Some stuff to note about this that some people might miss:
- it wasn't made to replace smartphones or standalone cameras anyways. The idea was to give better images and more res to work with in comparison to the previous camera/sensor module, which basically used a cheap webcam sensor;
- if you don't intend to code anything with it, right now it's probably useless. Much like buying a devboard wthout intention to develop something with it, these things are for tinkerers and development;
- it's not that the sensor is bad, the comparison just shows how much pre-processing smartphones do these days. Problems with reds and magenta, low light, and others pointed out are inherent problems of smartphone sized sensors... more specifically, these Sony IMX sensors. What happened over the years is that very smart corrections were made on the software side. So you know, when you get a sensor that captures and spits out images without much processing, this is probably closer to what you'd get.
So, who is this for? This probably goes more towards tinkerers and people working with development of image recognition software, as shown in video. Which is pretty awesome given limited options developers have for direct access to high res image output. For a very long time, the best you got was probably webcams or capture cards. You see, smartphones and standalone cameras have this entire layer before you get to raw data that sometimes just gets in the way.
And if development catches on with this Pi kit, some pretty interesting stuff might be coming out from this. We'll see...
Do you know by any chance if this camera has a rolling or global shutter?
For robotics neither color nor resolution matter.
This was exactly what I was thinking watching the video, why would you compare a module for a development board that is designed so you can make your own software with products that have entire engineering and development teams working on perfecting image quality and ease of use. Of course it won't be as usable as a gopro out of the box, it is literally just a module, you need to do the extra work for it
How does it compare against the camera module v2?(8 megapixels)
Im using the old camera module for a phogrammetric scanner, thinking in upgrading the optics.
Would love a side by side comparision of the photos.
@@tmicecave It's rolling rolling rolling... If you think you can get a global shutter camera at this resolution for this price, keep on dreaming.

the fact that they actually had Brandon compare this to an actual consumer camera and the tone of this video seem to point to them not understanding this distinction at all. they reviewed a part for creators to use in custom built devices as if it was a consumer point and shoot camera, without any sort of humor or irony about the insanity of the comparison....
Now time for me to make it a webcam ;)
And it works great for that! Beating the quality of a webcam is not exactly difficult ;-)
I was thinking the same thing. I personally don't know of any small package, cheap good quality webcams that I can run a server from AND PuTTY/SSH into. I really love the idea behind it.
I'm doing this right now! Didn't like tying up my A7iii for Zoom calls, saw this and decided to give it a go. It's been a fantastic learning experience. Next step is to dust off my Python knowledge and make a server I can send commands to so I can remote control the thing and not need the command line options at all. Next step after that is ditching the capture card and seeing what I can do with streaming the video over the network.
P.S. Has anyone noticed these C/CS lenses are great for macro? I have 4 different ones now and every single one of them can be made to focus right up to the front element. Wild!
@@Pyroja Capture card? Stream over network? With a Pi Zero you can make it act like a UVC-compliant webcam. Powered over the USB cable and as low latency as you'd expect from a webcam (which is much lower than a network stream) :-D

Microsoft: The departure lounge is filled with people in nice suits telling you how great it will be when the plane arrives.
Apple: Everyone looks the same with friendly smiles. At 30,000 feet they hold up a bomb and ask: "OK to reboot?"
UNIX: Everyone arrives at the airport with a part to the plane. They assemble it on the airfield then get in it and take off.
Yep, that last one is me.
I'm imagining hundreds of people flash mobbing an airport, each trying to get thought security holding a piece of an airplane. The person bringing the overhead bin can't get though because the overhead bin is too big to fit in an overhead bin.

0:19 -- Hey Vsauce! Michael here.
I may be the only one who thinks so, but i really think that Pi's camera looks much better then the Pixel 4... Yes, the Pixel has a muuch highter dynamic range, possibly better color accuracy, but... I don't know... I'm one of those who prefer good old ARRI (with 1080p sensor) to new RED cameras just for color science only...
RED camera has left the chat
This camera is perfect for robotics applications. I currently work with the old raspberry pi cam's for my applications and I think this could make a brilliant improvement to the accuracy I can get for computer vision applications
This would be useful for say, insanely specific photography workflows as well, where you are looking for high control and customisability which would be impossible or expensive on a proper consumer camera. E.g. you could couple this with a raspberry pi based motion control system (which you can build out of servos) to get a highly customisable and programmable timelapse camera at a much cheaper cost than normal cameras. Or you could make a stop motion rig that moves a model and takes pictures for much cheaper than is usually possible.
When you’re so early the title says “builring”
Building your own camera. Stupid or genius?
Weird genius
This video would have been better if Linus didn't know everything about this product.
Pi Foundation: We're putting the power in your hands.
Me: Yessss!!!
Pi Foundation: So now it's up to you.
Me: Wait, WHAT?
I love the Pi Foundation's goals but also I'm lazy, so I guess I'll stick to watching other ppl tinker on YT.
Still pretty cool that you can build your own camera with a sensor better than most digital cameras before about 2012. Imagine what kind of stuff kids will be able to build with 3D printers in 10 years.
I got my first Raspberry Pi late last year, a Pi 4 with 4GB RAM and it’s a great little device. I have it setup to run complex home automations and as a local file server. Kinda want to try using it as a web server. I also want to buy this camera module even though I can’t think of anything to use it for.
One of my hobbies since my young teens as been writing image processing extensions/software so writing my own piece of front end software for this to appear like a somewhat modern camera firmware mixed with using some knobs/dials and a few buttons with GPIO pins. For someone like me that loves this kind of stuff it's a step in the right direction. My project was basically just a design drawing back from the old TSLR medium format cameras. Obviously mine is a single lens, but the tall box design with a waist level view finder is essentially the same. I also opted to go with a Tamron 25mm f/1.6 lens along with a selection of vintage c-mount cine lenses over a CCTV lens. I already had them all from collecting prior and use them on both a Pentax Q7 and Olympus OM-D MK II (I shoot primarily on medium format film with either a Pentax 67, Mamiya RB67/RZ67, Mamiya C330, or a Zeiss Super Ikonta among many others so I don't really see the point in investing money into a full frame mirrorless...I spend enough on my film cameras as-is lol) and they all give fairly good images, not Leica quality or something but interesting nonetheless.

The title makes sense after Linus said “what do words mean”
look at Dennis just trying to get in the building. So entertaining eh?
Just write a script/executable to trigger on some button : P And it's hella good for what things Raspberry Pi is used, yeap. I don't know why dudes even went to compare it with Pixel and Apple, was kinda dumb, not to say Pixel has dedicated PixelCore on board and all. If you really had to review it, this is not how it should have been done imo. Just a suggestion, though I do know channel caters to more casual audience, but that just didn't do it the justice. If you use Raspberry Pi, and complain there's no shutter button, I don't know why you bought Pi at first place, because you probably will be glad that there's nothing like that if you actually use Pi much. Not to say, rest of options in market for tinkerers is way much advanced and hard to use, and has other restrictions.
That's whay should've been talked about
"What do words mean", Linus said, as he dropped me into an existential crisis.
TheMrminimario your first congrats
Video conclusion in one sentence: Basically, it's a better version of webcam but without ui
The video really missed the point. These types of things aren't designed to be used as content creation cameras or webcams. This is exactly what you want for programmers working on computer vision projects, or research where python code is running off of a dedicated raspberry pi and the want to add some sort of optical component to detect something. Comparing it to a phone does it a dis-service, as you wouldn't tape your phone to the inside of a a research lab and then say "oh well, I guess I just don't have a phone anymore".
@@dylbarton it can be used for that, though. It's a matter what you want to work with it. I don't think it's impossible if someone builds a better application that spits out better processed image compared to what the existing one does, you get RAW after all which should contain all necessary information to improve the image, practically building a usable point and shoot camera. Or researching a better way to implement EIS for a smoother video recording experience (whose algorithm can then be taken and implemented in smartphones). As RPi wants you to think "the limit is your imagination" (although to be fair the hardware is still the actual limit).
Or they can just use it as a DIY monitoring aystem for robotics or CCTV. Because you know, RPI is more like small electronic brain that has enough power to drive whatever the tinkerers want to, as long as it within the capability of the system. Rather than a system to be used for system RnD and complex simulation in lab
