  • A bonus episode this week! This is our rooftop tinny setup for travelling around Australia. It was always a no brainer for us to bring the tinny, but the hardest part was deciding on how to transport it when we also have the camper van. Pretty much the only option for us was to put the tinny on the roof off either the car or the van, we decided on the car roof, as this way it didn’t have to come off the van every time we set up and we could have a base camp set up and still be able to drive to the boat ramp. We got quotes from multiple companies that wanted around $5,000 and above for a rooftop boat loader, so we decided to build it ourselves and save some money. We are so happy about how the boat loader turned out and we use it multiple times a week. The main frame is made out off 80x40mm c section and the cross members are 50x50mm box section. Both are 6mm thick and a good grade off Aluminium I can’t quite remember exactly the code.
    Once welded up it was powered coated, wired up and mounted onto the rhino back bone. It works a treat.
    The motor is a 2 stroke Yamaha 15hp and fits on the floor in the backseat of the car and it has been working great as well.

    Howdy. I don't want to 'rain on your parade' but I think you may need to take another look at the weight you are carrying on your roof. Rhino-Rack only allow about 90kg of cargo on their RTPB1 Backbone and by the time you have the tinny (86kg), the awning (10kg), the winch (8kg), the extra bar-work( est. 20kg) you are already overloaded by 34kg... before you also add the tinny mover wheels, a couple of crab nets & the esky. I'm not just trying to have a go at you... just wanted to point it out for your safety.

    Very helpful video, thanks guys. I'm pretty new to the channel so sorry if you've mentioned it in the past, but where are you storing the boat motor in your wagon? I'm looking at doing something similar

    • @LifeAdriftAU
      @LifeAdriftAU  Рік тому +1

      Hey mate no that’s perfectly fine to ask. We store our outboard in the foot well off the back seat. As we are only two people driving around. Amd we just lock it in place when we role the front seats down. I wanted it to be in the car so if we have to drive to a ramp to launch we can leave our van set up. Our draw bar is tiny but I think that’s where most guys put them

    • @JoshSinnott97
      @JoshSinnott97 Рік тому

      Thanks for the reply, that's not a bad idea. I'm thinking of removing my middle seats and having a mounting plate bolted to a false floor but just thought I'd see how you guys went about it. Pretty good how it just sits there and doesn't move around for you guys though
      Yeah I'm in the same "boat" aha. I'm not towing so if everything can be in or on the car I'd be laughing. The trackabout camper trailer is pretty cool with the boat and outboard being able to be mounted onto it. Maybe one day aha

    • @LifeAdriftAU
      @LifeAdriftAU  Рік тому

      Yea if you have the time I recommend taking the seats out and making up a floor you can secure it to. You’ll also pick up so much room for storage. We were a bit rushed for this trip

    1 question have you noticed any extra drag with the tinnie on top?
    Extra fuel etc?

    • @LifeAdriftAU
      @LifeAdriftAU  11 місяців тому

      Great question mate, it really does add a lot off drag. By it’s self no boat adding 2L per hundred and with a boat it adds another 3 I recon. Amd does slow us around. But we wouldn’t travel around aus with out a boat so we just have to use it

      I’d be towing a pretty big caravan as well so maybe it won’t affect it much from that drag!
      Any little tweaks you’d do to it after using it for a while now?

    • @LifeAdriftAU
      @LifeAdriftAU  11 місяців тому

      I put a 100mm piece off Teflon where the rope comes out the winch onto the frame as it was rubbing slightly. Probably wouldn’t bother with the roller again. Other then that pretty good.
      Yea vans behind the car arnt to bad cos once you get the weight moving it keeps rolling. The boat constantly creates drag even though low weight. But I would t do a trip like this with out a boat. 👍
