I think a prog rock treatment of PIlgrim's Progress is long, long overdue. If Neal Morse wasn't doing it then I'd have to do it myself. It is the perfect theme for Neal's songs, and of course MIke's drumming makes everything better.
Neal Morse and Mike Portnoy's collaboration is the Lennon & McCartney of my generation.

First time really listening to this side of Neal Morse (I like transatlantic and i've heard some songs of Spock's Beard), this is so freaking epic!
I can't imagine what I've missed. What would be your recommendations for me to listen?
If you really dig this then I recommend Neal Morse - Sola Scriptura. I think it is his best album: it's a concept album about Martin Luther and is mostly devoid of some of the cheesy preachiness that can come across from some of his other albums. If you like that then check out Testimony and One.
mathrocker Woah, Thanks! I've read about Sola Scriptura but never listened to it closely and (of course) Testimony is one of those albums everyone recommends me. Would you say Spock's Beard's "Snow" follows that same line?
Testimony follows Snow pretty closely in song structure.

Tough it all goes further where Neal stopped with SB, it's still quite awesome stuff. My favs are One, ? and Sola Scriptura, though there's nothing really bad (you could say: he did this and that trick already, but hey, he does it awefully good anyway). Lifeline is my least favorite, but even that one is a good prog album. Neal just comes out best on concept albums ;-).
This overture really gets me warm. Can't wait to get my preorderd copy (or to see live next year)

I just scored 2nd row tickets to Neal's Saint Louis show in January. The surprising thing to me is that it's being held in a venue that seats, MAYBE 500 folks.

her'es my 2 cents.. 1st off how does he create from scratch a full album every single year since 1994..( i call him a music machine ) flowing flows out of him like water.. i grew up on zep and some prog..but spocks and neal..just changed my whole outlet on what is actually possible...

Neal Morse paint-by-numbers, which is all right by me. Has a strong Sola Scriptura vibe.
First I did not really get too excited of this album, but after a few and many listens, it managed to climb up as one of my favourite albums all-time! Cool edit!

This obscure chromatic part which starts at 3:00 reminds me a Lot of the dark melodies DT used in "in the presence of enemies"

After I posted the comment I realized too. It's some kind of arpeggio written over the main line/chord progression. In case you know, could you tell me what they are doing there?
i dont gave an instrument at hand at the moment but it sounds like a harmonic minor scale and they are playing in unison over an odd time signature
Wouldn't harmonic minor sound a bit more "arabic". Anyways, I LOOOVE those notes hehe
I just messed around on my guitar a bit for you and this appears to be a Hungarian minor scale, also known as the Egyptian scale. It's like the harmonic minor but with a raised 4th. So in this case they're playing in E♭m, but replacing the A♭ with an A. Essentially they're juggling an E♭m chord and a G♭m/A chord, which sounds great. If you play guitar and want an easy way to replicate this effect, try playing an F♯m chord (244222) followed by an Am/C chord (x32210). This will sound a little higher than the interlude in this song but it's the same effect tonally.

Haha no problem. Actually there was a concert in the Neal era where Spock's Beard played their famous song June in Chicago. At some point a long haired guy wearing an Ace Frehley mask comes up the stage and takes place behind the drum kit. Nick, the drummer, was not drumming but singing along with the harmonies. At the end of the song it is revealed this long haired guy is Mike Portnoy. The crowd goes wild once they find out. The video of this performance can be found on the bonus disc of the 'Don't try this at home DVD'. I can remember it was on UA-cam years ago but it has probably been removed.
On a side note, you should definitely try out Spock's Beard sometime. Those guys make some awesome music!

Spock's is great. Start with The Light or the Kindness of Strangers. For the post-Neal SB, they had a 'Meh' period for a while after Neal left until "X" in 2010 which is the album where they really started getting good and have been doing great since then.
Dream Theater has always been sort of half-metal, half-prog. Spock's is all prog, all the way. That's why I've always liked SB more than DT personally. Different styles / genres I guess.
It sounds good, great work, but nothing surprising or amazing. I'll be looking forward to the album.
If you know concept albums, you'll know that any track isn't as good alone as it would be in unison with the rest of the album.
These positive but still somehow disappointed reactions were inevitable after Portnoy's massive hype! :D
I think this is top notch stuff, albeit it's got a ton of "morseisms" in structure, melody, sound. Very much looking forward to the album, regardless of any hype!
I didn't buy into Mike's praises to begin with. Those were some fighting words on his part, but while it's nothing new, this still sounds very good.

I think Mike is referring to the epicness of the grand scale of this whole concept album, not just to one track.

They all are phenomenal musicians- saw them in Denver last year, up close, unbelievable what they did with "Alive Again"... rotating instruments in about 45 minutes of non stop mastery. Yes, I'm a fan.

This is awesome! Mike sent out a post the night before this was released to the public reminding us that this is only a small fraction of the album, not to judge the whole album by this alone. Yet some people have already passed judgement. I just want to say 'give the whole album a listen - then decide!'

I LOVE the part from 5:10, and especially the theme from 6:26. Can't wait for this album!! You guys say it sounds the same, but I think it seems more fresh with Bill and Eric. Love their style of playing.
And that theme is soooooo reminiscent of Genesis' Stagnation!
I pre-ordered this double CD before I watched this music video. Now that I have watched it I am so glad I pre-ordered it and can't wait till it comes in the mail! Strong emotion and artistic beauty to this piece. I love these longer instrumental sections and I have a feeling this new CD set will have lots of it to enjoy. Like everything from Neal and the team I look forward to the edification I know it will bring to those who listen.
