Hi could you go through setting up the firewall and using ClamAV (anti-malware). I've got an Asustor but could not get these settings setup? ClamAV wont update or hangs etc. Thanks

I am looking at the Asustor AS6704T 4-bay NAS as an upgrade to my Synology 2-bay. I will have to buy two additional Seagate Exos 16TB drives for RAID-6, I already have a new spare WD Black 1TB NVMe for cache. The Asustor also has 2.5Gbe which my main three computers also have, so that will boost write performance. I use the NAS strictly as one of four system backups.

Did you end up upgrading your RAM...or would you recommend that step or not necessary? Also, I was looking at getting 2 of the Seagate Exos X20 ST20000NM002D 512E/4KN SAS 12Gb/s 20TB 7200RPM 256MB Enterprise Hard Drive, but didn't see it on Asustor's table...I'm a rookie, but for the price and what it appears the SAS can do vs. the SATA, it seems worth it...? Thanks for the informative video and any input for this noob!

Not sure you will read this but this video is 2 years old and u mention doing a video on tips on how to use the NAS. I cant easily find it. You should make q playlist of all your NAS Videos since those have more longevity than reviewing some stuff and its hard to find it. Either way, This video was great. Thanks.

I know that M.2 SSD is possible to use as normal storage instead of cache. But I'm not able to found if it is possible to use it also for ADM system itself. I would like to have the system and most used data on SSD to prevent spin-up HDD disk all the time and use it as long-term backup storage.

How do you rate this compared to the popular Synology NAS range? I'm super new to this all but it seems this has the faster 2.5 gbps lan connections but people say the software with the Synology is better.

I know this kinda of old, and my AS6604T has been running great. I was going to upgrade my 12tb drives to 20's. I disabled the cache (SSD's), then shut down. Pulled drive 1 and installed the 1st 20tb drive. Figured ok, let the snapshot do it's job. I'm running RAID5 BTW. When it was done restoring, 1 day later, got error that it couldn't access the drive. Ok, shut down, pulled all 4 drives, put in all 4 20's. Let it sync but decide when it was done, to shut down, pull them out and put the ORIG 4 drives back in place. Yes, they were ALL numbered so I put them back in order. Now, I'm getting errors when I log into the ADM, saying the drives have ZERO space, and can't access. WTH. I've rebooted it a few times, removed, re-inserted. I do have a full backup of all my data but though RAID 5 is suppose to be hotswapable, something went south with my system and now, I can't even access the orig drives. Searching for answers, I ended up here.
Great video. I'm going to review it and see if it shines any light as to what my issue might be and how to fix it without starting from zero and restoring all my data, all 30TB it.
What I'm seeing in Storage Manager under Volume is, Volume 1 / RAID 5 / Inaccessible. Thought your video is great, I've seen elsewhere what swapping out drives does not go as smooth as IT SHOULD. /smh

Hey THX for this and that you do all that work for your Community👌 ! I am really interested how this NAS will perform. And one big Question: If i can remember correctly you have the MSI prestige X570 Motherboard with 10G Lan, for what reason you want take a 10g Nas ? Will you connect the 2x2,5G to get out 5G (link aggregation) is it necessary to have a switch for that ? Did you decided to get the Lockerstore or came Asustor up to you and wanted you to test it ? Is it best bang for buck ? Have to be all drives the same (size and brand) or can they be Mixed (Bsp: 2x12GB and 2x4GB ? And one last Question: If you have 2,5G will there be a bottleneck without the NVME`s ? That are many questions in my shaky english :) I am excited on the upcoming videos ... Great Work Lauri thanks a lot !!!!👍👏

Does the hardware limit 2.5 aggregated, 5000/5000?
Why did you you go raid 5 instead of 10 as a rebuild of raid 5 is less likely to succeed.
You also said the NIC limits the the speed, but your running at half speed without aggregating them. With the nvme as a cache it'd be so much faster than spinning rust, it it can cache write as well

Thanks for the video! It would be nice to also see how well this NAS can handle reading video files /editing videos stored directly on NAS, especially since you have those fast NVMe drives and Asustor allows to use those as storage... unlike Synology NAS, where you can only use those as cache.

I'm getting ready to build a PC for video editing and your videos have been the most informative resource I've found. Can you do a video on USB4.0 for video editors? As far as I can tell, USB4.0 is technically out there somewhere, but I can't find any motherboards that have USB4 ports built in. I usually edit off of an external drive because I want to be able to go back and forth between laptop and desktop, and from what I can tell, NVME drives have transfer speeds higher than 20Gbps, so the 40Gbps speed of USB4 could come in handy. My questions are: should I wait until I can get a motherboard that includes USB4, or can I just buy a USB4 card later on and attach it to whatever motherboard I get? Do I have to buy a certain kind of CPU to take full advantage of USB4? Are there any other components that need to be compatible? Is it even going to make a difference for editing off of an external nvme ssd? I've had trouble getting these questions answered just by googling, so I figured I'd ask you. Thanks!

@@theTechNotice Thanks! And do you know if any of the other components have to be compatible (cpu, etc?) or does it not matter? I'm new to this PC building thing, so sorry if that's a stupid question.

Well, that was very interesting and complete. Thank you very much for the clear explanations. I may go with that solution, but with 4x 8TB HDD, they are way cheaper when it comes to price/TB. Also, I am not sure to see the point of having the NVME SSD if you can't have faster speed than with the HDD ?
Also, why a NAS and not a DAS in your use case ?
Very excited about your next videos about this topic ;)

      Good questions good questions!
The nvme is definitely not necessary, but has a faster random read/write so if you have a lot of smaller files on it that you use often like, LUTs, or other presets or documents then the read speed will be faster on the nvme if that makes sense :)

The bottleneck from what I could see was from 1 PC to another - is the switch in between. If the Asustor and your Computer both had 2.5 Gbps throughput and the switch was only 1 Gbps - then thats your bottleneck, not the hard drives.

Wow the two ports on the back should go to your router only! that's for link aggregation to speed up transfers, you're wasting bandwidth by connecting the nas to your computer, you don't need to at all, just access it through your router. I did not learn much from your video, I would suggest you have more info and more knowledge of the product before creating a how to video that looks like you're stumbling through it and finding out things about it's capability during your video.
