    When dismantling a complex assembly, I was told to always put the loose bolts halfway back into their correct empty holes where possible when each subassembly has been separated. It takes a little more time, but it means that not only are the bolts never lost but you always know where they are supposed to go when you reassemble.

    I used to own a 2003 Honda Civic hybrid. It was the most underpowered gutless car I’ve ever driven, but I found it to be an interesting challenge to negotiate traffic and freeway on ramps.
    Eventually the IMA NiMh battery failed after about 7-8 years. Most of those years was when I lived in Dallas, so the battery suffered many brutally hot summers. Like he said, the battery draws cabin air to cool the cells then exhaust the air in the trunk. Because I would loose the engine auto stop feature, I never used air conditioning unless I had sensitive passengers. Running the AC would also cause a noticeable reduction of power when accelerating, and more importantly a drop in MPG! This certainly accelerated battery degradation since the cabin air temperatures was well over 120f in the summer. Plus when the car is parked out doors in the baking sun the battery is cooking for hours. For all its problems, I still achieved 44+ MPH for years of driving (and sweating) bliss.

    Hello professor, I recently encountered an issue with a Honda Fit Hybrid where the hybrid system does not enable. all systems checked manually and with a diagnostic autel dealer level tool, the only error returned is the "sunlight sensor circuit" (code is B1229) would this stop the hybrid drivetrain from initializing?

    What is a great scan tool for monitoring the batteries? I heard mention that you can monitor each individual battery with a scan tool but there was no mention about what scan tool to use.

    Great information. My coworker has a 2001 honda insight with standard transmission. I was telling him that his vehicle had a liquid cooled Inverter. I stand corrected. I haven’t looked further into this type of hybrid but do you explain how the Standard Transmission works with the Three Phase Motor and the Engine?

    Hello! Thanks for this professor. Definitely very clear and concise! I have a couple questions on the parts according to my issues (open to anyone who can answer this as well please).
    1. What symptoms can come about from a failed Inverter and failed Converter?
    2. If a brand new 12V battery is installed and it does not die out but reading less than full charge (car on or off), can you rule out the HV battery being the issue and now focus on the converter/inverter failing?

    i am interested in buying a Honda fit / jazz 2012 model hybrid. I can't find a proper site with knowledge one the following questions you are my only hope or someone else here with true knowledge.
    1)what gen is that model regarding its hybrid system and do you recommend buying it in general?
    2)how much will truly cost a batary pack. not the process of replacing but the battery it self hoe much?
    3)how can i check its battery cell condition before buying it?
    4)how long do they last those packs if you take care of their Temps and charging?

    I used this video as a guide to repair my 2012 Civic. Although not exactly the same it was close enough for me to remove the inverter and replace one of the IGBT units. The car ran fine, but 3 months later it appears that I might have the same problem again. I haven't inspected the inverter to verify. Both times it happened under braking, however you mention that it uses a rectifier in this situation. Would this damage the IGBTs? What would cause the inverter to go bad? I want to find the cure rather than treat the symptoms.
    Please help! This is getting expensive and time consuming!

    mine is Honda civic hybrid 1.3 IMA 2008 (2nd gen)
    problem is
    1.engine warning light came on rocker arm pressure switch(all is working fine like autostop,engine cruising at 40 speed but mileage"Mpg" was down side & after i take car 3000 rpm its limits and get jerking not going after 3000 rpm)
    i took my car in honda for engine light.they told me your engine harness was bad..in two to three places cuts found..it need to change whole engine harness.(it is too much expensive in india because only 300 units sold in india discontinued)
    but i dont understand why?? because honda mechanic showed me there are some problem in solenoid 4 switches.not too much wiring cuts only switches wires are cuts some i take it in my home
    and i try at home 1st i disconnected 12v accessory battery then IMA switch also.after an hour with safety tool i removed engine plastic cover and i change all four the switches wirings so............... 1st problem was cleared and engine light is gon.after this problem solved my IMA battery get more backup and also glass power windows are fastly close and headlights are more brighten and 3000 rpm also solved and mileage is too much better..but when my engine light gon two more lights are on 1.is ABS yellow light also red &
    2.transmission d also blinking
    currently this is the problem autostop is not working mpg is good enough
    ABS RED AND YELLOW LIGHT & TRANSMISSION D LIGHT BLINKING
    i was checked all things i scanned a car code was U0129 (Lost Communication with Brake System Control Module)
    i try to delete codes but its not deleted
    please help me please answar me........

    Hi, do you know what could be wrong if you lose communication with ima? I was driving through and I wasn't aware that I was going right into a speed bump and I just passed it very fast, a few minutes later the ima and the battery light came up and the vehicule wasn't charging, I took the car to a local mechanic to connect it to a scanner and it appears that it lose connection to the ima system, we erase it and the car is fine again... is the second time it happens and I'm scare that if I get into a another speed bump o a street hole it comes up again and the 12 v battery is charging ok... has anyone has experienced this ?

    @Weber Is there a signal wire that controls only the "power assist"? I'd like to find and cut that wire so that the whole system charges like it should but without draining (144v) battery power for electric assistance. In other words, I want to convert IMA to a regular 2007 Honda Accord(v6) with a giant 12v battery supply, with NO Power Assist. Is this possible? Thanks for your videos!

    Is it possible to replace a troublesome Mk1 144V LiMH battery with a Mk3 144V Li-Ion battery? Do the Li-Ion batteries have built-in voltage controllers (like a phone battery) or are they unprotected? Or, what would happen if you put 12 ordinary 12V lead-acid batteries in series (apart from taking up much more room)?

      No, the charging strategy is different for Li-Ion. 12V batteries in series would be very heavy and not charge currently either

    Hey Professor, I have an 05 civic hybrid, the hybrid high volt battery has died and I turned the bypass switch off and now he car runs on just gas and 12v system. Up till now no problems really, but lately the 12v battery is not being recharged, and I know that the inverter dc-dc converter is responsible for charging the 12v battery, im just curious, do I need the inverter only? Or the dc dc converter? Or the whole rig? Btw i have no plans of fixing the hybrid system, this car is used for work, and I’m just tryna keep it going at minimal cost possible. I appreciate any help!

    Is it possible to place a lithium ion battery setup in the 1st gen models or are they stuck with the nickel design?

      You are stuck. Li-Ion batteries have a different charge rate, control algorithm, voltage level, heating and cooling needs, etc.

    I have a Honda insight a 2009 model hybrid and at night when I drive 🚗 it during the trip the IMA light appears on the dashboard it appears when I have drive between 5 to 6 kilometer distance what does it means it is dangerous then what are the damage it can cause on the engine

    When I am driving and I lose the accelater the knocking produce but I again accelerate the became finished.

    At 37:40 you mention a capacitor module - shouldn't you check for a voltage there before touching the contacts? Also, when you had the protective gloves on, it seemed that it might be easy to touch something with your uncovered forearm? How about having a store of thin rubber surgical gloves to wear for the delicate disassembly?

    Congratulations for your channel, I really learn a lot here. I would like to share a recent situation, I bought a honda civic 1.3 hybrid and so far it's just a headache, I had to change the DC/DC converter because the bat 12v wasn't charging, now there's another problem and the honda mechanic has detected the problem as MCM (1B100-RMX-E05). I don't aproved because was so expensive. Then could you please give me a tip? I need to install an MCM in my vehicle, but my part is 1B100-RMX-E05 and I only found 1B100-RMX-E06, are they compatible?
    Is it necessary to update? If I buy the reused part of the end-of-life car. It will work?

    Sir..
    Is there any possibility to emits some amount of AC ripples in to Auxiliary battery from This DC to DC converter.
    Because i have case study that misfire counting and P0300 fault code. But no misfire to feel. Finally i found lot of high frequency noise on CAM, Crank sensors signals.
    Then i test auxiliary battery that i found over 730mV and over AC ripples on it.
    So i am stuck. where the battery get thta AC ripples. From DC to DC converter?
    Any inputs would be great.

      Thank you! It is a Brother P-Touch PT-7600. I use special "Strong Adhesive" label tape. You must clean all surfaces with brake spray cleaner before applying the label or it will fall off. Best wishes!

    08 Civic Hybrid, intermittent code for CEL (P15A5 Motor current sensor), took vehicle to dealer to have checked out, could not duplicate problem. Picked vehicle up and drove for 4-5 days not lights on running great. Light came back on same code, cleared code and drove 3-4 days no lights, now back on - tried checking all connections in IPU and under hood to motor sensor. what code be the problem where it intermittently does this. Need help with this, I know motor current sensor requires removal of transmission. Is the sensor the culprit?
