Started shooting and handloading for 44 mag in the mid 70's almost exclusively cast bullets. I have the Garmin and love it! gonna use it today cause it is always in my shooting Halliburton case... My current 44 mags are the 629 with 6" and my Dan Wesson with custom built 5" barrel. 4" to me is too short for something you are gonna carry out in the field anyway. Also? not a fan of porting. kills about 50fps and kills your ears of which I already have too much of that lol That being said... I have always been a fan of the 460 Rowland but never owned one. for bear i would go with a 1911 government conversion an cast and coated bullets

My personal handload for 45 acp is a 200 grain cast and coated bullet (old HG mold with long nose) at around 1050 fps . I have run it hotter with the Wilson combat springs. but I like this load. it is pretty dramatic in most anything it hits and very easy to control. The Rowland is just a 45 acp that the case is slightly longer for safety but not needed for the velocity. I will have to play around with it but my current load works well in every 1911 I have tried beating up the gun is not my goal. Also the cast bullet would penetrate a bit more which is really the goal for dangerous game. Shooting a boar head on with a 44 mag cast bullet load the bullet did not exit which was a good thing. HP bullets for game do not seem like a good thing to me.

@doranmaxwell1755 They (underwood) have a hard cast load for this caliber and you will see those in the spring. Definitely agree that hard cast is the way to go for dangerous game.

@@murphyfirearmstraining3630 yeah... when you have been doing this as long as some of us have and been told that cast bullets were ....inferior... and then... that they could not be made commercially anyway.. LOL well excuse me but they got nothing. Now for the last 5 years or so I have been coating my own cast bullets or simply buying them when I feel lazy;... but again. The commercial ammo makers are WAY behind the times.... to mitigate leading? LOL they use gas checks! about as outdated as it comes. With HT coat there will be NO leading ... so far I have run coated cast bullets to near 2000 fps (30 carbine) with zero nada zilch leading. So excuse me if I don't get all gushy about a few niche ammo makers making ammo that is at best almost as good as stuff a lot of us have been brewing for 5 years or more at pennies per round. Plus... shooting coated bullets indoors has no health risks You do not get lead poisoning from melted lead.. that is not possible. you get it from lead particles in the air. which...means every time you fire an uncoated bullet. excuse the rant but I hope you can see where I am coming from. They all act like they have discovered something amazing. when they are actually behind the times.

@doranmaxwell1755 just like a lot of the great cartridges came from wildcats. A lot of hand loaders and back yard experimenters have created most of the great things in this industry. I agree with everything that you said.

@@murphyfirearmstraining3630 Thank you... I grew up reading (yeah I know a lost art) all of the greats. They were not always 100% correct but they gave us all a starting place.
