Not really a strange reaction...it's called curdling. The phosphoric acid in the Coke reacts with the milk proteins (casein), causing them to stick together in large clumps. They are quite dense so they sink to the bottom of the bottle, leaving anything less dense as a distinct layer on top. Some ingredients of the Coke will "stick" to these proteins and sink to the bottom with them, which is why the top layer is no longer brown. If anyone has ever had an Irish Car Bomb, a drink where a shot consisting of Irish whiskey (Jameson) and Irish cream (sweet, creamy Baileys) is dropped into a glass of stout beer (usually Guinness), bartenders usually tell the drinker to drink it fast or it will curdle. The same principle applies; the acidic beer and whiskey will curdle the milk proteins in the Irish cream, causing them to clump up and curdle out of solution.
JunDageki I didn't mean to imply that everyone should be a scientific genius, nor to I take myself to be one - I am a scientist, but I wouldn't identify myself as a genius. You should see what it does to raw meat if you want to see just how nasty it can be. And to think, _people actually drink this stuff!_ Also, nice job "liking" your own UA-cam comment....-___- ***** You're welcome!
Tom McKenna The common knowledge about Soda is that it's a drink, it's delicious, and drinking it too much would fuck you up. and what the fuck is wrong with liking my own stuff? should i do things to hate it?
JunDageki No, but artificially boosting the number of "likes" on your comment by liking it yourself seems to be a pretty childish thing to do. I don't think you need to "like" your own comments...of course you like them. You're the one that made them. It's redundant.
Don't forget the proteins, they are not important at all, I will never eat vitamins or proteins ever again !!! I really don't understand american culture the deeper I go into it.
But your stomach acids will do the same thing to the milk anyway! Curdle it into that gunk of cream colored stuff. This is just like drinking an Irish Car Bomb... Guinness beer + Whiskey + Bailey's Cream curdles similarly to this. The difference is: it curdles much faster (less than 30 secs) and it tastes better than milk and coke.
Sue Wartell Coca Cola is a base not acid. So there's no point in saying there's plenty of acid there "already". Milk and Coca Cola (because of the soda) are both bases, so its not even related to acid-base reaction.
Hrushikesh Ghatpande Nope. Coca-Cola has a pH of about 2.5-4.2 (Classic Coke being closer to 2.5), making it strongly acidic. Cows milk has a pH of 6.6-6.8 making it slightly acidic.

Not that mysterious. Coke is acidic. Acidic fluids separate milk into curds and whey. You can do the exact same thing putting some lemon juice into milk. All you were doing is making some (rather disgusting) cheese.
It's interesting, I did it once (mixed cola with milk) and tried to drink it with friends ;p It's not bad in taste, rather specific. I think it shouldn't be noxious. That's less noxious than cola itself, i think.

"It is a reaction of the Phosphoric Acid contained in the coca cola to the milk. Phosphoric Acid molecules attach to the milk giving them more density and separate out while the remaining liquid that makes up the milk and cocoa cola now being lighter floats on top. The solid matter is basically milk that has been curdled by the addition of the more acidic soda. Both items are acidic but coca-cola more so. In general, coca-cola has a pH of anywhere from 2.5-4.5 because of the Phosphoric Acid content where milk has a normal pH around 6.7 (almost neutral, milk that is in the base range is usually mastitic). There are some studies to suggest that because of the high Phosphoric Acid content in most soft drinks that they can help to increase the likelihood that a person will develop Osteoporosis if they aren't getting enough Calcium in their diet. Coca-cola makes an excellent household cleaner - it can be used to take tarnish off of pennies and I've used it to degrease car engines. I will not drink any soft drinks." I had like half a bottle of coke left in the fridge one day and thought it'd be like a root beer float to add milk to it. It tasted mild and good at first but as I drank it with my meal it tasted more and more like puke. I thought it was just my tolerance going down as I drank it but after seeing this I'm guessing it was actually something chemical
Rhinehard Heydrick Thanks, I made it. It failed at first I guess because of the carbon the coke releases. I should've put the milk right after I open the coke.
For some odd reason I poured myself a glass of coke then thought to mix it with milk. I'm glad I watched this video first. I don't think my stomach would have been happy with me. Thanks!
I'd like to see a collection of videos in which pH 1.5-3.5 hydrochloric acid is poured on various foodstuffs and mixed up, and the resulting slurry used as proof that we shouldn't eat those things.
It's just because the milk curdled and took some of the coke ingredients out of it so all you were left with was the high fructose corn syrup. Plus I'm only 12 and I know this. That's just sad if others are amazed by it and only after the 15 minute mark I knew what was happening
Whatever..coke makes me feel good when i am thirsty...so i am gonna drink it again n again n again...lol Btw, our body is capable enuf to wash away all the harmful things, if taken adequately, God has given us a beautiful digestive system though...so dont worry..be happy..nothing stays in us forever! ;-)
What I do is I have it be two parts milk, one part Coke. Let it sit for five minutes so it's not as cold. Take a sip, it's delicious. I've left a glass of it sitting all night once and the milk never curdled because there was more milk than the acids in the soda could handle. Phosphoric Acid molecules attach to the milk giving them more density and separate out while the remaining liquid that makes up the milk and cocoa cola now being lighter floats on top. The solid matter is basically milk that has been curdled by the addition of more acidic soda.
una vez yo mezclé leche, coca cola y café xD y pues... me lo tomé y sabía rico xD

RoseofpainX mi estomago es muy resistente la verdad c:
1. Is all of the sludge at the bottom of the container the precipitate? Explain.
2. What is the clear liquid above the sludge?
3. What happened to the CO2 (that was held in solution) and other gases in the bottle?
Oh dios mío, la leche se corta! Mi vida ha dado un giro de 360 grados
I had like half a bottle of coke left in the fridge one day and thought it'd be like a root beer float to add milk to it. It tasted mild and good at first but as I drank it with my meal it tasted more and more like puke. I thought it was just my tolerance going down as I drank it but after seeing this I'm guessing it was actually something chemical
Is there a specific type of milk and amount of it? Tried it but no reaction happened
Rhinehard Heydrick Thanks, I made it. It failed at first I guess because of the carbon the coke releases. I should've put the milk right after I open the coke.
+Jacqueline Chan Breast milk is higly recommended for best results .
Subbed! Top stuff.
Heh this happened to me once. Accidentally took a glass which I had previously used for milk and then poured Coke into the same glass. :D
as long as you put milk first, then the coke with the same amount of each other, it wouldn’t have a reaction and it would be safe to drink :)
Yea, imma need to know how many mols of each i need
My old mother used to drink milk and coke together, it tastes like an ice cream float when you mix milk with any pop.
It's just because the milk curdled and took some of the coke ingredients out of it so all you were left with was the high fructose corn syrup. Plus I'm only 12 and I know this. That's just sad if others are amazed by it and only after the 15 minute mark I knew what was happening
Coke ,3/4. Milk 1/4
Tasted lovely !
used to mix coke and chocolate milk in school back in day and taste like coffee XD
Whatever..coke makes me feel good when i am thirsty...so i am gonna drink it again n again n again...lol
Btw, our body is capable enuf to wash away all the harmful things, if taken adequately, God has given us a beautiful digestive system though...so dont worry..be happy..nothing stays in us forever! ;-)
Yeah, um, why even bother with the music if it's a broken loop?
...so, how was it then? & is there another link showing you guzzling it down?
Yeah... So much for my Coke and Milk protein drinks in the morning.
"Coke and Milk protein" That ain't no protein drink if it has coke, that's super diabetes 101
What I do is I have it be two parts milk, one part Coke. Let it sit for five minutes so it's not as cold. Take a sip, it's delicious. I've left a glass of it sitting all night once and the milk never curdled because there was more milk than the acids in the soda could handle.
Seriously, I know it sounds disgusting, but Coke Milk, Pepsi Milk, Orange Fanta Milk, all fantastic.
Don't use any clear sodas including Mountain Dew and ginger ale.
You're welcome.
The water separated. Interesting.
That's Coca Cheese :P
I'm lovin' it. Ba-da-ba-ba-baaaa
