    Neal could sing nursery rhymes in style of Hungarian folk music and it would still be more interesting than most of what passes for music. I'm hearing Zeppelin, then Beatles, Deep Purple, Tull, Argent, early Queen. Who else could pull all that off in one song! Is it prog - who cares, I was grinning from ear to ear the whole way through 😁

      Yes, Mike Portnoy is a legend. I´ve seen him a few times live, he is an incredible performer and showman!
      How many drummers have a discography like he does (Dream Theater, Neal Morse, Transatlantic, Liquid Tension Experiment ...)?

    I’m the man in the iron cage of fear
    I’ve been locked in this place for 1000 years
    I used to believe like you
    I used to be someone who
    Showed to others the way, but now I’m lost
    No one ever made me who I am
    Burned my bridges, sold my house, my car, my friends
    I used to believe like you
    I used to be someone who
    Showed to others the way, but now I’m lost
    I took every guardrail down
    I never thought I’d be found out
    But my secret sin surely had a cost
    Surely you can find your way back home
    Surely you can turn to God alone
    You are never too far gone
    His mercy’s new each day
    You can still sing freedom’s song
    You’re not so far gone
    You’re never too far gone
    To ever turn again
    I’m the man in the iron cage of death
    Started with a little slip, now it’s such a mess
    I used to believe like you
    I used to have dreams like you do
    But now I’m a prisoner of my rage
    When you think you’re sure to stand
    When you’re runnin’ the race I ran
    Remember the man in the iron cage

    I'm now addicted, I've discovered a really talented bunch of musicians, though I knew how good Portnoy was with DT ! I'm especially surprised by Eric Gilette, awesome vocals and guitars here !

    Portnoy seems like he is really happy playing with Neal Morse and that stellar band. This band has made some of these most incredible music and they seem to keep getting better...not sure how that is possible, but album after album, it's more and more refined, polished, inspired and tight. Pound for pound, this might be the best band on the planet right now...and only a select few even KNOW about them. Astonishing.

    Since nobody is saying "bad things" about this release... I will be the FIRST to say that I miss the EXTRA album with the covers of prog anthems. :D

    • @Moshugaani
      @Moshugaani 8 років тому +1

      Second that. ;D
      But I'll say another "bad thing": While I love what I'm hearing on The Similitude, _the hype still made me feel a bit disappointed_ when I first listened to the album.
      *One reason* for the disappointment is the recurring themes that they keep using in a lot of the songs. I felt like I heard them already a lot of times, since many of them were present in the pre-released music videos (and I listened to those a lot). So I was let down that there wasn't more of new melodies etc.
      *Another reason* for the disappointment is that too many good sections are too short! :D For example The Battle is so awesome I feel like it should've gone on for longer.
      Other than that, I think it's a fantastic album! It's impossible to put it above some other top favorite albums from Morse's career (or even Mike's), but it definitely is a jewel.

    • @ElArlequin
      @ElArlequin 8 років тому +1

      Moshugaani Moshugaani thank you for sharing your take on the album. After listening for the third time, I think I have to agree. Don't get me wrong, I love this album and is an instant classic for me... but hearing Neal talking about gates, sky and redemption is getting A LIL heavy. Is like we are always telling the same story. That is why I was very attracted to Big Big Train. Their songs talk about a lot of different stuff and they sure feel fresh and different. But hey! This is the NMB and this album is EPIC!

    • @Moshugaani
      @Moshugaani 7 років тому +1

      Martín Enemigo Ah, I understand what you mean, but by recurring themes I meant musical themes. You know, basically the same choruses/harmonies/lyrics/melodies used in different spots throughout the album. That is not uncommon for concept albums though!
      It's not a bad thing in itself, but wasn't what I was expecting. :D

    • @ElArlequin
      @ElArlequin 7 років тому

      Oh! That does not bother me that much, since it's part of the idea of having a conceptual album. I am a little bit tired about the LYRICS material per-se but the VOCAL work and the music is SO damn good I ended up not minding in the end. :P

    Solid song, but the verse and riff sound like something you've already heard over and over. And sorry Mike, it might be the best album you've ever done for you, but to me it's not even in the Top 3 for this year and also not in the Top 3 of albums you've made. It's good, but not as good as you praised it to be.

      FongoOngo What are your top 3 albums this year?

    • @FongoOngo
      @FongoOngo 8 років тому

      Thanks for asking. I noticed it's really hard to narrow it down to just 3 because of that. I'll just name some in no particular order that I liked more: Dream the Electric Sleep - Beneath the Dark Wide Sky, Evergrey - The Storm Within, Kyros - Vox Humana, Airbag - Disconnected, Anderson/Stolt - Invention of Knowledge.
      Well, opinions are opinions. Maybe the album will replace some of those I've named after I've given it a few more spins. The Ways of a Fool is easily one of best songs I've heard in a while, and the ending of the album is amazing, too. But there are too many 'meh'-songs throughout to truly call it a masterpiece.

    What I have heard so far from the album is OK I guess, but where did Neil's prog go ?? This is to me 13 in a dozen songs which is available from so many other bands. Overture is great but the other songs on youtube so far are not too exiting. I hear the last song of the album is real prog, so hope for that. Mike's comments this being his personal masterpiece, hmmm

      Joao Pedro Vieira check out the Alive Again live video. Halfway through the song they change instruments between them. Eric goes to the keyboard and then the drums. Mike goes to the bass. Neal to the drums. Randy to the guitar and Bill to the bass too, I think. They're multi instrumentalists, so they can play not just what they signed up for. They're awesome!

    Tell us, Neal, you have a big love for 12 strings 'eh :)

      There wasn't any significance. He said he just happened to be playing a 12-string when he wrote the songs for this album.

      Well he happens to play 12 strings on many other tunes too. Just seems to be a theme. I actually dig the jangle of a nicely tuned 12 string but hate trying to keep 'em in tune.
