      Australian here, Crosstalk has been my goto for Ubiquiti for years too :) I'm here today because a workmate went out and purchased a UISP Router and Unifi U6+ APs. I'd not even heard of this UISP range so I'm researching. I'd have advised getting a Unifi router (USG Ultra seems ideal, assuming he doesnt also need a seperate cloud key?) but it is what it is.

    This video gave me anxiety. As someone who switched to Unifi Talk and then ported back out of it 2 weeks later, I've got to say that UB needs to slow down and focus more on each project. They have so many devices now that even watching Chris (who is always a wonderful explainer) break down the differences of the ULTRA line, it felt like "here's this one, oh and this one... now I knew you'd ask, so here's these three but don't confuse them with the two before the last two" lol. Great video Chris, and thanks for making it through this video without needing a drink - although now I do.

    What I need: A WIFI 6e/7 UDR with 2.5G WAN and a quad core processor (like the UDM used to have). It will also be nice to have a setting on the configuration app that auto applies the firewall and configuration settings that exist in Amplifi with the ability to configure manually from there on (but you can easily default back to if an amateur messes something up).

The plan is to run 4-6 cameras on the property and get Wifi on most areas with the Mesh. Unify express lasted only 2 days in our household. Wifi is really bad. With 50 total devices (20 WiFi), it got so hot that I put it on a side for some extra airflow. UI very slow to load. I wanted to return it, but with 15% restocking fee and shipping, I sold it locally.
      Great device for parents if you want to manage it remotely, maybe something for family travels, but you don't want this as router for many devices or WiFi.

      @@JonesBoulathe latest beta update for network has made a massive difference for the express. I swapped from a rock UDR to express linked to a switch lite with two access points to make use on of my 1GB. Until the update it was terrible and the console would crash all the time after about 18 hours. I do have 78 devices due to smart home tech. It seems lots better now but still slow. I have the gateway ultra arriving today. I only wish it had a wall mount like the switches but it’s perfect for my new setup and I’ll get a wall mount off Etsy soon. • @swissfreek
    @swissfreek 2 місяці тому +2

    I’m glad you came back from the future to talk about the UDR, because the whole video I was thinking to myself “Wait, the UCG-Ultra is basically a UDR without the access point?” It kind of sounds like unless you have gigabit internet service, the UDR still would be the easier option, since your AP is built in, and the downsides (lower throughput) shouldn’t be a bottleneck with “typical” 300-600Mbps cable internet that most people here in the US have. I have gigabit fiber and bought a UDM Pro because of the limitations of the UDM/UDR, but now I could get the UCG Ultra for significantly less and still meet all of my requirements.
    Side note, I just about spat my water out with your “mother-in-law” comment. That’s exactly where my UDR is 😂

    • @CaptainAndy99
      @CaptainAndy99 2 місяці тому

      The main difference I saw was that the UCG-Ultra has dual WAN capability which is what I want but does not have the access point (which I also want). I have the original Dream Machine (non-pro). Access point sorted but no dual WAN. Sigh.

    • @swissfreek
      @swissfreek 18 днів тому

      @@CaptainAndy99 how common is dual WAN though? I mean in a home or small business setup that this seems to be aimed at. Is it a cell modem backup for flaky wired internet? Or are people carrying cable internet and fiber at the same time? In the US I just can’t think of how that would work (other than I guess backing up flaky cable internet out in the farmlands maybe) without costing a fortune and leaving one of the two services barely ever used. Like if your cable is flaky and you use a cell backup, why not just drop cable? Are there home office/small business plans that still charge by data throughput to where that unused backup might be fairly cheap as a backup but prohibitively expensive as a primary?

    Currently i’m using a self hosted unifi controller on a VM (hosted in a qnap) and two ubiquiti AP6-Pro. I have a xgpon connection with 10gbit down/2gbit up speed, routing is managed through the router provided by the internet provider. The switch is a Zyxel with some 10gbit port.

    I am trying to sort out an upgrade to my Unifi equipment. I am getting Starlink Gen 3 and my current cloud key server died. I have 3 AC-PROs and I would like to power them with POE vs injectors. I have been looking at the UDM-SE and then saw the Cloud Gateway Ultra and Switch Ultra. Cost isn't the main issue, I am looking for the best overall option. I was looking at the UDM-SE as a way to power the three AC-PROs and replace the failed Cloud Key server. I would be open to any advice on going with the UDM-SE vs the Ultra devices. One of my concerns with the Switch Ultra is powering the AC-PROs. I have never used a POE switch in my home network so I am new to figuring out what will and will not work for the AC-PROs but I was assured the UDM-SE was more than capable.

    fun fact the Express is the perfect travel router. I bought one set it up as its own router applied firewall rules and integrated it with site to site magic. Now when ever i travel i can take it with me and plug it into any Ethernet port and create my own network to phone home. Obviously you need to tune it so VPN protects all the incoming /outgoing traffic but this is simple to configure. Then when i get home from travel I just plug it into my switch and it will automatically grab updates similar to how the UDM line of products would.

    This gateway is something i've been looking for. Now if i could only get a decently priced 2.5gbe switch to connect my PCs and NAS box together, I'd be jolly. PoE or not, doesn't matter as I have a PoE switch for those things that require it.

      ServeTheHome has tested a whole bunch of low-cost switches, many with 2.5GbE, so if you're not *totally* wedded to Unifi there are some decent options.

      My gen 1 USG and cloud key are now 7 years old and probably feeling their age. The power supply has died this week on the USG so I've replaced that with a cheap power supply and I've been eyeing a gen 2 cloud key plus so maybe a USG upgrade might be on the cards as well. I'm up for a layman's migration tutorial.

    Man, I can't help but think that there is just a gaping hole in the market for a 2.5 GbE lineup in between this UCG-Ultra and the Dream Machine Pro. Having a faster LAN than WAN is really common and useful, especially for home and small business users with a NAS.
    There has got to be something in the middle between $120 plastic gigabit box and $380 active-cooling rack-mount 10 Gb metal monstrosity with integrated hard drive slot.
    Why should I need a damn rack in order to get a router that doesn't gimp my WiFi 6 & 7 APs made by the SAME COMPANY in terms of uplink?

      They are missing a gateway in their line up IMO. We've got the UXG-Pro and the UXG Lite. Both are good for multi site business that want to run off a single external controller. They could do a 4 port 2.5Gb gateway and call it the UXG and that would fill that segment nicely.

  • @iankester-haney3315
    @iankester-haney3315 2 місяці тому

    I don't understand why they keep going backwards in functionality. My USG has 2 WAN and 2 LAN ports. The UXG seems to only have 1 of each and is more expensive. All of the new switches are still Gbe and apart from the ultra lube keep reducing PoE power budget with each new generation.
    You'd think they could improve the existing models as they go rather than launching new lines that clutter up the overall lineup given they rarely discontinue the previous lines.

    Great update, thanks. Some logic as to why they have a 2.5GB internet port with 1 GB user ports. It could have more to do with removing bottlenecks to provide concurrent bandwidth, not just port-specific. If I have two users wanting to pull data at a max rate that is a 2gb max impact on the gateway port.

With that amount of money to have a decent "small business setup" you can setup a larger business setup with another product line from another company.

    The gateway ultra is definitely the best for a home network. I've got a 1gbit connection and have been using a Dream Router for a few years and found it completely disappointing, but also could not justify the cost of a Dream Machine Pro.
    Now reliably getting 900mbit across my whole network, even over WiFi with the U6+ and a 160mhz channel.
    Even without IDS/IPS, the Dream Router can even struggle to hit 500mbit. If you've got a PPPoE connection from your ISP you'll be lucky to get 300mbit....
