Ill say this, its not always dumb people. Some people are genuinely desperate. They are told, "there is a chance that you'll never need to worry about any financial problems for the next 5 generations if you give me two dollars. Chances are you won't win, but the reality exists in which you do". Other people have gambling addictions as well
I have a family member and coworker who have gambling addictions, specifically for lottery tickets. They each probably spent enough money to buy a house with, easily hundreds of thousands of dollars each because every single spare cent that is strictly for the absolute necessary is spent on them. They each probably only managed to win MAYBE 10-20K. It's sad, but I don't feel sorry for them. You don't need to be extraordinarily intelligent to figure out the cost-benefit ratio of their addiction, nor the consequences of it. One of which being their constant bitching about not having any money. When barely make 700 a week working, and spend on average 300-500 dollars a week on lotto tickets, I cannot possibly comprehend how one could be broke in such a scenario I just can't figure it out it's like Einstein level shit. Ironically enough, or maybe not so depending on perspective, Ian's shtick of bullying people who buy lotto tickets is probably the only way to genuinely end the predatory practice. Humans are herd animals and follow whatever is the most immediately socially acceptable. So if you truly care about these people, then treat them like utter shit until they stop

However the amount is pretty low on those usually. You should use a third to a half of your winnings to play again if you choose to so you still come out profitable. Next time if there is a next time buy 3 of the same 5$ ticket and odds are you should win on one of them.

I know its late and a joke but it would actually be even less likely. What are the odds that a one in a trillion chance be in the same location twice in a row. Plus if it was there, people would have that dumb correlation of "oh someone won here lets go here aswell" so they would decrease the chances even more if the winning ticket was there in the first place. So basically, probably one in a googel chances which means its basically impossible.

I'm a few years late, but since I've worked at a convenience store I've learned that "lotto" are those tickets where you put down your numbers and there is a drawing every week or whatever. For example, you choose a few numbers " 45 20 35 24" for whatever drawing lotto you choose. A "lottery" are scratch-off tickets where you immediately know if you win or not.

The convenience store I worked at had a regular customer who spent $60 daily on scratch and wins. She brought in the ones from the previous day and bought them based on her lucky numbers for the day or something. If she ever won anything, she would spend it on more tickets. Sometimes she would break even, but she never won the jackpot.

My uncle has won $5000 playing the lotto, know several other people who won money here & there. Not millions of course, but still something. Spending a few dollars here & there on some scratchcards/Lotta tickets is nothing I would denounce. However, excessive spending on lotto tickets is something i recommend no one do.

I personally have never spent a cent on lotto tickets/scratchcards. Yet I don't see anything inherently wrong with spending a few dollars on those gambling tickets from time to time. Yeah the amount accumulates over time, but it's not an amount that will affect your day to day life as long as you're not obsessive.
