- Now updated to v1.1 with drawable LFO for any CC
My Behringer JT-4000 arrived today, My first play of this great little Roland JP8000 clone with no talking so you can hear the sounds in all their glory. Towards the end I tweak the midi CC of the hardware with a custom Reaktor Ensemble. Based on Sunborn's JP8000 ensemble. Does it sound good? Let me know!
The Reaktor template is now available on the Reaktor user library. Have Fun!

Hopefully the fact that a $49 synth has a better screen than a $400 Roland boutique will shame people into putting better displays on things.
Seems here a lot of Roland bashing haha - I gues Roland didnt plan to make a tr8, 303 etc. synth with the original layout and put a screen on that
+1 there 👍. Volume purchase of OLED'S are dirt cheap now so, yeah, no excuses tbh....
What would a 80s replica synthesizer with a fader or knob per function need a better display for?
This thing is 50 bucks!? Just acquired a FM2.
Dear god the "screen" on the s-1 is so pathetic, there were better displays on toys from the mid 90's. Otherwsise an exellent mini-synth.
I don't regret buying this yesterday. Big sound coming from such a small synth.
Yes it’s the price of dinner for 2. Where as dinner for 2 turns into shit, this one will output good sounds for years to come.
I’m here in the US and I just ordered mine from overseas at a marked up cost. This thing punches way above its weight class. I went from “I might get one” to “I need to be the first person to have one.” 😅.
I thought it was just for bass 😂 no this thing produce lots of stuff
Physical synth the price of a VST not a bad deal
The price of a cheap VST most are a couple hundred.
It sounds defintly better than new Roland Gaia2 😁
Sure does! I wanted to like the new Gaia and the specs, especially the FX are nice…sounds like a cold sterile digital disaster sadly.
Yep i played one and all I can say is for $900. You would be out of your mind not to go with the hydrasynth explorer for $600.
Probably I´ll buy one of these in the future and proof you that this little one doesnt hold up to the gaia - since you can basically make them sound the same but the gaia has much more to shape the sound
@@novalogue I can do a sound of any cheap(or even free) vst synthesizer amazing same as Gaia2. I did it when I didn't have hardware synths in the 2000s, and this music was supported by really big guys in the music world. But why do we need to get a hardware synth with a raw sound like cheap vst synth? If you want - it's your choice. I wish you the best with it.
I dont get your point - you stated that it sounds better than the gaia? There was no question about what VSTs can do or not

Now if we can all just get smaller fingers…
Received mine yesterday. Cant wait to start playing it!
I don’t even understand how they did this for $50. It sounds incredible.
Probably the same way Costco sells their rotisserie chicken.
Rather simple digital synth engine. Extremely streamlined product design, omitted important features like Midi-in, cheap materials, mass manufacturing in China. This is how they did it.
And they still manage to reap a profit from it, go figure how cheap it's to them to manufacture.
You need a friendly chat with the production assembly operators - they will explain this clearly to you ...............
A 12bit MCU with builtin USB costs may be 2 or 3 euros. The 12db vcf IS not going to add much.
behringer are absolutely killing it omg!! LOL
Got mine today and have to say this is one amazing little synth for just over £40! Noise level is excellent, sounded amazing through my Yamaha HS monitors. The user interface is very intuitive and responsive, despite the tiny controls. You really forget this is paraphonic, compared to my Behringer Poly D this plays polyphonically much better. The twin oscillators give you thick sounds, also having PWM and Super Saw really beefs up the possibilities. There's a USB-C socket for powering the synth, plus it supports midi over USB. Nice thing is that if you use a controller keyboard from your computer connected to the JT-4000 you get velocity sensitivity, pitch bend, modulation wheel and full midi control over the filter, resonance, attack, decay and much more. Easy to dump and reload patches over Sysex or via the Behringer app. The only thing that took me a while to fathom out was how to get the arpeggiator working - eventually realised you have to go to settings and switch it from the keyboard to the arp. It doesn't have any digital effects on board so adding some external delay and reverb does enhance the sound a lot. The 12-bit DAC gives it a nice retro feel and the analog filter, whilst only 12dB per octave is a lovely touch. Great sounds and so much fun to play with!
Agreed, nothing this dinky should sound this good. :D
Although the midi is well specked, I found it doesn't respond to program change messages
No only via sysex, is most likely possible using an editor to change patches, but yes its a shame it doesn't respond to midi program change@@straighttalk2069
For 49 (dollars, pounds, euros) this sounds incredible.
Are you using external effects on the synth? It sounds amazing. The reactor template is awesome!
Thanks! Using Valhala shimmer reverb when stated in the video but most of the time its dry other than that.
This is one badass little synth! I play on giving it to my daughter, but I'm for sure going to travel with this guy.
Why not get two? One for her, one for you?
@@speakingcolors I like how you think
Yeah man! 👍 Trying to get my daughter into sound town as well.

I loved my old JP-8000 & JP-8080. You could have upper 2 osc, lower 2 osc or combo for 4 osc beastly sounds. There are Virtual recreations that are worth listening to out there as well.
Which virtual recreation did you prefer?
Thanks for making and sharing. I just backordered the synth and im very excited! Thanks also for the excellent Reaktor template! I had never thought of making synth editors in Reaktor so this vid opened up worlds of ideas for me.
Happy New Year everyone!
Strange that no one has made a direct comparison between this and a JP 80x0, is not like they are unobtanium like the Prophet VS...oh wait, there's a direct comparison of that and the new mini VS. Well, after having listened to this demo and seeing the synth architecture on screen, maybe it's not so strange.
Gonna put this one on top of my JP8000 as soon as it arrives and make it sing!
Thanks for the great demo!
Weird question (and BEST video I've seen on this synth so far) - did you see any octave control while you were fiddling with this or is it only fine tune tuning thru USB?
Yes there's an octave control in the osc menu.
Thanks a lot! Verty inspiring demo, really drawing me to play with it ... And thank you for the editor!
It needs one of those DFAM knob caps for the cutoff. Nobody should be forced to play with a microscopic cutoff knob.
You can control it via midi :)
I play with my small knob every morning
yeah but for that route you can also use a midi controller with a vst of your choice@@rcs2003
4:01 OOOOOOOF that’s fat!
It sounds pretty close to a JP8000- I owned one around 2005-2012.
A lot of VSTs do - there is a comparison video out there
@@novalogue Yes, I own a few VSTs that do. This is not a VST- its a totally self contained synth that could fit in a winter coat pocket. I just wish it had a 5 pin MIDI din input.
@@novalogue alot of vst sounds like vst. This sounds like an analog version of JP-8000, just with 4 voices.
The only thing that is analog is the Filter - there are much more components that makes a synth analog and simple filters like that are easily emulated you wouldnt hear the difference - besides that - just because a filter is analog it doesnt sound better - different flavours beside - some "flavours" are bad filter design choices (in my opinion)
A good example for that one is you get into the different kinds of Ms20 filter analog and digital that exist nowadays and you will understand that@@NatLifeSounds
Yeah its something very small and nice n cool for kids and beginners no doubt @@lundsweden
For the price, it sounds great. Thx for the video.
Ordered one on the back of this video! Thanks!
Thnx for demo sounds good! But to small for me, i dont like a clitoris control synthesizer.
Dude it sounds HUGE, and kinda reminded me of classic Roland synths! Wow that's a no brainer.
Great video, sounds epic! Have you been able to use midi to change programs? I also picked one of these up. I've got midi cc working but it doesn't seem to respond to program changes.
Unfortunately not, it doesn't seem to respond to program changes. You can send it sysex though to load a program so should be able to change presets that way.
@@jpphillippe2 I feared as much. Thanks for the reply. I'll have to get my head round sysex then 😖
Have you tried the onboard arpeggiator yet? Mine is not working and others are reporting the same and I've not seen one video yet where people have demonstrated it in use. I'm guessing the early units have a fault or they need a firmware update. I have updated the firmware to 1.1 using SynthTribe and checked the clock source is INT and not USB and get nothing from the arpeggiator. I've tried running power to it from a PC and charger - no difference.
Yes it works, settings/ page 2/ change A set key to set arp.
Omg the sound is Huge!
Is it virtual analog like the original Roland synth?
Virtual analog with analog filter as far as I know
Amazing value. Just amazing.
Got mine yesterday, I need that controller... fast work mate !!!
Strong BoC vibes around 14'30". Synth sounds good, nice demo.
Great demo, thanks
Does it have a built in speaker like POs or Volcas?

I know nothing about reaktor or synth, could you tell me how can you replicate jt-4000 in software?😮😮
This is a controller for the original hardware. But you could recreate the original in reaktor. There is a full jp8000 emulation on the reaktor user library. To explain here how to make it wouldn't be practical. But you can inspect the layout and inner workings of jp8000 emulation on the user library and see how it was created. That is the beauty of reaktor.
@@jpphillippe2 thank yo soooo much!!! Sytn MASTER !!! I've been playing guitar but know nothing about the synths, I'll try playing around with the reaktor and feel the beauty of synth!
Great demo. Does usb c power it and midi connect it at the same time?
yes

7:30 holy hack man, to this point weirdly alligned sound aestethically, ordered one 40 min ago
Hey mate, love this idea downloaded it straight away but I'm struggling to set it up in Ableton. I've got my JT 4000 set up with a midi channel, receiving a midi from the synth and that's being rooted to an audio channel. It is playing fine. I'm struggling to figure out where the reaktor unit is placed. Is it on the midi channel or is it on the audio channel? Also, is it a reaktor or reaktor Fx unit I should be using? I've tried all different configurations, and as soon as I add the reaktor unit, the audio stopped playing? Any help would be massively appreciated.
It doesn't use or make audio at all it's only midi. It doesn't create any sounds it just controls the JT hardware. So don't add it as an effect on the jt4000 audio channel. Assuming you have created midi and audio channels for the jt-4000, Create a new channel/track with reaktor (as an instrument). Then route the midi output of the reaktor midi channel to the jt-4000 midi channel input. You should be golden.
@@jpphillippe2 amazing thank you so much for getting back to me. Looks like that’s where I’ve been going wrong I’ll give it a try 💜💛🤍
Hi mate, really appreciate your support with this but I can't get this to work at all in Ableton. Got it setup correctly with a midi and audio channel for the JT4000, that working fine. I can add a new midi channel and route the midi to the JT4000 midi channel, but as soon as I had the reaktor device it changes to audio out, and I can't select the JT4000 midi channel. Do you have to root the midi from reaktor within reaktor itself?
@@quinlivanhunt So you should have 3 tracks. Add 1 midi track for jt-4000. 1 Audio Track for Jt-4000. Drag the reaktor plugin to a create a new track. On the jt-4000 midi track You need to set the "midi from" to reaktor and set change the "pre fx/post fx" to "Reaktor" also (the second selection box). "Midi to" should be set to the jt-4000 and channel 1. Arm the jt-4000 track (red button) You don't need to change anything midi settings in reaktor. Select the Reaktor track and open the editor. The controls in reaktor should change the parameters on the jt-4000 hardware. (double check the red arm is still on on the jt-4000 channel). Other things to check is in Preferences/midi/midiports. Put a tick the "track" and "remote" buttons on both the jt-4000 input and outputs.

Geil dat teil!✌️❤️
But what about the MIDI?? is it possible to have power and MIDI from a controller in the same cable?? weird thing....
The Synth is a MIDI USB Device and like all devices needs a Host, the majority of USB Devices gets power and data on the same cable, your mouse, usb stick etc If the controller has a MIDI Host plug, then yes it can power the JT-4000 and controls it.
SQAURE 💀
So whats the ideology on programming these little bastards ... From the front panel? CC over MIDI? is there an cross platform editor? .. It does sounds lovely ...(edit ...ok 9:30 editor is shown)... ipad android versions would be nice
Only reaktor version so far. You could knock up a touch osc template for android and ios pretty easily. all the CC are listed in the quick start guide.
Polyphony? Sequencer? I was looking at the J-3, for a mobile noodle-machine/sketchpad … 🤔🤔🤔
It has 4 note polyphony, no sequencer. It will also not work with a standalone sequencer without a usb midi host.
That pad sound at 16:41 🤤
Is it possible use jt 4000 without PC, but only connecting a midi usb keyboard?
You need a USB host to do it. Kenton, Raspberry pi etc. Not on its own though. It only has usb midi.
Question, what's up with the LFOs. From Midi CC you can't choose the destinations (what I read from the manual). and I am puzzled about LFO2 (no destination possible). So how does it work? From the JT itself and from your nice template?
Destination isn't assignable unfortunately. lfo 1 is hardwired to cuttoff and lfo 2 to pitch for vibrato. its limited, but I keep saying to myself its less than 50 quid. so cant complain. pretty sure it can be changed in a firmware update but remains to be seen. i could probably add a 3rd lfo from reakktor that is assignable to any off the ccs. might do that.
Love the Reaktor controller! When you play with the touch keyboard it looks like there's quite a bit of latency - did you notice that?
There is a tiny touch of latency. But its more than likely just the audio sync on the video. Playing the touch keyboard is just a bit of funreally, i would definitely recommend using a midi keyboard as you get velocity and modulation etc and its way easier to play :D Its the best stylaphone I've every heard though:D
Yes, I agree, it sounds great but this latency is a bit of a problem for me and may be the reason for me returning it
There was no latency with midi(usb) so not too bad. But yes if you need to use the touch keyboard then it might be a problem.
@@officialsimonharris what about an external controller?
haha, just found the styloes today, fell in love, searched for "keyboard hack" nothing ! then i found this and feld punked, as if someone created it, +20 bugs less than the gen x1 @@jpphillippe2
Got one to,dont use it anymore, not enough sounds in it
Hi what reverb / fx chain are you using in this demo?
valhalla shimmer for reverb and cubase to record. No other fx.
Q: so you can hook this thing up to an amp and it works?
Or does it need to go thru other things?
It requires power from usb but yes It will work straight into an amp. There are no FX and playing the ribbon controller is little tricky so would recommend hooking up to a computer/usb host and playing it with a midi keyboard.
Great Synth, But who do I connect the Reaktor JT-4000 to my HW JT-4000. Where do I set the midi ports?
If using reaktor in stand alone. Enable midi out in "file/audio and midi settings/midi/outputs". If your using reaktor in a DAW it is specific to each one. Vst midi is handled differently by each host.
@@jpphillippe2 Thanks. Unfortunately is Maschine, with Reactor as a plugin, unable to handle MIDI out. ou cannot use and Midi VSTs.
No behringer and no cry.
One of the most amazing synths for the price range I've ever seen. Just wish I had bought these instead of my Korg Monotrons. Definitely buying 2 of these 👌
The modulation options seem so limited. Not for me
Hence the reaktor controller to add the extra assignable mod routing. Cant really complain for a $49 toy.

Wondering if this will work with the USB-C charging port in my Circuit Tracks. It’s able to send midi to my MacBook Pro that way so fingers crossed.
I also saw a demo where Behringer used their own version of the Keystep and it was directly plugged into the Micro, or at least it appeared to be.
I would guess not. I can`t see anything on the Novation site to suggest it having an inbuilt usb host. it does send midi via use but I should think unless it specifically states it has a usb host built in then it wont work with the JT. It doesn`t for example work with my Novation SL. Someone else may know different though.
What reverb are you using in the demo?
Valhala Shimmer
What´s up with Thomann? (EU) On their site they say it'll come...in 2 months.
Seems Andertons UK have all the stock. Still available.
Thanks...but because of Brexit it would cost a fortune to order it from them, same with the Mini VS. I thought Thomann had some priority, I was waiting (preorder) for the Mini VS for months, still nothing at Thomann.
Thanks for the early demo!
I'm assuming that's why thomann don't have any though as Andertons got them all. Guessing they paid behringer more for them. Was much easier to get stuff to and from Europe before brexit thats for sure. Hope you manage to get one.@@Aetila
Sounds posh! Would be cool if these little bastards were stackable via USB to create an 8 voice version for under 100!

Does this Reaktor editor have all the functions of a synthesizer or are there some more hidden ones?
There are a few more controls in the settings menu that you can't control, envelope depth etc, but no that is all that's available via CC unfortunately.

What did you use to power this and also hook up a midi keyboard, given that there's only one USB port?
PC running cubase via usb, with rd700nx keyboard. you need some sort of midi interface to trigger it via usb. pc/mac or ipad would probably be the easiest option. Although it claims class compliance usb.

If I end up using my PC, I'd likely just use the multitude of soft synths that are on there.
How’s the noise level?
Seems pretty quiet. Way quieter than the deepmind. On full volume there is a very subtle hiss with heaphones but its really low.

Sometimes Windows and Synthtribe just don't cooperate. Start and exit the program a couple of times, reconnect and disconnect the device a couple of times, and it starts working. Check that your device is active under usb devices in Windows, too.
