There's a flow between your ghost notes and right foot that is unique to your sound. It's almost like a slight swing or something to the notes between your hand and foot, but it's such a sick stylized aspect of your playing.
He mentioned at some of his clincs that practicing rudiments and patterns between his kick and his snare while keeping time with the right hand is more or less the secret behind his ghost notes.
This is freaking amazing. It’s so clear the mastery you have over your drum set. Every drum is an extension of your limb, and performing a stroke is as simple as lifting a finger. Not to mention the crazy understanding of rhythm. It just blows me away
Basically you take one pattern (this one starts out with a dotted quarter note, quarter note, dotted quarter note, a 3+2+3 pattern with the electric bass and bass drum) and shift it by a single beat every two measures. The entire time you're doing this you keep the snare predominantly on the same beat(s), be it 2 and 4 of each bar, or beat 1 of every other bar, or any other consistent pattern.
The simplest way I can think of to explain permutating drum patterns: The _pattern_ that you are playing *stays consistent,* but the _beats_ that you play it on *change.*
Think of it like, where the parentheses are, that's the 1 of the next measure.....123(4)12(3)41(2)34(1)234 and so on so forth. Try it with a metronome, I can't really explain it with text haha accent the beat where the next measure would start. It sounds really cool on a kit against a metronome, blows my mind every time I try it. You can move where and at what beat it will move to the next measure.
I dig this sort of material- something that mere mortals can play by starting in Amazing Slow Downer and speeding up as needed. It's really cool how much my own playing has improved since attempting some of Matt's grooves and exercises. Worth every penny. Thanks again, Matt!
Garstka lives in the Inbetween: the place between the beats: a place of legend and multiple dimensions. He is the medium by which the rest of us can only glimpse the Inbetween.
I thoroughly enjoy watching your rehearsals/techniques in a raw video as such! Very beneficial and gives us lots to explore ourselves. Thank you, Matt!
Matt! Matt for president! Id love to see your other performances of this. you have inspired me a lot and Id love to know if you had times When drums seemed really hard, making progress i mean. Times When you didnt have that much fun on the instrument. Im going through that feeling and it's a pain the ass.
Just take a couple of days off, it happens to all creative people. At some point you will get stuck a little and get frustrated. After those days you are gonna find the joy of playing again.
This is a tough one. Max is right that taking a day or two off can be helpful in reinvigorating you but I personally didn't do this for a long time. I always wanted to work through those lulls and stay on the path to mastery. I think taking a day off here and there is a dangerous train of thought because it promotes incremental lack of discipline. I like to use the times when I'm not inspired to work on methodical, technical, foundational materials and save the fun stuff for when I'm ready to have some fun! I say use the day off mentality very sparingly and make sure you capitalize on that time you're taking away from your practice.
@@KGFishyFingers that's what it takes. Look up stuff about Colaiuta. He was and is always drumming. That the ways you go the step beyond. Putting in hours and hours.
Um hell yes I dig this content! And I think I can safely speak for any drummer interested in upping their chops. Or, if they're already at this elite level, simply enjoying the spectacle of your playing. Keep on killin' it man!
Great video. It's encouraging to see that even at the highest levels, there are shared principles of creative (especially musical) exploration (repetition, slight variation, and eventually spontaneity) that still hold their usefulness.
I think it’d be great to see more of these concepts for helping build better structure and order in rhythmic patterns. I’ve listened to this video over and over. I often overthink when trying to put fills together and feel as if I don’t have enough spontaneity in my drumming
Damn... That's really impressive! And really interesting what you wrote about how these type of tools helps us become more conscious about who we are. It's like when I practice septuplets, quintuplets or loops in odd time signatures I sometimes feel like I find my own voice on the kit more and more. I would love to see more stuff like this!
I have the exact opposite problem as you Matt. Your structure and precision is that of the most impressive I've ever seen. I wish I had the discipline to hone in on that as effectively as possible and stray away from spontaneity in my playing style. Amazing performance, as usual!
Love this video, and the insight you provide in the description. I definitely have a ton of spontaneousness in my playing and need a bit more order to round myself out.
Seriously dig it all, brother...and thank you for your shared words, I really needed to hear this today. This really resonates deeply with me. Thank you, bro! 🎶💓🎶
Good shit man. Keep it up. I think you people would also be interested knowing what gear your experimenting with too, and it's not a bad way to give back to the brands that give to you too. I see those shiny cymbals :)
Rumour has it, to this day those ghost notes are still haunting the studio.
Vheissu nice!!!
Thank you for this comment that was perfect haha

You def gotta post more bro

yeah, but can you play seven nation army?
@ArizonaXR Bruh lol nothing wrong with going back to the most simple and basic beats. Don't be a douchebag drummer.

Brain.exe has crashed
tell me about it
My goodness...the class and technique just blows me away every time I watch you play.
It goes without saying that we want to see more of this, thank you for being active and reaching out to the drum community with such positivity, Matt!
New favorite drummer confirmed. Man I LOVE the way he plays.
"too dialed in on upholding structure/order". I needed to hear this. Thank you.
with a little practice he might get as good as lars
711408 little do we know, that Lars actually practices and sounds like this when he’s by himself
hahahahhahahhhaahhahahahihhihihi
I hate loving you for this...
oof
you killed me dude.
Although I rarely ever know what you're doing on the drums, you're more relatable now with the beard.
METAAAAALL MAAATTT (heavy breathing commences)
*benches drum throne*
I wish I could manage my finances as well as he plays drums.'
Or do anything as well for that matter
The two are very similar, having a deep pocket helps ;) Thanks, I'm here all week!
I love how this is just him practicing but it sounds fucking sick!
This is some next level stuff. I find myself saying this every time I come across a Matt Garstka video though.
I don't even know what that means :( my drumming skills have left the chat

sihplak so it’s [3-2-3|3-2-3-2|3-2-3|3-2-3-2]? or [3-2-3|3-2-1|3-2-3|3-2-1]? It doesn’t seem to line up either way.

I dig this type of nerdy education
definitely such a valuable insight in the video description! That made me subscribe :)
i watched this twice and got chills both times

Totally appreciate that you displayed chops in slow form (in a sense) and left those sixteenth note triplets till the very end. Style and discipline.

When you switch to the ride and your right arm just hangs for a minute was pretty rad. You're absolutely one of the best drummers out there today.

I would love more awesome educational content such as this! Thank you, and wonderful job.
Everybody complained the cymbals were too dry. Now what do you think?
I think AT LAST.
I like that sounds this way
The ride is a bit washy but definitely like the rest
Jeremy Dunbar Meinl cymbals can never be too dry, but Matt could play trash can lids and they’d sound fantastic so whatever

I used to play that as an opening exercise when didn't want to play something difficult - great starting stuff for rookies:)

Hmm very interesting nice of you to share also
