I had the privilege of "being friends" with Joe for a very short period of time. He is one of the most generous rockers I have ever met, and I have met a lot of 70/80s musicians. I was a struggling singer with an established NY/LI band, he gave me so much great advice, and I got to see him at Radio City (back stage! TY JOE!) during that short period that he was in the Deep Purple (Mark V). I have sat in a room with this man and heard he sing aloud, no mic, no effects, and no matter what any of the haters say here, his voice is awesome. He may not be Dio, Gillian, Hughs or Coverdale, but for the record, none of them are him either!
"He may not be Dio, Gillian, Hughs or Coverdale, but for the record, none of them are him either!" Nicely put. For me due to his voice alone, he is one of the alltime greatest rocksingers. And the guy had (and has) a lot of Soul as well, that is what the rocksingers of today gravely miss. And seems to be genuinly a nice dude, even better!
I saw Rainbow in Lakeland Florida with Krokus opening. Awsome show. Then I saw Joe Lynn Turner singing with Yngwie Malmsteen with Lita Ford and Black And Blue opening in Pensacola Florida. Another awesome show.
You and Ritchie created some great music and was awesome live. I cut my teeth at 11 on machine Head and mowed a lot of lawns to buy my first album made in Japan and I stayed loyal with burn and loved Ronnie's stuff in Rainbow but the Deep Purple album you was on was great and really people disrespected the great tunes on that album. Cut runs deep is an all time from any of the MK's song for me and fire in the basement 👊🎯💯🔥💥 And of course straight between the eye's and and street of dream's. You really brought Ritchie back into supreme form Waiting for you to come to Cali so I can check you out solo. God bless and thanks again for the great song's you put out there for us to do much enjoy 👊🎯💯
I saw him at a small club on long island 2011 and he was on fire right after dio passed away and he did long live Rock and roll as a tribute, after the show he was about to leave and he passed me , I had a picture of him from hit parader magezine so I said hello and he Saw the picture of him from 1983 we talked about it and he signed it, what a great show and night,I have the picture framed
Joe Lynn turner , I spoken with him , when purple played in Brasil at hall off Hotel , he is just a generous star ⭐️, gentle and very charismatic , the show was fantastic, a great rock singer , Turner Rock !😀😀😀👍🏻👍🏻😎😎
This guy was and is a terrific singer. He did a cover of Spencer Davis' "Gimme Some Lovin" some years ago and it sounded fantastic. For some reason I thought he was English for all these years.
one talented sob,his voice is haunting, ritchie blackmore knew talent when he heard,it,missing pieces in a band are hard as hell to fill, vocals are the hardest,a rhythm sections is just that, the vocals fills the spot, besides we have the same middle name,JOE YOU are a incredible vocalist, yep
I love “Can’t Let You Go” very much. When I got to see the video, the thing that stood out most for me was not the story or special effects, it was “Oh my God, is this guy FULL of himself!” Pretty disgusting, but damn it was a good song, and yeah he even co-wrote it. Later on I got to see a version from his solo career, around 2004 or so, and I sighed with relief and smiled. Yeah, he was definitely well past that full of himself thing! But hearing him say it at the end of this interview, that he recognized that phase and admitted to it sheepishly, that was the best for me! Love you Joe, you’re fun on stage and a great performer and songwriter. And glad you’re a regular guy now :)
I had a small rehearsal studio in Raleigh NC back in 2010 (The Band Room). i got a call from a promoter who was looking for a place to host the Rock-N-roll cares show in Cary. they needed a place for several artists to rehearse with studio backing musicians and other touring musicians for one day before the show, they never said who would be there. That day a limo pulled up and jack Bruce arrived, then a buss with Mark Farner, Allen white, Joe Lyn Turner, Eric bazilian and several other Great Musicians. I was flooded with requests, suggestions and demands. But Joe Lynn walked in and stuck his hand out and said Hey Man I'm Joe Lynn..Nice Place! Joe and Eric were the Nicest Guys from the start! Honest, Modest and sincere! With Joe what you see is what you get! A Honest hard Working and (Fantastic Singer) with a Down to earth personality!,,I couldn't believe the that all these greats where in my house! But Joe Made My Day! cheers Joe!
Papi Great story. However, I recall the concert you speak of occurring in September 2008, not 2010. I was there in Cary, NC to cover that show of JLT with the John Entwistle Foundation All-Star Band for the online publication, Rainbow Fanclan Legacy. JLT later played at the Liberty Theater a few hours after his performance in Cary. This was to 200 plus people who got the treat of their lives hearing jams by some of the same performers who just wanted to play...
This is a great story! And me being from Raleigh, NC makes it even better! I love JLT. He has always had such a strong incredible voice. A far cry from Ian Gillan, but in a good way. Joe didn’t have to sing high to get the point across. He’s still one of my favorite vocalists to this very day!
Джо мой любимый , какое счастье , я была на твоем концерте в Иваново , это бесподобно , до сих пор живу эмоциями от голоса это совершенство . конечно единственный в своем роде так же как и Дио уникален и любим мною.
The first thing I ever heard of Yngwie Malmsteen was 'Oddessey' and I remember thinking "How can someone that good on the guitar also be such an incredible singer?" I didn't realise the singer was actually Joe Lynn Turner. Love him or hate him he's a truly great singer.
I had absolutely no clue Joe had no hair for all these years, whoever he got his hair pieces from did a great job, so sorry that happened to him, it must have been hard on him. I'm glad he came out and told his story.
Interesting interview. I never knew much about the personal lives of some of my favorite musical singers and songwriters or how they got started until UA-cam. Thank you
I think he's one of the best rock singers America has ever produced. Next level talent and he understands what a hard rock singer is supposed to do , and he delivers
Ha! @2:55, he's right about the Heineken, I was lucky enough to get backstage passes back in the early '90s, and that's exactly what they were drinking. Nice!
Bot underrated in Canada... I'm a musician from the 80s and Joe's name always comes up when talking about great singers. The Rainbow Bent out of Shape album is fantastic.
I think the only thing a little sad from a fellow musician standpoint is that we don't really know him as a guitar player, which he seems most proud of. That's cool, and I dig much of his solo stuff later on, but most just know JLT as a singer.
I never had a record of JLT (solo projects or some of his bands) aside from Malmsteen's Odissey, and it was an excellent release on every aspect to me.
I thought he was great with Yngwie Malmsteen when I saw him on the music video Heaven Tonight. That was my first time seeing and hearing JLT that I can remember.
Great, great interview. We remember Joey way back when his last name was Linquito. Not sure why he changed his name. Really think that last name is cool. Super talented guy.
Alot of people think he's full of himself and don't paint quite a good portrait of j.l.t ...but from the interviews (particularly the last 20 yrs.) ...he seems like a really nice guy ...someone you can "shoot the shit" and have some beers with . ...great frontman !!
One of my favourite singers ever. I have plenty of albums with JLT on vocals. A lot of times I would be albums by bands I'd never heard of simply because JLT was singing on em'. For example, Brazen Abbot. Some of my favourite songs are ones with JLT. Heaven Tonight & King of Dreams. You're the best JLT.
JLT is a good guy , he deserved to be the lead singer in the new Rainbow line up its just not right without him or Bonnet in Rainbow , obviously DIO too but hes passed so a reunion of all 3 singers is sadly impossible now
Jlt is an incredible vocalist - its that simple. He's not Ronnie, or anyone else (obviously), he is Jlt.. People always want to compare. Plus, he's just a normal and gracious fella.

You said it right bud. My thoughts exactly speaking as a musician myself. Your very fortunate to have the chance to meet him
"He may not be Dio, Gillian, Hughs or Coverdale, but for the record, none of them are him either!"
Nicely put. For me due to his voice alone, he is one of the alltime greatest rocksingers. And the guy had (and has) a lot of Soul as well, that is what the rocksingers of today gravely miss. And seems to be genuinly a nice dude, even better!
The fact he has worked with Blackmore attests to the quality of Joe's vocal prowess Rainbow was a centre of excellence for vocalists Doogie included
One of my top 5 singers, I love his color, his tone, his style, Joe is f awesome
Lucky you - that was indeed a privilege!
He did a great job! Really great singer.
One of the most unappreciated underrated yet amazing vocalists in rock
Just listen to JLT's vocal recording on Rainbow's "Can't Let You Go". Pure perfection. Just crank it up real loud.
Axe Master yes!!!
Amen! My favorite Rainbow song, too. Well, no, that would be “Since You Been Gone”, but my second-favorite Rainbow song.
He did an amazing job on that song. Genuinely one of his best from Rainbow days
I love joe's voice.
I liked his voice Rainbow,s Time
one of the greatest singers that has ever lived
one of the most underated rock singers.
No he is not. Anyway, cut out the "Rock" from "singer"
Love Rainbow. Love JLT.
Joe your lyrics were fantastic on the Straight between the eyes album
One of the best singers ever!
Joe has an incredible voice! Good writer, too. Every singer in Rainbow was great and brought something different to the band. I love them all.
He's one of the best rock singers of all time, up there with plant , murcury and coverdale. As good. If not better.
Joe Lynn Turner is still Relevant! Thank You for the Music!🎙️
Hey Joey, I was with you when you were born and I am always with you, keep rockin Uncle Jim .

I would so enjoy to meet this guy...he is gorgeous.
Stonecold was my favorite song.
Such a great vocalist his vocals on Odyssey are beautiful...
Truth! His vocals on that record is masterful!!
One of the greatest rock vocalists EVER! Hands down! JLT is TIMELESS!

A love how fate works!!! Great story how he got hooked up with iconic Ritchie Blackmore (Deep Purple).

most well rounded song malmsteen ever played on, deja vu, crystal ball, memories, Heaven tonight, riot in the dungeons. so good
Yes he was great for malmsteen but when Goran Edmond came along that was the best vocalist malmsteen had in my 2cent opinion .
I had absolutely no clue Joe had no hair for all these years, whoever he got his hair pieces from did a great job, so sorry that happened to him, it must have been hard on him. I'm glad he came out and told his story.
