.

    • @drummusician
      @drummusician  5 років тому +14

      This is a tough one. Max is right that taking a day or two off can be helpful in reinvigorating you but I personally didn't do this for a long time. I always wanted to work through those lulls and stay on the path to mastery. I think taking a day off here and there is a dangerous train of thought because it promotes incremental lack of discipline. I like to use the times when I'm not inspired to work on methodical, technical, foundational materials and save the fun stuff for when I'm ready to have some fun! I say use the day off mentality very sparingly and make sure you capitalize on that time you're taking away from your practice.
