California is straight up one of the best albums ever made in my opinion. You could do any other song off this album. Its all quality, man. Its so weird, but not just for weirdness sake. Its very well put together and produced.

@@timothymcnaughton531 for sure, and all the little flourishes and weirdo Patton stuff going on in the background just culminates into a one of a kind listen. I'd love it if Geebz did Goodbye Sober Day. What a way to end an album.
That album was entirely recorded on old school analog tape machines. There is no digital editing on it. They had the same limitations as Brian Wilson had in the day. It’s called California because it’s their take on the California Sound
They actually connected THREE 24 track mixing boards to pull it off. In 1999. The panning had to be decided at the time of recording too. Wrap your brain around that.
@@nicolaspigrais482 No, I think it was just slated to be released the same week and Warner pushed it back to avoid confusion with their more flagship band RHCP. Mr. Bungle California would be listed right before RHCP Calofornication. This only fueled the Patton/Keidis dispute, with Bungle getting kicked off shows and then dressing up like them for Halloween.
Goodbye Sober Day is my favorite song of theirs. My (now ex) wife and I were obsessed with California and happened to be in Vegas one weekend. One of the nights she decides to stay in the hotel while I went out with our friends. I come back and she's freaking out about how she saw this show and on it was this Balinese chant (the Kechak) and that was the "Chack, Chack, Chack" part of Goodbye Sober Day. After that weekend we were home and another friend invites us to go to Bali with him and his wife. Several months later we got to see the Kachak in person in Bali. There's just no one better than Mike. For someone with his vocal skill with his musical skill and taste, is just the greatest thing I've been fortunate to know and enjoy his compositions /songs over 3 decades. Here's to you Mike Patton.
How good it is to see you reacting to Mr Bungle!!! One of my favorite bands. If you like music in general, they have several layers and styles to dig in. Greetings from Argentina!
So happy to see another Mr. Bungle reaction! They were an inspiration to many of the bands you have covered on your channel. I believe this album was one of the most complex analog recordings ever done, and Brian Wilson was a huge influence on Trey's (guitarist, etc,) engineering guidance. To complete the Warner Bros trilogy, I recommend "Carry Stress in the Jaw" from Disco Volante. As for "Six Degrees of Separation" recommendations, just throw a dart at a list of any of Patton's other projects (Faith No More goes without saying): Fantomas, Tomahawk, Moonchild or any of his work with John Zorn, his EP with The Dillinger Escape Plan...But it would be REALLY cool to listen to you react to something by Trevor Dunn's Trio Convulsant!
Love this track, great album too. It was their attempt to make something radio friendly (apparently they weren't listening to what was on the radio in 1999). Check out spinoff bands Secret Chiefs 3 and Fantomas if you're so inclined. Especially the album 'Suspended Animation', there's really nothing like it. Also Zorn's Moonchild project, my fav is Six Litanies for Heliogabalus. Maybe Slayer, too. As for genre, they were adapting contemporary art music techniques to rock music which I see as straight up prog right down the middle.
+1 For Secret Chiefs 3. I recommend something off of Book M (ua-cam.com/video/fMFHJU0NOWo/v-deo.html ) or The End Times (ua-cam.com/video/QsvqLCS1NEk/v-deo.html )
I was so lucky to be introduced to Mr Bungle by my close friends who were learning to play both bass guitar, electric guitar and drums, and like me, already loved Faith No More and pretty much anything that Mike Patton was working on. They toured Australia in 96 and they played at one of the oldest venues in our port and fishing town of Fremantle (just south of Perth) and the entire audience were gobsmacked 😶 by how amazing their sound and theatrical on-stage antics were. Each band member swapping instruments with another band member just to wow the crowd. Mike Patton operating multiple layered keyboards and synthesizers, including an array of different microphones for all his voices. The drummer never stopped drumming for the entire set, even between songs. Incredible energy and still my favourite show in 30 years
Soooooo happy you're digging into the Bungle rabbit hole. Mike Patton is not only a genuine musical genius, but he also has the widest vocal range of any human. (At least that's what I read) Some gems - Squeeze me macaroni, Ars Moriandi, Goodbye sober day. No other bands fit this genre lol. But some other Mike Patton bands I think would interest you - Peeping Tom (cross genre) Tomahawk (Rock/metal) Fantomas Melvins Big Band (weird and great) and of course Faith No More Aloha:)
I love how you completely get Bungle! This whole record has some real Pet Sounds influence, much more chilled than the first 2 records but still catches you off guard. Good stuff fella!
Ars Moriendi, from the same album, may be my favourite Mr. Bungle song. And if you're diving into the weird "art rock" of the nineties I can highly recommend Idiot Flesh - Chicken Little.
Said it on your first reaction to Mr. Bungle, I'll say it again. There is a recording of them on the Bizarre festival. The quality isn't the most brilliant, but I still think that it is the perfect cross-section of this band, absolutely stunning vocal work by Patton and shout out to the percussionist. Here is the link: ua-cam.com/video/mJstGnsAQP4/v-deo.html
The vocalist for Bungle is Mike Patton, who is one of the great vocalists of the last few decades, and perhaps an all time great. He's most well known for the band Faith No More, but he's done about a million side projects that showcase his talents in different ways. My recommendations for a Mike Patton mini-marathon: Faith No More- A Small Victory Mr. Bungle - Goodbye Sober Day Fantomas- Rosemary's Baby
You're absolutely right, The beach Boys was a huge influence in the sound of this record according to the band itself (specially their 1966 record 'Pet Sounds'). I guess they took that influence a step further by using production tricks from that era as well. Great video, very entertaining and informative. If you find time, react or at least listen to their song 'Stubb (A Dub)'. Keep on rocking!
Mr. Bungle is so good especially this album. California has so many different musical styles, and Patton one of the few vocalists who could pull an album like this off.
I was lucky enough to see this masterpiece live! At a place called Fitzgerald's in Houston. I wasn't going to go because I had initially like the first two albums so much that I was a little bit mad at the California album. Quickly turned into my favorite after seeing them perform everything perfect. Only then did I really realize the vibe and the genius! Still get goosebumps thinking about it
Now that you've done one from the self titled and California, next up is Disco Volante! May I suggest Carry Stress In The Jaw? You're reaction videos and commentary are priceless and so fun to watch. It's like I get to experience the song for the first time again! Thanks man!
I love the insight on the mono strings playing at the beginning, that's something I never would have picked up on! Soo glad you chose this song! Personally I think this whole album will be up your alley Geebz, it's an eclectic mix as always, but I think it's their most accessible. (if you can use terms like that when talking about Mr.B lol) Plus it would be great to surf to as well! (: As for bands similar to Bungle. I'd love to see you do Idiot Flesh. A song like Chicken Little or Black Sand would be a good place to start. Thanks for the content Geebz you rock!
I first got turned onto them with the release of the album "California". And it's an album I come back to every year... as soon as spring comes and we get the nice sun and mild warmth it's a top down cruising album. It's an amazing album all the way through.
@Steven Bristol Yeah good eye, that is me and devy after his next to last show with DTP. He's such a nice and gentle man. Truly the best musician I've ever met. Trent Reznor was also super nice
For a mind-melting connection, check out a band Mike Patton has worked with a couple times and Mr. Bungle has toured with: MELT-BANANA. And there's only one song you really have to do, though plenty other crazy ones- "Chain-Shot to Have Some Fun"... it's also one of a few over 3 minutes- the alternative is listening to a collection of short tracks, most are less than a minute long.
Glad you continue your dive on the Bungle rabbit hole haha still a long way to go through. You should try " Violenza Domestica " or " Dead Goon " next. Those would be really cool for you to explore (this song are compositional awesomeness in my opinion). Also I will keep insisting on you listening to the next songs: " Wayfarer " by Kayo Dot " Dirty Boy " or " Hope Day " by Cardiacs (this guys and also Devo are like the fathers of Mr Bungle) " The Curve That to a Angle Turn'd " by maudlin of the Well (First incarnation of Kayo Dot) I know that at this point your suggestions are like through the ceiling haha but anyways I'll be hoping that you can get around this songs some day because I have the certainty that you will love them (or at least find them quiet interesting).
I see you've done a reaction video for Carousel from Mr Bungle's self titled album (AKA the Clown album), and now on this video Mr Bungle's California so I really do recommend listening to their second album Disco Volante and in particular the track called Desert Search for Techno Allah.
I suggest you to try Naked City Torture Garden, if it is possible, more crazy than MB. John Zorn - alto saxophone Bill Frisell - electric guitar Fred Frith - bass guitar Wayne Horvitz - keyboards Joey Baron - drums Yamatsuka Eye - vocals
Yes! Another must listen to track is Goodbye Sober Day....and Desert Search for Techno Allah ...and Mr. Nice Guy (a demo track that unfortunately didn't make it onto any of their studio albums).
One of my favorite albums of all time! I remember the day it came out and going to their show and meeting Mike Patton on the street in front of the theater and being shocked at how short he was! 😱
You still have so many good Mr Bungle gems to discover from all 3 of their albums! But other Mike Patton (the lead vocalist who was also the lead vocalist from Faith No More) projects to check out are Fantomas, Peeping Tom, Tomahawk, Handsome Boy Modeling School
Oh man, couldn't click the video fast enough; one of my favorites from this album. I was born way after the 60's but it's cool to hear how this song could bring you back to them.
So happy to see you do this! I think that Mr. Bungle's California is easily on the top 100 greatest rock albums all time, and definitely a sonic mind F#$@!
I saw Bungle with Dillinger Escape Plan. Bungle were so loud that I had to go outside twice to let my eyes uncross. It was great to see 2 brilliant bands back to back!
From the California album: 1. None of them knew they were robots 2. Arsmoriendi 3. Goodbye Sober Day Either one of those i would be happy to hear your reaction🙏🏻
My best mate once described Mr. Bungle-who I first heard while on LSD…Imagine THAT…as ‘A weird montage of circus music, lounge jazz, surf music, and death metal.’ Yet somehow it WORKS, and what’s more, it’s AWESOME. I was so happy I discovered them when I did, because it was literally 2 months before I was able to catch them live on the tour supporting their 1999 album, *California*. That was the last tour upon which they played their best-known songs. I definitely took two tabs of acid before that show. I danced my ass off. I was hysterical, and I had so much fun. I never grinned so widely for so long in my life. My mates said I thought I’d lost it permanently. They’re amazing.
Reterovertigo - another bungle masterpiece, I adore this song, the way the guitar chords like slowly turn scary idk how to describe it haha. The fan made music video for it on UA-cam is also super awesome

So many great bands and genres have Mike Patton on vocals, that’s how talented and diverse the guy is. I met him once on south street in Philadelphia after a Tomahawk show and he was the nicest guy. I know he wouldn’t remember but he seemed content to hang out and talk,I kept giving him a chance to wrap up the conversation and walk away so I wouldn’t take up anymore of his time but he just hung out and talked until I got out of there.
Tomahawk as well!
i still wanna see him do a "king crimson"
I'm glad you mentioned the Beach Boys. This album has always felt to me like a modern Pet Sounds in spirit.
Mr bungle is definitely on a genre of its own, for this kind of content I bet they're insanely fun to analyze and pick apart, thanks for the video!
The guitarist Trey Spruance also formed Secret Chiefs 3 who are AMAZING! Especially the album Book of Horizons.
Thank you sir, love everything Patton, love Bungle.
Never heard of this band but immediately recognized The Beach Boys sound. Loved it, brought a smile on my face “Beach Boys on mushrooms” 😂 Thanks
YES! So glad you did this album, one of my all time favorites!
The vocalist for Bungle is Mike Patton, who is one of the great vocalists of the last few decades, and perhaps an all time great. He's most well known for the band Faith No More, but he's done about a million side projects that showcase his talents in different ways. My recommendations for a Mike Patton mini-marathon:
Faith No More- A Small Victory
Mr. Bungle - Goodbye Sober Day
Fantomas- Rosemary's Baby
Backstrokin' is my favorite song from Disco Volante. For old Bungle demos Mr. Nice Guy is always a good option
my favorite song entirely!!! or egg maybe
subbed for the bungle, stayed for the awesome music taste ;)
Mr. Bungle have been quoted as saying that this was last major label "big" analog recording.
Haha yes, so glad you came back to Mr. Bungle.
Still get goosebumps thinking about it
Please do "Carry stress in the jaw" next
I was going to say platypus.
bajs
Yes, one of my favourite bungle songs
Such a good song... when I discovered it I listened to it every day for a couple weeks haha
+1 for "Carry Stress in the Jaw" (secret song included!)
Now that you've done one from the self titled and California, next up is Disco Volante! May I suggest Carry Stress In The Jaw? You're reaction videos and commentary are priceless and so fun to watch. It's like I get to experience the song for the first time again! Thanks man!
But if want to do another song from California, Are Moriendi is ultra perfection!
Love the Mr Bungle reacts. Do Carry Stress in the Jaw!
As for bands similar to Bungle. I'd love to see you do Idiot Flesh. A song like Chicken Little or Black Sand would be a good place to start.
Thanks for the content Geebz you rock!
Love Mr. Bungle! Would love to see you do one for Maudlin of the Well. I'd recommend the songs Ferocious Weights or Geography. Loving these videos.
Kinda seems like Mr. Bungle is the Schrödinger's cat of musical genres.
Mike Patton is just a treasure. All of his projects are super cool. My dad was obsessed with Tomahawk back in the day.
I'll never forget the first time I heard this album and I wish I could experience that surprise and joy once again.
Do the whole Mr. Bungle discography!!!
If Geebz is reading this sometime.... Soen; Vitrol or Opal. Time for something new?... Enjoy a ride :)
My ass is on fire by Mr Bungle. Really brings it back to that psychotic carnival sound from the first album
They have mentioned The Beach Boys as an inspiration for this album. Thank you for reacting to them!
Also I will keep insisting on you listening to the next songs:
" Wayfarer " by Kayo Dot
" Dirty Boy " or " Hope Day " by Cardiacs (this guys and also Devo are like the fathers of Mr Bungle)
" The Curve That to a Angle Turn'd " by maudlin of the Well (First incarnation of Kayo Dot)
I know that at this point your suggestions are like through the ceiling haha but anyways I'll be hoping that you can get around this songs some day because I have the certainty that you will love them (or at least find them quiet interesting).
I see you've done a reaction video for Carousel from Mr Bungle's self titled album (AKA the Clown album), and now on this video Mr Bungle's California so I really do recommend listening to their second album Disco Volante and in particular the track called Desert Search for Techno Allah.
Yes! Bungle! I’ll keep requesting Goodbye Sober Day til the sun burns out 🙏
Until the sun is blown out like a candle, until the sea burns like tar
@@iteritinerant9314 lol precisely
Mike Patton is so talented! React to Faith no more Land of Sunshine. One of my favorite songs ever!
Watching your reaction to Bungle fills me with joy. I look forward to seeing more.
I suggest you to try Naked City Torture Garden, if it is possible, more crazy than MB.
John Zorn - alto saxophone
Bill Frisell - electric guitar
Fred Frith - bass guitar
Wayne Horvitz - keyboards
Joey Baron - drums
Yamatsuka Eye - vocals
I can't tell you how happy I am that you are reacting to Mr. Bungle.
I love this album.
I was born way after the 60's but it's cool to hear how this song could bring you back to them.
related: FAITH NO MORE - "A Small Victory" or "Smaller and Smaller"
cheers!
Pure enjoyment and honesty, keep the vibe alive.
didn’t expect to see this today LOL
From the California album:
1. None of them knew they were robots
2. Arsmoriendi
3. Goodbye Sober Day
Either one of those i would be happy to hear your reaction🙏🏻
Oh gosh, if you wanna hear more Mr. Bungle I recommend Retrovertogo. ❤️
Reterovertigo - another bungle masterpiece, I adore this song, the way the guitar chords like slowly turn scary idk how to describe it haha. The fan made music video for it on UA-cam is also super awesome
sell the rights
to your blight
and you'll eat
Check out Mondo Cane. It's Mike Patton from Mr. Bungle singing in Italian
really cool analysis mate, interesting to hear you communicate what you are experiencing in real time. you bridge the gap between us and the music really well.
one of my favorite albums of all time omggggg
So many great bands and genres have Mike Patton on vocals, that’s how talented and diverse the guy is. I met him once on south street in Philadelphia after a Tomahawk show and he was the nicest guy. I know he wouldn’t remember but he seemed content to hang out and talk,I kept giving him a chance to wrap up the conversation and walk away so I wouldn’t take up anymore of his time but he just hung out and talked until I got out of there. We had just had a blizzard and he said he was surprised everyone showed up(no one else would be surprised🤘)
I’ve been waiting for this moment, Geebz!!!
I saw them perform this at sno core. Blew my mind the whole show!
If there was only one album where I wish they had video’d the making of it, it would be this one 🥰
