There were several presidents before him, when the U.S was still under the Articles of Confederation, John Hanson would be an example of one.

All about intent. Who should really be celebrated, the man who donates to charity to make his business look better, or the guy who quietly works the soup kitchen in his free time? Sure, the businessman makes a bigger impact, but he doesn't give a shit about who's being helped he cares about the business.
Lincoln ended slavery as a tool to win the war and preserve the union. Same as his choice for vice president. John Adams stands on his beliefs for his decision.
@@AnimatorBlake you make a valid point, but surely intent shouldn't factor entirely into the impact of someone's actions. If a guy cured cancer because he himself was afraid of dying to it, he still cured cancer. Similarly, Lincoln ended slavery, which although perhaps done only for his own gain had an ultimately much greater impact than Adams' personal choice.

"The Proclamation applied in the ten states that were still in rebellion in 1863, and thus did not cover the nearly 500,000 slaves in the slave-holding border states (Missouri, Kentucky, Maryland or Delaware) which were Union states. Those slaves were freed by later separate state and federal actions."
@@latinodollar understandable. being Australian, I'm not too familiar of American history. My point was only that Lincoln's contributions in regards to slavery were greater than Adams, and so was more deserving of a higher position in that regard. Thanks for informing me on this, though.
AnimatorBlake In all fairness the union was in shambles because when Lincoln was elected he refused to let any of the new western states to join the union as slave states which in the long run would surely upset the balance of government as far as slavery vs non slavery representatives go. Although this was only one reason the southern states left the union it is widely considered one of the primary reasons. So Lincoln’s long term goal was actually to abolish slavery, but he didn’t want to start a war in the process. When the southern states left the union, his hand was forced and he freed the slaves immediately in hopes of gaining an advantage in the war by giving them the option to fight for the Union side once freed.
