Thanks for the video -- just what I needed. I really appreciate it. The problem with jobs like this is that you don't know what is under that plastic cover, and when you pull on it trying to get it off, you feel like you're going to break something. With your video, I knew what to expect, and the job went quickly. Our car is seven years old this November, used daily, but none of those bolt-holding plastic clips were broken, just three of the nuts were loose. I put Locktite on all four and it should be go for another seven years. When we lift the hatch we always keep our fingers right in the center, on the unlock "button, and I am sensitive to when the hatch lift supports/struts need replacing. We drive lots of back roads and I think over time the nuts just loosened up -- they should have put Locktite on them at the factory or used those lock nuts with nylon inserts. Thanks again.

Lucky you caught it in time. Unbelievable how that obvious design flaw made it to market as recently as 2017.

Appreciate you sending this video. Let's talk a little about why this breaks off in the first place. What's supposed to just be a hatch release is actually used as a handle to lift the entire hatch so the constant pressure on it is what breaks those little tabs. I have a 2019 Sonic Hatchback we purchased in April 2019 so it's been a solid 4 years now before breaking off. I'm going to see what I can do to provide a more permanent fix. Might leave the inner plastic covering off just so I don't have to waste time taking it on/off during the stress test phase once I find a solution.

Another clip broke on one of the ends and the owner of this car ended up buying the part new from the dealer. Cost about $500 because it only comes loaded with the backup cam and hatch release button. Add $100 to get it painted and it cost $600. I couldn't find an aftermarket or used original part anywhere. The owner now keeps a locking suction cup in the car and uses that to lift the hatch to avoid breaking the new piece. Huge design, and parts availability fail.

I can tell you this, the fix didn't hold. The owner of the car had to buy the part primed from GM, charged her a fortune for it because they ship it with the backup cam, hatch switch, lights. Then paid to get it painted. Cost a fortune, couldn't find an aftermarket or used part.

I’ve the UK Aveo. A sonic. Chevrolet Aveo. 2013. Cannot get in boot. Is it likely to be relay or the boot solenoid. Unsure how to tackle it . Wondering how the Sonic manually opens the boot off the latch???
