This irks me!! Ain't nothing I love more than wearing my lashes and having my big fro!! It's baddie asf 😍 but I had to see it for myself cuz I only saw natural hair with natural makeup. Like some of us wanna be glam with the hair that grows out of our scalp 🤦🏽♀️
I don't care about a baddie. I've been wearing my natural hair (no weaves, dyes, wigs) for 14 years. I've gotten better and more successful in every area of my life since.

natural hair will always make you stand out the most! it's a secret I've discovered that most haven't yet. a bw in her natural hair owns the room. especially if it's bigger or longer or at the very least, healthy. a small neat fro is absolutely stunning as well. natural hair just wins. unique beauty

I have literally never felt threatened by women who wear weaves. Ever. I don’t think that weaves truly flatter black women. The boring flat hair look with the greasy edges, has been over done so much all of them look exactly the same. Like robots. I actually enjoy the fact that I have a tapered fro. I always look amazing in pictures, and my tapered fro makes me look elegant, ethereal, natural, and sensual. The baddie look is so over manufactured that these women don’t even look real they look like artificial brat dolls. To some extent, I actually benefit from them all looking the same because it makes me stand out. I actually look forward to growing out my hair so in a world where everyone is fake, flat and boring, my hair will be home grown from my scalp and full of life.
I love this video. I just wanted to point out that another reason it's important to see and interact with your natural hair is that the state of your natural hair can be an indication of underlying medical health. When we don't interact with our natural hair, we sometimes don't notice some signs of poor health that others that understand their hair in it's natural state may notice.
So true! I went and got some lab work done just because I noticed my hair was thinning. If I didn’t interact with my natural hair, I wouldn’t of found out some vitamin deficiencies.

I love microlocs but I do believe hair that hangs long like that still gets a pass over fros and hair that grows outward and kinky instead of straight down. Microlocs often get the same love as braids and extensions due to their length, especially when long. Nevertheless, congrats on your growth!
I have microlocs that's past my shoulders and 2 years old but have seen a woman exactly like this when I went to Publix and I was in awe. She was thin and toned with butt length microlocs , looked like she was in her 30s or 40s, and I was like "I need to be her when I grow up"
I was struggling so bad with insecurities, not realizing they were wig induced. I threw all my wigs out 6 months ago & I have never felt more free & beautiful. I mostly wear my hair in a top puff. It’s absolutely stunning. So much better than wigs.

To be fair with regards to the male gaze, men find a variety of things attractive. Many of them persue and marry the same women they swear to hate. They claim to love natural hair, features and bodies. Then when the natural queen walks by, he makes fun of her or ignore her altogether for the insta baddie he calls fake. How many times have we seen a man point to a woman who has a face full of make up and call her a natural beauty lol😂
That used to be my experience early on. I was never enough. At that time, men were all about Hispanic women and black women who emulated out looked like them. I eventually got married to a man who loves me for me and all my natural hair lol, twists and all. Now I can't even go grocery shopping without black men trying to pick me up. I didn't change 😂😂

Then there are men who insist they love natural hair in public and will beg a woman to buy a lace front. Many women have been speaking out against the "we love natural hair" black men who are asking them to get wigs and relaxers. I've seen social experiments where a black woman will put a picture of herself with natural hair and one with a wig. The we hate wigs crowd will swipe right on her lace front and white men will love the natural hair most. Of course there are exceptions to the rule.

I’m 17 years old, and I’ve finally realized that I must learn to accept my natural hair. For me, I’ve always been insecure about the fact that my hair isn’t super long and my curls aren’t super defined. I used to wish that I either had straight hair or defined curls. My hair is more of a puff on my head (and my hairs also pretty fine textured), and it always made me feel bad when I only saw girls with the most beautiful thick curls in the natural hair community (back when I first started looking into it on YT). It led me down this path of trying to manipulate my hair to be a different way constantly, but honestly, I’m just tired of it. You’ve encouraged me to wear my hair as is and to stop the over-manipulation, wigs, and paying for braids all the time, and I thank you for that.
I big part of becoming comfortable is finding styles that work for your length currently. I'm always getting compliments when I try out new styles with cute accessories every week or so.
And our hair is literally an extension of our nervous system. Our hair has life to it thats why it defies gravity. Our hair also has melanin in it just how our skin does. And melanin absorbs the sun. So the melanin in our hair is absorbing the sun which makes us more intelligent! Our hair is way more than just hair. They try to make us hate it cause theres alot of good benefits to it. In all seriousness tho, I wonder how many black girls have some sort of image dysmorphia because of the way we have to constantly shape-shift just to conform to a certain beauty standard. This year I've given myself the challenge to only wear my natural hair for the next 3 months. I made this decision because the way I would feel when I would remove my wig was just wrong- that wigless version of me wasn't complete in my head. So messed up. I'm really learning a new way to see myself, very different experience- some days I feel absolutely beautiful, other days it's slightly hard ngl. So yes, I think I did have image dysmorphia and wouldn’t be surprised if other girlies felt the same. It got to a point when I had to face all my fears and realize that I was just brainwashed. I agree 100%. I think it's imperative that Black women wear their natural hair so we can normalize it and embrace our natural beauty/attract natural/kingly men (if thats what we want!). Black erasure is increasing. Mixed race actors are being called "Black this, Black that." 4C hair is literally non-existent in day to day life where I live (Boston). Everytime I go out, people stare, compliment, remark on my hair and I HATE IT lol like leave me alone. & we get to take back our time. We do not need to be twisted and braided out every day. A 3 day old twist out fresh out the bonnet and with a water spritz is a vibe! If I have last minute plans, I throw on some kinky clip ins and fluff those out too!
I got THE MOST compliments and advances from women and men when I wore my natural hair back in Summer 2022! It was crazy! No other hairstyle has ever gotten me that much attention and love. But I think it was because we never see the girls wearing it as much!! ❤
I’ve been natural since 2009. But after I had my son in 2017 I literally threw allll my wigs away. Mind you, I’m a cosmetologist. Been doing braids and weaves since I was in middle school. Now after my daughter in 2022…. I will never put weave in her hair nor relax it. She can do that when she’s of age; if she wants. But I want my children to know what real beauty is. I set the standard!! ❤

I love this message. I think social media is helping to push Eurocentric standards of beauty and black women are adopting those styles and normalizing it as if it's natural for people of African heritage. Our standards of beauty should not mimic what is natural to white women. I like to tell black people that our hair is something so unique and it's special because we each have our own individual crown atop our heads. Our hair textures defy gravity and grow up toward the sky while people who aren't so lucky have to contend with hair that reaches for the dirt and hangs limp.

When I first did my big chop 13 years ago, I received a lot of hate from men but a lot of love from women. It was such a freeing experience chopping my relaxed ends off and letting my hair naturally do what it wants! Men have called me masculine, and i felt the need to wear more makeup at first. Then, one day, i just stopped caring. I look younger when I wear my natural curls. I have never been big on weave, but I have done wigs/crochet. I have grown my hair out, silk pressed, and chopped it off twice more since. This isn't a phase or movement for me it's my life! The algorithm brought me to you. The enhancements that we add to ourselves are not what makes us beautiful. It’s being *confident* in one’s own skin is what truly makes us attractive. The only time I ever been referred to as unattractive, ugly, and other derogatory names was by insecure individuals. Because they couldn’t buy what made me attractive in bundles or in a bottle. They didn’t know what it meant to be confident and they only knew how to conceal.

I never realized until about a couple of months ago especially now that “being a baddie” is an aesthetic. As an older teenager close to adulthood it’s so easy to get hyper fixated on this aesthetic because it consumes you so much if you allow it too.
I needed this. As a natural hair creator I found myself hiding under wigs most of 2023. I gave myself alot of excuses- time, energy, texture etc. While some were valid I truly lost interest in dealing with my natural hair. Being a 4c girlie with thick full hair can be alot. I also had many bad natural hair experiences in 2023 so wigs became a “safe place”. When i dug deeper it was more than that- i liked the way I looked with straight long hair. Ive made a commitment to wear my hair out more this year and its so liberating. I love my wigs but I need a break!

I loveeee wearing my natural shrunk hair. I think it’s important to mention disabilities when discussing natural hair and confidence because even though I love my hair, lupus has affected my hairline so i opt for afro twists to try to cover it.
I’ve learned to love my hair past the “ugly phase” of dreads. I thank his for that phase in my young adulthood years because I grew to love my natural beauty/hair, I learned how to care for and style my hair (even without a retwist, and I don’t do baby hairs) and my confidence shot up once I realized that I am enough.

You are a real beauty!!! 😍 I have memories as early as 5yrs old get my hair washed, blow dried, occasionally hot comb (with stove top fire and an iron comb) but majority of the time braided. I always loved every step of the process of my Sunday pampering with my Auntie! 🤗 By that age my hair was nearly down to my bottom. I always known my own big poofy hair even now as an adult. Growing up I notice the changes in what was “the thing to do” or what was in. Before I graduated elementary school nearly all my class mates had relaxers and super thin hair. In middle school I saw too many girls my age with faces full of makeup and hair tracks glued in. High school more of the same and now as an adult in her mid 30s everyone looks the same to me with the bat wings dangling from eyelids, unnatural big butts, wigs glued onto heads EVERYDAY, same outfits from Shein and that other company. I always stand out when I’m in public because I have my own hair in it natural state, clean face no makeup, my natural body, my own style. I’m the one everyone is calling plain Jane, because I don’t have all that extra stuff on me. I get laughed at and made fun of for having my natural body, clean face , my own hair, and my own style, by other black people. What I would like other Black women who do wear their own hair and do not look like these man made women on social media to know is, there is no reason to allow the ugly comments to break you and give in to what others want to see you look like, because trust me, once you get behind the psychology of it all, you will understand what it is all about just like I did decade ago. Listen I’m glad you made this video. I don’t have a problem with my natural hair, I wear it 95% of the time but sadly I notice many Black women do. I’m glad this convo is still being had despite natural hair not being as popular as it was in the 2010s. I’ve been modeling for years, never had an issue attracting men that I also was attracted to (many men of all races love natural hair), I have always felt desired, confident, like a baddie and bold with my natural hair and I love looking exclusive with my afro! There’s something so special about natural hair and I’m glad it’s still being promoted despite wigs and weaves being more popular. Lastly, I love a wig here and there to switch it up, but natural hair is amazing, shrinkage, some annoyances and all lol. Also, I’m glad you mentioned club culture. A lot of this baddie culture ONLY exists in the urban entertainment industry and on social media and that’s it. Not to mention, the club is a terrible place to find quality men. Sure you might be able to get in a section because of pretty privilege, free drinks, but it doesn’t translate to real life the way people want. That’s the space and it is what it is. Women need to learn to get in where they fit in. Even in Miami, there is a desire for the baddie look at certain clubs in South Beach, but in more down to earth spots like Wynwood, natural women are more celebrated.

I've been natural since I was 14 and that process was very liberating for me. I am Afro-Latina so the notion of "Good Hair v Bad Hair" was/is a very big thing. I used to think my hair was "bad" because it didn't do what my mother or my cousins hair did. I relaxed it a lot until I started to learn how to do my own hair. I did experiment with a sew in (first and LAST time) later on after I graduated high school and my hair broke off when I took it down so I big chopped then just kept my natural hair lol. I have locs now and I feel my most authentic self with them! I agree with every thing you said about the uniqueness and beauty of our natural hair...I just wish more of us did too :/
I’m not a big wig and weave wearing woman but when I first went natural I only wore my hair out in braids. Once I got past the awkward length stage which chin length I wear my hair out all the time.
There's nothing wrong with wearing box braids, cornrows or twist.... because they're Afrocentric hair styles. The problem is wearing waves and white/ Asian women hair that doesn't belong naturally belong to black women.
Yes, why not stand out and wear the hair that grows out of our scalp. Since I have stopped relaxing my hair, I have gotten so many compliments. Oddly enough, I have strangers ask if its actually my hair. "It is my hair, kinks and all". I have always shampooed my hair weekly, but twice weekly has proven to be beneficial. I finger coil my strands which takes about two hours; It takes about 30 minutes to dry. Afterwards, I wake up and lift my kinks and get on with the day. I absolutely feel the freedom, come rain, wind, or sunshine.
Thank you for making this much needed content! Weaves and wigs have unfortunately had a lot of black women in a chokehold to the point where for some it has created a distorted self image. Most do not recognise it as such when the status quo dictates that to wear anything else would appear "unpalatable" especially in the corporate world and in the dating pool. I really do believe in there being such a thing as a natural "baddie", where a woman's true beauty radiates her essence and is deeply rooted in self-care and self-preservation.

I really started wearing my natural hair more throughout the year to the point wear if I do wear straight hair I actually feel I look weird 😅 Like it takes time for me to adjust to the way I look. But what you said about black people being the only people that have type 4 hair is something I also embrace as our unique feature. And it’s so true how much people really love natural hair in real life. I always get compliments from all races and they always gaze into my hair. It’s almost as if type 4 is magnetic… most likely because it’s so rare to see it be worn. Especially if you know how to style it too!

I’ve been natural for 13 ish years, 3 big chops lol and now sporting micro locs I did myself. I absolutely love them. I was at the mall on the wealthy side of town recently and noticed so many men (non bm mostly) breaking their necks to check me out. I honestly feel I look better without the wigs. I'm 17, north african, and I've struggled with my hair alot, especially since i grew up in a country where most people who had straight hair were constantly praised for it in opposite of those who don't, and I have 3b hair, it's frizzy and hard to take care of, but reci've been tryning to embrace it in all it's states, instead of always straitening it, mind you, it used to take me 2 hours to straighten each time and it burned my hands by the end of it. so, yeah, great video! ❤

Aswiti means it is sweet. I live in Suriname. We speak nederlands(dutch) and sranan tongo(a mix of english, african and dutch) and in sranan tongo your last name means It Is Sweet. Good topic. It will be a looooong strech of road though for us black women to finally get it. I have been natural all my life. Sometimes i do wigs, braids but often i wear my natural hair in a style that looks like micro locks/sister locks. I flippin' love it and i attract a different type of men. Not the stingy ones as many assume. I am a very expensive woman. Life in itself is expensive so there is no way around it. I always attract providers(though this is not the topic). I say this because there is a notion that you are cheap when you wear the hair god has given you and therefor will attract broke or stingy 50 50 men. I think that it would be nice if you made a video on that and the types of men you attract personally and how they treat you.

Thank you for sharing this! I love this. I wish more black women would embrace this and realize in the words of Indie Arie, “I am not my hair.” It took me awhile. I never wore weave or wigs. It’s just not me but I did have a relaxer for many years as a younger woman. It’s work too and I got to a point of wanting to stop paying the money for damaging my hair. It’s definitely a journey but it’s worth it. It’s the hair God gave me 🙏🏽 My husband likes natural hair. He despises wigs and weaves. It’s my perception that too many black women look TOO MADE UP! It looks unreal and basically it is because it’s unnatural.
I think it’s mainly bc we are held to a higher standard of beauty than our non-black counterparts, and the data shows that we spend more $$$ on beauty products collectively as a race. It’s okay for us to not be looking absolutely perfect all the time! And for a lot of us, looking perfect ≠ wearing our natural hair.
Loveeeed this video. I feel confident in my hair sometimes but not all the time, when I have shrinkage I do feel like I look like a child, so I want to always keep it stretched but the humidity never agrees with that. It is a struggle, but this year I've decided to at least stop hiding behind braids, twists, and faux locs. I want to get out of feeling like my hair has to be long to be beautiful. I've always had medium length and long hair but when it shrinks I don't feel my hair looks as good. Unleanring this, this year! I never considered a wig because the maintenance looks like sooo much work to only look good for a couple days.

I am very confident in my natural hair; it is my norm as I only had a relaxer for four years during high school, and I am early 40s now. I used to wear my hair flat ironed consistently for years, but for the past 6 or 7 years, unstraightened and completely natural in the way it grows from my scalp. In regards to men, one of my personal pet peeves is that men come up tome all the time and compliment me on my hair. Men are always saying how much they like my hair and how good it looks. Why is this a pet peeve? Because before, when I used to wear my hair flat ironed, men used to approach me and tell me I was beautiful and that I am so pretty, now it is just my hair. It has gone from me, as a whole woman, being deemed as beautiful, to now one single part of me being compartmentalized and noticed. For me, it is similar to a woman consistently being complimented on her fat @$$ in the sense of compartmentalization. I have sometimes questioned myself in thinking that perhaps I’m overthinking this, but women, also, of all ethnic backgrounds compliment my hair. And my hair IS gorgeous,beautiful, unique, and eye catching…but I would like to not feel like I am reduced to just disembodied hair walking around on legs. I am a collection of really beautiful features and characteristics.

I came across this video when you first posted it and I think it sparked something in me. Im technically natural but would always wear silk presses or braids. Fast forward to now, I recently just said F it! Did a mini chop and been wearing natural styles (twist outs and wash and gos). I felt the need to push myself to feel confident in my natural hair. And Ive been getting a lot of compliments and I just feel good!

I am currently on my journey of wearing my hair out now as I am tired of buying wigs. I had to literally unlearn all the backhanded compliments, etc when it comes to my hair. Just to name a few (this is your hair? or i thought your hair was fake or you really want to cut off all this good hair?). I have shaved my hair 4 times and last year was the last time. I just washed my hair to prep for dinner tomorrow and I never seen my hair grow this much now that I am cherishing my plant(hair). I never noticed how attractive I was until I looked at myself and then I would get random compliments from strangers more. It's such a beautiful journey and way of life to just be and love every aspect of you.
Wigs are def an investment over time but the hair underneath is always gonna be there. Good for you for loving your hair and learning it on this journey.

I have natural curly hair I always used to wear my hair unapologetically in high school with my fro and as I grew older I got into the weaves but I had that exact same thought I don’t want to look like everyone else natural is better less is more , and my fro is a fashion statement for me , 🖤
I get keratin treatments and straighten my hair, partly because I was sick of the nasty or backhanded comments from people at school, whether they disliked me and were trying to laugh at me, or coming from my so called friends. But also because I didn't like my hair myself. I'm mixed race but it's around a 4a, and it's very hard to keep detangled, soft, moisturised and frizz free. I went natural for around 2 years and consumed lots of UA-cam content about caring for my hair type but I was miserable, especially with having to wet it every morning to detangle and get rid of frizz. Now I only straighten it every 1-2 weeks on wash day, and use a blow out brush to do my fringe in a morning and occasionally brush through for 5 mins if inbetween washes it gets a lil frizzy. So it is a lot easier for me however the difference in how I am viewed, or treated when my hair is a certain way is like night and day. Will I keep it straight atm, yes! I have a 70s shag which I love and would never work with my natural hair (too short and big), however you have made some really interesting points. I used to wonder what all the fuss was about in embracing your natural hair as most of the white women I Know dye, straighten/curl/blow out daily, get treatments etc on their hair but I realise that its not out of conformity and a fear of ill treatment like it is for us mixed and black women. Thanks for this video, you've really made me think broader about this topic.

I have been natural my entire life (34 years) and I have never worn my hair in an Afro because I thought I looked more put together in braids. I have been wearing my hair “out” for the last 1 month because I had a set of braids that severely damaged my hair. So I vowed to give my hair a rest and get it back healthy until at least the summer. Tomorrow, I plan to wear my hair in an Afro because I’m tired of hiding my hair under wigs and clip ins ( which is also starting to damage my hair). Thank you for your inspiration! I have literally never felt threatened by women who wear weaves. Ever. I don’t think that weaves truly flatter black women. The boring flat hair look with the greasy edges, has been over done so much all of them look exactly the same. Like robots. I actually enjoy the fact that I have a tapered fro. I always look amazing in pictures, and my tapered fro makes me look elegant, ethereal, natural, and sensual. The baddie look is so over manufactured that these women don’t even look real they look like artificial brat dolls. To some extent, I actually benefit from them all looking the same because it makes me stand out. I actually look forward to growing out my hair so in a world where everyone is fake, flat and boring, my hair will be home grown from my scalp and full of life.

I just wanted to point out that another reason it's important to see and interact with your natural hair is that the state of your natural hair can be an indication of underlying medical health. When we don't interact with our natural hair, we sometimes don't notice some signs of poor health that others that understand their hair in it's natural state may notice.

I love microlocs but I do believe hair that hangs long like that still gets a pass over fros and hair that grows outward and kinky instead of straight down. Microlocs often get the same love as braids and extensions due to their length, especially when long. Nevertheless, congrats on your growth!

I have microlocs that's past my shoulders and 2 years old but have seen a woman exactly like this when I went to Publix and I was in awe. She was thin and toned with butt length microlocs , looked like she was in her 30s or 40s, and I was like "I need to be her when I grow up"
I was struggling so bad with insecurities, not realizing they were wig induced. I threw all my wigs out 6 months ago & I have never felt more free & beautiful. I mostly wear my hair in a top puff. It’s absolutely stunning. So much better than wigs.

That used to be my experience early on. I was never enough. At that time, men were all about Hispanic women and black women who emulated out looked like them. Many women have been speaking out against the "we love natural hair" black men who are asking them to get wigs and relaxers. I've seen social experiments where a black woman will put a picture of herself with natural hair and one with a wig. The we hate wigs crowd will swipe right on her lace front and white men will love the natural hair most. Of course there are exceptions to the rule.

I’m 17 years old, and I’ve finally realized that I must learn to accept my natural hair. For me, I’ve always been insecure about the fact that my hair isn’t super long and my curls aren’t super defined. I used to wish that I either had straight hair or defined curls. My hair is more of a puff on my head (and my hairs also pretty fine textured), and it always made me feel bad when I only saw girls with the most beautiful thick curls in the natural hair community (back when I first started looking into it on YT). It led me down this path of trying to manipulate my hair to be a different way constantly, but honestly, I’m just tired of it. You’ve encouraged me to wear my hair as is and to stop the over-manipulation, wigs, and paying for braids all the time, and I thank you for that.

So the melanin in our hair is absorbing the sun which makes us more intelligent! Our hair is way more than just hair. They try to make us hate it cause theres alot of good benefits to it. In all seriousness tho, I wonder how many black girls have some sort of image dysmorphia because of the way we have to constantly shape-shift just to conform to a certain beauty standard. This year I've given myself the challenge to only wear my natural hair for the next 3 months. I made this decision because the way I would feel when I would remove my wig was just wrong- that wigless version of me wasn't complete in my head. So messed up. I'm really learning a new way to see myself, very different experience- some days I feel absolutely beautiful, other days it's slightly hard ngl. But I'm sticking to my word and confronting any issues that arise day-by-day. Thank you for this video beautiful☺

So yes, I think I did have image dysmorphia and wouldn’t be surprised if other girlies felt the same. It got to a point when I had to face all my fears and realize that I was just brainwashed. I agree 100%. I think it's imperative that Black women wear their natural hair so we can normalize it and embrace our natural beauty/attract natural/kingly men (if thats what we want!). Black erasure is increasing. Mixed race actors are being called "Black this, Black that." 4C hair is literally non-existent in day to day life where I live (Boston). Everytime I go out, people stare, compliment, remark on my hair and I HATE IT lol like leave me alone. & we get to take back our time. We do not need to be twisted and braided out every day. A 3 day old twist out fresh out the bonnet and with a water spritz is a vibe! If I have last minute plans, I throw on some kinky clip ins and fluff those out too!

I’ve been natural since 2009. But after I had my son in 2017 I literally threw allll my wigs away. Mind you, I’m a cosmetologist. Been doing braids and weaves since I was in middle school. Now after my daughter in 2022…. I will never put weave in her hair nor relax it. She can do that when she’s of age; if she wants. But I want my children to know what real beauty is. I think social media is helping to push Eurocentric standards of beauty and black women are adopting those styles and normalizing it as if it's natural for people of African heritage. Our standards of beauty should not mimic what is natural to white women. I like to tell black people that our hair is something so unique and it's special because we each have our own individual crown atop our heads. Our hair textures defy gravity and grow up toward the sky while people who aren't so lucky have to contend with hair that reaches for the dirt and hangs limp.

Spot on commentary, sis! The IG baddies make a lot of people forget how natural women really look. When I first did my big chop 13 years ago, I received a lot of hate from men but a lot of love from women. It was such a freeing experience chopping my relaxed ends off and letting my hair naturally do what it wants!
Men have called me masculine, and i felt the need to wear more makeup at first. Then, one day, i just stopped caring. I look younger when I wear my natural curls. I have never been big on weave, but I have done wigs/crochet. I have grown my hair out, silk pressed, and chopped it off twice more since. This isn't a phase or movement for me it's my life!

The enhancements that we add to ourselves are not what makes us beautiful. It’s being *confident* in one’s own skin is what truly makes us attractive. The only time I ever been referred to as unattractive, ugly, and other derogatory names was by insecure individuals. Because they couldn’t buy what made me attractive in bundles or in a bottle. They didn’t know what it meant to be confident and they only knew how to conceal.

I never realized until about a couple of months ago especially now that “being a baddie” is an aesthetic. As an older teenager close to adulthood it’s so easy to get hyper fixated on this aesthetic because it consumes you so much if you allow it too.
I needed this. As a natural hair creator I found myself hiding under wigs most of 2023. I gave myself alot of excuses- time, energy, texture etc. While some were valid I truly lost interest in dealing with my natural hair. Being a 4c girlie with thick full hair can be alot. I also had many bad natural hair experiences in 2023 so wigs became a “safe place”. When i dug deeper it was more than that- i liked the way I looked with straight long hair. Ive made a commitment to wear my hair out more this year and its so liberating. I love my wigs but I need a break!

I’ve learned to love my hair past the “ugly phase” of dreads. I thank his for that phase in my young adulthood years because I grew to love my natural beauty/hair, I learned how to care for and style my hair (even without a retwist, and I don’t do baby hairs) and my confidence shot up once I realized that I am enough.

I started wearing wigs when I did my big chop but let’s be real, I live on an island.. it’s too dang hot to wear wigs all the time! I wear my hair in mini twists, braids, twist/braid outs, and low buns and head wraps. I love my hair so much. I have memories as early as 5yrs old get my hair washed, blow dried, occasionally hot comb (with stove top fire and an iron comb) but majority of the time braided. I always loved every step of the process of my Sunday pampering with my Auntie! 🤗 By that age my hair was nearly down to my bottom. I always known my own big poofy hair even now as an adult. Growing up I notice the changes in what was “the thing to do” or what was in. Before I graduated elementary school nearly all my class mates had relaxers and super thin hair. In middle school I saw too many girls my age with faces full of makeup and hair tracks glued in. High school more of the same and now as an adult in her mid 30s everyone looks the same to me with the bat wings dangling from eyelids, unnatural big butts, wigs glued onto heads EVERYDAY, same outfits from Shein and that other company. I always stand out when I’m in public because I have my own hair in it natural state, clean face no makeup, my natural body, my own style. I’m the one everyone is calling plain Jane, because I don’t have all that extra stuff on me. I get laughed at and made fun of for having my natural body, clean face , my own hair, and my own style, by other black people.
What I would like other Black women who do wear their own hair and do not look like these man made women on social media to know is, there is no reason to allow the ugly comments to break you and give in to what others want to see you look like, because trust me, once you get behind the psychology of it all, you will understand what it is all about just like I did decade ago. Listen I’m glad you made this video. I don’t have a problem with my natural hair, I wear it 95% of the time but sadly I notice many Black women do. I’m glad this convo is still being had despite natural hair not being as popular as it was in the 2010s. I’ve been modeling for years, never had an issue attracting men that I also was attracted to (many men of all races love natural hair), I have always felt desired, confident, like a baddie and bold with my natural hair and I love looking exclusive with my afro! There’s something so special about natural hair and I’m glad it’s still being promoted despite wigs and weaves being more popular. Lastly, I love a wig here and there to switch it up, but natural hair is amazing, shrinkage, some annoyances and all lol.
Also, I’m glad you mentioned club culture. A lot of this baddie culture ONLY exists in the urban entertainment industry and on social media and that’s it. Not to mention, the club is a terrible place to find quality men. Sure you might be able to get in a section because of pretty privilege, free drinks, but it doesn’t translate to real life the way people want. That’s the space and it is what it is. Women need to learn to get in where they fit in. Even in Miami, there is a desire for the baddie look at certain clubs in South Beach, but in more down to earth spots like Wynwood, natural women are more celebrated.

I've been natural since I was 14 and that process was very liberating for me. I am Afro-Latina so the notion of "Good Hair v Bad Hair" was/is a very big thing. I used to think my hair was "bad" because it didn't do what my mother or my cousins hair did. I relaxed it a lot until I started to learn how to do my own hair. I did experiment with a sew in (first and LAST time) later on after I graduated high school and my hair broke off when I took it down so I big chopped then just kept my natural hair lol. I have locs now and I feel my most authentic self with them! I agree with every thing you said about the uniqueness and beauty of our natural hair...I just wish more of us did too :/

I’m not a big wig and weave wearing woman but when I first went natural I only wore my hair out in braids. Once I got past the awkward length stage which chin length I wear my hair out all the time.
There's nothing wrong with wearing box braids, cornrows or twist.... because they're Afrocentric hair styles. The problem is wearing waves and white/ Asian women hair that doesn't belong naturally belong to black women.

Yes, why not stand out and wear the hair that grows out of our scalp. Since I have stopped relaxing my hair, I have gotten so many compliments. Oddly enough, I have strangers ask if its actually my hair. "It is my hair, kinks and all". I have always shampooed my hair weekly, but twice weekly has proven to be beneficial. I finger coil my strands which takes about two hours; It takes about 30 minutes to dry. Afterwards, I wake up and lift my kinks and get on with the day. I absolutely feel the freedom, come rain, wind, or sunshine.

Thank you for making this much needed content! Weaves and wigs have unfortunately had a lot of black women in a chokehold to the point where for some it has created a distorted self image. Most do not recognise it as such when the status quo dictates that to wear anything else would appear "unpalatable" especially in the corporate world and in the dating pool. I really do believe in there being such a thing as a natural "baddie", where a woman's true beauty radiates her essence and is deeply rooted in self-care and self-preservation.

I really started wearing my natural hair more throughout the year to the point wear if I do wear straight hair I actually feel I look weird 😅 Like it takes time for me to adjust to the way I look. But what you said about black people being the only people that have type 4 hair is something I also embrace as our unique feature. And it’s so true how much people really love natural hair in real life. I always get compliments from all races and they always gaze into my hair. It’s almost as if type 4 is magnetic… most likely because it’s so rare to see it be worn. Especially if you know how to style it too!

Thank you for this content! I love wigs BUT had to stop wearing them because I would get these awful headaches once I got home and removed them (lace and non lace). I’ve been natural for 13 ish years, 3 big chops lol and now sporting micro locs I did myself. I absolutely love them. I was at the mall on the wealthy side of town recently and noticed so many men (non bm mostly) breaking their necks to check me out. I honestly feel I look better without the wigs. I'm 17, north african, and I've struggled with my hair alot, especially since i grew up in a country where most people who had straight hair were constantly praised for it in opposite of those who don't, and I have 3b hair, it's frizzy and hard to take care of, but reci've been tryning to embrace it in all it's states, instead of always straitening it, mind you, it used to take me 2 hours to straighten each time and it burned my hands by the end of it. so, yeah, great video! ❤

Good topic. It will be a looooong strech of road though for us black women to finally get it. I have been natural all my life. Sometimes i do wigs, braids but often i wear my natural hair in a style that looks like micro locks/sister locks. I flippin' love it and i attract a different type of men. Not the stingy ones as many assume. I am a very expensive woman. Life in itself is expensive so there is no way around it. I always attract providers(though this is not the topic). I say this because there is a notion that you are cheap when you wear the hair god has given you and therefor will attract broke or stingy 50 50 men. I think that it would be nice if you made a video on that and the types of men you attract personally and how they treat you.

It took me awhile. I never wore weave or wigs. It’s just not me but I did have a relaxer for many years as a younger woman. It’s work too and I got to a point of wanting to stop paying the money for damaging my hair.
It’s definitely a journey but it’s worth it. It’s the hair God gave me 🙏🏽
My husband likes natural hair. He despises wigs and weaves.
It’s my perception that too many black women look TOO MADE UP! It looks unreal and basically it is because it’s unnatural.
I think it’s mainly bc we are held to a higher standard of beauty than our non-black counterparts, and the data shows that we spend more $$$ on beauty products collectively as a race. It’s okay for us to not be looking absolutely perfect all the time! And for a lot of us, looking perfect ≠ wearing our natural hair.

Loveeeed this video. I feel confident in my hair sometimes but not all the time, when I have shrinkage I do feel like I look like a child, so I want to always keep it stretched but the humidity never agrees with that. It is a struggle, but this year I've decided to at least stop hiding behind braids, twists, and faux locs. I want to get out of feeling like my hair has to be long to be beautiful. I've always had medium length and long hair but when it shrinks I don't feel my hair looks as good. Unleanring this, this year! I never considered a wig because the maintenance looks like sooo much work to only look good for a couple days.

I am very confident in my natural hair; it is my norm as I only had a relaxer for four years during high school, and I am early 40s now.
I used to wear my hair flat ironed consistently for years, but for the past 6 or 7 years, unstraightened and completely natural in the way it grows from my scalp.
In regards to men, one of my personal pet peeves is that men come up tome all the time and compliment me on my hair. Men are always saying how much they like my hair and how good it looks. Why is this a pet peeve? Because before, when I used to wear my hair flat ironed, men used to approach me and tell me I was beautiful and that I am so pretty, now it is just my hair. It has gone from me, as a whole woman, being deemed as beautiful, to now one single part of me being compartmentalized and noticed. For me, it is similar to a woman consistently being complimented on her fat @$$ in the sense of compartmentalization. I have sometimes questioned myself in thinking that perhaps I’m overthinking this, but women, also, of all ethnic backgrounds compliment my hair. And my hair IS gorgeous,beautiful, unique, and eye catching…but I would like to not feel like I am reduced to just disembodied hair walking around on legs. I am a collection of really beautiful features and characteristics.

I came across this video when you first posted it and I think it sparked something in me. Im technically natural but would always wear silk presses or braids. Fast forward to now, I recently just said F it! Did a mini chop and been wearing natural styles (twist outs and wash and gos). I felt the need to push myself to feel confident in my natural hair. And Ive been getting a lot of compliments and I just feel good!

I am currently on my journey of wearing my hair out now as I am tired of buying wigs. I had to literally unlearn all the backhanded compliments, etc when it comes to my hair. Just to name a few (this is your hair? or i thought your hair was fake or you really want to cut off all this good hair?). I have shaved my hair 4 times and last year was the last time. I just washed my hair to prep for dinner tomorrow and I never seen my hair grow this much now that I am cherishing my plant(hair). I never noticed how attractive I was until I looked at myself and then I would get random compliments from strangers more. It's such a beautiful journey and way of life to just be and love every aspect of you.
Wigs are def an investment over time but the hair underneath is always gonna be there. Good for you for loving your hair and learning it on this journey.

I have natural curly hair I always used to wear my hair unapologetically in high school with my fro and as I grew older I got into the weaves but I had that exact same thought I don’t want to look like everyone else natural is better less is more , and my fro is a fashion statement for me , 🖤
You ever feel like your fro goes with certain outfits?
I get keratin treatments and straighten my hair, partly because I was sick of the nasty or backhanded comments from people at school, whether they disliked me and were trying to laugh at me, or coming from my so called friends. But also because I didn't like my hair myself. I'm mixed race but it's around a 4a, and it's very hard to keep detangled, soft, moisturised and frizz free. I went natural for around 2 years and consumed lots of UA-cam content about caring for my hair type but I was miserable, especially with having to wet it every morning to detangle and get rid of frizz. Now I only straighten it every 1-2 weeks on wash day, and use a blow out brush to do my fringe in a morning and occasionally brush through for 5 mins if inbetween washes it gets a lil frizzy. So it is a lot easier for me however the difference in how I am viewed, or treated when my hair is a certain way is like night and day. Will I keep it straight atm, yes! I have a 70s shag which I love and would never work with my natural hair (too short and big), however you have made some really interesting points. I used to wonder what all the fuss was about in embracing your natural hair as most of the white women I Know dye, straighten/curl/blow out daily, get treatments etc on their hair but I realise that its not out of conformity and a fear of ill treatment like it is for us mixed and black women. Thanks for this video, you've really made me think broader about this topic.

I LOVE YOU!!!!! lol 99% of the times i am wearing my natural hair in a low bun. and if i do wear fake hair, it is usually a very kinky straight texture, braids or very tight curls that mimic my real hair. I care less about being perfect all the time. I'm in my 30s with a toddler so i could care less what other people think about me. Nobody got time for that lol. great video!

I have been natural my entire life (34 years) and I have never worn my hair in an Afro because I thought I looked more put together in braids. I have been wearing my hair “out” for the last 1 month because I had a set of braids that severely damaged my hair. So I vowed to give my hair a rest and get it back healthy until at least the summer. Tomorrow, I plan to wear my hair in an Afro because I’m tired of hiding my hair under wigs and clip ins ( which is also starting to damage my hair). Thank you for your inspiration!
