- Possibly my favourite drum module the Dinky's Taiko from ALM Busy Circuits. A great 12 bit digital drum module with noise and oscillators sections and CV for nearly everything. You can expand your drum sequences with accent and choke inputs as well.

absolutely love this module
+Tom Walker yep me too! :)
Love at first sight! Awesome walkthrough too. Lots of power and potential in this "beast" :)
+demoscenes yeah definitely. Having two or three could be killer!
Love both......the Taiko and your Video! :-)
+Responder Music awesome, thanks!
You should be given free gear from all manufacturers! your concise breakdown of this stuff is superb- I am a paying customer thanks to you breaking it down. excellent...
+ambro botic I did get this for free as payment for the video ;-) . I'm working with everyone I make videos for now. It's grown really fast from my initial ideas. Thanks for the support.
Just a quick shout out to you amigo , love the vids
+sonorum73 nice one, glad they're going down well.
Great vid Ben, loving mine! Modulating is lots of fun, but as demoed here, finding the sweet spots & mapping the appropriate voltage is well worth the effort :-)
+BlueWolfSe7en yeah definitely worth having having preset voltage sets to hand to move between sounds.
Nice! I might have to get one of these. Also good to know you can make irregular gates rather than straight clock divisions on Pams old workout, need to figure out how to do that
I waiting mine. Thx for the video
+Olivier Umeshu hopefully not too long of a wait
Man, really goes to show what a wide range of sounds you can do with just a normal oscillator and some noise, huh? Albeit this is obviously a much more compact convenient solution, but it's still inspiring even if you don't have one.
absolutely. Cheers.
Would you be able to do one on Akemie's Taiko? I'm not sure of the differences in practice. I like strange metalic fm percussion and sound effects, but then like to sequence them with different notes to create weird techno loops. Which is best for that? Can the Dinky do that?
Hey Pete, I don't have an Akemie's Taiko so I can't do that currently. But I'd say the Akemie's Taiko would be for you. Check out the Dinky's Taiko video here - ua-cam.com/video/9VXw7HqGucs/v-deo.html - image those functions for triggering and select start and end point for the pitch but having CV over all the FM based back end.
I just found this module and this video and now I'm puzzled. not sure about getting this or akemi's (or drips? or twincussion?) for some heavily modulated perc, like a higher pitched BIA. damn, all sound like great options!
tough call, keep checking them out and go with your gut feeling.
@divkidvideo did you do one of these with Akemie's Taiko?
I haven't.
It seems a bit LOFI. and what you think about your sound? compared with other modules of percussion as tiptop, or Basimilus Iteritas or Peaks.
+pis records well it's not a clone like the TipTop drum so that rules those out for comparison as well as I haven't used nor do I have any TipTop drums. I don't have a Basimulus to comment either but from what I can gather it's a little grittier and more metallic. The Peaks drums are either 808 clones (kick, snare and hat) or synthesis modes for creating your own percussion. Which is closer to what this is doing. I'd say Peaks was cleaner, but far less fun (if it's just a drum module), less flexible and no CV. There's also the new Audio Damage Neuron to think about too if you're considering drum modules. It all depends on what you're looking for. If a more unique custom drum voice is what you want I'd Dinky's was it. If you want clones of classic drums this is not it.
+DivKidMusic thank you very much !
+pis records I've found most of the drum voices in Eurorack to benefit from a VCA or a LPG to get a more natural sound. I have played with a Dinky Taiko in Schneider's Laden for a while, hating the sound of it until I ran it through an Optomix. I also own a Basimilus Iteritas and often find myself running it through the Optomix too, even though I like that one by itself in any case.
+s90210h Yeah having the smooth top end roll off from an LPG works wonders on sounds. Good idea.
You haven't taken my money today, because i already have a Dinky …… Superb video.
+cane creek haha damn! I'll try harder next time.
sampling that 'bass' at 00:09
go for it.
"Possibly my favourite drum module the Dinky's Taiko from ALM Busy Circuits." Is it still, Ben?
when you want a slightly lo-fi digital vibe to the drum sounds it still does a great job. Got a nice quirky digital character that sets it apart from the others.
yes - it is a nice and lo-fi thing - I also have a IJ Plonk(sophisticated) and a Moffenzeef Muskrat(lo-lo-lo-fi but smart ;) to try - and there are a lots of "miles" in between them - different beasts for different use - but I just can afford one at the moment and I have to decide - and yes it's up to me what I want it to use for - but again, that is the problem :))) - thanks in anyway Ben!
Yeah it's a tough choice, just absorb as many demos as possible. Moffenzeef stuff I really enjoy, dirty, crispy, mega lo fi digital. Dinky's is good fun, analogue stuff is nice too, other cleaner voices around as well. It's a tough decision.
i tried really hard to get that sounds e.g. that kick sound on the beginning - but i can't even get close to it - my module sounds completely other with the setting adjusted to yours - also compared it with the demo-unit of my retailer and both are sounding the same - but again can't get your kick for example - do you use a compressor or any other fx which changes the original sound? could it be that newer dinkys (new rev.) sound other than the one you used? thx...
Attack of the mosquitos!
Is this still your favorite drum module?
Did I say it was my favourite in this video?
DivKidVideo in the caption!
ah ok, doesn't sound like something I'd say. But I do tend to be more personal / subjective and things in text comments etc. It's been a firm favourite for a long time for it's general more lo fi and quirky character. Not used it for a fair while now though as I've got a load of samples from it that I've been bringing into projects.
DivKidVideo true. Don’t know if I ever hear you say stuff like that. Gotcha! For the price this is a good one..
Oh God! I KNEW I shouldnta watched this when Im broke!!!
+mCKENIC haha! Sorry Dave.
+DivKidMusic Not to worry - now its the very next module on the (too long) list! :-)
