  • You can play the great golf you've always dreamed of with this simple tip. When you learn how to fix your downswing, you are going to hit farther and straighter with less effort. This drill helped a 30 handicap golfer eradicate his slice and improve his ball striking. He was able to get rid of the over the top downswing and start hitting like a pro. Out of all the golf swing pieces, the downswing is the toughest for golfers to get right. Most golfers I see struggle with a steep, over the top downswing and this causes a ton of inconsistency. When you learn to go from steep to shallow, your golf swing problems will melt away. Today's golf tip is going to melt away your golf swing problems forever.

    I have been watching your lessons along with reading Ben Hogan's Five lessons. For me you are the best golf teacher that makes me laugh while learning. Your lessons have been totally changing my game. One of the most surprising things I have learned is what a tremendous difference you can make with shots just by changing your feet placement. I changed my feet to the position Ben Hogan used and it has given me the accuracy I was looking for. I was amazed at how every shot I hit was dead straight.

    Happened across one of your videos just recently and learned one tip from it. I was having issues with the club being across the line at the top coupled with a cupped wrist. I was starting to think there wasn’t much hope of fixing it. I heard your tip of pointing the lead palm to the ground at the top and I’m not even joking, it worked immediately. Months of struggle disappeared in one range session. Such a repeatable swing position, literally changed my swing. Great tip. Keep up the good work.

    Thank you, Tom! You don't know how much I needed to see this video right now. I just got my swing analyzed by a pro on an app, & they pointed out my main issue being a slight over the top swing where I pull from the top & get quite steep. Your string visualization really makes sense for the kind of practice I've been implementing to fix my swing. I feel like the butt of the club is falling toward my trail-side pocket, & the rotation allows the body to clear the club & continue into a smooth downswing & follow-through. It's crazy how easy it is once it clicks!

      PS: By the way, I would be remiss if I didn't mention that a significant percentage of my online school members are in their 60's, 70's, and 80's - i.e.: a smorgasbord of chronic ailments, physical limitations, back/shoulder/knee/hip pain, arthritis, and joint replacements - and they are overwhelmingly elated to experience the dramatic pain-free game improvement, seemingly effortless power, and resulting enjoyment that this swing affords them.
      If you've not already joined, have you considered enrolling in the online school and taking your learning - and your game - to the next level? At just $14.99/month or $149.99 per year the value in terms of what you get for that price point is beyond comprehension, and based on proven results it represents by far the best golf instruction deal on the planet. Yes Tom !!!! I do so much struggle with
    the intention to hit the ball ,
    I have followed your three steps keeping the lead arm straight , weight forward , and shoulder at the ball.
    But I struggle with that hitting the ball mentality that derails every positive thing you’re three points have thought me.
    Getting over the mental hurdle of hitting at the ball is a hurdle I am trying to get over.
    But I’m still a believer in your teaching !!! Thank you Tom !!!

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  Місяць тому

      I'm very glad to know that my instruction is resonating with you! And I want you to know that you are definitely not alone in your challenge as that "hit" instinct plagues a considerable percentage of the amateur golfing world.
      Mechanics aside, there are two things at play here: 1) Discovering and dialing in our ideal swing tempo, and 2) Feeling that transition - or the change in direction - so we don't rush our downswing from the top and thereby lose our sequencing. Our perfect tempo/rhythm - which is unique to each of us individually - enables us to gather and unload the various components in proper order for seemingly effortless, powerful ball striking bliss. Executing a full shoulder turn is a key component for accomplishing this, since an abbreviated motion lacks both rhythm and a natural stopping point and thereby encourages the "hit" instinct to take over.

    I'm certain I am repeating others here. Tom, You have HELPED ME SO MUCH. !!!!!!! I am the fellow who has cut across the ball ALL MY LIFE hitting pulls with the irons and great big slices with the driver. The instruction you are giving on this video (and other videos) personifies my swing for decades. I very seldom took a divot and if I did it was 2 inches behind the ball. I can't say Thank You enough. One of the most helpful suggestions you gave was placing a stick in the ground at a 45 degree angle a few feet behind the ball and at the toe line. (Just an inch outside the perfect arc) I had always tried to take the club straight back and that has never worked. The stick MADE ME TAKE THE CLUB MORE INSIDE. I am training myself to repeat this arc without the stick. The impact sound tells me I am hitting it flush and when I miss it I KNOW why. That is what makes golf hard is NOT KNOWING WHAT YOU DID WRONG. Thank you a thousand times. ps I love your videos where you take a Hogan or a Woods or a Snead and point out in slow motion what they ACTUALLY did vs what we were told by the magazines they were dong.

    I have loved you videos! I changed my entire swing based off your instruction and could not be happier! All my irons and even hybrids I have this path down but boy oh boy the woods and driver I am still so far over the top, if I get the path correct I always seen to hit with a wide open face and just push fade everything right. I can feel every other club in the bag getting shallow and i know where the club head is in space but with the driver im just lost.

      I'm glad to learn of your improvement, David!
      Oftentimes when golfers are hitting everything well except for the longer clubs - which is quite normal early in the swing change process as a golfer gets used to applying the weight-forward concept to the fairway woods and driver - it can be attributed to one of the following:
      1) Their hips are not continuing their lateral slide through impact. This is common with the longer clubs as the wider stance means that the hips have a greater distance to travel. If the hips stop moving laterally towards the target on the downswing then their rotation takes over, inhibiting any further necessary forward weight loading (we should be 80/20 forward halfway down, 90/10 at impact, and 95/5 in the finish), changing the low point and rerouting the club into a steeper angle of attack. This can produce a variety of undesirable results including fat and thin contact, topped shots and popups, straight pulls, and “banana” slices.
      Of great importance is keeping your upper torso/head in place (in other words, not moving towards the target from a face-on view) while the hips execute the lateral slide action. This preserves the swing center and the desired shallow AoA.
      2) They are not allowing the length of the club to dictate the backswing path and are getting too steep as a result. The shaft length of the longer clubs encourages more of an around the body backswing as established by the shaft plane at address. It may "feel" flat as they take it back along the shaft plane for the first few feet, but as long as they maintain the "weight forward, shoulder down, and hands in" components while allowing the club to work around them, it should put them in the proper position at the top so they can attack the ball from the inside. (A good feel for that lead shoulder is "down and in, under the chin".)
      It is essentially the same swing with every club; just some minor setup differences and naturally occurring shaft plane changes as we graduate up in club length from short irons to woods. To demonstrate, you'll find towards the end of this episode some driving range footage of me hitting a 7 iron, 3 wood, and driver: ua-cam.com/video/o0xscMyN3v8/v-deo.html Beyond that, if you search the word "drive" on this channel you'll see some related content.

    Good drill. Another tip i use is feel like your right elbow is digging into your ribs as soon as you start downswing. Do it slowly to really feel, like you are doing, its almost impossible to go OTT with that elbow locked down. I also find with this it teaches you hip movement. If you are OTT with tight elbow then your right hip is going towards ball, not left hip towards target. 2 birds, 1 stone. Cheers. ✌️

    I’m a right hander who plays left handed. I’ve struggled with a cupped right hand for years. I’m hoping to use this lesson to improve. Lately, I’m having wrist arthritis issues as well. If you have ideas to help us older players with that, it will be greatly appreciated. Thanks Tom.

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  23 дні тому

      Hi John,
      First of all, I recommend checking out different grip sizes and styles to see if any combinations may perform better for you and alleviate at least some of your wrist condition.
      Beyond that, you may be interested to know that a significant percentage of my online school members are in their 60's, 70's, and 80's - i.e.: a smorgasbord of chronic ailments, physical limitations, back/shoulder/knee/hip pain, arthritis, and joint replacements - and they are overwhelmingly elated to experience the dramatic pain-free game improvement, seemingly effortless power, and resulting enjoyment that this swing affords them. It all begins with a proper setup which provides for a free-flowing motion. Upon that good foundation a repeatable swing which produces consistently crispy impact can be built.
      For example, the outward flaring of both feet 10-20 degrees in our setup facilitates the proper amount of body-friendly, free-flowing hip turn back and through. This is a major power source, and it also keeps the club traveling on the correct path. If you were to square your feet so that they were perpendicular to the target line, then your hips would be impeded from turning sufficiently in the backswing (which would then inhibit the shoulders from executing a full and effortless turn), and from releasing properly in the downswing to propel the club through the zone. Restricting this action can cause a variety of path issues and/or also place strain on the lower back, lead knee, and the hip joints as the hips will "want" to move laterally and turn through into the finish but will be fighting the body in the process.
      Have you looked into the comprehensive, sequential learning platform of the online school yet? That's where - among many other courses and lessons covering various aspects of the game - you will find very detailed instruction and drills that take you through the entire swing step-by-step, position-by-position from setup to finish. Thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many accomplished, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - are now enjoying the best golf of their lives as a result, and their unsolicited testimonials tell the story quite well: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews. The value in terms of what you get for the low price point is beyond comprehension, and based on proven results it represents by far the best golf instruction deal on the planet.
      And if you'd like to first "dip a toe in the water" prior to diving into the school, then here is a link to my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Keys You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker”: go.saguto.golf/ Featuring 17 videos and 45 minutes of detailed lesson and drill content, this is a great way to gain a fundamental understanding of this system as well as an introduction to the formal learning method that is delivering the referenced results.
      You don't need the flexibility of a Romanian gymnast - or even of this far less pliable golf instructor - to execute this swing, experience great ball striking, and reclaim - or even exceed - yardages from years past. I hope you'll give the school some thought.
      Let's get you on the path towards body-friendly ball striking bliss!
      Tom Saguto, PGA

    I'm 72 and have made myself into a decent player, for my age, usually logging scores in the low 90's...and mid to high 80's, with a personal best of 76 when I was much younger and prior to having two hip replacements. But I've always wanted to do better! I first discovered your channel a year or so back. I watched a few videos and to be honest, for some reason, I always considered the "stack and tilt" method of playing golf to be a gimmick...so I went on to other channels. The bottom line is that I never improved my game as a result of watching any UA-cam video from anyone. I remembered your channel and decided to watch some of your videos and give the "stack and tilt" system a try since I began to regress with all the "information overload" I was trying to implement. I had just finished shooting a round of 98 when I decided to give you a try. I devoted several hours a day on the range in order to develop a comfort level, mostly trying to maintain proper balance with so much more weight on my left side. But I was committed and worked thru it. My first round using your fundamentals was encouraging. I struck the ball well, really well and with consistency and shot an 84. I logged scores of 81, 82, 78 and 79 on my next four rounds. Today I shot an 84, but the greens were aerated/sanded and I didn't have very good putting day as a result. I find the fundamentals of this system to be so much more simplified than the traditional approach to swinging a golf club and relatively easy to learn. My normal drive has been around 215 to 220 and not always straight down the fairway. I've hit several drives over 250 using the stack and tilt and I hit 12 of 14 fairways today. My one swing thought has been to maintain my "relationship with the ball". I no longer come out of the swing and I concentrate hard on maintaining tilt thru impact. My playing partners have all noticed my improved ball striking which has occurred virtually overnight. They asked me what I did. I told them you could explain it better than I. I know you have at least 3 more followers based on my immediate improvement. I want to thank you for allowing me to really enjoy playing this wonderful game so much better. You're right, flushing the ball is so addictive. My ball striking has never been better. I have subscribed, thanks so much!

    I finally understand what I've been doing wrong. Early and over rotation of the hips leading to a too steep downswing are my biggest problems. oddly enough while going over the top isn't my problem mine is just returning the club to actually hit the ground at the end this helped. Slowing down the motion helped me realize my left hip was going more forward and right than forward and turning my body by contact. I can hit a fade, I can hit a draw. My problem is, my consistency is 10x better with an OTT swing. As soon as I attempt to hit draws, my consistency drops dramatically, and my mis-hit is heavy strikes. Is there a drill to fix that? Or do I simply need to just practice the swing more.

      If your ball striking results and scoring with the OTT swing are satisfactory to you, then there's no harm in playing it. Otherwise, yes - it's going to take time and work to eliminate that ingrained move and build in consistency with a properly shallowed path.

      Lets see how that extremely short, fast and violent backswing holds up long term. JR has definitily earned his just due but plenty of players have done the same and then completely disappear.. Time will tell if he can really control his emotions. Lets see if it last through some ups and downs and God forbid his very average genetics and a hankering for huge food portions come back to haunt him. That swing wont be confused for Ben Hogan's maybe not even Hulk Hogan's but he does deserve his day. Lot's of people want to just declare JR as the best European ever and call his golf very " Tigeresque" but everybody needs to come back down to earth and stop disrespecting the impacts and accomplishment of others before him. If he misses the cut in his next tournament the same people that say he has already eclipsed Seve and Faldo will then compare him to Ian Baker Finch and Ian Woosnam .Maybe people should keep Rory's career in mind. If he never wins a major again and now its about 9 years, even though he still would have had a great career will be looked at as somewhat disappointing and that his legacy was built on nothing more than a couple year hot streak in which he peaked at 25 years of age.

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  Рік тому +2

      I'm glad to learn of your improvement, John!
      As Graham indicates in his reply, your issue could be related to something in your setup, and ball position is certainly a simple element to experiment with prior to diving into any swing interventions. Beyond that, oftentimes when golfers are hitting everything well except for the longer clubs - which is quite normal early in the swing change process as a golfer gets used to applying the weight-forward concept to the fairway woods and driver - it can be attributed to one of the following:
      1) Their hips are not continuing their lateral slide through impact. This is common with the longer clubs as the wider stance means that the hips have a greater distance to travel. If the hips stop moving laterally towards the target on the downswing then their rotation takes over, inhibiting any further necessary forward weight loading (we should be 80/20 forward halfway down, 90/10 at impact, and 95/5 in the finish), changing the low point and rerouting the club into a steeper angle of attack. This can produce a variety of undesirable contact and ball flight results. Here are a couple of lessons related to this:
      - ua-cam.com/video/dB4ItR3guGU/v-deo.html
      - ua-cam.com/video/I5XYgKopTb4/v-deo.html

    Hi Tom, I like this thought but have a question. In this video you are saying the think about moving the butt of the club along the "string", rather than thinking about the lower body initiating the downswing sequence as in some of your other videos. Do you think it is better to think lower body and just allow the hands to shallow on their own, or to think about the path of the hands or butt of club when coming down? I am guessing whatever works best is the answer, but would appreciate your take, thanks!

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  11 місяців тому

      Good question, Tom, and you're pretty much on the right path to the answer. I do my best to convey multiple “feels” or thoughts throughout the swing wherever possible. We're all different physiologically and psychologically, and something that resonates effectively with one golfer may not necessarily work for another. However, no matter the variety of suggested feels/thoughts offered for a particular element of the swing, they are all directed at getting different golfers to achieve the desired positions, motions, and ball striking results. I am struggling with ball position using stack and tilt method. Is it still the same ie 7 8 9 W in the middle then edge the ball position forward with 6 5 4 fairway. Or are they all in the middle and widen stance 🤔

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  Рік тому +1

      You have some leeway with ball position. There is the simplicity of keeping it consistent relative to the inside of the lead heel and adjusting the stance width depending on the length of the club. Alternatively, we can start with a ball position that is in the middle of the stance for short irons, two balls inside the lead heel for middle irons, and incrementally more forward for the longer clubs - the farthest forward being even with the inside of the lead heel for the driver (again, with the stance width increasing as we move from shorter to longer clubs). From there we can make incremental tweaks to see how different positions affect impact quality and shot shape.

      Hi Jonathan,
      It's really a matter of what performs best for you. In other words, my own personal "feels" are not relevant to you because they are unique to me. 😎 Beyond that, they do change quite regularly as I'm always thinking about new possibilities for my lesson content. This is why I do my best to convey multiple feels or thoughts throughout the swing wherever possible. That is one reason why the comprehensive, step-by-step, position-by-position learning platform of my online school is so effective, and as such I strongly recommend it to anyone who truly wishes to get on the proper path towards owning this swing as it will make for a far more efficient and enjoyable learning process rather than haphazardly trying to piece things together through my UA-cam content. Hi Tom can’t someone imagine for each and every swing that they are consistently pressing ‘the string’ specifically in the middle of their club’s handle using the little finger of their trail hand to do it throughout their entire swinging of their club? If they are swinging their club head by applying consistent pressure with their trail little finger in the middle of their handle, their club will automatically shallow itself and the golfer could not possibly go OTT. Correct?
    I never ask a question I don’t have the answer to. Ha ha. Cheers. 👍😃⛳️🥂

    Just out of curiosity I literally just watched the video where the toe is not facing up as you start your back swing. Do we still implement the perpendicular club face to make sure we get solid contact at impact to shoot the ball straight?

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  Рік тому

      If we pre-establish the connections properly in the setup and have a foundational base that facilitates a full centered turn without restriction, then once we've ingrained the correct actions through sequential drilling and repetition we can entrust the motion to the big muscles and allow the arms, wrists, hands, and club to simply go along for the ride and respond accordingly as if on autopilot. The power accumulators - including the proper wrist action - will then naturally load and fire with no contrived manipulations or precise timing necessary, thereby returning the face to the position pre-established at address. It's called "giving up control to gain control", and it's the formula for consistently blissful ball striking and seemingly effortless power. Here are a few lessons on this topic:

      My pleasure, Heath!
      We prescribe that the hands be even with the inside of the lead thigh at setup, with the club shaft and lead arm forming a straight line from the face-on view. The amount of forward shaft lean is determined by ball position. We start with our weight forward (generally 55/45 for the short and mid irons, 60/40 for the longer clubs), gradually add more forward weight to the top (70/30), 80/20 halfway down, 90/10 impact, and 95/5 finish.

      I do the same. My ride dominant side seems to push my right shoulder slightly out toward the ball causing OTT. The visualization is the same on the downswing. But, the hit at the ball tension causes that dang OTT. When I can relax and feel like my hands are just along for the ride, it does wonders for my swing path. But I can't seem those that tension when it creeps in!

      Yep. Savor the flavor, Alan!
      Sure - we can try to build a "swing" that is a randomly assembled compilation of band-aids, patches, and quick fixes which will not hold up over time or the pressures of play. Or, we can embrace a robust system that conforms to the unchanging realities of Physics, Geometry, and data from the game’s best golf ball strikers. Now, could someone deploy one of these tips to field dress a swing wound? Absolutely. However, it will ultimately serve them far better - and will stand the test of time and pressure - if they adopt and commit to the system in its entirety.
      Keep up the great cooking!

    The biggest problem is golfers look for the lag feeling from the top, the lag feeling shouldn’t come until the hands drop , or you could say after the first 1/4 of the downswing. Lag should feel a bit like the club shaft being straightened by left hand powered by the hips from halfway down to impact. If you start the lag feeling from the top it’s gone immediately.

      HI Martyn,
      I'd suggest making sure your ball position is not too far back in your stance prior to getting into any swing intervention. Beyond that there are a number of variables that can cause pushes and pulls, and if I give you the wrong one then it may only serve to exacerbate the issue and be detrimental to your overall swing. Video of your swing will help you to immensely if you wish to try to self-diagnose.

      @SagutoGolf  Рік тому

      Indeed I am, Anthony. I’m using JumboMax Ultralite grips in extra-large. I wanted to give them a try for a few reasons, including the fact that DeChambeau uses them and we share similar swing philosophies. Since then, I haven't looked back. These grips keep my hands much quieter - which I personally prefer. Also, since my fingers don't wrap all the way around and dig into my palms, I'm not triggering any forearm tension or activating arms muscles that may otherwise have a tendency to take control of the swing.
      The Jumbos are not necessarily for everyone - and my fingers are a bit longer than average - so I routinely tell folks to "try before you buy." However, having a properly-sized grip that feels both comfortable and secure is critically important as it is our only connection to the object that is going to deliver us blissful joy or deep anguish, yet it is perhaps also the most overlooked equipment fitting component in golf.

    I actually worked on this yesterday, my 1st time out for the season. While I hit 75% fairways and my aim was 90% throughout the bag, I lost 50 yds+ with driver and every other club distance was way diminished. I felt like I had no flow to my swing and it seemed overly mechanical. It was only 50* out, so I expected some degradation of distance, but not that much. Help!

      So your first time out - in the cold - and without previously practicing this you hit 75% of your fairways and 90% of your shots were on your intended lines? And you're complaining because distance was down?? Of course it is; it's a brand new, untrained motion! that your brain and body don't know or trust yet!
      We ingrain the motions through proper practice and drilling, and in doing so over time we then learn to entrust our swing to the far more powerful big muscles instead of trying to micromanage it with the hands and arms. Once we get to that point we are bound to experience significant improvements in distance, accuracy, and consistency. It's called "giving up control to gain control", and it's the formula for consistently blissful ball striking and seemingly effortless power.

Anybody that hits 75% of fairways 1 time let alone the first time on say a par 70-72 course in addition accuracy at 90% wouldnt be talking with such an extreme amount of naivitivity.. God bless you for believing random comments but as for someone who really knows the effort it takes to get somewhat better let alone getting actually good this can be smelled from far far away.Most people that watch a video and in 24 hours shoot career rounds are either business partners or paid help. Funny how many people make these huge leaps and bounds with their games with just a few minutes of instruction with info that is very common and not some trailblazing technique. I did think you communicated the information very well and used simple terms to paint the picture of your lesson which allows players to grasp your concept. The reality is most people have false feelings when trying different things and often believe they are feeling the big changes yet they are repeating the same moves. Without video analysis and in most cases information conveyed by an in person teacher drastic changes never,ever,never ,ever come close to happening. I enjoy the growth of your channel from day 1 to professional product you produce today . Keep it up but maybe once somebody would just say that their swing felt so weird and shot 20 shots higher but believed the info so much that they endured 2 weeks of ground balls at the range but its finally paying off an leading to better swing feels and even better scores. Just once would be nice. Comment section is where the miracles happen and happen often.

      Hi Waylon,
      It's very difficult for me to diagnose your issue without actually seeing your swing. I would suggest that you should first default to checking your setup before considering any kind of swing intervention. For example, if your ball position is too far forward with your irons then that could result in a path that is coming across the ball from the outside. The same could be the case if your hands are too far back. Beyond that, perhaps you are not getting sufficient lateral hip action in your downswing with the irons.
