    Not really a strange reaction...it's called curdling. The phosphoric acid in the Coke reacts with the milk proteins (casein), causing them to stick together in large clumps. They are quite dense so they sink to the bottom of the bottle, leaving anything less dense as a distinct layer on top. Some ingredients of the Coke will "stick" to these proteins and sink to the bottom with them, which is why the top layer is no longer brown.
    If anyone has ever had an Irish Car Bomb, a drink where a shot consisting of Irish whiskey (Jameson) and Irish cream (sweet, creamy Baileys) is dropped into a glass of stout beer (usually Guinness), bartenders usually tell the drinker to drink it fast or it will curdle. The same principle applies; the acidic beer and whiskey will curdle the milk proteins in the Irish cream, causing them to clump up and curdle out of solution.

      JunDageki I didn't mean to imply that everyone should be a scientific genius, nor to I take myself to be one - I am a scientist, but I wouldn't identify myself as a genius.
      Soda is a nasty thing and it has nasty effects on many different materials (mainly due to its phosphoric acid content), and I was assuming that was pretty much common knowledge by now. You should see what it does to raw meat if you want to see just how nasty it can be. And to think, _people actually drink this stuff!_
      Also, nice job "liking" your own UA-cam comment....-___-
      ***** You're welcome!

    • @JunDageki
      @JunDageki 10 років тому +1

      Tom McKenna
      The common knowledge about Soda is that it's a drink, it's delicious, and drinking it too much would fuck you up.
      and what the fuck is wrong with liking my own stuff? should i do things to hate it?

    • @the_color_orange
      @the_color_orange 10 років тому +7

      JunDageki No, but artificially boosting the number of "likes" on your comment by liking it yourself seems to be a pretty childish thing to do. I don't think you need to "like" your own comments...of course you like them. You're the one that made them. It's redundant.

      But your stomach acids will do the same thing to the milk anyway! Curdle it into that gunk of cream colored stuff. This is just like drinking an Irish Car Bomb... Guinness beer + Whiskey + Bailey's Cream curdles similarly to this. The difference is: it curdles much faster (less than 30 secs) and it tastes better than milk and coke.

      Hrushikesh Ghatpande Nope. Coca-Cola has a pH of about 2.5-4.2 (Classic Coke being closer to 2.5), making it strongly acidic. Cows milk has a pH of 6.6-6.8 making it slightly acidic.

      "It is a reaction of the Phosphoric Acid contained in the coca cola to the milk. Phosphoric Acid molecules attach to the milk giving them more density and separate out while the remaining liquid that makes up the milk and cocoa cola now being lighter floats on top. The solid matter is basically milk that has been curdled by the addition of the more acidic soda.
      Both items are acidic but coca-cola more so. In general, coca-cola has a pH of anywhere from 2.5-4.5 because of the Phosphoric Acid content where milk has a normal pH around 6.7 (almost neutral, milk that is in the base range is usually mastitic).
      There are some studies to suggest that because of the high Phosphoric Acid content in most soft drinks that they can help to increase the likelihood that a person will develop Osteoporosis if they aren't getting enough Calcium in their diet. Coca-cola makes an excellent household cleaner - it can be used to take tarnish off of pennies and I've used it to degrease car engines. I will not drink any soft drinks."
      It's not the milk, it really isn't.

    • @juliannabrandenburg2150
      @juliannabrandenburg2150 4 роки тому +3

      @@joshclutter Milk can cause you to actually damage your bones. Not to mention other things that milk can cause. But, the same is true for many things that we eat nowadays. As a species, humans have strayed far from the healthy path. We have hundreds of diseases caused by thousands of things. Including our terrible diets and lack of fitness.
      Companies put so much crap in our packaged foods, like 'Whey Protein'. Do you have any idea how hard it is for people who are vegan/lactose intolerant to find actually healthy prepackaged foods? It's a pain. So many people have grown up, learning incorrectly about the human body and their needed diets. It's actually terrible how much power the Dairy Industry holds in the School Curriculum. Even in the government, they hold a LOT of power.
      Did you ever stop to think about the growth of a calf? A calf has to grow to 2,400-1,600 pounds. So the mother secrets milk for the baby to drink. Packed with so many things to make the calf grow fast. But this milk also has an addictive property to make the calf want to drink as much as it can. Now, think about humans. We DO NOT need to gain that many pounds and do not need the same nutrition a calf would need. But we feed off of this liquid, addicted to it. It's practically a necessity in every household. The rumor that we need it to 'grow big and strong' is something that has circulated so long that is has become a 'fact', even though it is completely untrue!
      In short, we need to decide one thing. Do we want to live a 'normal' life, eating fast food and barely moving around, and risk a very painful life as we get older? Or, do we want to try to live better, eating the best food for our bodies, and maybe, in the long run, end up living less painful and happier lives?

      The same thing would happen in your stomach with the milk. It's just the Coca Cola acid or whatever inside. This is how cheese is made.

      I would guess with any soda containing phosphoric acid or a similar acid. I just saw a video last week explaining that Coca Cola has an acidity of about 2.5 because if this ingredient.

    I tried a similar experiment where I poured milk and soda in a cup. I guess my error was that I left it exposed it to the air for a few days. After I decided to throw it away, there was a scent that (I guess was trapped inside) was just utterly horrific. :(
    Nice Video by the way :)

    When I was a kid, coke and milk was a popular drink (I think it came from the TV show Laverne and Shirley. Laverne liked Pepsi and Milk) PS what you are seeing in the video is the acidity of the Coke separating the curds from the whey in the milk. the same thing happens if you put lemon juice in milk... or vinegar. That is how cheese is made.

    i actually used to drink coke and milk and stored it too.. it didnt looked like that. i didnt put that much coke in it. my goal was to make coke float but instead of ice cream i just use milk. but as i grew older i became a little bit lactose and this triggered it, but i can still eat dairy.

    Why Coke and milk separate:
    Phosphoric Acid molecules attach to the milk giving them more density and separate out while the remaining liquid that makes up the milk and cocoa cola now being lighter floats on top. The solid matter is basically milk that has been curdled by the addition of more acidic soda.

    I had like half a bottle of coke left in the fridge one day and thought it'd be like a root beer float to add milk to it. It tasted mild and good at first but as I drank it with my meal it tasted more and more like puke. I thought it was just my tolerance going down as I drank it but after seeing this I'm guessing it was actually something chemical

    It's just because the milk curdled and took some of the coke ingredients out of it so all you were left with was the high fructose corn syrup. Plus I'm only 12 and I know this. That's just sad if others are amazed by it and only after the 15 minute mark I knew what was happening

    What I do is I have it be two parts milk, one part Coke. Let it sit for five minutes so it's not as cold. Take a sip, it's delicious. I've left a glass of it sitting all night once and the milk never curdled because there was more milk than the acids in the soda could handle.
    Seriously, I know it sounds disgusting, but Coke Milk, Pepsi Milk, Orange Fanta Milk, all fantastic.
    Don't use any clear sodas including Mountain Dew and ginger ale.
    You're welcome.
