  • Do you know that there were seven grand churches inside the walls of Intramuros?
    They were built during the 350-years of Spanish colonial period, and were the base for spreading the Catholic religion all over the Philippines.
    The seven churches: Manila Cathedral, San Agustin, San Ignacio, San Nicolas de Tolentino, Our Lady of Lourdes, San Francisco and Santo Domingo. We were able to get old photos showing how beautiful these churches were.
    Unfortunately, 6 of them were badly damaged during the Second World War.
    We went on a walking tour of Intramuros to find out what happened to these churches.

    Almost everything Manila have problems with right now is because of WWII. The transportation issue especially. Because Manila wasn’t rebuilt and restored fully, zoning laws were not as enforced, cheap American Jeeps were turned to Jeepneys (a transportation vehicle only temporarily intended to be used because before that Manila had the more efficient Tranvia railway), more corruption, ect. When a city loses 400 years of infrastructure you lose what made the city great and people over time forget and lose respect to it..

    • @josephbautista4401
      @josephbautista4401  24 дні тому +6

      you are correct about transportation. I realized that due to surplus jeeps turned into jeepneys, the Philippines had to switch from RHD to LHD on July 6, 1946. This was big problem because old streets like Escolta, Avenida, Quiapo were designed to operate on RHD. Then came surplus auto parts from Japan that had to be converted to LHD under the mango tree thus compromising safety.

      Manila was not restored properly and D Burnham's plan of Manila didn't come to fruition I'm guessing because they opted to relocate the capital and made Quezon City.

    The old Intramuros was hauntingly beautiful in it's grandeur. Such magnificent churches that could rival any other churches in Europe. It sad to think about how the Philippines could have been the "Europe of Asia' had not the evils of war intervened.

    Matagal ko ng pangarap na maibalik ang Intramuros sa dating ganda nito. Since mainly Spanish fortress ito, sana kahit ibalik nila ang itsura ng Intramuros circa 1896 (as last seen by National Hero Jose Rizal). Nakatayo pa ang 7 actually 8 churches, ang UST at Ateneo de Manila kung saan nag aral si Rizal at iba pang buildings. Maganda sana na maging museum ang buong Intramuros na talagang maipagmamalaki natin sa buong mundo.

    Intramuros is pretty much Europe in Asia. It actually reminds me of Toledo. The walled city has so much potential to help Manila. This citadel can be a unique attraction to all Asians alone wherein a travel to Europe is no longer necessary.
    Why the Intramuros Administration has not implemented a mandatory rehabilitation is beyond logic. I am sure it is cheap to just reconstruct the facades of these historical stuctures, JUST THE OUTSIDE, and there is really no need to build anything inside, just keep it open space for entrepreneurs to rent as restaurants, markets, museums, etc. Then from the rent, use the money to revive the interiors. Has anybody even thought about this? Why do the government and administrators think they need to spend so much money recreating the interior as well? Just the facade will do due to budget constraints. Intramuros is so small and we can’t rebuild even just the outside of a building, THE SHELL?
    And restore the original names of these streets. Get rid of the electric cables. (Venice is older than Intramuros yet they managed to hide their spaghetti wires.) The golf course which used to be the moat, TURN IT INTO A DIGNIFIED PARK where authentic looking calesas are offered to tourists to see the walls. And those uniforms of those guardia civil, seriously, they look cheap. A simple barong will do or saya for women.
    Sa pagka liitliit ng Intramuros hindi maayos-ayos? NAUNAHAN PA NG BGC. Yang Jones Bridge, meron nang mga lumang pictures ng original NI HINDI PA GINAYA, instead naging baduy na hindi mo maintindihan kung nasa movie set ka ng Beauty and the Beast o Disneyland. Tapos sa harap pa nang Jones Bridge nag tayo pa nang higanteng Chinese Arch. At hindi pa na contento, GUMAWA PA NG ARCH BRIDGE NA MODERN.

      I agree with your comment about the golf course. It should be redeveloped into a park so that the public can enjoy it instead of few golfers who have no concern about it's history and heritage. Also agree that the giant Binondo arch, Jones Bridge, Esplanade and the Binondo Intramuros Bridge are all quite tacky.

      Best comment and suggestion I've seen so far! Why haven't they thought of that? Intramuros is so small, yet they haven't been able to restore its original beauty. The IA exists for a reason, but they can't seem to do their job right. I can't believe they let those modern buildings and Bahay na Bato wannabes be built inside the walls. And the names? I'm sure people would disagree with returning the old names in Manila, and I believe it won't be that necessary either. But for historical places, especially Intramuros, why didn't they retain it? The intramuros that we see today looks more like a Disneyland compared to its pre-war beauty. I really hope they do something about this.

    Wonderful tour. In terms of art and architecture, Santo Domingo Church is the greatest loss. The gothic crown jewel of the wealthy and powerful Dominican Order housed a 16th century ivory statue of Our Lady of the Rosary ("La Naval") and had European masonry and interiors hand-carved from the finest native (likely now extinct) hardwoods. Spiritually, the greatest loss was San Nicolas de Tolentino Church. It housed a set of 17th century wooden statues that included the original Black Nazarene (the one in Quiapo is a later copy) and therefore had it survived the war, would've been the greatest Catholic devotional shrine of the 7 churches.

      In a matter of a generation, most if not all of the other cities destroyed after WW2 have been rebuilt, even warsaw. But Intramuros, no. It is nobody’s fault but our leaders. If the Manila Cathedral was immediately rebuilt, why not the rest of the buildings. Anyway, I made a comment to further explain, just read it.
      Again, stop dwelling on how it was or what could have been, think of ways to restore because if other countries were able to rebuild, why haven’t the Philippines? If business districts are being built left and right throughout the Philippines, why can’t IA figure this out? If Boracay an entire island was mandated to be saved, why not Intramuros? Destruction is only temporary, rebuilding is just waiting around the corner.

      The Americans were not as supportive of the Catholic churches unlike Spain. With so much ruin, the Catholic Church itself did not have much of the resources, after WWII, to resurrect those Churches. We can though, contribute our resources now in the maintenance or improvement of the Churches we have. All over the country, there are a number of big and small Churches that needed financial assistance. We do not have yesterday, but we have today. And today, we have Us.

    There were actually two Franciscan churches almost fronting each other in the Intramuros area: the San Francisco Church (the Franciscan mother church in Las Yslas Filipinas) and the Chapel of the Third Order Franciscans (Venerable Orden Tercera). This makes a total of eight Intramuros churches. The Franciscans later sought to replicate the old Intramuros layout in building Sampaloc's Our Lady of Loreto church almost facing the St Anthony Shrine of the Third Order Franciscans.

      San Ignacio Church - When Ateneo was rebuilt in Quezon City, plans to build a church there was planned. In the later years, the Church of the Gesú was built. This somehow replaced the original San Ignacio Church.
      Lourdes Church - now thw National Shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes in Retiro, QC
      San Francisco Church - Santuario de San Antonio, Forbes Park (the original statue of St. Anthony in Intramuros was moved here)
      Santo Domingo Church - of course was relocated in Quezon City, now the National Shrine of the Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary - La Naval de Manila. The Dominican formation house was also moved here.

    To reconstruct these 5 churches will take a lot time, effort, money like billions of pesos. The best is relocation to Manila suburb like Bulacan, or Batangas, to a wider space like 2 hectares of land. A lot of artisans, carvers painters, engineers, architects need to be involved with this both local and foreign. Huge undertaking project with National Museum, DPWH, MMDA, Archdiocese of Manila, NHCP, DOT, and even the Vatican. Look what happened to Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, after decades still not yet finished. But look at Las Cazas de Filipinas in Bataan, it recaptured the Old Manila. We almost lost San Agustin were it not for my restoration of the retablos inside due to neglect and indifference. But it awakened the Intramuros Administration and UNESCO also stepped in.❤😊

    Ewan, nakakapanghihinayan....sayang yung kasaysayan, yaman at ganda ng mga istraktura. While watching this, maiinis ka lang sa mga kano... obvious na binomba ng mga kano ang Manila para dumepende uli ang mga Pilipino at kung tutuusin pwede namang hindi...sumuko lang naman ng tuluyan ang mga Hapon ng binomba ng Nukleyar ang Hiroshima at Nagasaki... pero kung yun talaga ang kapalaran ng 7 Churches of Intramuros. Anyway, congrats for a beautiful and informative vlog content.

      thank you very much for watching this vlog. I hope to bring more heritage sites soon. Hopefully, I can do Porta Vaga of Cavite City soon which also had Intramuros-like walled city. It lost 8 beautiful churches during the war also.

    Hindi na ba kayang ma restore talaga ang complete 7 churches? Bakit sa Poland at Germany sonrang durog na durog moong WW2 ang mga hystorical buildings nila.

    • @josephbautista4401

      Hindi na. At that time due to limited funds, only the Manila Cathedral was restored.

      The 7 churches were restored, just not in their original location in Intramuros but elsewhere within Metro Manila

    I don’t think that it’s the government’s role to rebuild churches. With so many more necessary infrastructures needed to be built and rehabilitated after the war, not prioritizing the churches (when we have so many already) was justified. Besides, the responsibility of rebuilding the churches falls on the respective religious order.

    • @josephbautista4401
      @josephbautista4401  12 днів тому +1

      yes, it was the responsibility of the religious orders to rebuild the churches. with the existing churches already badly damaged, it is less expensive to build a new one on a bigger place outside the walled city than rebuilding the existing ones.

    Beautiful walled city. Just don't get scammed by pedicab and calesa drivers wich the admin is doing nothing. Better to walk around and feel the past.
