I love R.B. because he is a very honest, straight forward and deep man. Probably misunderstood attitude-wise by many, because he has a serious outlook towards life. I feel him a lot because I do think that deep inside, he is an Existentialist. Like the great German thinkers such as: Schopenhauer and Heidegger, often their way to feel reality and their outlook towards the world, was often misunderstood by the establishment.

It was another time, maybe now that would be terrible. production companies are used to trampling on artists. I've read somewhere that ELP had to play at that time but didn't arrive on time. That's why they insisted that I play DEEP purple. Blackmore made it very clear that they were going to play late at night. That treatment was respected and Blackmore set the stage on fire so that ELP was left out. A great anecdote, and you have to have the courage to do such a thing. I don't know why it is judged that it could have been a tragedy etc.. was it???

Sure you can disagree with Ritchie's behavior, as many people disagree with other musicians too. But it's always easy to point your finger at an idol and say he should do better. How many managers do nasty stuff until this very day, getting musicians into drugs, greedy for money, controlling the image of a famous person, pressing even more money... Ritchie doesn't have a clean image for sure. But nobody ever talks about the 'manager-mafia' in the industry. And that's disgusting.

This is why I have more respect for ELP. They gave a far better performance even after the mess that deep purple left. I mean just look at Greg Lake's performance that night when he sang "still turn me on" just sitting on a chair, playing his 12 string acoustic guitar singing like a god while chewing gum...... I don't think David coverdale or Glenn Hughes could even come close to Greg Lake's performance. Also may I add Keith Emerson's revolving piano and Carl Palmer's revolving drum stage. Carl palmer gave such an awesome performance that night, way better than Ian Paice. Jon lord was the only one who held it all together. I respectfully disagree with Blackmore that they upstaged ELP.
