      Luke I love your interpretation so much. You have one of my favorite nocturne collections for sure, and I love how you play op.32 no.2. Your nocturnes all feel really clean to me. I don’t mean to say they are straightforward but rather they all posses what I love about the music.

    The lackadaisical beginning, the tragic turn, the anger at an unfair world, the sorrow of things lost, the return to peace but with the knowledge that nothing will ever be the same, and a hopeful yet melancholic resolution -- I felt it all in this performance

    out of this world!!: i was lucky enough to hear the same recital as the CD (sonata n.3, bagatelles and intermezzi) in bologna last summer. it really felt like he was playing every note for the first time, like he was discovering the music in front of me.
    i'm so lucky that this giant likes my town, i've already been able to hear him live 5 times: he's just perfect, with the hands of 25 year-old, the maturity and experience of a master, and the sheer joy in playing of a child.
    he's not only one of the greatest pianist to ever grace the instrument, but also the last apostle of the same russian school as Richter and Gilels, no one will ever be able to make the piano sing/vibrate quite like them.
    thanks DG for the great quality audio/video, i'd never heard this nocturne played so beautifully.

    • @ws8434
      @ws8434 4 роки тому +2

      totally agree, listening to Sokolov (especially live) feels like being back in time, the sound he produces is a miracle more often than not. But hopefully the 'end' of this famous Russian school has not come yet - you should really listen to anything by Alexandra Dovgan. Although only being 13 or so she comes closest in sound, seriousness and 'musicality' to the great maestro. It's absolutely incredible, but actually she was honourfully pronounced by Sokolov himself as a (future) star, so no big surprise. I remember listening for the first time to some Rachmaninov Prelude played by her and I figured it was equal to Sokolovs performance, which really shocked me considering her age. Also her Beethoven is very mature and has no elements of showing off. So I'm very excited about her future and really do hope that she will keep up this attitude and good work...

    Honestly his intro is the best I’ve heard. I don’t really like his mid section compared to Rubinstein’s. Don’t get me wrong it’s an extremely beautiful interpretation and I like the nuance and the difference in atmosphere he brings, but Rubinstein’s performance for me will always be #1. With that being said this is in my liked videos and will be a performance i will come back to to study when I learn this piece. Truly eloquent phrasing.

    I keep a copy of the Nocturnes on my piano. At all times. It is THE 'manual' for any pianist. They change each time you play. That's because they become part of you. You see it here - tortuously in Grigory. This Nocturne is pulling him out of himself. He is performing who he is tonight.
    Any Nocturne - but for me all of them ...To choose one - for today..........say....13th in C Min pls.

    In a valiant effort into be musical,the Maestro takes liberty with a slow tempo, especially the middle f minor section. If one compares the 1950's Rubenstein performance, it shows the essential nature of how important tempo is. Chopin should never be dragged. When Maestro Sokolov brings the tempo up a bit it makes a tremendous difference. Of course his interpretation is his own and I must respect it.
