GE Ultrafast Washer Dryer Combo: How to Access & Remove Heat Pump System

- Although this unit is new on the market and its unlikely that anyone will need to reference it for some time, here are the steps needed to access the heat pump system, remove the cover, then remove & replace the entire assembly as a package.
his took a few days to film (hence the change of clothes) just because I wanted to be careful, but it should show you some of the inner workings of all the systems that go into the GE Ultrafast 2 in 1 Washer Dryer Combo, which uses its unique and proprietary heat pump system to get clothes dried faster than a traditional combo machine.
(I didn't have any errors after doing this, thank God, so if it worked for me, it'll work for you!)

@@bensappliancesandjunkPro tip: a hose pick (or a flat o-ring pick) will make short work of removing stuck hoses, plus they're blunt so they're less likely to damage things than a screwdriver. Vessel even makes a hose pick shaped like a J for tight spaces.
I live in Puerto Rico and the machine work great. You need to learn how to used. We are 3 in the house, and we got all are laundry done on two wash. The first 3 wash we was having problems but after we watch some videos we learn a was ours mistakes. So now the we learn how to used it now we loved.

THANK YOU for making this video !!!! I've been interested in this unit ever since it was announced, and purchased one last June when it was released. I knew going in the heat exchanger would be a weak point (clogging with lint over time) and so in my head have been visualizing the internal design. And I was hoping GE designed it so the heat exchanger would be easy to access and clean. Well.....based on your teardown maybe not so much. But at least I got to see all the internal details of this awesome machine. Yes the heat exchanger is going to be a problem in the long run....hopefully V2.0 will solve this via automated water jet cleaning, mega-filters, or something. For this version, I will just get in there and clean it out periodically. But most consumers won't do that so it is in GE's best interest to figure out a "home remedy" pronto ! And yes, I know about the hack for sealing up the black filter but am not a fan (yet).....if the tape fails over time that could cause some issues downstream. I feel GE did a pretty decent job with the filter system.....bottom line is no matter what you do that heat exchanger is going to get lint on it over time ! One last thiing....have you done a video on the water pump "filter" ? I don't recall any cleaning being mentioned in the manual but the other day my unit wasn't drying because the filter was 100% clogged with fuzz/lint and not allowing water to drain out from the tub. Easy fast fix but since I don't have the stand sort of a pain.......I hope everyone who owns this machine is aware they gotta clean that filter out every now and then. GE should add a reminder into the firmware !

Moving parts will always fail, so even in the future, manufacturers should absolutely still design with a focus on the machine's ability to be maintainenced.
This one isn't bad, but I only assume it's going to get better.

@@gnewt75I've had it for a month. it's pretty impressive and the extra space after getting rid of the dryer is nice. The only con I would say is that it dries almost too well and the clothes feel kind of crunchy. we've played around with using the eco mode and that seems to do a pretty good job.

I have considered buying one of these units and I have to admit that the lint/heat pump coil problem is a deal breaker. The fins on the heat pump are too fragile and bend easy and just makes things even worse. They need to make the coils more accessible and easier to remove so they can be hosed out or have compressed air used on them. This unit, while clever, is not worth the price considering the near term future problems keeping the coils clean.

thanks! this is interesting for me. only now I've realized the hot and cold radiators are next to each other and it looks more beefy than a 5000 BTU air conditioner. It appears GE can easily add a dehumidifier function for room dehumidification with a limited runtime per day. It's a quirky feature but then consider that this machine is best for small homes like a condo or apartment which would want a multiple function appliance.

Cleaning that condenser coil is going to be a must. I promise it's going to get full of lint and start smelling like mildew. GE will probably have some auto-type kit that has a long tube to feed foam cleaner, but that's not going to remove lint well. Over-all this looks like a PITA to service vs a standard front load washer.

Great video detailing the tear down process here. I’m curious if you have explored the tear down effort to reverse the door orientation? We recently purchased the unit to fit into a small space, but were hoping to open the door to the right rather than the left. The door sensor harness was only ran down the right rather than both sides like other models have done. I’m wondering if it’s worth the effort to rerun the harness to be able to switch the door orientation.

just out of curioisty, could you rig the condensate tube to collect the "distilled" water for various purposes? I couldnt tell much about the drain situation from the video.
I tried using a delicate drywr lint brush to clean the coils and thankfully noticed how easily they bend before too many indented. Honestly short of taking this all the way apart, I think an air compressor and blowing all of it out might be the best maintenance short of this.
I was cleaning my dryer filter area and the rag fall into the the hall and I heard the sound under the drum, do you know if l can access to take it out without do the whole process you doing here?😢
Now that you fully exposed this wonderful machine, how would you grade the build quality or overall quality of this advanced combo?
Question, the dryer section, is it more like a dehumidifier, than a normal dryer, as far as drying goes ?
Great video, I have this exact same unit and it has been working great until now. It does the full cycle but does not dry the close at all, stays completely wet. I went into the service mode and ran the HP test and found the compressor power and speed both stayed at 0 for the entire test. It seems like this is my issue, what could cause the compressor to not get power? Thank you for any help
U remind me of my cousin from Europe.. He took apart so many things, including garbage disposal, floor fans, dryer vent, VCR, wall phone, ceiling fan,typewriter, to name a few.. He also solved Rubic Cube effortlessly..
The irony is that my brother was the one into electronics. And I was the one that was always into money. And now that we are grown up. He has a finance channel on UA-cam. And this is what I do LOL.,
This video is exactly what I've been hoping for. I've had one of these machines for 2 months so far and it's been awesome, but I've been worried about what kind of maintenance it will need down the road in 5+ years, and how I can accomplish it. Specifically how I can get at the coil for a good solid cleaning if it gets fouled by stray lint and hair over time. My unit is wedged in a small closet with about 1/4" on each side of it, and getting it in and out is a feat to put it lightly. While watching your tear down, it looks like it might be doable to get the whole thing apart with only access to the front and the top of the machine, which makes me hopeful I don't have to wrestle the unit out of the closet to do that maintenance. I also wonder if it's possible to just fit a hose with a right-angle head on it through the lint filter slot and hose the coil down to clean it if it needs it. That might avoid having to disassemble the thing at all.
I think most of the lint will get on the front of the coil. I think it can be cleaned from the filter housing area without teardown. Maybe once in a 10 year cleaning opening up the top though
I also wanted to ask do you sell your dryers with the cord? And when testing dryers do you just use the same test cord?
I got this unit the first month it was released and lots of lint is getting past the filter. Specifically in the back top corner of the filter. I clean the filter after ever load so it’s not like it’s sucking harder to overcome a dirty filter. Is this normal or should I contact GE?
Holy crap, is like 75 cable ties and 50 screws ! Also no fair you have to do this in a second floor bath closet with the toilet in front of washer !

Hello, great video. I was wondering if you know which electronic board I have to replace if the SmartHQ update failed. I can't get it to work, the power light is blinking and on the screen says Profile. I disconnected the washer for a few minutes and it's still in the same situation. Please help!!

After I watched this video I realized its probably easier to do heart surgery than to do what you did. lol - Nonetheless it was a fun video to watch. I love my machine but I hope I never have to perform any heart surgery on it. :)
Some people have shown rinsing the blue coils to remove the built up lint. Is this ok to do at least once. And then make filter modifications to reduce lint.
Ge should have a flush option to clean it
Ductless speciality hvac contractor here. Humm looks like a variable speed heat pump dehumidifier. 3 phase single rotor rotory compressor. Large 3 phase fan motor. Good sized heat sinks on the inverter.
Judging by the coil sizes, my guess it's a 9-12k btu capacity, using R32 for higher discharge temperature.
Ironically, it's using R134
Pretty cool that the heat pump and blower comes out as one piece, thats gonna be expensive to repair after warranty though
Given how basic the systems are I wonder if a 3rd party could make and sell them at a much better price
Wow that looks to much work and how to troubleshoot that unit if have to do all that to get to most parts. This looks like a headache.
It's really not that bad unless you had to get to the springs or accelerometer. Otherwise all the other stuff can be removed without all of this stuff.
I have two of these in our shop for work, one isnt pumping apparently and one has a messed up sensor. We will tear into them tomorrow maybe but they definitely are some learning. Edit: They are lowes returns so there may be no issues.

I have the machine for about 2 weeks. Love / Hate relationship. This one is going back to be replaced. Please comment / suggest solutions or confirm findings for others to benifit. I took out a 5 Year Extended Warantee from Lowes.
1. You cannot choose "More Water" if you wash only.
2. If you load say 8 Bath Towels etc, and use more water, watch the Blue Gasket, it will Warp / Buckle on the Left Side. It seams the weight is enough on the lower Springs / Shocks to let the tub sink about 1 1/2 to 2" which causes the problem.
3. The unit will not go into Rinse / Spin Mode without wasting about 10 to 15 minutes of trying to balance. But if you watch, its useless tumbling eating up time. I have watche this with multiple large ( Not Oversized Loads ). The Timer will not move ( Increase / Decrease ) during this process which can easilly add 15+ minutes.
4. When ti tries to spin the load, (Often) it will be so out of balance, the tub will hit and the process starts over. Bad Tub Supports / Springs? LG would handle this with no issues..
5. Also watched the unit finish spinning, it would sit motion less for over 4 minutes before the dry cycle will start. I thin the engineers can and should do a way better job of programming the algorithms for these cycles.
6. More than not, at the end of the Dry cycle, it will revert to Load Sensing for well over 10 minutes with no timer on the display.
7. No matter how careful you are with the lint filter, lint is left in the upper / lower portion of the slide rails that MOST consumers will not clean and end up pushing the lint back it to get to the coil, its almost enivatible. It is difficult to clean the small amounts of lint off of the rubber gasket, the only way to do this is rinse it off.
GE Suggestion :They should re-do the design and seperate the 2 Filters, One Slide for Ofter 3 to 5 Load Cleanup and have the 2nd Filter designed differently as to how it slids in and out so NO LINT passes during the cleanout process, Other manifactures have a better way to handle this.
I'm Keeping the machine an pray most of the problems are fixed with the replacement unit and/or Software updates.

Nice work! Do you think that it would be necessary or helpful to remove the heat pump cover and try to clean the coils after extended use, even if you employe some of the DIY fixes to keep the lint from bypassing the filter? Looks like a big and tricky job for an average Joe.
Thats a good, tough question. I think it would be advisable maybe every 2 years. Its a lot of work, but I think a fair number of steps can be bypassed. I was doing it the "Official" way as per GE, but like so many things, you can avoid half of the items if you literally jus wanted to remove the heat pump cover, most likely
Where is the Drain Hose of the Bottom of the Condenser? Looks like it fell of when you removed the coil. The water needs to somewhere get to the drain.
I accidentlly got a feather duster stuck that dropped into that hole on the left of the heatpump filter. How do I get it out? I thought it would blow out towards the filter, but it never does and must be stuck in that hole. I currently have a service call for someone to service the unit, but if I can get it out myself I would.
I found the duster down below in the drain plug! It was all matted up. Removed it. All is good now.

We’re contemplating disassembling the unit to take it upstairs around a spiral staircase. How much do you think the heat pump assembly weighed?
Also, have any other tips on what else I could remove to save weight?
About 70-80lb, in my opinion.
Could theoretically remove front/face for less weight and size, but its going to be a nightmare either way. Maybe counterbalance weights too. Just pay someone well to get it put back together right and document every single screw you take out in an organizer.

@@bensappliancesandjunk Just letting you know. I did it...completely took the sealed heat pump assembly, door and counterweights off. Our GC helped me lift it up the spiral stairs and it felt like it weighed about 100-125lbs. It works just fine with no warning after 15 loads, thanks to your video.
The only thing that GE would be useful for after the one-year warranty is to use it as a chicken coop.😂😂😂
Boy that is a complex beast. I predict the electronics will be the first point of failure though.

Check my lid lock repair video. It should show you how to access it. I have all the files for the drain pump repair video, but I figured since this was so new, to just archive them until repairs like that were needed.
GE, I hope you are watching this video! Understanding that this is the first model of this line, and the other wise, ingenious, overall design, I can forgive you for this Rube Goldberg monstrosity! But as a designer myself, please know, you are almost invariably spending twice as much for the production of this complexity than you need to if you just did a good decent design for manufacturability overhaul. Maybe you did not do this because you thought you would not sell enough units and recoup the cost of a design for manufacturability. But I think I hear you are selling well, in which case this needs to be a number one priority, which will also let you get your price down to compete with the new LG.

@pliancesandjunk Oh cool, thanks for letting me know! I was thinking about getting one and trying to use an adapter I used on my previous GE units to locally control them (the green bean adapter).
But I couldn't see anything about an ethernet jack in the manual or online, and I cant easily inspect the in store unit.

I notice you do not have a dog! Our machine is full of dog hair, hard to remove from the foam filter, wish they had a better system. Still love this machine though!
I accidentally gouged a few heat exchanger fins when I was vacuuming out the lint tray. I’m so annoyed. I’ll look at this video in worst case that the fins need to be realigned. Would try a GE technician first. Argh!!
As a repair technician, this machine is gonna have so many damn problems. Between the sealed system and the massive board and the interface and thermistors, this looks like a problem waiting to happen.
Already had to do one of the ntc's on this but seeing it torn down, yeesh.
The NTC inside the heat pump assembly... That one is a massive PITA
@@bensappliancesandjunk yeah I can imagine. These are seemingly pretty well made and a really interesting and innovative design which ge tends to excel at (the innovation), but you know as well as me the more complexity on these machines the more points of failure.

No not under any circumstances, a separate washing machine and separate dryer stacked on top is a far far better option. It’ll be more convenient to use, cheaper to purchase and cheaper to maintain

@@bensappliancesandjunk well, as it’s far taller than a standard FL washing machine, it’d not be a huge difference for some additional height available to stack a dryer on top of a washer. I wouldn’t think many laundry’s (in my experience) would have enough space above a washer, (except where the washer is under a bench top, which is very popular now days)

I think that 80% of these calls are going to be clogged filters... either the drain or the evaporator
Insane that its this difficult to get to the heat exchanger which will need to be cleaned every few years. I don't care how good their filter is...fine lint will get past it and cake the fins.
Access to the exchanger should be readily accessible...this is ridiculous.
Seriously, any work required for this machine cannot be undertaken in the customer’s laundry, it’ll require a trip to the workshop, and due to the enormous weight of this unit that’s a 2 man job with a hydraulic lift on the back of the delivery truck (as this is a 300 lb unit. $$$
Don’t forget, after all this dismantling, diagnosis has to happen, then the unit has to be temporarily reassembled to order parts before returning a week or so later
A professional would be using a SmartHQ and know what the problem is without touching a part. Due to that system this would be the easiest machine to figure out requiring no disassembly since the UI would give the tech full mastery of system tests.
@@bensappliancesandjunk , from my experience, fault code diagnosis is most often not specific enough to confidently bank on. Even the famed MIELE laptop hookup isn’t a bankable solution
use a heat gun or hair dryer. Not prying and scoring. 6:40

The maintenance cost of this unit would be enormous if there is a problem. I would avoid this like the plague.

You can only imagine how much the repair cost would be if you were to pay someone....
I think the answer on that kind of depends on one side, you don't have to have a vacuum and blow torch to replace the system so that is going to be really good. But then the downside is. What is the true cost of the entire package going to be in the end period if someone was smart, maybe there will be a third party system that would be cheaper than whatever GE puts out that you could use and save a ton of money.

Ben, I’ve been an appliance service tech for 29 years I’ve never been a GE fan especially now since they are owned by higher Chinese company Haier. The appliance store I work at recently brought on GE appliances against my warnings. I’ve seen a lot of overly complicated appliances in my day, but this looks like a complete headache to Service I didn’t realize that they stuffed a heat pump in this. Maybe you won’t see too many of these out in the field. I am about to go out on my own and this is one I’ll probably be turning down to Service.
Why have that attitude about future tech. Instead you should embrace it and become familiar with fixing them because this is the future
@@Dslrepairpro I get why you would think that but if your not a tech you just don’t understand how much work is out there and how few of us there are. There are fewer and fewer each year because ones that retire aren’t being replaced with newer generations. To give you an example the appliance and furniture store I work at in Tennessee is in a town of about 70,000 people realistically there are four certified service techs in this town. Three of us work for the store and we receive roughly 4 to 500 service calls each month and we just service what we sell, the other service tech in our town doesn’t leave the city limits. Because we service what we sell, we do cover from Kentucky to Mississippi Memphis to almost Nashville. We could easily drive an hour and a half to our first call. So products like this are a huge hindrance that those of us who are completely overwhelmed with calls are just not going to work on or reluctantly.

That's a lot of work and if it needed repair under warranty I would fear the tech would forget to attach something back on or leave a connection cable tie unsecured. I've caught warranty car repairs where they forgot bolts and screws. But, this machine seems like a repair persons nightmare. I sure hope this model doesn't end up with a long repair history and actually just works for many years without issues.
I’ve been a service tech for 29 years and this machine is a nightmare and it’s probably going to be difficult to find someone who will even work on it. Ever since GE sold their appliance side to Haier the Chinese company. I’ve noticed fewer and fewer servicers that will steal deal with GE. I’m leaving an appliance store. I’ve been with for 15 years and going out on my own and this is a brand or product I will not be taking on.

@@Resist4 yes we’re over run, they’re aren’t many of us left. I’m 46 and have been at it since I was a sophomore. so many of us have retired and not enough younger people are replacing them, we have so much work we can decide what we want to and not want to work on and still have a 60-70 hr work week if you want. It’s unfortunate, plus the companies are not giving the pay increases in warranty work they should or they make it so difficult to get paid by them that we don’t even mess with it. Especially Samsung and LG there are probably 4 times the whirlpool certified warranty servicers out there.

If you can't make book time (there are books that say how long it takes to fix almost everything), you lose money on the job and many people will blanch at the price to fix just going by what he went through to get as far as he did on this machine. Techs want fast and easy repairs.@@Resist4

CALL BEST BUY THEY SEND ME TO LG, CALL LG THEY SHOWED ME TO PUT ON A SPECIAL CYCLE TO FIX THE UNIT. IT DONT WORK. THEY KEEP SAYING THIS IS THE FIX. DO YOU KNOW THE PROCESS TO PUT IT IN MAINTENANCE MODE SO I CAN USE THE MODE TO DRAIN THE UNIT. ALSO I CHECKED EVERYTHING. NO BLOCK IN THE CATCH/FLITER, DRAIN HOSE IS NOT LONG OR OBSTRUCTED, WATER PRESSURE IS NORMAL. PLEASE CAN YOU SEND ME THE MODE PROCESS SO I CAN DIVE DEEPER. LG CUSTOMER SERVICE IS PUSHING BACK THEY DONT WANT TO SEND SOMEONE TO MY HOME. LOVE THE CHANNEL BY THE WAY!!

Ge is a terrible brand, and this machine is garbage
ge is horrible, the worst of the worst, the labor cost will have to be at least 500 and more, not to mention sealed system 700 plus service call and labor, after warranty which is when they are ruined, the repair will be unaffordable.... The best recommendation is don't buy it, you will waste your money...
