I’m from South Carolina and this still happens as a hold over from our grandfathers. This is something a lot of miners and factory men did back in the day in the south. Their hands were filthy from work and this was a quick way to have a snack/ drink without eating coal dust/ grease.

I grew up in south Ga. One of my most treasured memories was when I was little, my granddaddy would take me down to the store and buy me a pack of salted peanuts, a banana moon pie and an RC Cola and then we would head over to the local barber shop. He would dump the peanuts in the RC and open my moon pie for me and then I would sit there listening to all those old men telling their delightful stories while eating (and drinking) the BEST snack on planet earth!! I've never tried it with coke but I'm sure it's just as good! And YES......it MUST be in a glass bottle!! Thanks for this video.......and the trip down memory lane💖. You are my FAVORITE UA-camr!

As a teen back in the early 1960's, we bought the chilled bottles of Coke & the small cello-packed Tom's Salted Peanuts, then poured the peanuts directly from the small opening torn into the cello into the bottle (less mess!) Delish! Quit doing this when Coke changed formula!!! I hardly drink Coke anymore without adding Rum & lime because it's just TOO sweet now. ;-)

Ditto - This cola-peanut drink was a big deal during the 1960's for kids in my (low income) neighborhood too. Difference is I was a Chinese kid in a African American neighborhood. I haven't tried it since then. Kids nowadays have boba, jellies and other stuff floating in their drink, but I think cola-peanuts were the original chewy drink innovation.

We went to the dollar movies in New Home,(teeny little town with about 200 people)got RC cola or Dr. Pepper, and little cardboard barrels of peanuts. In the bottom of the barrel would be a coin, from a penny to a 50 cent piece. The coins were NOT wrapped in anything, and we would lick the salt off. That didn't survive for long. We also had suckers called Charms, with money in them. Man, those were culinary treats. Late '60s early '70s

Middle TN country girl PRO TIPS: never pour all your peanuts in a once, I always like to pour a bit, drink/eat a bit, they won’t get soagy that way. Second tip is wipe or shake out a bit of salt from your handful before putting in and it’ll keep it from getting over salty.
Since I can now purchase low sodium peanuts and even salt free, I’ll buy those instead.
And last tip, if you want to be able to drink your soda for refreshment and also enjoy the treat of the peanuts like on a hot day and don’t want to taint it all, pop a mouthful of nuts and takaswig, repeat ;)

MY GIRL!!!!!!! This is my favorite way to drink coke with peanuts. I've eaten this my whole life. There is nothing better for a quick snack. you just drink a couple of sips and open the bag of nuts and pour them in and its also better to wait for like a minute to let the taste merge. Wonderful.

I don't know that this is specifically a southern thing. I grew up about as close to the Canadian border as you can get and we did this growing up in the 70s.

This combination began showing up in the southern and midwestern regions shortly after Pemberton invented his famous coca-cola back in the 19th century. They didn't know it then but the peanut salt combined with the natural coca leaf extract (cocaine) in the soda gave them a speedy buzz which gave it that POP! People always talked about. #Themoreyouknow

I worked at a small town old school service station as a teenager that lots of local senior citizens frequented and gathered at. We sold a glass bottle Coke and a bag of peanuts combo at least 3 times a day, I'd say. We had a steel bottle opener attached to the counter with an old crate underneath that was emptied weekly.
I've always really loved RC Cola, which we also sold in glass bottles, and would empty a bag of honey roasted peanuts -- along with the debris from the bottom of the bag -- for more of a desserty snack.
