Shocking Breakdown Triumph Bonneville T120 First Service 😲 and Warranty work Completed

  • Today we took our Bonneville T120 for the warranty work to replace the left handle bar switch gear as the cruise control had a fault. 1.5 hours later and the new switch gear looks to have worked so looks all ok so far. We take a look at some of the new Chrome edition Triumphs and run through the receipt showing what was billed to us on the first service. Was it worth going to have the first service done by main dealer? Was it too much to pay the £250 ?

Thanks Peter, only ever bought 2 new bikes later in life, most have been second hand. And own serviced all of them. I’m going to question the diagnostic as I have a mate who has just had a Honda 1st service and no diagnostic on his first service.

My first new bike was a garreli moped from wall and sagar in lancaster many years ago😊. Currently I've a versys1000 from padgetts and I didnt take it back for its first service, though I do know Clive and Alan padgett, like you say use genuine parts and they have to honour the warranty. Surely the reason they plugged in the diagnostic computer was to fix a warranty problem. You seem to have a good relation with triumph so I'd mention it to them next time they sort a bike out for you to test.

Sorry to hear that you had to pay for the diagnostic check I'm surprised they didn't charge you for the spanners to change the oil. I've been with my Honda agent for 30 years now, and good service makes a big difference to the customer.

Good to know there are some dealers that want to look after their clients and not just after money. I know if I had taken back to the dealer I bought from labour would have been free but think as I took to a different dealer due to the original one being 350 miles away that it would be transferable from triumph dealer to triumph dealer.

Ive had so many problems with my T120 I baught used from northwest honda in Blackpool it's really knocked my confidence with it.
but the trouble is the 3 month has warranty has ran out and even though out of those 3 months I've only had it about a month in total.
The service I got from them has been quite bad and to boot they delivered it back to me with a dint in the tank and I had to send it back because of dodgy indicators which they have fixed both them issues which are just two of the issues I've had.
I really do hope I have no more trouble as just watching you ride yours reminds me of how good the bike is when it's working.

I did take my bike back to the dealer I purchased from in Bristol, the running in service 600 miles, they charged me £48:00, But they did try charging 2 hours labour for fitting of a set of forward controls to my speedmaster ( which I had ordered when purchasing the bike brand new but were on back order) . A quick walk upstairs to the salesman and that was scrubbed out. My first year service is due now and been quoted £230:00 . Dealer stamp & I’ll be doing my own when warranty is over. Great channel.

    Hi Nick
Bit of a calculated risk ding your own serving. Although the legislation changed for cars in that so long as a vehicle is maintained to the manufacturer’s specifications using comparable quality parts, then the warranty is valid, that legislation unfortunately didn’t extend to bikes. So it is up to the manufacturer if they accept that your serving and receipts if you have a warranty claim. Some do, some don’t.
    Regards
    Den

I bought a Tiger 900 last April. Lovely bike. Started it up one day in June and was shown a CHECK ENGINE DO NOT RIDE. Called in my friends and took the camper shell off, loaded the bike for the 2 and 1/2 hour drive (on a work day) down to the dealer. They told me it was nothing and handed me a$250 bill. I was shocked and expressed my dismay and they knocked off $100. I’m in Idaho and the next closest dealer is Salt Lake. That’s 5 1/2 hours. Thank goodness at 3200 miles nothing else has gone wrong. I sold my Yamaha Tenere 700 after a year of ownership, which I had bought during lockdown, so I couldn't get a demo. It was a nice bike, but I found it too top-heavy, and it spoiled the ride for me. I looked around and ended up getting an excellent deal on a Suzuki SV650 from a local dealer, they even threw in the first service for £50. My Yamaha dealer was a 60-mile round trip to Wigan! The SV650 sounds epic with a slip-on, it's very reliable, I've not had one single problem with it, and it's best described as a boulevard dragster - I absolutely love the thing!

@@MOTOUK1 I was looking at buying an Aprilia Tuono V4 Factory, my favourite bike, but then I came to my senses! The reality is, I can't even use all the power the SV650 has on the road, a Tuono V4 Factory would be at tickover most of the time, and then there's the running costs. The SV650 is perfect for my needs, and such a joy to ride. I'm busy upgrading it at the moment, the seat is the next job, and I'm thinking about changing the suspension. I still lust after an Aprilia Tuono, but wouldn't say no to a Triumph Speed Twin 1200, the new Street Triple 765 RS, or maybe even an Aprilia RS660 - but, it'll be a nice, low mileage, second hand bike! 👍

I own a 2018 Bonneville T100, which I bought last year. So I don't know the cost for the first service, but labour cost at the Triumph dealer here in the Netherlands in 2022 was 64 GBP/hour incl. 21% BTW (=VAT), using 1.13 Euro to 1 GBP as exchange rate. For my Moto Guzzi V85 TT I paid GPB 165 for the first service in 2021, with labour cost of 60 GBP/hour, both incl. BTW (no cost for error code searching). Goodness me!
That's ridiculous. As others have said, a bike under warranty should have any fault investigated at no charge to you. Surely they would claim back the "job" as a whole from Triumph UK including labour.
I believe they "plug in" as part of a service anyway in order to ensure the latest version of software is uploaded (which may include the latest engine map and safety items such as ABS configuration etc). The labour rate sounds about right but my local dealer Pidcocks actually provided the labour for a first service free and only charge for parts. The first service on my T100 was therefore under £70. My second service last year was less than £200 too.

Good morning, Sir. Can I ask you a question. Sometimes I struggle to view my T120 speedo dial. White on white basically in direct sunlight makes it difficult for me to read at times. Eg if it was a red needle on say blue numbers it would be more legible. Or is there a perspective surround I can install around the 2 dials as in speedo and tachometer.
My new RAV4 is similar, white on white, so I’ll purchase a HUD for that. But for the bike I’m unsure what to do.
I’m glad you’ve sorted your beautiful bike out. I’ll be doing oil and filter changes every 5k on my bike. I also plan to keep my Matt Black Gold Line T120.

Hang on! £90 an hour labour? isn't that about £30 too high. All in all I suppose its why you don't see as many Triumphs on the road as you do say Yamahas and Hondas. The ongoing costs is what put me off the Tiger 900... I went for the, maybe more prosaic, cheaper, less refined but fun Tracer 900. Easy servicing it apart from valve clearance obviously but that's not due until 22-24,000 miles. I would have a dedicated Triumph room full of various models if I had the money mind. All I had to pay for was the oil, filter and "misc lubricants". They took care of the labour and diagnostic check. was expecting it to be around £150 so I was pleasantly surprised. Comparable prices here around $450 basically to change the oil & filter & maybe adjust the chain at the 1000Km (600mile) service which is more than most cars. Probably 45 mins to an hour spent on the bike. I know they have overheads & mechanics to pay but how much profit do you really need. Thanks Steve 🙏 so yes this is a lifetime warranty from that dealer only, its a third party warranty not genuine triumph one and as far as i could see on their website covers most engine main parts. However the catch is you have to have the bike annually serviced by that dealer or the warranty is void. In my experience not worth the paper its written on, only my opinion.

I really hope that's the end of the niggles on your bike, you would would think that your first service agreement would have been transferable to another Triumph dealer., the diagnostic scan is usually done if the customer reports an undiagnosed fault, then you pay for the fault to be fixed if they find one, they have probably done it because you have had a problem with the switch gear control just to make sure nothing else is faulty, but you shouldn't have to pay for them to check., just checked my bill for 1st service and no auto scan done.
