How to Replace Fork Seals | Yamaha FZ6 "Fazer"

- Today I show you guys exactly how to replace the fork seals on your Yamaha FZ6. I am doing the fork seal replacement on my 2007 Yamaha FZ6 S2, so if you have a similar model, it will be the same as mine. Make sure to have the right tools before you start so your bike won't be sitting without the front end for too long!

FZ6 07. I just did this repair and learned three things. 1) The split spacer that drops in before the seal must be forced into place to permit the seal to be properly installed with the retainer. 2) The best way to force the spacer and the seal home is a 14" piece of 3" ABS pipe cut lengthwise and held squeezed around the pipe. It is the perfect thickness to avoid damaging the seal and by putting a piece of wood across the top of the rig you can gently tap everything down evenly. 3) loosen the top cap and bottom hex bolt while still on the bike. That way you aren't trying to clamp or damage the pipe fighting to loosen them in the shop. A pretty easy repair once you have a plan.

Thanks for sharing this video, it was very helpful this week during the time when I fixed my FZ6's leaky forks.
A local used bike shop wanted to charge me $150.00 labor plus parts (with both forks removed from the bike) while the local Indian Motorcycle dealer wanted $200.00 for the same and another bike repair shop 150 miles away wanted $300.00 for the same. It was quite an experience that I greatly enjoyed doing while saving some $$$.
I hope you keep posting videos such as these on how to repair your FZ6 for us DIY guys.

Good day. Thank you for this video. I appreciate it so much. I also have a Yamaha FZ6 and mine is leaking oil at the left. the fork suspension also very soft and Ii recon I need to service them. I need the proper tools and fork oil. I did google it and they say it can be debris on the seals that causes the oil the sneak pass resulting in an oil leak. Cleaning it might work, might not. I did not see you mention about new seals that you purchased, just cleaning them. Of course I have to be prepared to have all the necessary tools before starting to work.
For the axel tool you can take a spark plug socket and put an extension in the spark plug end and use that. That's how I do it.

Took my front wheel off recently to get new tires and oh boy that shit was tight as hell I had to use the ole foot method. Also the tires looked like the ones that came from the factory on a bike from 2006 with 30k miles which I thought was odd. I think I also discovered the bike wasnt originally a naked but has a kit on it. Dont really have anyone else to tell this to lmao. Dont mind me commenting on a 5 year old video. The front instrument cluster and windscreen has started vibrating pretty bad (not stock), hopefully fixing that tomorrow.
When its time to do fork seals I will be back to watch this thoroughly. thanks bruh

Quick question: when you're cleaning your fork at 11:35, what are you using?

Also, I was reading another tutorial online and it mentioned greasing/lubing some bolts before you tighten them. Would you recommend any brand of grease? I was planning on using Red n' Tacky Grease.
Again, wonderful and informative videos, you're a very relatable person and that makes it easy to go "Hey, if he can do it, so can I!"
I was using brake cleaner! Getting all the old fork oil and sludge out.
And I haven't heard about doing that. I wouldn't want my bolts greased - the bearings yes - the bolts no. The bolts you might even add locktite/threadlock, you don't want them loosening. The bearings definitely want new grease, though.

Everything is ok, but the bottom bolt rotates with the item inside the fork. How can i block it to remove the bolt?
Hey mate, you' re doing lovely job with those fz6 tutorials we find it very useful keep fighting bro. How do you clean your exhaust pipes in the front of the motorcycle yours seems2be quite clean eventhough i had polished them after a short trip they're covered with brown colour because of gas emission. I have almost 80 000 km on the odometer no idea how much it is in miles i guess you got to double the distance by 1.7. cheers from Poland. P.s. are you living in california if so you've got loveley weather all yr round.
Lukasz Wagimin thanks! I just use normal cleaners for the exhaust pipes and it works fine. But with that many kilometers on your bike, the discoloration may be harder to get off.

But be carefull because this chemical must not touch anything except the pipes. My fz6 is 95.000 km and I am happy with him. Cheers from Turkey.
Helpful video this. I'm doing this job on my own FZ6 currently.
Tip for next time. You don't need a vice. Use the axle as a lever to counter the wrench when you do the bottom bolt.

How many miles can you get out of those seals....what causes them to leak, just lots of abuse?
Yeah, hard hits to the suspension, or even just going reeeally fast on normal roads consistently. Like over 100mph. Normal life is right around 20k miles, but if you're gentle with your bike you can see much longer life.
I changed the seal but its still leaking what's the reason
The chrome section of your folk may be damaged causing it to cut the seal when compressed. It only takes a slight nic or scratch to cause this. If you find someone and it's not to bad you can used fine wet and dry sand paper to smooth it out. But the seal will need to be replaced again.
Those "bearings" are not bearings! They are bushings. They do not turn. No need to grease them. They only ride on the inside races of the bearings, in the wheel hub, and space out the distance between the fork lower and the wheel.
If you don't want to buy the tool to remove the axle, you can also get a hex-headed bolt and feed that into the socket. Thread on two nuts and wrench those.
Just hope you have some big ole bolts laying around!
Yea I used two 3/4" nuts and a bolt for a tool. Worked really well. No one around here carries a 19mm allen socket

Did you figure out why the top part was spinning? My damper Assy is spinning when I'm trying to remove the bottom hex.
They are connected so if one spins the other one does, too. Got to hold one part and then loosen the other.

@@RandomChaos851 im trying to remember.... Im pretty sure I used a piece of 3/4" inch pvc to grab onto the top of the damper assy. @@RandomChaos851 I used the stick (back) part of a Home Depot rake on my 2012 Fz6R. I sharpened the back end of it with a boxcutter to give it a triangular profile. I put the forks inverted on the peeled stick-pointed side up, thrust downward force and loosened the bottom bolt. The process took 5-7 mins and 3 tries and the bolt came free !!! Good luck (Note: the damper has a round profile so you cannot jab a hex profile tool into it and expect a good grip-peeled end of a hard wood stick is the way to go)
3/4 bolt with 2 nuts tightened onto each other will also work for a good axle tool. If any one cares.

Your video is the only one I can find that doesn't suggest exercising the fork tube after adding oil. My SERVICE MANUAL for my 09 FZ6R and professional suspension tuners such as Dave Moss even teach to pump the forks up and down on all types of forks to evenly distribute the oil and expell air bubbles after adding fork oil when doing service. Just trying to help.
