    Hey Clint, Im a roadie who bought my first FS MB two years ago, a 2016 Giant Anthem Advanced SX. Since then I've made it a bit more "trailish" by replacing the Rockshox Revelation 120mm to a Pike, 130mm. I also went with beefier 2.35" Hans Dampf (F) and Nobby Nic (R), with a Fox Transfer dropper post. This thing rocks! The bike still has the nimbleness of an XC bike with the capabilities of a modest trail bike. Love this thing!

    I managed to ride one of these over the weekend. Let me just say in 30+ years of riding it was maybe the best bike I've ever touched. It was tempting to sell a kidney to buy one. Not only was it insanely light and responsive, it had a great middle ground between being racing nimble, but still not overly aggressive. I was also astounded at how well the suspension worked.
    Having said that, the real sweet spot in the Anthem line-up really is the Anthem Advanced Pro 1, at "only" $5,000. Too bad there's no way I can sell a half a kidney.

    BLING!! I have one of those "boats" Clint; Anthem X29er. I agree, challenging to maneuver in very twisty singletrack, but climbs like a goat and super stable descending. Looking forward to the ride review.

    Would be curious to know if you think the frame/fork will accept 2.3” tires, Clint.
    Not something one would typically do on an XC rocket....but we have a lot of rocks in Arizona. Trails that don’t necessarily require ‘trail’ bike, but sometimes a little wider tire on a lighter XC style bike can be nice.

  • @McFershns

    Hi Clint,
    could you talk about some of the differences between the "Anthem 29" and the "Anthem" 2018 with 27.5"? What do you think which bike is best for which terrain / riding style?
    Do you think they will continue the "Anthem"? Since I see them advertise (only) the 29 everywhere and the 27.5 2018 isn't even available here in Germany yet.

    • @ClintGibbs
      @ClintGibbs  6 років тому +1

      +Dirk Schubert Anthem 27.5 is now a trail bike and Anthem 29 is XC. Just depends on what your riding needs are.

    • @PhilAndersonOutside
      @PhilAndersonOutside 6 років тому

      As to the 2018 Anthem. You would need to look at their site closely. For the most part, the Anthems are now all XC bikes, with "endurance" geometry for the most part, which is a trend.
      Adding to the confusion, if you look at the US site, versus other sites, you'll see some 27.5 Anthems that Giant puts in their "Trail" category, but calls it a "XC and Trail Machine". So you tell me what it is!?!
      www.giant-bicycles.com/ca/anthem-2
      As to climbing, this bike is so light, and so responsive, it would have to climb like a mountain goat. The larger wheel on a 29er allows for greater rolling (though not acceleration) over almost all terrain, including climbs.
      Put another way, weight savings by going for a 27.5 over a 29er would be negligible, and offset by the benefits of a larger wheel. How you ride, where you ride, and perhaps your height/inseam and how the bike feels to you, should determine that.

    Hi Clint,
    Love your videos! They are very in depth and I enjoy watching them from over here in NZ. One question: how do you find the cornering in this bike vs the giant trance? I currently have a trance and am wondering about changing to this bike. Regards

    • @ClintGibbs
      @ClintGibbs  6 років тому

      +Eric the Plumber The Anthem simply cuts into a corner a lot quicker than a trance. It's like a sports car versus a regular sedan. That's the best analogy I can use.

  • @robwasnj

    Have all the Anthem 29ers had those 18" chainstays up until this year? My cycling partner has a carbon Anthem 29er that's maybe 2 years old, he doesn't seem to have any issues with that but now I'm really curious. I only rode his bike a few times because it's the wrong size (medium) but it felt crazy light and sketchy compared to the bike I'm used to (Pivot 429C).

    • @andypaul999
      @andypaul999 6 років тому +1

      robwas Its not as bad as some people make out, in fact on marathon courses i find the anthem to be superb esp on high speed downhills, where you notice the long chainstays is low speed maneuverability where the longer turning circle is noticable. Most people use the Anthem for longer races in my experience anyway where the longer stays are not as important as comfort, which the previous Anthem has in droves

    Clint, I've always wondered why xc bikes have higher top tubes. Why is that? The Trance for example has a more low slung tt to give you room to move around. Not sure why you wouldn't want that on an xc bike too.

    Hey Clint. Great video man. I am a cross country rider looking for a full suspension bike and I really, really, like the new Giant Anthems. For my budget I can maybe get a used Advance Pro 1 or a brand new Anthem 29er1 aluminum. Both have comparable components but naturally the aluminum is the better value. I like the aluminum but I am just a little concerned the extra flex may hurt me on the climbs. What do you think? Im not that concerned about the weight difference, which for me, is negligible.

    • @ClintGibbs
      @ClintGibbs  5 років тому

      Giants alluminum is actually pretty stiff. I rode and aluminum anthem for several years. To me wheels make a bigger difference. Perhaps you can get the aluminum one and upgrade to carbon rims down the road.

    Hi Clint. Big fan here. Learned a ton from your videos. I'm just about to purchase an Anthem 27.5. I'll most likely go with an Alum version to keep the cost down. From watching your videos, I was under the impression that an Anthem 2 27.5 would weigh about 24-26lbs. You have a video from 2013 showing 23.08 for your Anthem. HOWEVER, I visited a shop today and asked them to weigh their Anthem 2 and it showed 29lbs 10oz!!! I'm really bummed that it's that heavy. I was hoping to be under 25. Any thoughts? Maybe that 11-46 cassette and SLX components are adding that much weight? I know the dropper adds a bit but probably not more than .5lbs. Any advice would be appreciated. I was actually considering getting the 3 and then swapping components as I go to lighten it.

    • @ClintGibbs
      @ClintGibbs  6 років тому

      +Sean Saunders today's Anthem 27.5 is set up more like a trail bike so it's going to be heavier. The best way to lighten it up is with the wheel set. So perhaps get the bike now and save up for a lightweight cross-country wheelset. Carbon wheels would make a dramatic difference in the way the bike rides.

    • @seansaunders1517
      @seansaunders1517 6 років тому

      Clint Gibbs thanks for getting back to me so quickly. I was thinking the same but still can't figure out the 5lb or more discrepancy. Stans valor's would only save me 1lb as compared to the stock alum. Maybe the new 130 fork is heavy. I think it had me maxxis forekasters on it. Not sure about their weight. I'll keep researching. Thanks

    I’ve been looking at some of the Trance lower end models, how do the Suntour forks compare to Rockshox Forks? I’m currently running Rockshox Revelation and don’t want to downgrade because it is an expensive item to upgrade-what’s your experience of the Suntour Forks?

    • @ClintGibbs

      +Pricey 78 I have no first-hand experience with Suntour forks so I can't really give an opinion. I'm a fox guy so that's where most of my experience have been. I've had several RockShox Forks in the past but they have not been as reliable as Fox.

      Giant does it on their bikes. Its actually a crap design, as previously mentioned. I have this on my Giant TCX cyclocross bike, and they are a pain in the ass. Very hard to use, the seatpost is in the way when screwing, and the seatpost always slides down after bumpy terrain, even with carbon grease. Plus, the seatpost is D shaped, you can't put in any other seapost just the ones from Giant...

    When I see folks ready to spend 8500 use on a bike that has the same production cost and only fairly lighter than a 2k Alluminium Anthem, I know I have a great chance of becoming a billionaire someday because all you have to do is just have anything to sell and convince the gullible masses it's better than the previous one and off they go selling their organs to get one so they can show it off. That low self-esteem among most cyclists is on fleek!

  • @wodstalker2819
    @wodstalker2819 6 років тому +1

    What a stupid idea.... Pull the cable to unlock the suspensions. Have a cable failure on the trail and the whole ride is f*cked up ! I really dont get why they dont stick to the good old "pull to lock" system... Works as good and if fails you will still have some suspension ! Same goes for rockshox and their poplock

    • @leobao2560
      @leobao2560 6 років тому +4

      sorry, but you also pull cables to shift derailleurs, you pull cables to activate the dropper post mechanism, so why wouldn't you pull cables to unlock the suspension?

    • @amandapeine6745
      @amandapeine6745 6 років тому

      Any cable failure will mess up your ride. Does it happen often? It shouldn't.

    • @wodstalker2819
      @wodstalker2819 6 років тому

      For derailleurs you can't do otherwise, its just the only way it works (excluding that old shimano one). For droppers you have to find a way to unlock it...And i dont see any other way that a cable (or fluid for the reverb) to do so. For lockouts, we HAD a perfectly working system and if it failed, well you can still do without locked suspensions... The problem for me there is not that it is cable actuated, it is that they decided to change to something that is more likely to fail on the trail. (btw simple math : you spend usually more time not locked out which means with this system cable is most of the time stretched and not in resting position... More tension and for longer : doesnt it means more likely to fail ?)
      Any cable failure will mess up a ride, i agree... But at worse if derailleur cable snaps you can make it SS and keep going untill home or go downhill no problem... Here try to go downhill with locked suspensions :DD
