You grow girl! You have been keeping yourself busy this winter with all your little projects and planning! Can’t wait to see updates on this and follow along with your outdoor adventures this summer 💚
Hi Pam, i have quite a collection of cacti and succulents but i have never actually grown any from seeds as i was once told that this is a lengthy process. However, watching your video just now has inspired me to try this procedure. Thanks so much for sharing this knowledge👍😊.
Oh man they sprouted so quickly! I need to re try because mine I started almost a month ago haven’t done shit. I really loved this and can’t wait to see the update!
YAH! I cannot wait! I live in AZ & have NEVER seen a Sagauro as a baby!!! I am sooo excited! 2 Thumbs Up! I hope all of them flourish!!! Have an awesome day!
OMG!! That stuff is expensive and I bought it to start my new seedlings last winter to only have our house filled up with gnats and I thought I did something wrong! I'm learning that I should bake my soil to kill off gnats.
They are cute little babies. Wow they germinated fast. My son went to Joshua Tree National park after a good rain and all sorts of desert flowers were in bloom. He bought me a little plant kit to grow Joshua Trees. I am going to plant them in the spring.
Thank you for making this video. I decided to order some cactus and succulent seeds only to realize I had no clue what to do with them once I got them lol. Now I'm off to plant my little seeds. ❤
I use the same kinds of takeout food containers for cactus seeds too! Been doing it for years. I don't poke holes in the container though and usually just use regular potting soil mixed with a bit of pumice or perlite. I sterilise the soil in the microwave and leave the seeds in the containers with the lids sealed for usually at least a couple months with heating mats or otherwise keeping the temp around 80 degrees. I leave them in there as long as possible. If mould breaks out I use a water/hydrogen peroxide or diluted antifungal spray it on there quick then close the lid again but there is usually not any mould problem. I can mostly just forget about them and peek in once a week or so or whenever and they usually grow very quickly like this if all goes well.
I love cactuses I have dragon fruit cactuses and several small flowering cactus veriaties in a big container they are so easy to grow and have such pretty flowers on the small ones and massive flowers in the dragon fruit
Very cool! I didn't know you could buy a variety pack of seeds like that! I like the little red ones. Also it's good to see someone else using up-cycled plastic food containers for this kind of thing. Most of my plant pot saucers are old microwave dinner containers. Well done.
Those baby cacti are precious!.. why are most tiny things the best? It'll be fun to watch the progression over time! I hope you're having an awesome day my sweet friend! :)
Thank you for this. I'm planting mine today! Excited for quick results like yours even though I truly appreciate the patience planting seeds nurtures within us.

Oh I’m so glad! If you can’t bear to wait I will tell you I knocked that whole ass tray over at one point about 7 months in and had to put that back in and almost all of them lived. 😅
Love your cacti bad assery, Pam! 😎👍🌵 Hoffman Cactus Mix is worth a look. Lots less crap in it and I find it holds and drains moisture better than Branches Bugs and Gold. I also had a mini panic attack watching your finger so close to that hole puncher! 😵🚑😂
@@PamsPrettyPlants when I started mine I got some of that bird sand but humidity is tuff with just sand.... I use salad trays clear plastic... I mix a sand... Tiny bit of clay... Forest sand... Great video, the lil’ cacti are so cute. A tip on putting holes in takeout containers: use a lighter to heat up the awl or whatever you’re using and it makes a really nice hole with no cracking. You can also use the meltiness of it to make the hole pretty much any size you want.

Hi Donna! Thank you so much! ZellaJake Farms on Etsy has a good mixed pack of cactus seed for cheap and I’ve also found them at hardware stores with the flower seeds.
Thanks so much for your tips on sprouting cactus from seeds. Your techniques worked very well and within a week I had lots of baby sprouts. My question is now how do I keep them alive. Some of them are turning brown, and clear and are no longer green. I don’t know whether I’m watering them too much, not enough, or if a fungus is involved. Thanks for any suggestions and I’ll be happy to send you a photo if that is helpful. Have a great day!

Thank you for the video. It's very informative. Your baby cacti are very cute!! 🥰 I'm also growing cacti from seeds. I have a question. I started growing cacti in July. They germinated pretty well. The winter has come. In this case, do you still need a heat mat even after they are in our house? My usual room temperature is 65-70 degrees.
Hi! It does need to stay moist, I just didn’t happen to have to add any water because my container stayed nice and moist with the lid on. I’m sure direct sunlight would be sufficient, it just might take a little longer than mine did. I’ve noticed LED lights and heating mats just generally speed most things up and get high germination rates. But that doesn’t mean you NEED them. Hope this is helpful! I’m going to do a part two to this video with some of the questions I’ve gotten so thanks for yours!
I did an update on a live stream once but I’m not sure if I ever did a “part 2” They grow really, really slow so they’re about the size of a dime or nickel now. I potted them up after a year and a half I believe, just into a small clay pot with cactus soil and they’re doing great.
@@PamsPrettyPlants Thank you! Well the seeds are growing and they have little thorns or I don't know how to call it but I'm worried about the transplant to a bigger pot and the soil. Thanks again. I really enjoyed this video.
@joselynrosario5265 they’re pretty resilient, don’t stress too much! I picked out the biggest ones, some just never really grew while others did, so I tossed the stalled out ones and kept the winners. I waited until they were about pea sized and used tweezers to make a little hole in dampened cactus soil and then to gently move them. Diluted fertilizer here and there helps too in bulking them up some. I’m a chronic under waterer and they’re held up great so just don’t over water and you should be just fine! Good luck!
I've not long bought a kit myself, got a few pots going in a tank with a heating mat. I'm just wondering how often i should spray them. the tank is keeping in a lot of water so its very humid.
This was very helpful! My mom bought the same pack if seeds and was talking about planting them soon, but has no lights, lol. So it wouldn't be feasible for her to do it now as temps are in the 50s this week. I've shared this video with her so maybe she'll get some tips from you!
You wouldn't need that heating pad if you lived in Arizona! 🤗🤗🤗 Was rather surprised at the thorns on some of them. At such an early stage. Are they soft or dangerous?
Do you continue the 12 hrs light on 12 off the entire year. Do you use the warning mats the entire year too. I’m just now getting into planting succulents from seeds and am having lots of trial and error stuff going on. I am trying brain cactus’s and it is tough!!! Any help would be appreciated.
Sorry I missed your comment, sometimes I find more on the computer than I do on my phone! I don't get very fussy with light times but generally its 12/12 during germination and 10 (on)/14(off) is another go-to for maintenance but sometimes I dont feel like resetting my timer and stuff stays on 12/12 for ages. I haven't noticed much difference. As for the warming mat, that's only for germination, it tends to dry out the soil quickly and it's not really necessary. You might find it useful after germination if you have your plants in a very cold room but overall I just use mine for germination.
Once they’ve got their first leaves you can go ahead and take them off the mat. I only use the mats for germinating the seed, after that you’ll just end up watering more unnecessarilyz
My cacti have spikes but my soil also has dark mold on top. Is that normal? I put some horticultural charcoal on top which I had around and I'm hoping that will help.
If they have the spikes you can start acclimating them to having the lid off and drying out and that should help with the mold! Scraping it off helps too
I kept the lid on for the first month and I don’t even think I had to water it until I started taking the lid of here and there to acclimate them, now I use a turkey baster to water them cause I broke my spray bottle and that’s how I water my seed trays without getting leaves wet when I let them dry out too much to bottom water, which is always. Happy planting!!! I’m excited for you
Hi Dom, I believe I used my 8x8 LED panels initially, but right now and for the last year they’re under some inexpensive smaller LED panels from Amazon and doing great so I don’t think it matters too much as long as you’re getting some full spectrum bright light on them! These are the ones I have: amzn.to/3S0XmsF
No, I’d say I kept it on for about a month until I felt like all the seeds that were gonna germinate had, and they all had some little spikes. Then I started to leave the lid ajar more and more over the course of a week or two to acclimate them before leaving it off entirely.
@@PamsPrettyPlants Wow! Thank you! I was going to assume when they hit the lid in growth! Like the acclimate part. Great tip! Mine are planted. Subscribed!
I used a seedling heat mat for the germination process until it seemed most of the seedlings had popped up. After that they just had the light warmth of the growlights and nothing fancy.
Thank you for a reply back I bought a propagator today and sow my cacti seeds but wasn’t sure if I was to leave it switched on all the time as I says they can take up to 3 months to germinate 🤷🏼♂️
@@PamsPrettyPlants Thanks again ☺️ not had much luck growing cacti seeds in the past but fingers crossed this time now with the propagator who knows? will keep you posted 👍🏻
Hi, I need to know information after the seeds germinate ? When I remove the cover ? When I stop keeping the soil moist , and only water when the soil is dry ? Plese , I need help.
Hello! So I kept the cover on until I felt like most of the seeds had germinated, (that took around 3-4 weeks total), after that I started taking the cover off for the day and then putting it back on. Once you acclimate them this way for a week or so you could totally leave the cover off for good. I have kept the lid on, but not snapped on, just resting a little diagonal across the top to retain some moisture but also give them some air. Mostly just because I’m lazy and don’t want to water a lot 😂 Honestly don’t stress, they seem really hardy once they’ve got their little spikes, they’ll just need watering like a typical houseplant for their first year from what I understand. Then you can repot them and treat them more like the mature cacti. Desert Plants of Avalon has a TON of videos on cacti from seed too if you want to do some more research. I’m new to this too, so I’m learning as I go! I hope this helps! 💚
Repot With Me | Ecuagenera Plants, Baby Cacti ua-cam.com/video/-d_TrgVl0C0/v-deo.html There’s a time stamp in the description so you can skip to that part (long video)
I think they got 12 on and 12 off most of their life so far, but I have given them 16 on when they were with my veggie starts. You can do 12-16 on with most stuff that likes sun.
You can use the warmth to germinate them, not grow them. You need light to grow them. I don’t know what happens when you don’t have a grow light (I haven’t tried it and I have no idea what your available light is like). These are plants accustomed to blazing desert sun so it’s pretty important to give them enough light and warmth.
I just kept the lid on for a few weeks and never had to water it. Just like with any plant it’s kind of a “when it needs it”, they should stay nice and moist and humid for their first couple of months and after that I kinda neglected them and they did just fine drying out between waters.
Only if you’re putting them outside I would think? Inside doesn’t matter, just mind the watering as it’ll take longer to dry out in winter and of course you will prob need supplemental light.
Do you leave the lid closed for an entire month without watering them? After one month, do you leave the lid off completely? How often and how much water would they need after the first month?
Hey Taylor! I did leave the lid on for at least a month and I don’t think I watered at all. If I did it was only once with a spray bottle. The mix stayed pretty damp! But you’ll want to watch it as your experience might be different. From what I’ve read and gleaned from smarter people, it’s really the first year that they need more moisture, like a tropical houseplant, and once they’ve reached a year old they can be repotted and treated more like a mature plant. Definitely check out Desert Plants of Avalon too, she does a lot of videos on starting cacti from seed. I’m still new to this but so far so good with mine! They’re pretty resilient!
@@PamsPrettyPlants i guess they would have to be resilient considering what they need to do to survive in desert conditions. I wonder how many make it in the wild. 1-2%? Probably less.
So your basically MOTHER NATURE!!!🌿💚🌿😎😎😎

If they have the spikes you can start acclimating them to having the lid off and drying out and that should help with the mold! Scraping it off helps too
How often do you moisten the soil for these guys? Do you mist it or water it like an adult plant?
I kept the lid on for the first month and I don’t even think I had to water it until I started taking the lid of here and there to acclimate them, now I use a turkey baster to water them cause I broke my spray bottle and that’s how I water my seed trays without getting leaves wet when I let them dry out too much to bottom water, which is always. Happy planting!!! I’m excited for you
what lamps do you use?
Hi Dom, I believe I used my 8x8 LED panels initially, but right now and for the last year they’re under some inexpensive smaller LED panels from Amazon and doing great so I don’t think it matters too much as long as you’re getting some full spectrum bright light on them! These are the ones I have: amzn.to/3S0XmsF
Do you basically keep the lid on during the whole duration of the entire year!? Thanks. Great video.
Subscribed!
Hello do you keep the heat on them all the time in the propagator?
I used a seedling heat mat for the germination process until it seemed most of the seedlings had popped up. After that they just had the light warmth of the growlights and nothing fancy.
Thank you for a reply back I bought a propagator today and sow my cacti seeds but wasn’t sure if I was to leave it switched on all the time as I says they can take up to 3 months to germinate 🤷🏼♂️
That’s what I’d read too so I was so surprised when they popped up in a couple of days! Good luck with your seeds!
Mostly just because I’m lazy and don’t want to water a lot 😂
Honestly don’t stress, they seem really hardy once they’ve got their little spikes, they’ll just need watering like a typical houseplant for their first year from what I understand. Then you can repot them and treat them more like the mature cacti.
Desert Plants of Avalon has a TON of videos on cacti from seed too if you want to do some more research. I’m new to this too, so I’m learning as I go! I hope this helps! 💚
You helped me alot . Thank You. Kind Regards
Can you give an update on the seedlings 🌱 cactus 🌵 🙏

There’s a time stamp in the description so you can skip to that part (long video)
@@PamsPrettyPlants thank you
So how long do you give them light for as seedlings I’ve heard mixed ideas on it and I just planted mine today
I think they got 12 on and 12 off most of their life so far, but I have given them 16 on when they were with my veggie starts. You can do 12-16 on with most stuff that likes sun.
Pam's Pretty Plants thanks
I don't have a growing lamp and all that. Does it also work in normal bright light and in winter on top off the heater?
you mentioned I can grow these on top of my refrigerator? what if I don't have a grow light?
You can use the warmth to germinate them, not grow them. You need light to grow them. I don’t know what happens when you don’t have a grow light (I haven’t tried it and I have no idea what your available light is like). These are plants accustomed to blazing desert sun so it’s pretty important to give them enough light and warmth.
That said if you live somewhere warm you can do it outdoors!
@@PamsPrettyPlants Thanks!!
Ok THAT was cool.
It’s so fun and ADDICTING
how often do i water cacti after germination?
I just kept the lid on for a few weeks and never had to water it. Just like with any plant it’s kind of a “when it needs it”, they should stay nice and moist and humid for their first couple of months and after that I kinda neglected them and they did just fine drying out between waters.
It is okay we’re gonna use garden soil to germinate cactus?
I wouldn’t but you can try it!
Thank you
Does it matter what time of year to start planting cactus seeds?
Only if you’re putting them outside I would think? Inside doesn’t matter, just mind the watering as it’ll take longer to dry out in winter and of course you will prob need supplemental light.
@@PamsPrettyPlants ok thank you. I appreciate the response back.
Put the container right side up then poke holes. Add sand/grit to the soil you won’t have the gnats.
