This is the bike I'm actually looking at to buy next. I currently have a mini-downhill bike but need an XC for the trails I ride in my area. Nice to know this bike is reliable and great.
Oh yeah it is perfect for what you want to do with it. And also crazy fun 😁
Hi there. Amazing review mate! I've already suscribed buddy! Stay safe!
Thanks David! I appreciate it man! Ride on!
@@BlackWaterCyclist Yeah! Stay safe! Stay healthy! :-)
@@BlackWaterCyclist Feel free to drop a comment on my videos. I'm kind of new over here! haha. Thanks for your support :-)
Hello, i saw the video of the giant, great bike ! I have the same bike.
I want to ask you to put the sram tramsmition, they say I need to buy another dropout that works with sram, You have any idea where I could buy, the giant dropout for a sram tramsmition.
Thanks for your help
Hi Mario, you shouldn't have to change anything for the Sram Drivetrain. It could be the freehub that they are saying you need to change. Sram uses the XD driver while Shimano uses the original HG freehub. As far as the rear drop outs, they are 148x12 which is what shimano and sram are compatible with. If you want to message me on Instagram, you can send me pics there and I can try to help you find what you need.
@@BlackWaterCyclist thank you very much, I appreciate it.
Yes, I'll folow you on Instagram I'll send you the pictures👍
reviews on your gravel shoes and how do you set it up?
Hi Reynard, would you like me to do a video on my shoes I am wearing in this video? I can throw one together pretty quickly.
@@BlackWaterCyclist Yes, and how do you set your cleats? Appreciate it.
@@BlackWaterCyclist was waiting for this one. Thanks dude
Hello, how tall are you? I am 5.8 (1.78m) and I found an Anthem 29 L size at a very low cost, I apreciate your opinion.
Hi Carlos, I am 6.2 and honestly should have gone with the XL size instead of the Large with my riding position and style. You could maybe make a Large work. Giant recommends a medium for you and a Large for people 5'10-6'2 but if you ride more forward in the wheelbase (saddle further forward), then a Large could possibly work.
@@BlackWaterCyclist Thanks for your answer. The issue is the M costs USD2.596, while L costs 1.600 both new in the same reference. Do you think it's worth the difference?
@@calosles I know many people say do not save $ by going with the wrong size bike but honestly, I would try it, especially if you are close to the next size up.
Im 5'10 and shrinking, do you think a Med would be best for me? Also, the lock out lever... does it affect both front and rear at same time?
Yes the medium will be perfect for you and give you more room to shrink. Yes the one lever operates both front and rear at the same time.
I see all these hardcore XC bikes with a huge saddle to bar drop or at least the saddle slightly higher than the handlebars, however with my entry level hardtail with 100mm of travel, which is the right size for me according to the manufacturer, the right saddle height for me is still a bit lower than the handlebars, even with the stem fully slammed and -7 degrees. I'm fairly short at 5'7" but I thought the bike would just scale down, not have such a different geometry. Do I just have a short inseam for my height or am I missing something?
Well it could be a few things but the issue with a smaller frame is that it is still running a 29 inch wheel with a 29 inch fork so in relation to everything else, the front is going to naturally be taller. Where I am on an XL so in relation to the fork and wheel, my butt is way higher. It could also be if you have handlebars with a rise on it. I have actually gone to a higher handlebar position since I have made this video.
@@BlackWaterCyclist Thanks for the explanation, it makes sense. Before buying I was unsure if I should get the smaller size since I'm on the shorter end of the medium, but for my bike the size S comes with a weird curved top tube and 27.5 wheels which I didn't want at the time. I'm happy with my setup overall but when and if I get a more serious bike I might look for a good 27.5 XC rig that fits me better. Thanks.
@@andreabotti99 Honestly I would try to stay on 29 wheels if you are wanting to race or go for longer distances. 29 has been proven to be a faster platform when it comes to speed. All the females in XC racing use 29 wheels, even if they are on a very small bike. Now if you just want something more playful, then go with a 27.5 bike. I hope that helps.
@@BlackWaterCyclist Thanks for the info, I'll definitely keep this in mind when I eventually get a new bike, though I just spent quite a bit upgrading my whole drivetrain from a 3x7 to a 1x11 and so I'll probably keep this one for a bit longer. It's still comfortable, I was just unsure why my bike looked so different compared to yours but it probably comes down to being a much smaller frame but with the same wheels and fork like you said. Cheers.
Did you install the sram xx1-11 speed, or did it come stock with the bike?
Hi Eiffelpowerr, thanks for watching. I actually installed everything myself. I found a good deal on a lightly used frame and built it up myself. Everything stock now comes with 12 speed. I'm in Florida which doesn't have the climbing that warrants a large 50t cog in the rear. I have since upgraded to 12 speed for when I do travel to the mountains though.
Black Water Cyclist aight, thanks! 🙌🏻
As an Anthem 29 mk1 owner, how different do these bikes feel , why you said mk1 geometry is crap ?
Is this because of the long chainstays only?
Generally I kinda agree with you ,I feel there is something weird in the riding position and geometry but I want to see others opinions ,maybe its just me . I'm 1.78 , 5'10 riding. Cheers
Hi Jimded! Great question. The first generation had a long chainstay and a short front end and a steep head tube angle. So your weight was way more in the front of the wheelbase which tended to cause the front wheel to be over weighted which in turn caused it to be twitchy and more prone to go over the bars. I haven't seen a 29er with longer chainstays than the first anthem 29. I loved it in its time, but that was when everyone was doing steep head tube angles and long chainstays and we didn't know better. While everyone else progressed their 29ers, giant ditched it for the 27.5 models until the newer 2018 model.
Very well explained, you are very right, at least I know I'm not the only one have noticed these characteristics, thanks for your answer.
What's your opinion for head tube angle kits? I guess 1-1.5 degrees won't be bad idea.
Sorry for the delay on your last question. It disappeared in my notifications. I would definitely put an Angle Kit on it. I am not sure if you saw my video on the Anthem with a 2 degree angle headset but definitely check it out if you haven't yet. ua-cam.com/video/ZU5OY2nLeuA/v-deo.html
What XC race rocket are you riding now?

Im looking at a used 2013 giant anthem, but you say they are "crap"... can you elaborate on why they are bad? In what way?
Great Question, the first gen Anthem 29 was very much old school 29 geometry. When they first developed 29ers, they were comparing them to the 26 inch bikes which were much more nimble. So to make clearance for the larger wheels/tires, they just made the chainstays longer. The first gen Anthem had a chainstay length of 18.2 inches/463mm while the current Anthem is 17.2/438mm. The first gen Anthem had the longest chainstays of any companies 29 bikes. Most were around 17.5-17.8 inches. Obviously the long rear end made the bike handle slower so to counter this, they put a really steep headtube angles on the 1st gen, 72.5 degrees where todays bike is 69 degrees and many others out there have gone down to 67 degrees. Also the Reach was shorter so essentially you are sitting way farther forward in the wheelbase on the first gen, which over weights the front end and causes the front wheel to be super sketchy and you do not get any warning when the front wheel starts to loose traction. Also the rear end is so long, it is like pulling a trailer through the trails and makes it harder to make tighter turns. Also it is harder to pull the front end up to get over obstacles like roots and rocks. I hope this makes sense.
Hi, how tall are you? Which frame size would you recommend to a 5'10 guy with 34" inseam?
Hi Chris, I would say a Large for you. I am 6'2 and have since switched to an XL which I will do a video on in the future. You do have a long inseam for 5'10 so just make sure the 19 inch seat tube length will be long enough for your current saddle height.
@@BlackWaterCyclist Thank you very much for fast and comprehensive answer! :) Can't wait for the video! :)
@@BlackWaterCyclist Hi - I'm kind of in the same boat, except just over 6' with 35" inseam... what's your inseam length?- in the video it looks like the seatpost is really high/ aggressive riding position, so maybe an xl is better for me?
@@petermason7566 yeah I would definitely go XL for you. I actually switched up to an XL and it is much better.
@@BlackWaterCyclist Thanks!

Great video thank you. Can you tell us what glasses you use. 3.00
Thank you for watching! I am using Spy Flynn glasses in this video. They have great coverage and not too bad looking.
Where are you testing this bike?
Hi Clark, The singletrack is out at the University of West Florida Trail system. The gravel in the video is some nice roads near my house. Did you not recognize them? Camera may make them look different.
Thanks! Enjoying your videos!!
is the seat tube dropper compatible ?
Hi Max, not the one I was using but any 27.2 seat post diameter dropper post will work. When they first released this, there were hardly any 27.2 droppers but now there are several options.
@@BlackWaterCyclist Thanks! Now just have to wait until bikes are back in stock. Love the videos!
Did you score a warranty Anthem from from Ebay or something then build it up with old parts?
Hi John, I got it off Facebook. The seller was willing to part with the frameset instead of selling the bike complete. No warranty issues here.
How much travel on the front?
100mm up front.
Do you live by UWF?
Hi Kenneth, yes I'm not too far from there. About a 35 minute drive. Are you in Foley area?
I live in daphne currently but we’re buying a house 2 miles from UWF in the next month. Maybe we’ll be able to ride together soon.
That is great! Have you looked into PORC (Pensacola Off-road Cyclist)? We actually have dirty duros each month where it's like a time trial on some sections of trails just to test yourself. It is on Strava so it isn't an event so you can just go when you have time. Did you get a Giant Contend AR?
@@BlackWaterCyclist I follow porc on Strava and I think Facebook. Dirty duos sounds awesome. And yes I just got a contend ar.
Mucho cable en la parte del amortiguador
It looks like Gainesville
Yeah it is Florida so very similar. I am up in the Panhandle so a little different but not much.
cool. any good trails over there? I'm in Jacksonville. I ride Hanna park alot. we also ride Gainesville and Ocala.
Turned off at "2- niner".
Hi Tony, is there something offensive about using the description "2-niner" or were you looking for the 27.5 review?
